[Jasper's POV]
"I need you to meet me in the baseball clearing."
"May I ask why Carlilse?"
"Because your mother would burn me if she overheard this conversation."
"Alright. I'll be there in ten minutes."
"Thank you, Jasper."
Placing my phone back in my pocket I stood to grab my boots. He had sounded worried about something, and I could hear a heartbeat in the background of the call. Who could he be with? Light footsteps headed for my room.
"Come in, Al." She danced into the room as soon as I spoke.
"I don't know which it is, but Carlilse is with a wolf. The packs Alpha, Sam, was speaking with him when I picked up Bella. She's in the living room."
"Alright I'll have her come with me to meet with him then."
"Why?" Her head tilted as she sent a bit of curiosity my way.
"Because I told her I would spend some time with her today. She's been having some trouble with her emotions lately, and wanted to talk to me alone. We can meet up with Carlilse, and then head off to a cafe or something afterward." I led Al down the stairs as I spoke, raising my voice so that Bella could hear at the end. She clumsily sent shock and excitement my way making me smile.
"She's good for you." Al smiled watching me. I tossed confusion her way.
"She's already trying to get a hold on her emotions and trusting you with them. Plus when we first met you always smiled like that when I sent emotions your way. You love when the people around you communicate with you via emotion." I raised an eyebrow at her, she wasn't wrong.
"Yeah, well, I need to go."
Looking over Bella was already halfway to the family garage. I raced to her side. She rolled her eyes as matched her pace.
"Are you sure you want me to tag along?"
"Course I am, Darlin'. Why wouldn't I want you there?"
"What if this is something the others don't want me to know about?"
"Too bad for them then. I ain't about to be hiding anything from you." I felt shock flood her system, and I growled at how Fuckward made her feel. She shouldn't be used to people hiding things from her, or lying to her.
"Thank you Jazz."
"Course, Darlin'."
Reaching the car Al bought me years ago I opened the door for Bella. She got in and I run to the other side.
"So where are we meeting Carlilse?"
"The baseball clearing. For some reason he doesn't want mom to hear what he has to say."
"That doesn't sound good." She bit her lip lightly chewing on it. Pulling out of the garage I drove toward the clearing.
"No it doesn't. That said I could hear a heartbeat near him, but only one. Alice thinks it might be Sam." She nodded.
"Yeah Sam wanted to talk to him. He wanted to thank him for not wiping out the tribe when Jake told me about you guys."
"Really?" I didn't think any member of the pack would ever thank one of us for anything.
"Yeah Sam's a good guy, and he trusts me. He said that Carlisle helps people so he can't really see him as a monster. He did say he doesn't trust Edward. Speak of Edward, where is he? I thought that he was getting back today."
"He called to let the family know he was planning to stay out a little longer. Something about needing time to get used to the idea that you no longer want him. Rose fought with him before he left. Reminding him that he said he would leave you alone if you ever asked him too."
I parked the car just inside the tree line, and got out. Bella stayed in the car for a moment glaring at the trees. I leaned against a nearby tree and waited for her to get out at her own pace. Her emotions showing unhappiness with the thought of a hike. With a heavy sigh she pushed open the door and got out.
"Fine!" She was exasperated tossing her arms into the air and pouting.
"I can carry you, Bella."
"You better or else we'll be walking all day!" Her arms crossed as she walked over to me dragging her feet. She wasn't happy with the idea of running. Was Fuckward not careful when he ran with her?
"I'll be careful, Bella don't worry." She didn't relax, but she let me pick her up princess style. I made sure she was as comfortable as possible before running through the trees. I stayed on even ground so I wouldn't joustal her, and moved out of the way of trees and such before I normally would have so there weren't any sharp twists. Halfway to the clearing I felt her relax fully before her emotions filled with awe. She must have opened her eyes. As I ran I felt her joy and light shock. She was enjoying this more than she thought she would. I pushed a little bit of my own happiness at her. She giggled, sending me pure joy in return.
We reached the clearing shortly after and I sat her down just before the tree line broke.
