Author's Note:
Here it is, the final gym battle of Hoenn and boy do I have a lot in store for this one. If you remember back to the final gym in Johto, Ash was faced with just one member of Claire's elite four challenge team (who he didn't even need to beat) so here... well, you'll see. I really wanted to showcase his growth through Hoenn. Emphasised by the closing scene. In case it wasn't obvious, I'm increasing the progression of his team with each region as he gets more experience, he can better help his team train & grow. It's also how Sawyer, a studious person, was able to grow his own team so quickly through this arc. Keeping him at least on level with Ash's Hoenn squad. Speaking of Sawyer, he won't have a massive role here but him seeing Ash's last gym battle might pay off when the league rolls around, we'll just need to wait and see. I've also tried to pay homage to the original battle here, how? You'll see. I also want to make one thing clear, mega evolution is not an auto win button. Yes, it boosts Pokémon beyond their normal limits, but experience and strategy can still out do the transformation. It's like an athlete who builds up their arm muscles for months and months... they aren't winning any marathon despite being undeniably strong and fit. You might be thinking that I uploaded a day early and to that I say, I'm sure many of you have heard the news from the anime and the next series. I just want to say I'm a little shocked, I never expected them to make this move but I'll be keeping an open mind as we experience this strange new world. I won't let this critique my current plans for this series, but I am also open to what's in store and how I could implement it. This is why I uploaded a day earlier. I'll see you next time on a particular holiday for the final chapter of the year. Don't forget to vote in the poll and with that, let's begin
Chapter Seventy-Nine: Ash verses Juan: Prudence
Ash smiled as he finished clipping the last ball onto his belt. His chosen team of six Pokémon each well rested and ready for the gym battle. Looking outside of the window of his room, he smiled over the sunny city of Sootopolis. A pair of hands slipped around his body as a weight pressed against his back.
"You ready?" He heard his girlfriend's voice whisper in his ear. Her lips nibbling on it as her head rested on his shoulder.
"Of course." He turned to wrap his arms around her waist. Holding her close, he pecked her lips a couple times. "What about you?"
"What'cha mean?" she asked.
"Yesterday wasn't easy and I know what you said then... but-" He paused. "It's settled in a-and I don't want you to have let it hit and suffer in silence."
"I'm fine," she replied, pushing herself up to peck his lips. "Well, I'm not. But it's like I said yesterday, I know I'm not strong enough and it's what I need to work on. So, I will be and today is about you making it to the Hoenn league. So, focus on that because I'd feel horrible if you ended up losing today just because you're concerned about me."
"If you're sure," he replied, leaning his forehead against her's. Lightly hitting the tips of their noses together.
"I'm sure." She smiled softly. "And if you do win... well I might just have a special celebration planned."
"And what might that be?" he asked with a slight giddy chuckle in his voice. A smirk twitching the corner of his lips.
"That." She pecked his lips to amplify her pause. Pulling back, she had a matching smirk. "Would be telling."
Serena interlocked their hands and pulled him along. Meeting their friends at the front of the centre, they set off down to the dock. He couldn't help but gawk at the sight of an old-styled boat waiting on one of the docks. A well-dressed man stood on the wooden pier, and they approached.
"Master Ash, I presume." He nodded to the man's question. "Very good. My name is Sebastian, and I'm the personal assistant to the gym leader. He's asked me to escort you and your friends to the Sootopolis gym, which can only be reached through the water."
"Thank you, sir," he replied.
Climbing on board, they sat under a blue canopy which provided cover from the morning sun. Stood at the back of the boat, the butler proceeded to set up the engine. Setting off through the crystal-clear water, small chatter mumbled across the group, but Ash kept mostly to himself. Running strategies through his head. Upon reaching the small patch of land in the middle of the city's water section which houses the gym, he found Sawyer already stood with the same man who judged the previous day's showcase theme-round. With his lips stretched out into a wide smile, he walked over with his friends following behind.
"Ah, my challenger." Juan greeted, turning face them before he could make any sort of greeting himself. "I hope your prepared for today's battle."
"Got all six Pokémon ready and rested." He gestured down to his belt where the devices rested. His electric type letting out a cheer for emphasis from his shoulder. After the months of his absence, it felt good having him back, if only for today's battle. "How did you know-"
"That it was you who arrived?" he asked. "Simple, Sebastian is very reliable. Had there been a delay in your transport over then he would've alerted me prior, and this is exactly when you was due to arrive. Speaking off, he shall be our judge for today's battle, but we can handle formalities inside."
"Sounds good to me." He nodded.
"Very good." He gestured over to the door where Sebastian already held it open. His eyes seemed to quickly scan over the rest of his group. "You was one of the performers from yesterday, correct?"
"Erm, yes sir," Serena stuttered slightly.
"Apologises you didn't make it through to the free style round." He gave a small bow. "While your cake was delicious and performance excellent, we had a strict limit on number of performer's we could allow through. If not for that, you would've made it for certain."
"Oh, erm, thank you," she replied.
With a small nod, he started making his way into the building. Following shortly behind, he couldn't help but notice the marble structure which made up the artistic and historic design. If he didn't know any better, he'd say this place was more like a museum, not that it really mattered. He took in the sight of the large hallway as they walked down. A deep-sea blue colour helped contrast the cream-white of the material. Truly a beautiful combination.
"I must say, young Ash, I'm very interested to get this match underway." He turned to face the gym leader, quirking an eyebrow up. "It is a recent development but to see you've got both a performer and coordinator in your group, makes me wonder how their style has influenced your own."
"How did you know I was a coordinator?" May asked from behind.
"I must admit, I didn't." Juan turned to face her, pinching his lips together. "How many grand festivals have you competed in, madam?"
"I erm," she blushed slightly. "I only just earnt my fifth ribbon. So, the next one will be my first."
"Ah, I see. I tend to keep up-to-date with top coordinators, which is how I recognized Serena here." He gestured towards her. "But I look forward to see how far you make it. I've had students of my own in the contest circuit and seeing them succeed is the most rewarding part as their mentor."
"Sir," Serena spoke up, drawing his attention, "can I ask who you've trained?"
"My main student is a young man called Wallace." He noted. "I also spent a little time with his own niece, Lisia, but it was decided he'd be best to guide her."
Watching his girlfriend, he frowned. She might've put on a brave face but hearing her rivals name, especially now she won't have chance to face her in the master class. Biting down on his inner cheek, he swallowed and tried to think of something to change the topic. Luckily, a thought entered his head.
"So, Juan." He drew the gym leader's attention. "You said you was excited for the match?"
"Indeed." he turned to face him. "I'm aware this is far from your first league. I called an old friend, Claire of the Blackthorn gym, to see how she handled your eighth badge last time around. What she told me truly got my interest, so I've decided on something."
"Which is?" he asked.
"Just like herself, I'll pull in one of my elite four challenge team into the match. He'll be the final one you face," he explained, "except I'm taking it up a step. I am not satisfied for you to just put up a good fight. You've got an entire other region under your belt. You'll need to defeat everyone to earn my badge."
"Erm..." He uttered. "Against Claire I used a lot of my powerhouses. I didn't plan for a challenge like that and might need to switch some-"
"I'm not surprised you brought out these... powerhouses, as you put it when facing Claire," he replied, "but you might not need to worry about matching power because while that is Claire's speciality, it's not mine. I prefer to use my contest experience to overwhelm, rather than raw power."
"Right." He nodded, taking a deep breath. "Then... let's do this!"
"I'm pleased with your response," he replied, "it's important to be adaptable and go with whatever is thrown at you. Just like water itself."
The corridor came to an end, and they entered the main battle room. He instantly looked to the field. It was a mostly water field with grass lands around the edge, but the field seemed much larger than the typical battle, easily double the size if not triple the size. Two towers stood on either end which acted as the trainer boxes. Reaching his side, he climbed up to the top, taking a moment to notice his friends in the audience area. Rows of seats surrounded the arena.
Sebastian took up a spot near the middle edge of the field, stood behind the rails to the seating area. "This will be a six-on-six battle for a Sootopolis gym rain badge! Both sides shall use six Pokémon with only the challenger able to substitute Pokémon. We'll start in a double battle format but after two knock outs, we'll continue as one on one battles. During this format, the challenge may substitute but if they lose a Pokémon first, they'll be restricted to one. There won't be a time limit and our gym leader Juan shall reveal his Pokémon first."
