Author's Note:

Here it is, the start of the Emerald conference or Hoenn league if you'd prefer. This has been a long time coming and I want to say up front that I started working on these chapters back around the Petalburg gym battle. Writing so many battles so close together is draining, hence spreading it out which did contribute to the slight slowed pace in uploads compared between the first half of Hoenn and second half, but this is the best way as a writer I've learnt to handle it. Although this chapter is mainly setting up the plot points for the arc and not having any actual battles. It also means we will have a few different POV's in this chapter. I've tried to keep it to a minimum but in some cases it's unavoidable. At least as the rest of the league gets underway, I can focus on specific subplots at specific times so this won't become a regular thing. We also get a final showcase performance for the opening ceremony. I hope you like it. My aim is to include one for each league going forward but as for who'll be performing them... we'll need to wait and see. Don't forget to vote in the poll, it'll change when we post the next chapter and with that, let's begin!

Chapter Eighty-Nine: Emerald Conference - Opening Ceremony

She hummed to herself as she felt her hand creep around her boyfriend's shirt. The wind rushed past her face as she glanced over his shoulder. She couldn't help but inwardly smile as she felt his abs beneath the thin piece of fabric. He's really been working hard since Brawly gave him that workout routine and she can feel the results of his efforts. Sinking her teeth into her lower lips, images entered her mind.

Her boyfriend would be stood shirtless. A bit bulker than he currently was. Inserting herself into the scenario, she'd be in his arms and pushed against the wall as he held her up with his newfound straight. Their lips occupying each other, one of his hands travelling up and down her back, as her leg brushed up against his side. Desperately trying to encourage him to hoist her up in his arms. Her own hands clutch into his muscle-bound back-

"Serena?" his voice drew her out of the little daydream.

"Yeah Ash?" she mumbled with her eyes closed.

"Are you alright?" he asked.

"Absolutely fine..." she hummed, lightly chuckling to herself, "why?"

"Your digging your nails in a-and it kinda hurts," he muttered.

Her eyes burst open. Quickly realising what happened. Swallowing hard, she moved her hands back slightly as to not let loose herself once more. She would've completely let go had they have not been high up into the air. Taking deep breaths to try and cool her burning cheeks, she glanced around. Luckily, the others were a little back and unlikely to have noticed anything. Brock and Max were riding on Pidgeot, while May brought up the back with Altaria.

"Sorry." Her voice was meke, barely above a whisper.

"It's fine," he slightly shrugged, "what'cha make of Ever Grande?"

Tightening her grip around him once more, reassured by his dismissal, she glanced over the side of the mighty dragon which provided them with flight. Below she saw bustling city streets with numerous buildings, vehicles, people and Pokémon although the distance made pointing out anyone imparticular was difficult. While the cliff side was nearby, a small forest area splitting it up from the environment. The city being high above the sea-surface. If she remembered right, Ever Grande was the highest civilisation settlement within the entire Hoenn region.

"It's beautiful," she muttered.

"And this is the main city, just wait until we reach the league grounds," he replied. She could hear the stupid wide smile on his face through the excitement in his voice, "look ahead. You can see the stadium from here."

Resting her head on his shoulder, she took in the sight ahead. A large white circular building was ahead, with several smaller circular buildings surrounding. A complex stream of rivers surrounded the different colosseums. Letting out a soft sigh, she leaned into his back more. Already envisioning his time competing in this league. While she was confident back in Johto, Ash has grown so much since then and now she's certain... he'll be the Hoenn league champion.

"Hang on, Serena," he instructed, causing her to tighten her embrace around him, "we're about to land."

Squeezing her eyes shut, she held her breath. Feeling the wind rush past as it threatened to part her and her boyfriend in the moment. She couldn't be sure how long they fell for but the sickening gut being frown into her chest quickly followed it. Being frown into a daze, she wobbled as her feet hit the floor.

Stumbling backwards, she opened her eyes to see Ash holding her up with Dragonite stood behind. Closing her eyes to regain her composure, she reopened them just as the others came in for their landing. Standing up by herself, she whispered into her boyfriend's ear, "who made the travel arrangements?"

"Sorry," he muttered, "it's just... ya know. Dragonite can be picky about who rides on her."

The mighty dragon flying type mumbled something and her boyfriend turned around in a panic. Profusely giving an apology to her, he quickly recalled the dragon flying type into the Pokéball. Chuckling at his flustered state, she turned to see their friends standing around, with the two Pokémon behind. May was thanking and returning her Altaria, she saw Ash approach Pidgeot, doing pretty much the same thing.