"I can smell a wolf so I guess Alice was right about who was here. Carlilse is scared and worried about something. Sam on the other hand is calm. Whatever he told Carlilse doesn't really worry him."
"Alright let's go see what the trouble is." She took my hand and pulled me into the clearing. Both men looked at us as we entered.
"You bought Bella?" Carlilse's voice was too soft for her to hear.
"Yes I did. She should know about any danger that she might be in." I made sure Bella could hear my reply. Her footsteps stilled for a moment before resuming all though she was less confident now. I glared at my coven leader as he walked to meet us at the halfway point. How dare he make her question if she should be here? She had a right to know what was happening around her! I was momentarily overwhelmed by a rage I hadn't felt since I was still the Major in the armies.
Bella squeezed my hand tightly pulling me from my mind. She looked concerned about something.
"Are you okay your eyes went black for a minute there, Jazz." Had they? I sent a small wave of peace at her.
"I'm fine, Darlin'." I could hear the Major in the back of my mind whispering that everything was fine, my mate was safe and there was no real danger to her here. I half listened as he explained my vampiric need to protect my mate, and how my coven leaders disregard for her input had been what upset me. How now was not the time to let my more vampiric nature take over. By the time we reached the middle of the clearing I was calm and ready to listen to whatever was going on.
"Hello. I don't think we've met, but from what Bella's told me you must be Jasper." The wolf held out his hand in greeting. I took it tilting my head to the side slightly.
"Yes I am. You're Sam the packs Alpha, right?"
"Yeah that's me. First to change and so left in charge."
"Sam was telling me that he wanted to change the terms of our treaty. In light of the pack's friendship with Bella."
Sam glanced at Carlisle, his emotions telling me that that wasn't all he wanted. A look at Bella told me she saw it too.
"Sam what all did you want?" Her voice was soft as she turned fully toward Sam.
"I was worried about whatever was happening in Seattle. There have been a lot of people going missing. It's what has your father so worried. The missing people and a killer on the loose you know."
"Missing people?"
"With the fact we just had a new wolf change I think there are more vampires in the area, so I wanted to ask the good doctor what he thought about it."
I felt my shoulders stiffen as Carlilse looked at me and nodded. His thoughts lined up with him then. Bella and Sam both looked at me.
"Hey Jazz that some pretty strong fear you're pushing out there. What's wrong."
"How many people have gone missing? I haven't been watching the news lately."
"About fifty people last I saw."
Fifty people. How many were just food, and how many were changed for an army? I would need to run to the city and check before any plans could be made. My thoughts were interrupted by my cell ringing.
"There are only fifteen if you go tonight, but if you wait the number of newborns goes up. Are you still planning on going? I can't see you anymore!" Her voice went shrill at the end. I looked over at Sam hoping he could see the question in my eyes. He nodded a smile forming on his lips.
"Fifteen? I can handle that. Sam's coming with me bringing some over the pack I'm sure," again he nodded. "Tell Em and Rose that if they want they come along."
I turned to look at Bella.
"I know I'll stay with whoever doesn't go tonight. This is Victoria isn't it?"
"Yes I saw her there but everything went black. Because the whole family and Bella went black I'm guessing Sam wants everyone who stays behind together so that the imprints and Bella have the most protection possible?"
I relayed the information to Bella as Sam went to shift.
"Yeah that sound like a good plan. If you guys take care of it now I'm sure things well end up better than if we waited. Plus the element of surprise you know?" She shrugged before sitting down on the grass.
"You're calm." Carlilse spoke up from my left.
"I'm used to vampire's trying to kill me. It's humans that scare me."
I could hear Em's laughter though the phone. He must have heard that.
"The families one the way to meet up with you now. We should be there in the next ten minutes or so." She hung up with that and I sat next to Bella waiting for Sam to return.
"Sorry, but I don't think we're going to get to have that talk about your feelings." Bella's laughter filled the clearing as she leaned against my side.
"I think I'll be alright with that." Her smile was blinding as we waited for the rest of the family.