"For any trainer consumed with the desire to enter the Hoenn league championship, they must first be able to prove their ability to adapt to constantly changing circumstances in the face of danger. Just like water." Juan produced two Ultra Balls, one in each hand. "Now to see the drive of your desire, Ash. Let's go Whiscash and Mantine!"
Holding them out, his two Pokémon materialised on the field. Both of which he recognized from previous parts of his adventure but neither species he was overly familiar with. Pulling out his Pokédex, he used it to scan:
Whiscash, The whiskers Pokémon. The final evolved form of Barboach. Strikes its caudal fin against the swamp bed to shake the ground and startle its prey. It will then swallow the fleeing prey whole. People mistook this behaviour as the cause of earthquakes
"Grovyle will be the best choice to handle a water ground type." He thought to himself, moving his dex to his other opponent:
Mantine, The kite Pokémon. The final evolved form of Mantyke. On sunny days, schools of Mantine can be seen elegantly leaping over the sea's waves. This Pokémon is not bothered by the Remoraid that hitches rides
"Tell me, Ash, what is going through your head right now?" Juan asked as he put the device away.
"Your starting with opposite typings of ground and flying to cover each other's weakness. While both are water type, they hand water's two biggest weaknesses when paired together," he explained, "Whiscash is immune to electricity and Mantine will prove difficult for grass types."
"Very good," He praised. "But if that's all you've got from your opponent, it's going to be a long road for you. So, who shall you use, I wonder?"
"For my own choices, I choose Grovyle and Swellow!" He hollered.
He held his own devices out. The two evolved Pokémon materialised on the field, with Grovyle closing his eyes, placing his twig into his mouth, and rolling his neck. While Swellow landed beside him, rolling her wings back, both crouched low into a similar stance, narrowing eyes towards their opponent.
"It seems you've gone the opposite approach." Juan mused. "Firstly, you've gone for a clear type advantage on one of my partners. Which is where I believe your first decision would've been made. Your next option, Swellow, seems in response to the first. A Pokémon who could best keep Mantine away from him, even if not opposite typings, it should make for a strong combination. And given each of their demeanours, I'm looking forward to what these two can pull off."
Instead of responding to the water type specialist, he narrowed his own eyes. Scanning over the field, he took a deep breath. Focusing on his two Pokémon, he closed his eyes and released his breath. These two have been with him since very early Hoenn. Even if not best friends, they have trained with each other and share a respect for the other's prowess. He couldn't think of a better pairing for starting off this match, regardless of what Juan analysed.
"Whiscash and Mantine verses Grovyle and Swellow!" Sebastian declared. "Let the battle begin!"
Juan verses Ash: Round one
He barely had time to registrar anything on the field as the ground started shaking violently. Crouching low to prevent himself falling over and using one of his arms to steady himself, he glanced across the four Pokémon. Both Swellow and Mantine had took off with Whiscash no-where to be seen.
Grovyle was on his back, having been thrown back from the earthquake. The water was choppy, being thrown onto the dry land.
Leaping out of the water, Whiscash flew through the air. A ball of ESP formed in front of his head as Grovyle sat back up.
Crashing into his back, the pure grass type went rolling over the field. While the water ground type splashed down into the water.
Mantine shot down, knocking Grovyle out into the water. Unprepared for the blow, he ended up treading water.
Swellow shot down behind, slicing her wing into the kite Pokémon's back. She cried out and took off as his flock leader skipped off the water.
Two yellow whiskers shot out of the water, each wrapping around his normal flying types wings. The tips tickled away under her wings. Thrashing around in the air, she let out pained cries mixed with laughter. Struggling, she couldn't put up much against the unusual tactic.
Diving back into the water. Juan's water flying type burst back out moments later under Grovyle as he tried to swim back to land.
Flying over the field with his second Pokémon also trapped, his mind began to race. Eyes widened as an idea popped into his head.
"Pound to escape then leaf blade!" He shouted.
Whipping his head forward, the leaf on top flicked onto Mantine's back. Causing her to momentarily pause, he used the opened to climb up onto her back.
Leaping off his arm-leaves glew with energy. Taking a scythe shape, he spun through his fall. Smashing the leaf blade down into the water.
With her own assailant blown up by the force of Grovyle's attack. Swellow used the lax in the whiskers to break free. Snatching them up in her talons, she took off, dragging her opponent behind her. Leaving him wide open in the air, Grovyle formed an energy ball in his hands.
Pulling it over head to toss at their opponent, a beam of ice landed in front of him. The blast destroyed the projectile, knocking Grovyle back.
"Distract Mantine!" Ash hollered.
Letting go of her prey, Whiscash splashed back down into the water. Swellow took off and shot straight into the kite Pokémon's stomach.
Forcing her to cancel her ice beam, both flying types soared off in opposite directions. Cracks appeared in the ice and Whiscash came crashing through.
Grovyle rolled to the side and avoided the second zen headbutt. The whisker's Pokémon sailed right past, splashing back under water.
"If we can take one out then it'll be much easier to handle," he muttered to himself, "and Whiscash is the easiest one to do that with."
His eyes shot up and he noticed Swellow keeping ahead of her opponent. She might not match weight or bulk, but she's got speed and flexibility.
"Wing attack straight onto the water's surface Swellow!" He shouted.
Soaring over her opponent, Mantine had to take the long way to follow suit. Her wings glew white and she drove straight down.
Two whiskers shot out, straight towards her wings. Slamming her wings together to bring the tips together, she lifted and sent a shockwave through them. An aftershock forced the water ground type out of the water as she lost all momentum.
Mantine dived down on top of Swellow. Both duel flying types splashed under water as Grovyle charged forward. A series of bullet seeds shot out.
Hitting Whiscash head on, he couldn't even focus to launch a counter. Using the opening, Grovyle charged at him and sliced a leaf blade over his stomach.
Juan's first Pokémon splash down as Grovyle landed on one knee. A red light quickly engulfed the whisker's Pokémon from the pool.
"Whiscash is unable to battle." Sebastian declared. "The battle shall continue."
No rest could be taken as Mantine shot back out of the water. Swellow still wrapped up in the back fin-tail. Flicking it down with force, she crashed onto the earth. Completely soaked and coughing, she was trying to regain her breath, unable to assist in taking down the water flying type.
"Get moving Grovyle!" He hollered.
His wood gecko Pokémon already running off with great speed. While not quite quick enough to run on water, he had the speed to bounce.
Leaping over the field, he kept slightly ahead of Juan's kite Pokémon. Jumping from one side to the other, as if daring them to move in.
An outline of light-blue flying energy surrounded their opponent. Who performed a loop in the air, diving down onto his grass type.
Getting caught on her wing, they took off higher off the ground. Grunting from the pain, the twig in his mouth fell down onto the field below.
"Loosen her concentration!" Ash shouted.
With a pained expression, his wood gecko Pokémon dug deep. Opening his mouth, he shot out a burst of bullet seeds straight into Mantine's face.
Wobbling and squeezing her own eyes shut. The glow of energy around Mantine faded and she seemed to almost stop mid-air.
Using the opening, Grovyle climbed up onto her back. Bringing both feet up, he lept off her back, sending himself flying over the field as Mantine went towards the wall. Spinning in his stride, he formed a dark green energy ball into his hands. Throwing it forward, the force also pushed him down towards the ground.
He crashed down onto the pool with a heavy splash. Swimming back to sure, he crawled up panting heavily and soaking wet.
Looking back to the remaining opponent, he noticed a cloud of smoke covering the water flying type. A blur of Swellow brought a smile to his face.
She seemed back and ready for a second round. Heading off towards the far side of the field, she picked up speed with a power barrier forming around.
The smoke cleared first, however, revealing their opponent. Mantine shot down, with heavy force. The same energy surrounding her body.
Crashing down onto Grovyle, she bounced back up. Hitting Swellow from underneath, both duel flying types ended up turning and gliding away from the clash.
"Grovyle is unable to battle." Sebastian declared. "The battle shall continue as a one-on-one."
Clenching his fist, he held his device out and recalled his fallen grass type. Swellow came down and landed beside him, dropping Grovyle's twig onto the floor in front of him. Turning back around, she hopped back onto the field with a narrowed gaze towards their opponents.
Juan stood with a hard-stoic expression, with his Mantine floating down in front of him. Gone the care-free expression from before.