"So where too first?" Brock asked, a knowing smirk written on his face.

"The stadium!" Max cheered, "I can't wait to see it in person! And before the opening ceremony they allow spectators to explore the stands! It's one thing to see it on tele but another to see it in person!"

"Hang on, mister, I wanna get some food!" May declared, pulling out some sort of book, "see. Ever Grande has hundreds of great meals to eat, and we've only got so much time. There's one place that's a create your own noodle bar, which is what I wanna try first!"

"Noodles does sound good right now," Ash muttered, holding his stomach which growled in agreement. Shaking his head, he narrowed his gaze, "but first I need to register and call the lab. Once we've done that then we can eat."

"Actually Ash, I'm gonna say we split up actually," Brock interjected, "you need to register but when you do, they'll give you a room to stay in. While as spectators, we need to get our own accommodation at another place. So why don't you two go to the main centre while we head this way."

"That sounds like a plan to me," she opted her opinion.

"And then we get noodles?" May asked, a hopeful tone in her voice. She even looked up to Brock with a pout and her wide eyes seemed to sparkle.

"Sure." He chuckled. "Then we get noodles."

"But what about the stadium?" Max asked, "after today we'll only be able to see it when a battles on and everyone is filling the stands."

"The accommodation lobby is on the way to the stadium," Brock noted, "once we've got our rooms, you can go off to see it and just join us at the noodle bar."

"Alright!" he cheered.

She intertwined her hand with Ash's as they watched their friends walk off into the crowded street. Sighing happily and resting her head on his shoulder, she let him lead the way. Quickly checking the passing signs to make sure they were heading off in the right direction.

"One thing I don't get," he mumbled, "the other leagues were busy, but this is like, a whole different level. Are there really more trainers competing?"

"I don't think so," she whispered back, "I remember hearing on the news that since the announcement about Glacia's retirement, a lot more tickets were sold because they want to see her final time taking on a challenger in the league. With the extra spectators, they've had to rearrange the typical sleep situation."

"But Dahlia didn't get this sort of response in the silver conference." He mumbled.

"Maybe it's because that was announced before the opening ceremony or because Glacia is the second longest serving elite four member in P.L.A history," she suggested, "only behind Agatha in Kanto, who holds the current record."

"I just hope they'll give us a bigger room," he muttered, "or at least a room with a bigger bed. A single is not enough space for both of us."

"Hmm, I wouldn't mind either way," she giggled in his ear, "it'll just mean, we need to cuddle extra close."

Seeing his cheeks brighten into a shade of red at the suggestion, she giggled harder. Practically swinging on his arm as they continued along. It didn't take them long to find the registration centre and for her boyfriend to officially enter the competition. Being given a room key and directions, they made their way there first to drop some stuff off. It didn't take them long to find the way into the accommodation or their room for the league.

Upon entering the suite, she smiled at the homely feeling. A small area with a kitchen, table and chairs coloured one corner of the room while the bed laid on the opposite side of the room. While Ash wasn't the happiest about it being a single, she certainly didn't mind... after all, it's not like they're strangers to cuddling close together. A videophone and transport unit sat against the wall between the bedroom and kitchen, while a door lead into the on-suite bathroom.

Whilst a snug room, probably meant for one... she could feel a homely atmosphere radiating out of every corner. Ideas of what they could do to pass the time already entering her mind. Not just the intimate moments either, with the idea of her waking him up with a home cooked breakfast just for them.

Shaking her head from the little day dream, she noticed him already on the phone to Professor Oak. Smiling as the Pokéballs started coming through the device, she got to work putting their things away while he collected his team. By the time she finished, she noticed him rolling the collection into his backpack to make carrying them easier. Although she couldn't help but notice less than what she was expecting.

"Was there some sort of issue with the transport machine?" she asked.

"No... but I kinda don't want to take up the room with everyone so I've only got a handful for now," he replied, "and then if I need anyone else, I'll call the lab again. Just didn't seem fair to the guys if they'd have to spend most of their time couped up when they could have the wide open ranch."

"So, who do you have?" She asked.

"Mostly the Hoenn guys, Duskull, Swellow, Grovyle, Crawdaunt, Gardevoir, Seviper, Torkoal, Metang and Glalie," he replied, "but also a couple others like Pikachu and Togetic."

"Togetic?" she quirked an eyebrow up.

"I've missed him." He smirked. "So, are we gonna get going to the noodle bar? I'm starving."

"Sure." She smiled. "I certainly hope the noodle bar has a large garden. With all our Pokémon, I can imagine we'll take up a lot of room."