"In case it wasn't obvious, the point of this unique round is to allow me to truly get a feel for how your team works together," he explained, folding his arm. "I must say, I'm not too impressed considering the experience you've brought with you. While not actively sabotaging their partner, both your Swellow and Grovyle lacked proper teamwork. Taking Mantine on one-on-one, was never going to work. I hope your able to turn it around from the rest of this match."
"We're just getting started!" Ash threw his fist into the air. "Right Swellow?!"
Letting out a squawked to answer, she flapped her wings. Hopping off the ground, she shot forward with incredible speed. Piercing the point where Mantine's wing-fins began from her body with her beak. She knocked the water flying type back and took off into the upper half of the field.
Shaking off the make-shift sucker punch, Mantine flapped her own wings. Taking off into the sky, she was clearly lagging behind his own flying type.
With a loud echoey cry, she shot out a barrage of bubble-beams from her mouth. With open wings, Swellow soared over head, keeping ahead of the attack.
The bubbles shot the ceiling as Mantine flipped backwards. Trying to lock on her attack with Swellow who dived behind her.
Spinning on the spot, she clutched her talons onto Mantine's antenna. With a pained cry, she disappeared behind the water flying type.
Juan's kite Pokémon ended up doing a complete loop as her bubble-beam stopped. Crashing down onto the ground, Swellow ended up on top of her.
With a smirk spread across her beak, she kicked off and took off back into the sky. The two-antenna twitched. A multicoloured beam shot out from between them. It struck Swellow in the back and she cried out but turned upwards. Shooting off faster into the sky, with the psybeam ending.
"I believe it's time for the end of the beginning, Mantine," Juan instructed, "if you'd be so kind."
Flapping her wings to get back into the air, she took off. Performing a loop, he noticed her making a dive for the water.
"Aerial ace!" He shouted. "If she gets under the water then were in trouble!"
The water flying type hit the water and two massive waves splashed out either side. A loud thud echoed off the large empty room they were currently in.
Swellow shot down with closed wings, diving under the water. Moments later and Mantine is flying back up. Water dripping off her body with Swellow under.
Spinning in her body-pierce move, they crashed into the ceiling. Breaking off from her assault, she swooped down, landing on Ash's shoulder.
Mantine fell back after her, splashing softer onto the water's surface. Swirls replaced her eyes as a red light engulfed her body.
"Mantine is unable to battle." Sebastian declared. "Making the winners of the double battle first round Ash and Swellow."
Feeling a smile break out over his face, he took a deep breath. Swellow flew back and perched herself on his shoulder. She looked ruffed up with feathers out of place but a massive smirk and glint in her eye showed pride at being the one to come out on top of all four Pokémon. While he would've liked to have Grovyle for future opponents due to his typing, he couldn't deny Swellow had far more resilience in her capability.
"I'm guessing you don't want a rest?" he asked.
"I can rest once he's got someone to take me out!" She declared. "If he can even pull that off."
"Don't get to confident now," he replied, as a flash appeared over the field.
Turning back towards the field, he took in the sight of a familiar species in the water, and he felt a pit in his stomach. He reconsigned the opponent as a member of Serena's team but since it's been a while since seeing her's and even longer since battling one himself, he used his Pokédex:
Kingdra, The Dragon Pokémon. The final evolved form of Horsea. Kingdra sleeps on the seafloor where it is otherwise devoid of life. When a storm arrives, the Pokémon is said to awaken and wander about in search of prey. With pinpoint accuracy they're known as snipers of the sea
"Kingdra's gonna be no joke, Swellow, you sure about this?" he asked.
"I'm insulted you need to ask." She turned and soared back over the field. Landing on the land, she locked eyes with her opponent.
"I must say Ash, your Swellow is quite the representative of her species." Juan praised. "Am I right in presuming she was once a flock leader?"
"Yeah," he replied, with a smile. "But how did you know?"
"I pride myself on spotting the small details, her resilience and independence during most of the double battle was my first clue. You spent far more time supporting Grovyle and left her to her own devices. Shows you had more faith in her from the start. It's also why I deliberately target Grovyle first, keeping your mind focused and running by attacking the groups weakest point. And that assessment is exactly why I've brought out Kingdra so early."
"What'cha mean?" he asked.
"Just like your Swellow, Kingdra here was once the head of his own flock... or well aquatic Pokémon tend to refer to them as schools," he replied, "so I'm interested in seeing which of our two alpha's as it were would come out on top. Kingdra here has been looking forward to the match up for a long time."
"How ?" He blurted out.
"This is the same Pokémon, who as an unevolved Taillow took Ms Roxanne's Armaldo correct?" he asked to which he nodded. "You see, gym leaders in any given region speak. We're friends as well as colleagues and when we get challengers who intrigue and or impress us... well, we tell each other. Hearing about your feats such as that match or your test for mega evolution given by Steven himself has made me glad you came to Sootopolis last. This means I get to go full out without holding myself or my Pokémon back! It's very rare I get a challenger such as yourself to allow this."
"Well enjoy it while it lasts because we're gonna win this!" He declared, tightening his own fist. Swellow let out a cry of her own to emphasis his point.
"Kingdra verses Swellow!" Sebastian declared. "Let the battle begin!"
Juan verses Ash: Round two
Kicking off the ground, she shot forward with tremendous speed. A powerful jet of water shot out across the water. Circling around the hydro pump, her wing tip dipped into the pool. Spraying some water out to the side as her wings glew bright white.
Moments from impact, the dragon Pokémon dived back under. Swellow sailed over head, heading towards the stand Juan stood on.
Bursting back out, a quick ice beam shot out towards her. Turning up she rocketed high up over the field, barely dodging herself.
Kingdra redirected his own aim and fired a second ice beam. Her wings shimmered in metal and crossed in front of her body. Taking the blow head on, she was knocked a little higher into the air before breaking them open, dispersing the entire beam, leaving little more than sparkles sprinkling down.
Taking off through the sky, a series of quick bursts of different elements shot into the air. She skilfully avoided each, unable to get close for her own attacks.
Ash clenched his fist as he watched the display. Both Pokémon have completely opposite styles but right now Kingdra could just wait for Swellow to tire.
"Quick attack into a dive!" He hollered.
Diving straight down, it seemed like an ice beam skimmed her back. Disappearing in the blink of an eye, a splash showed her entering the water.
Kingdra wasted no time in following her under. Seconds later both Pokémon burst back out with Swellow pushing Kingdra up.
His eyes widened seeing the power build up the water dragon's snout. "Quick! Send him flying Swellow!"
Stopping mid-air, she smashed one wing into the side. Using the built-up momentum, she knocked her opponent flying over the field.
Spinning through the air, a ball of water shot out into the air. It exploded into a black cloud over the field and water started raining down over the field, hitting both Pokémon. Skidding across the land, Kingdra flopped around and splashed back into the pool. Instantly a bigger jet of water shot out.
Swellow spread her wings and dived down, using gravity to help avoid the hydro pump. Wings spread as she charged in headfirst towards their opponent.
A swift ice beam followed up and struck her head on. Diving under the water, Kingdra dodged the ice ball with sailed overhead.
Crashing into the floor behind him, Kingdra popped back out to face his opponent. As the dust settled however, Swellow was revealed with swirls for eyes.
"Swellow is unable to battle." Sebastian declared. "Making the winners of this round Juan and Kingdra!"
Holding his device out, he recalled the normal flying type. Clutching the device hand, he looked down as rain dripped of the tip of his hat. With a deep breath, he was already thinking of what could've happened if he didn't allow her competitiveness to get in the way. He whispered a word of thanks and shrunk the ball.
"She put up a good fight and took on three of my team consecutively. It's a feet rarely seen in my gym, and you should be proud." Juan praised. "Of course, if we hadn't got the rain set up, things might've ended differently. The wet feathers helped slow her down slightly and with Kingdra's swift swim it was only a matter of time. So, the question now is, who will you get to handle Kingdra in his element?"
Biting down on his inner cheek, he ran through the last four members of his team. His eye glanced down to Pikachu and while he could handle the dragon, he didn't want to reveal his most experienced partner yet. Obviously Gardevoir could as well but bringing out mega evolution this early? He hated to say it but he truly doubted Seviper could go one-on-one with this opponent despite her ability to swim which left-
"I choose you, Metang!" He tossed the ball of his belt. In a flash of light, the metal titan materialised with rain hitting his body.
"Ah, the famed pseudo of immense power." Juan smiled. "Now we're getting interesting."
"You know about Metang as well?" he asked.
"Of course," he replied, "Winona mentioned the special requirements given by Steven. There's not to many people who gain his interest."
"I've got his interest?" he asked.
"He wouldn't have let you keep Metang if he didn't fully believe you could handle them," he explained, "he takes caution to a whole different level. Along with the fact that he trusted you with a key stone... there's even some gym leader's he doesn't trust with it."
"Really?" he asked.
"The league board told him to hand out five key stones to make the conference more interesting," Juan explained, "after Gold's Tyranitar made headlines back in the siege of Goldenrod. Revealing mega evolution to the world. At first he gave two out to gym leaders, one being Winona."
"He said he had to give three out," Ash uttered.
"Well, the board only found out his loophole after giving me one as well," he replied, "they couldn't find replacements quick enough but made it clear the others were intended for trainers. Of course, they realised they should've specified the league to him after giving one to Serena here."
"Kingdra verses Metang!" Sebastian declared. "Let the battle begin!"
Juan verses Ash: Round three
He watched as a powerful get out water shot across the field. The hydro pump seemed larger compared to the one used against Swellow. A shield of ESP formed around the steel psychic type. Knocking him back slightly, the water disperses and Metang shook himself from the minimised blow.
Locking his iron arms close to his body, the unevolved pseudo took off over the field. A series of long ranged moves shot up after him.
Just like previously, while he was able to avoid the moves. He couldn't find an opening, especially with Kingdra swiftly changing his position.
Glancing up to the clouds filling the ceiling of the field. He held his hand out to feel the rain. A smirk formed on his face as an idea popped into his head.
"Magnet rise on the clouds!" He shouted.
A ball of electricity surrounded his iron arm Pokémon. Shooting up into the clouds, static electricity jumped across the clouds.
"Interesting Ash... the lightening built up in the clouds will only prolong the rain," Juan uttered, "what're you planning Ash?"
As if to answer his question, a massive bolt of lightning shot down. Metang led the charge and struck his electrified fist into the pool.
Waves of electricity travelled out, engulfing the entire field. Kingdra came to a stop and grunted in pain. Eyes squeezed shut as the static engulfed his entire body. A smirk flicked up on Ash's lips, not only should this finish off this opponent but help with whoever Juan decides to go with next.
"Now Kingdra, its time we start up the second act," Juan instructed.
Shaking his body, the hardened eyes of Kingdra stared straight back to him. Diving back into the electrified pool, a couple seconds past before he lept up.
Spinning in the air, a massive pulse of dragon type energy shot out of his snout. Blasting into the top of his pseudo, Metang was knocked under water.
"What?!" He gasped. "How did Kingdra-"
"Surely you didn't think that an electric shock would win you the battle when Kingdra is part dragon type," Juan replied, as his dragon splashed back into the pool. "I'm almost disappointed. You could certainly use some more prudence if you wish to take victory during the Hoenn league."
The current of the pool began shaking around. Soon a spiral formed the field had been turned into a raging whirlpool. Neither Pokémon could be seen.
"Metang!" He cried out.
Shimmers of silver sparkled as he saw his steel psychic type struggle against the waves. Roars of thunder echoed from the clouds above.
"Use Metal claw and stick out your arm!" He hollered.
A bright silver colour sparkled as the rain hardened over the field. Narrowing his gave, he watched the extended claws attempt to break the surface.
Bolts of lightning struck down from the cloud. Hitting the surface above his pseudo, an explosion consumed the field. Water spewed everywhere as Metang was tossed out of the current, into a nearby wall. Kingdra resurfaced, fighting the blast as he was thrown in the opposite direction across the water.
Looking over to his partner, he noticed the eyes turning the same dark red colour. Water dripped down as sparks jumped off his entire body.
Swallowing hard, he realised the combined stress of two electrical blasts and the whirlpool... he might have more resilience thanks to Pikachu but-
The steel psychic type charged forward in the blink of an eyes. Fists shimmered a silver colour, punching into the dragon opponent with speed.
Kingdra took the first few bullet punches but quickly caught up to his rhythm. Swift swim helped him keep up and eventually surpass the rampaging Pokémon.
Diving under the water, Metang continued to punch the surface. Spinning around, he seemed in a frenzy to relocate his opponent.
"If your Pokémon is unable to concentrate, they'll never win even if by all means they should," Juan warned, "now Kingdra, let's finish this."
Popping up a good few feet away in the pool. The water dragon's snout seemed ready to pop. His pseudo wasted no time in charging towards him.
A black gooey ball shot out and exploded over Metang's face. It hardly seemed to hurt him, but the ink substance did cover his eyes which squeezed shut.
Diving back down, Metang sailed clear over where his target once was. Letting out a primal roar, his entire body shimmered with steel type energy. Spinning around, his arms stretched out and a silver ball formed between them. Another roar from the clouds warned Ash but it was too late.
"Now!" Juan commanded.
Kingdra burst back up out of the pool and fired a dragon pulse. Striking the forming flash canon, it exploded along with a lightning bolt from above.
The explosion sent Metang fly over the field, crashing through the water, he skipped onto the land. Skidding to a halt with a creator of dirt cushioning him.
"Metang is unable to battle!" Sebastian declared. "Making the winners of this round Juan and Kingdra!"
He felt his jaw drop at the sight of his steel psychic type. A pool of dread formed in the pit of his stomach. He knew it was a risk charging him up to the rampage levels but his training with Pikachu should've helped. Granted it took a much bigger charge to set him off, but he didn't have more control.
His eyes drifted over to the other side of the field; a red light hit Kingdra. Recalling him into his device. "I'm afraid Kingdra wouldn't do much good following the previous clash. So, we'll be calling it there."
"Kingdra has been deemed unable to battle by the gym leader." Sebastian declared. "As per the result of the last round, the challenge shall reveal first."
Pinching his lips together, he ran his hand over his three remaining Pokéballs. It didn't take him long to make his decision, mainly down to the level of experience. He'd be best keeping Pikachu until last and with Gardevoir having mega evolution, she's best kept fresh too. Pulling off his remaining Pokéball, he held it out and tossed it into the air. On the grassy land his pure poison type materialised. Cranking her neck to the side, she hissed threateningly.
"A Seviper?" Juan blinked, revealing his own Pokéball. "Your just full of surprises. If asked beforehand who you'd bring today, I wouldn't have guessed her."
"How come?" he asked.
"All your options so far have made some sort of sense. Typing with Grovyle and with the Pikachu by your side, who I assume will be used later," he explained, gesturing down to his starter. "Swellow and Metang both have mobility to make the most of the field. Neither seem to work with this Pokémon."
He couldn't help but inwardly smirk at the explanation of the gym leader. Seeing the red-light flash out, a lilypad appeared on the surface of the water. A little confused by the option, he pulled out his Pokédex and scanned the lilypad:
Ludicolo, The carefree Pokémon. The final evolved form of Lotad. Upon hearing an upbeat and cheerful rhythm, the cells in Ludicolo's body become very energetic and active. Even in battle, this Pokémon will exhibit an amazing amount of power
Smiling as he put the device away, his assumption was proven correct. Part of him wondered why he'd deliberately put himself at a type disadvantage and came up with two possible reasons. Just like himself, he could be saving experience for later in the battle or he might be taking a risk due to his own surprise at Seviper's inclusion. Not that it really matters the reason now. As long as they keep Seviper's special skill secret, they can win this.
"Ludicolo verses Seviper!" Sebastian declared. "Let the battle begin!"
Juan verses Ash: Round four
He took a deep breath as he noticed Seviper prepare to pounce. "Stay put and watch! We need to get a feel for their movements!"
Crouching low, he saw the corner of her eye glance in his direction. Giving a small nod, she refocused on the lilypad floating in the pool.
Leaping up out of the pool, the water grass type had a sphere of water between his hands. With a thrust forward, it went flying across the field.
She didn't even flinch, swinging her tail around. The jagger tip glew bright purple. Slicing through the water, it imploded and sprinkled water over her.
Splashing back in the water, Ludicolo started spinning around. A series of razor-sharp leaves shot out. She continued her poison tail to whack several away, but the onslaught would tire her out sooner rather than later. She also wasn't hitting all of them just to the sheer numbers sent towards her.
"Haze over the land!" He called out. "Force him out of the water if he wants to fight!"
Opening her mouth, she let out a thick black smoke. Moving in sync with poison tail deflection, soon the cloud covered the entire field.
"Ah, a huntress. Very interesting but this is hardly her ideal environment." Juan mused. "Blizzard to blow that smoke away. There's no hiding for her here."
A small smirk crept onto his lips, making him thankful the haze blocked the view between the two trainers. Ludicolo appeared over the top of the cloud and blew a massive icy wind down onto the field. Within seconds the black smoke was replaced with frost covered grass... and Seviper no-where to be seen.
Landing on the edge of the land, Ludicolo walked further on. Taking in his first proper appearance, he noticed how much bigger he was than Brock's.
Cracks formed on the frosted grass. Seviper lept out behind the carefree Pokémon and wrapped her body around his in a constricting manner.
Her poison-filled fangs sunk down on the side of his neck, leaving a purple mark over his bill. While the jagger-tail stabbed into his stomach. Settling the grass water type down into an almost docile state. She brought her tail down to slash across his stump-like legs.
"You might think you've lead us into a trap, but the truth is... we knew she'd only reveal herself once Ludicolo was vulnerable," Juan replied.
A ball of blue ESP formed in front of his head and his serpent flinched. Running across the field, he grabbed onto Seviper as her grip loosened.
The two of them lept of the land and dived under the water. His eyes locked forward to the gym leader who just stared back.
"We'll set a thirty second timer for Seviper to surface!" Sebastian declared.
His eyes locked onto the smug looking gym leader. Tightening his fist, he felt the numbing tingle spread through it. Holding his breath, he noticed bubbles surface where both opponents disappeared. Closing his eyes for a moment, he swallowed hard, hoping his huntress could pull of the prepared strategy.
A splashing sound drew his attention, and he opened his eyes. Ludicolo had surfaced on his stomach, floating motionlessly in the pool.
Seviper lept out behind him and landed on the side. Shaking her body, water sprinkled everywhere. She slivered back to her original starting position.
"Ludicolo is unable to battle." Sebastian declared. "Making the winners of this round Ash and Seviper!"
Ash smiled and called out some praise to his pure poison type as Juan recalled his carefree Pokémon. She certainly seemed pleased with herself but a clap from the gym leader drew both of their attention. He seemed to have a bemused expression on his face with a slight chuckle escaping.
"I must ask how Seviper gained the edge in that clash?" Juan asked, seeming slightly shaken. "In the water she should've been a sitting psyduck."
"You don't need to be a water type to know how to swim." Ash answered. "But since you made that assumption, we just let you go with it. Her toxins and strikes would've worn him down sooner or later. I guess Ludicolo let his guard down once in his element and she took the opportunity to strike."
"It seems I underestimated both you and your Pokémon." Juan produced his next Pokéball. "But that won't happen again. Go Milotic!"
In a flash of light, the cream-coloured sea serpent materialised in the pool. Standing tall as she easily over towered her own trainer on the stand. It was difficult to make out since half her body was submerged in water, but she certainly seemed bigger than Serena's. He pulled out the dex for a quick refresher:
Milotic, The tender Pokémon. The final evolved form of Feebas. Milotic live at the bottom of large lakes. When this Pokémon's body glows a vivid pink, it releases a pulsing wave of energy that brings soothing calm to troubled hearts. Often being the voice to calm raging Gyarados in the same lakes
Putting the device away, his eyes travelled over to his own serpent. "Hey Seviper. We won't have the same element of surprise. But we've got the numbers and could really use this as a chance to test out Milotic. What'cha say, wanna stick in or not?"
She hissed her reply and crouched low back into the same starting position. She might not be the same battle nut that Swellow is but she's just as stubborn, unwilling to back down from an opponent. Smiling, he narrowed his own gaze. Glancing to the side, he briefly tried to remember how Serena's fought but she never was a big battler. He also noticed Sawyer with his head down, fiercely scribbling things down into his notebook.
Shaking his head, he refocused on the impeding battle. Seeing the trainer and Pokémon combination, he couldn't help but feel like this would normally be the last member for his regular eight badge team. Something about her presence just seemed to scream final boss but it didn't really matter right now.
"Milotic verses Seviper!" Sebastian declared. "Let the battle begin!"
Juan verses Ash: Round five
He watched carefully as the larger serpent swung her head around. A powerful jet of water shot out of her mouth. Blasting across the field, his pure poison type rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding the hydro pump. The attack dug a decent sized trench where his Pokémon once stood.
Slivering forward, Seviper wasted no time in diving into the water. Swimming forward, she closed in with the pure water type.
Her head shimmered with a silver coating, diving down onto his snake. Both serpents went down under the water and out of sight.
Covering his face from the splash, he watched the field settle without and sight of either Pokémon. A purple liquid coloured the centre of the pool.
Milotic erupted up out with a loud cry. His own partner was wrapped around her body, poison-filled fangs sinking into her neck. A purple mark formed over her face, and she seemed to get a sort of dazed expression with half closed eyes. Raising her jagged tail, she stabbed it into the cream-body opponent.
"Use Aqua ring and recover." Juan instructed.
Letting out a loud echoey cry, a veil of water swirled all around her body. A mystic glow engulfed her body as she seemed to return to the original state.
Forced to let go due to the need to breath, Seviper dived back into the pool, swimming to the land. The purple water not effecting her in the slightest.
"Look out!" He hollered.
Milotic's tail swung down and crash in the land the land. Covered by water, the splash washed over his serpent, preventing her climbing back onto the surface.
With a swing of her head, she shot out a thin beam of ice. It hit the water between Seviper & the land, leaving a chunk of ice between the two.
"She's not gonna let you get to land so let's make it a little more difficult for her!" He shouted. "Haze!"
Seviper let out a thick black smoke and covered the entire field. She blended in perfectly with the cloud and most of the field disappeared from sight.
Letting out a loud cry, Milotic blew a pink-tinted fairy wind. It blew the haze away from the water, but his serpent had already disappeared from sight.
Juan's pure water type cried out in pain and her tail flung up. Sending Seviper flying out of the water, she spun overhead, shooting down a thick purple liquid over her entire body. Their opponent cried out in pain as his own Pokémon fell back down, wrapping her body around Milotic's neck.
Her dagger tail glew a toxic purple colour. Raising it up, she whacked it away at the head of her prey.
"Your Seviper is tough but I'm afraid this battle is already decided." Juan declared. "You know what to do Milotic!"
Letting out another loud cry, the same mystic glow covered her body. The veil of water started to grow up and cover her body.
Knowing from previous experience, Seviper attempted to leap off before the aqua ring fully formed. Making a dive down towards the water.
"Twister." Juan flicked his hand to the side.
A tornado of wind and water with dark blue dragon type energy erupted out from the pool. It struck his pure poison type mid-air and shot straight up to the ceiling. He gasped at the hard thud of the attack hitting the metal. His fang snake Pokémon fell back down onto the land, swirls replacing her eyes.
"Seviper is unable to battle!" Sebastian declared. "Making the winners of this round Juan and Milotic!"
Pulling out his device, he quickly recalled his partner and tightly gripped the ball. Closing his eyes, he whispered a word of thanks before shrinking it back down to clip onto his belt. With a deep breath he refocused on the large sea-serpent who just finished healing from her combination. Looking nearly knew if not for the purple mark over her nose. Swallowing hard, he realised they were back down to an even footing with two Pokémon each.
"You see Ash, my Milotic here has a rather unique ability called marvel scale," Juan explained, "it means that when inflicted with a status condition, such as poison, her defensive capabilities are doubled. I believe your Swellow shares a similar ability but increasing offensive power."
"Guts..." He uttered.
"Which is exactly why we prevented ourselves from inflicting such conditions despite both Mantine and Whiscash having the capability," he replied, "and with her self-healing techniques we're able to keep on top of the downfalls. You've just made this whole battle that much harder for yourself I'm afraid."
"The tougher the opponent then the tougher we fight!" Ash declared.
"Hehe." He chuckled slightly with a small smirk. "I like your determination so let's see if it's enough to get you any further towards the Hoenn league!"
"Alright, let's do this!" Pikachu declared, sparking his cheeks as he dropped onto all fours, ready to pounce.
"You wanna go next?" he asked.
"Nothing against Gardie but I think I can do this quicker than she can. Just a combo of typing, experience, and my general awesomeness," he replied, "sooner we get down to his last mon, I can either take that one down and we win by default or get you enough insight for her to finish it."
"I can't argue with that!" he smiled. "Pikachu, I choose you!"
With a cry of his own, he lept down onto the land. Digging his tail down into the dirt, he sparked his cheeks in an aggressive manner.
"Interesting... I've heard you had your Pikachu from several of my fellow gym leaders in Hoenn, but none mentioned you using him," Juan explained.
"That's because he's my starter," Ash replied, "he's mostly been helping get the new guys up to the same level, but we didn't see much point in letting him compete in battles meant to test him when he's already passed similar for other leagues."
"So, what changed this time?" he asked.
"Well, he's been busy since his partner laid some eggs, so this was really the last chance we'd have to truly get a tough battle to get back in sync," he explained, "not to mention you promised a tougher match so-"
"Big talk, I scencerily hope you both can live up to the promise." Juan smiled.
Milotic let out a loud cry and narrowed her eyes, if not for the purple mark over her face, you'd never guess she was inflicted with poison. His own starter stood up, rubbing his cheeks, sparks flickered. Pulling paws away, small electric whips followed which he cracked down onto the ground.
"Milotic verses Pikachu!" Sebastian declared. "Let the battle begin!"
Juan verses Ash: Round six
He smiled as his starter engulfed his body with electricity. A powerful bolt shot out and struck their opponent head on. The corners of his lips dropped slightly as he noticed Milotic take the blow. She didn't try to dodge or deflect in anyway. It's as if she wanted to take the attack head on.
Her face scrunched up as the surrounding water bubbled. Waves of electricity covered her outer body as she trembled back and from the blow.
As he brought his thunder to an end, she was left slightly hunched over. Panting heavily with marks covering her body.
"Now Milotic, use recover," Juan instructed.
Extending her body upwards, she let out an echoey cry. A mystic light engulfed her body, washing away the effects of thunder. She stood tall as it ended.
"One thing we've learnt from our years in Pokémon contests is that one's appearance should be pristine and injury free," Juan explained, "needless to say that teaching Milotic recover was of the most importance. So, what do you say, Ash, do you wish to continue this battle?"
"Let's go with quick attack into iron tail!" He shouted.
Giving a nod, he starter took off with blinding speed. Skimming the surface of the water, a trail sprayed up behind him. Jumping his tail shimmered silver.
Milotic brought her own tail out of the water with a dark blue flame of dragon type energy. The two attacks collided but Pikachu's seemed to be inching closer thanks to his built-up momentum. The sea serpent gritted her teeth as her eyes squeezed shut.
"Follow with twister!" Juan shouted.
The fins on her tail began rotating like the blades seen on helicopters. A swirling vortex of wind shot out, blowing the dragon energy with it.
Blown into the ceiling by the flaming tornado, Pikachu cried out with bolts sparking to the side. Water spewed everywhere from the attack.
Juan's pure water type lowered the tail back into the water. The liquid brought into the vortex travelled up, consuming the flames as it reached Pikachu.
"I'm afraid that this round is now through," Juan shrugged, "the intense heat into cool water has crippled much larger opponents than your-"
"I don't think!" He cut the gym leader off. "Pikachu use thunder!"
A loud cry roared, and massive bolts struck out from the top of the tornado. Electricity shot down the vortex, striking Milotic head on. The twister exploded mid-air and a shimmering bullet shot down. Crashing into Milotic's chest, she was knocked back as Pikachu rebound, landing back on the ground.
"I had no idea your Pikachu had enough power to neutralise an attack like that one, Ash." Juan praised. "Milotic use hydro pump."
She let out another elegant cry and swung her head around. Firing out a massive jet of water from her mouth, it barrelled towards his pure electric type.
Smirking, he watched his starter take off around the edge of the field. Running at a decent pace, electricity surrounded his body. Balls formed on his tail which stuck up into the air. Using it like some sort of tennis racket, he sent the electro balls flying straight into the sea serpent, cancelling the blast of water.
"Milotic... she's your main contest partner, right?" Ash asked, as the onslaught continued.
"How could you know?" he asked.
"You're giving her far more commands," he replied, "not because she's less experienced but because the coordination is key in that style."
"Very good observations." He nodded. "But don't take that to mean she's any less powerful then your previous opponents. Now recover."
Pikachu lept with the electricity completely covering his body. Wild charge struck her centre chest, and she cried out in pain.
Pushing her body back, he went flying and landed back on all fours. Panting heavily, they could only watch as she recovered once more in seconds.
"I think it's time we wrapped this one up." Juan closed his eyes. "Dive into the water Milotic."
Ash tightened his fist as the sea-serpent dived underwater. She might not be recovering fully but their gonna need something big if they want to win this.
"Pikachu... I've got a plan," he explained, "let's get close with iron tail! Then it's time for a swim!"
Taking off to the edge where land meets water, his tail shimmered in metal. Leaping from the edge, he sailed over the pool.
A second tail emerged from the water with Milotic following suit. Acting fast the electric type spun and brought the iron down on the dragon tail.
Using it as a platform, he bounced off and landed further up on her body. With speed, he took off running up her towards Milotic's head.
With one last leap, he shot past her head. Striking with an iron tail it momentarily dazed her. Giving his starter chance to grab onto her antenna, he curled into a ball and spun, swinging the sea-serpent overhead and splashing her down into the water, with Pikachu going down after her, still holding on.
"Thunder at full power!" He hollered.
Water erupted up out of the pool with electricity consuming then entire water source. It hit the ceiling, bursting out into a sprinkle of rain.
As the chaos faded, the sight turned towards the field. A shadow emerged in the water, showing Pikachu on top of Milotic who floated on her side, swirls replacing her eyes. He took a moment and jumped into the water, swimming back towards the land.
"Milotic is unable to battle!" Sebastian declared. "Making the winners of this round Ash and Pikachu!"
Ash ran his hand down his face as the red light engulfed the fallen sea-serpent. His starter climbed back onto the land, shaking his entire body, spraying water everywhere. He seemed slightly out of breath with ruffled fur but otherwise fine and fit for the next round.
"I must say, you've proven yourself more than I expected Ash," Juan replied, "this is possibly the toughest challenge I've had since returning to the gym."
"Returned?" he asked.
"I first became the gym leader when I was in my twenties but after a while, I handed it over to one of my students for a time," he explained, "it was during this time that I took on my contest career. It was merely five years ago that I returned and took on my old position from Wallace."
"Well thanks, we've been training real hard for this and the league." He smiled. "Plus, we use to travel with a water specialist so we kinda have more experience with facing you then any other gym leader. She's also a gym leader."
"Maybe I should've taken that into account when devising your challenge," he smirked, producing an Ultra ball in his hand. "I never would've thought I'd be brought down to my final Pokémon already. Go Sharpedo!"
The red light shot up into the air and materialised the large-toothed aquatic Pokémon. With a spin, he splashed back down into the water. The top half of his body re-emerged, and the large beady eyes narrowed, sending a shiver down his spin. He pulled out his Pokédex for a quick refresher:
Sharpedo, The brutal Pokémon. The final evolved form of Carvanha. Nicknamed "the bully of the sea," Sharpedo is widely feared. Its cruel fangs grow back immediately if they snap off. Just one of these Pokémon can thoroughly tear apart a super tanker
"You alright to keep going?" Ash asked his starter.
"I think we might need a bigger boat." He joked, earning an eye roll from the raven-haired boy. Giving a small nod, he turned back and walked over the land, cracking his knuckled paws and neck. Dropping down onto all fours, his tail waved in the air and his cheeks sparked in a threatening manner. "Listen up Bruce, I'mma bout to hit you so hard that Shark Tales actually makes it to the Oscars!"
"Huh?" Ash asked.
"It's a Will Smith joke." Pikachu dismissed. "And yes, in this scenario, Jabber jaw's here is being played by Chris Rock!"
Shaking his head, he narrowed his gaze over the field. Focusing in on the water dark type, he noticed the band strapped around the top fin with a mega stone embedded within it. Swallowing hard, he took a deep breath to calm his nerves. They can win this... as long as they work together.
"Sharpedo verses Pikachu!" Sebastian declared. "Let the battle begin!"
Juan verses Ash: Round seven
He smiled as his starter took off around the edge of the field. The water dark type swam parral to but seemed slightly slower. Sparking his cheeks, the pure electric type shot out a bolt of lightning from around his body. As it struck the pool, their opponent lept clear out of the water.
Continuing on his path around the edge, he continued to try and shock Sharpedo. His lips pinched together as the brutal Pokémon kept one step ahead.
"How could Sharpedo keep up with that sort of pace?" Ash thought to himself. Shaking his head, he refocused. "Iron tail on the water!"
Leaping of the edge. He spun and his tail shimmered into metal silver. Smashing it onto the water, two waves sprayed either side.
The water dark type wasted no time in coming up from under his starter. With a wide jaw, he consumed Pikachu and jumped in the air. His heart stopped at the sight as everything seemed to disappear except for the brutal Pokémon. An empty numbness spread over his body.
"Piiiiiiiiiiii-ka!" A bolt of electricity consumed the shark as he crashed back into the pool. Bubbles popped around the electrified water.
Plopping up from the water, Pikachu resurfaced. Panting heavily, he climbed back onto the land
"Pikachu friend, not food!" He cried out, shaking his body dry from the water.
"You okay buddy?" he asked.
"I have a newfound respect for the food I eat but other than that, I'm good," he shrugged, "and we should have some time to brainstorm strategies."
"How come?" he asked.
"I used grass knot on the seaweed down their... he's more tangled then finding nemo right now." He sighed, regaining his breath. "Sorry, been on a Disney binge. Need to get the kids a too watch list when they get hatch."
Ash went to say something, but his mouth hung open. The large back-fin popped up out of the water, moving back and forth in a taunting manner.
"Based on your expression, I think it's time we start playing that jaws theme." He pinched the bridge of his nose. Turning back to the lake.
Sharpedo wasted no time in turning towards the land. Charging forward with increased speed, he lept out, flying over the water with an open jaw.
Leaping up from his own position, Pikachu spun, and a ball of electricity formed on his tail. Launching it off, it sprung open, with a webbing-like design.
Colliding directly with the brutal Pokémon's face, he seemed knocked back into the pool. Swimming away, the move fizzled out into nothing.
"Aww man, I just can't seem to keep it up," Pikachu hmphed before perking his head up. "I erm, I mean the Electroweb. Sylveon can vouch for-"
"Well, it seems time has run out for you." Juan smiled. "You might've noticed, Sharpedo's been getting progressively faster. It's his hidden ability, speed boost, and now he's experienced its full effect we should really move on. Sharpedo, if you'd please!"
Some sort of marbel was on a ring on Juan's finger. As he pressed down on it, rays of light expanded out and the same happened on Sharpedo's mega stone.
The light strands connected. A cocoon of light surrounded the water dark type, blocking him from sight as he came to a stop in the water.
As the mega transformation faded, the first thing Ash noticed was his mouth and the horns which had sprouted from the nose with retractable fangs. The yellow patterns on the body seemed to be old scars, similar to Houndoom or even Sandslash. With his whole body being about triple the size.
"I would only allow us to use this once we made the most of his speed boost." Juan informed. "I'm afraid your chance to take this match has past."
"Kay baby shark, time for the second verse." Pikachu called out, rolling one of his shoulders. "Hopefully now I won't need to keep holding back on ya."
Sharpedo didn't seem to like that response as he narrowed his eyes. Taking the invitation, Pikachu took off across the land, entering a quick attack.
Leaping over the water, he cheeks sparked. A dark blue blur crashed into his body, sending him flying upwards just like before only this time the pure electric type began spinning around. Reaching the ceiling, he fell back down as a ball. His lightning bolt tail orbiting around.
It began to shimmer with metal, an electric outline surrounding the edge. Different colours such as orangey-brown, white, and even black to Ash's surprise.
Crashing it down on top of the water's surface, a massive explosion erupted. Water went flying everywhere, blinding Ash from seeing his starter.
Both Pokémon were revealed on opposite ends of the pool. Sharpedo shook himself and refocused, but his electric type was treading water.
He started swimming back towards the land, but Ash's eyes widened. Their opponent was quickly catching up, clearly better at moving in the water.
"Pikachu come back!" Ash shouted.
Both Pokémon came to a stop and his starter wasted no time in running back. Using a sneaky quick attack to jump up onto the stand, landing on the railing, he seemed to be panting slightly but quirked an eyebrow up. "I've got a plan, trust me." His starter nodded, jumping down to his feet.
Taking out his last Pokéball, he held it out. A red light shot out and his psychic fairy type materialised on the land. Taking up an offensive stance.
"Ash has recalled his Pikachu and switched in his Gardevoir!" Sebastian declared. "Let the battle continue!"
Sharpedo wasted no time in charging forward. A shield of water sprouted around him, and he flew over the land.
Raising her hands, a wall of lights formed. Fairy type energy shot out, but the aqua jet shot through the dazzling gleam.
His large mouth opened and snapped around the embrace Pokémon. Dark type energy seethed out and the two went flying. Letting go of his own prey, he used another jet of water to sprout over the field. She pushed herself up on her knees, panting from the hard hit.
"We're gonna need everything we've got!" He held his key stone up. "Respond to my heart! Mega evolve!"
Lights escaped through his hand and also from the necklace around his Pokémon. The two sets of strands connected, enveloping his psychic fairy type in a cocoon of light. Cracks formed and she burst out in her mega evolution form, standing tall as she took up a similar stance as to before.
Sharpedo wasted no time in charging once more. Jumping out of the water with speed, his fangs foamed with dark type energy.
"Trick room!" He hollered.
Forcing her hands together, a pink ball formed. Cracking it a part, the energy expanded outward and created a semi-transparent box over the field.
The brutal Pokémon slowed down drastically in the air but kept the momentum as he seemed to be flying in slow motion. Gardevoir walked around the side, easily moving out of the way of the flying fish. Holding her hands together, a beam of condensed electricity shot out into his side.
Sharpedo went flying to the side, hitting the water hard. A wave of water soaked the side of the field behind where he landed.
"I never took you for much of a tactician." Juan mused. "I'm sorry to tell you but you'll need more than that to handle Sharpedo!"
A loud screech echoed around the room. Cringing and covering his own ears, he toppled over and squeezed his eyes shut with a scrunched-up face.
Gardevoir's scream broke his concentration as his head shot up. His eyes locked onto his partner, who had Sharpedo latched onto her body.
"Trick room might affect our speed but once on." Juan gestured over to them. "It's gonna take a lot to break him off. Gardevoir's time is numbered."
Hardening her expression, she moved her one free arm to the side. Forming a moonblast in her hand, it shot straight into his side, but Sharpedo refused to loosen his grip. He tightened his fist, realising it wasn't fully powered due to the lack of concentration from the constant crunch.
"Charge beam through your trapped hand!" He hollered.
Sharpedo attempted to let go but the trick room still seemed to hold him back. A weak blast of electricity struck his mouth and blew him back.
Splashing around on the ground, Sharpedo flopped back to the water. He went to call up a follow up, but Gardevoir was down on one knee, panting heavily.
"This has been a very enjoyable match, Ash, so thank you." His water dark type disappeared under water. "But now we must end this round."
"Couldn't agree more." He smirked. "Gardevoir... get ready for my call."
Giving a serious nod, she took a deep breath. Forcing herself back to her feet, she retook her original stance, staring across the field.
The ground began shaking violently. His eyes locked on Juan, knowing he's setting up some sort of massive combination. The water went splashing everywhere. He held his breath as Gardevoir stumbled slightly from the blow. His eyes continued to scan the water.
A massive tsunami wave erupted out of the pool. Piercing red eyes burned through the heart of the surf, with glowing purple fins outlining their opponent.
Taking a deep breath, he realised they'd be using the momentum to power up the night slash. He bite his cheek waiting for the moment it passed onto land.
"Destiny bond!" He shouted.
He caught Juan's shocked expression for a brief second before he disappeared behind the combination. A ghostly purple cloud echoed out before the wave crashed down, making both Pokémon disappear from sight. He held his breath as the wave washed over the land.
Revealing both Pokémon down in their normal forms, a good distance apart from each other. Swirls replaced their eyes as neither moved.
"Both Pokémon are unable to continue!" Sebastian declared. "Because the challenger still has Pikachu remaining, he's the winner of this battle!"
Ash smiled and felt his heart thump against his chest. A silence seemed to surround them as he experienced an outer body experience. Shaking his head, he ran to the edge and jumped down onto the land, running over to his fallen psychic fairy type.
"Thank you, Gardevoir," he muttered, kneeling over her. Pulling out the Pokéball and recalled her, clipping it back onto his belt.
Standing back up, he watched the water type gym leader climb down, walking around the edge towards the Sebastian. He followed suit and walked over the field to meet them both, with his friends climbing down from the stand surrounding them.
"This has been a pleasure, Ash, never has Sharpedo been pushed in such a way. Last time he lost was in a battle against Drake of Hoenn's elite four," he explained, "and your use of destiny bond truly caught me off guard. I never considered yourself as one to use such a tactic."
"It's something Gardevoir prepared but I never was a big fan of it," he shrugged, "but this helped us out a lot here."
"And now, as proof of your achievement here today, it's my honour to present you with a rain badge." Juan smiled, holding the badge out for Ash to look at.
It was shaped as three rain drops in a sort of triangle shape but on the bottom left one was coloured in. He took it in his hand and smiled, giving a small nod of acknowledgement to the elderly man. Taking out his badge case, he slotted it in, and he took in the sight of his full case. "Thank you," he whispered.
"Sebastian, would you mind showing our guests back to the harbour?"
"Of course, sir," he bowed, walking out towards the original entrance.
"He'll give you all travel back to the land and may I suggest you let those Pokémon of yours rest," Juan explained, "wherever you plan on going next should waiting until the morning. I'm sure Nurse Joy will have them all back together by then."
Nodding in agreement, they set off out of the building. He smiled and reached up to scratched Pikachu on his shoulder. He already knew he'd need to send him back to the lab sooner rather than later but getting to battle beside him again... it just felt right.
He smiled as the nurse Chansey placed the selection of five Pokéballs down on the counter. He picked up each of them and clipped them to his belt, having already exchanged his starter for Snorunt. While it was a fun having him back, he was needed back with his eggs for the time being.
Letting out a low sigh, he glanced up and turned to head back out of the centre. Walking into the orange-evening sky, he walked around to the railing, letting him look down at the reflection in the mostly silent dock for the city. The sparkling tranquil environment brought a small smile to his face, hardly anyone else was nearby. It was like the entire world had settled down for the moment. After the moment passed, he unclipped one of his devices and held it out.
In front of him, Gardevoir materialised with a single stare. Her expression was difficult to read, as if she were trying to read his instead.
"So... we did it." He muttered, walking up to lean against the rail. She turned to take in the same view. "We got all eight badges again."
"Was there ever any doubt?" she asked.
"No..." He sighed. "But this is where the real challenge begins."
"The league?" she asked.
"Yeah," he replied... an awkward silence enveloped the two of them as his mind raced to find the right words. "You know... I do admire your morals."
"What'cha mean?" she asked.
"Stuff like refusing teleport or even the hypnosis into dream eater combo," he replied, "the idea that you don't want to win in unfair ways."
"If you need to rely on cheap tricks to win then you don't deserve the reward!" She declared.
"Heh, you remind me of... well me," he chuckled lightly. "Did I ever tell you about the silver conference?"
"Bits..." She shrugged. "That was the Johto league, right?"
"Yeah." He nodded. "We made it through to the final. I was matched up against this guy named Paul. We had clashed a few times before the league."
"I take it you didn't get on?" she asked. He went to ask how she knew but stopped himself. Remembering she's an empathetic species. Giving a small nod to confirm.
"Paul was all about power, if a Pokémon didn't match his high expectations, then he'd release them." He sighed. "And his methods were just downright cruel in training. At first, I couldn't understand why his Pokémon would even listen, but I think I know now. They want to be strong, and his methods clearly worked."
"What're you saying?" she asked.
"I tried to be fair to everyone back in the Johto league and even got everyone at least one battle but I could've done it better," he replied, taking a moment to give a long sigh. "I couldn't do that again. There's no way I could do that now, even if everyone just got one battle there wouldn't be enough."
"What're you saying?" she asked.
"When we get to the Hoenn league... I'm not going to make the same mistakes this time," he explained, "no matter what it takes. We're gonna win and to do that, we need to be on the same game. Aerodactyl isn't too fussed with using mega evolution and Houndoom's not even allowed to yet. Which'll make you my trump-card if we face that other trainer Steven gave a key stone to. I underestimated Paul back then... I didn't go with the best possible team at the time, I built a team of who hadn't battled yet and Pikachu... I-I guess I thought the symbolic team would've pulled through in the end."
"This isn't some sort of Saturday morning cartoon." Gardevoir rolled her eyes.
"I know," he replied, "and while I still believe any Pokémon can be strong... given the right time, support and training, that is. I can't deny that he was just plain stronger. His first two Pokémon confirmed my line up then his starter came out and demolished the team. Went three to one."
"Take Snorunt, for example. He's training hard to master ice beam and I bet in time he'll be just like myself, or Swellow or even Torkoal. But as for right now, I don't think he could take any of us on one-to-one," she replied, "the possibility of strength does not equal reality of a situation."
"You sound like Torkoal now," he replied, "but my point is... I know the mistakes I made getting to this point. And I won't repeat them."
"Well, you already seem to be improving," Gardevoir replied, "I mean... when you first discovered it, you hated my destiny bond trick but look at today."
"I wasn't happy about it and really did want you to win the one on one," he replied, "but in the end, it was also the quickest way to end the battle. But if I'm gonna be using your strategies and combos like that, will you make the same curtsy? There might come a time when we need to use teleport or-"
"I'll make you a deal," she replied, "I'll be happy to use those cheap... tactics. If, and only if, every other option isn't available."
"But if we do that then you'll always have destiny bond as an option." He pointed out, earning a smirk from her. "I just want us to be on the same page. You know, I didn't only hinder my own chances, but I even insulted Paul in our match... I didn't give him my best and so he didn't really prove he deserved the win. I don't know if things would've been different if I brought Dragonite and the others, but no one benefitted from my holding the team back."
"You think my refusal to use teleport, or the other tactics is undermining my opponents?" she asked.
"I don't think, I know," he replied, "and you'll realise one day that undermining your opponent's not only leaves you in dangerous situations but also affects the other members of your team. Imagine the effect it'll have on Grovyle or the others if they realise that your holding yourself back during training. Doing so might not be so bad as long as your clear about it, but if you do then they win... they might think they can handle opponents they really can't."
"I'll think about it," she muttered.
Nodding in agreement, he recalled her and turned around. Heading back inside of the centre, he made his way towards the rented room. It didn't take him long to enter and he found most of their stuff packed away. A single light from the attached bathroom was on with running water from the tap.
"Hey Serena, it's me!" He called out to warn her.
"Kay, I'll be out in a sec!" She called back
He kneeled down to his backpack and pulled out his nightwear. The door creeked open and he stood, turning to face the entrance. His breath stuck in his throat as he noticed her back in that rangers outfit she put together for her showcase. He was certain his face was bright red, as his eyes scanned.
"I thought you'd like this," she whispered, walking slowly across the room, "and I might not have got to perform in it but... I'm glad we can still make use of it."
"Use?" he squeaked.
"Well clearly you like how I look in it," she replied, stopping just in front of him. "So, I thought... what better way to celebrate your eight badge. We're heading back to Petalburg tomorrow until the grand festival and staying with the Maple's will make getting time like this... difficult."
She pressed her lips against his and his brain just shut off completely. His lips moved in rhythm with her's, but it only lasted as she guided his hands onto her waist. She spun them around and slowly walked him back onto the bed, ending with her straddling him. Her teeth biting half of her bottom lip.
"Can you do me a favour, Ashy?" she asked in a deviously sweet tone.
"Y-yeah, of course." He stuttered. "Whatever you need."
"Hoenn... has been rough. I think this has been our toughest journey yet," she replied, "what we've faced here has been tough... so I want you to win the Hoenn league. Make it all worth it. Promise."
"After the silver conference and everything which has gone down..." He muttered, cupping her cheek with one hand. "I'm more determined than ever to win."
Smiling at his response, she pushed in and reconnected their lips. He tried to keep up, but it all ended in vein as she used a little ESP to help move him properly onto the bed. Her hand started playing with the bottom of his shirt, lightly touching his lower stomach, encouraging him to pull it off.