"Yeah-"

Pinching her lips together, they picked up their stuff and set out of the room. Locking the door behind them, she couldn't help but notice his less-than-cheerful tone in his voice. Latching onto his arm, she caught the corner of his lips flicking up into a smile before falling back down.

"What's wrong?" she asked.

"It's just something the Professor mentioned," he muttered, "that I've got so many Pokémon now, that it'll be next to impossible for me to let all of them battle. It-erm, I guess it was just kinda weird realising it. Like I knew and even told Gardevoir it in Sootopolis but-"

"Actually, getting here and hearing it is something else?" she asked.

"Right."

"Have you thought about who'll you'll use then?" she asked.

"Well I wanna give the spotlight to those I've caught in Hoenn. Duskull, Grovyle ext." She nodded with his assement. "It seems only fair since the others have had other leagues to compete in. But I'm not just gonna ignore the others either. I don't want to make the same mistakes this time around."

"I think that's the fairest way," she agreed.

"I want to be fair, but I am also certain... this time I'm gonna win," he replied, "I guess... I'll just build up the others around whoever my opponent ends up being. Speaking off, the battles start tomorrow."

"Aren't they double battles?" she asked.

"Yeah," he nodded, "and since the Hoenn guys have been working together for so long, I'll let them take the starting match ups."

"It's like the four themed fields in the Indigo league," she noted, "once were done at the noodle place, we'll probably need to head over to the stadium for the opening ceremony. It's always a fun time getting to see them light the flame."

"Right." he let out a small smile. "And then they'll reveal our starting match ups. I can't wait to start showing off everything we've learnt since the silver conference!"

Smiling at his enthusiasm, she tightened her grip around his arm. Even though she didn't get to compete in the master class, she is ready for whatever is next. They might not know yet where they'll go... honestly, they were expecting some sort of direction like how they were pointed in the direction of Hoenn but nothing of the sort has come up yet. Not that it really matters right now, since Ash needs to focus on the league.

It didn't take them long to find the street where the noodle bar was meant to be located. Large crowds wondered up and down the streets as they made their way over to the noodle shop. Glancing around, she felt a tightening on her hand. She turned around to face her boyfriend.

"What's wrong?" Serena asked, placing a hand on his shoulder.

"Huh?" He blinked, turning to look at her.

"Your holding my hand and suddenly squeezed it just a bit tighter," she explained, "of course, I'd notice the change in you."

"Oh well, sorry," he replied, leaning in to peck her cheek, "I just saw, well-"

He gestured over the road, a familiar looking older female trainer stood on a grassy field surrounded by many different people. She had long blue hair and dressed in a red jacket with white stripes down the outer side of the sleeves and a long black shirt. She seemed to be signing pieces of paper, handing them back to the different members of the crowd.

"It's Katie," she muttered, turning to face him. Forcing his eyes to look away from her, "don't worry about it-"

"I just know I'm gonna need to beat her if I wanna win-"

"And we'll cross that when the time comes," she insisted.

"She's right!"

Turning to the source of the new voice, she noticed a family girl walking towards them. With a smile spreading over her lips, she moved to meet the kimono sister with a welcoming hug which she returned.

"It's so great to see you again, Sakura," she greeted, "how are you after the grand festival?"

"I never knew being a top coordinator would get so much attention," she mentioned, "I know it sounds stupid but I've been casted for three different interviews. How do you handle it?"

"It calmed down when we came to Hoenn," she mentioned, "I think because of the relative hype... plus the radio tower kinda overtook the spot light so I didn't need to do many interviews. Don't worry about it, it'll calm down sooner or later, I bet your also getting more attention for the league."

"So, what else do you know about Katie?" Ash asked.

"Katie is a part of the Winstrate family and given how many places they provide with crops within Hoenn, she has no shortages of fans," Sakura explained, "it's also why she is the favourite to win the entire Hoenn league. She held off on competing in her home league until she felt certain she could win."

"I guess that makes her my main competition then!" Her boyfriend smirked, throwing his fist into the air.

"Of course, you're the other favourite to win, Ash," Sakura added as he sat back down, "which means I need to work twice as hard to beat both of you."

"Because of his performance in the Silver conference?" Serena asked. "Or was it the Orange league or-"

"Partly," she nodded, "but also because of your brother. His trial became global news after what happened."

She glanced to the side and saw him sulk into his seat. Reaching over, she placed a hand on his shoulder, giving a reassuring squeeze. Chancing a glance to the side, she saw the Kimono sister looking at them with a soft smile. Before anything else could be mentioned, two young children came running up with pencils and league posters. They each asked for Sakura's and Ash's signature which both were happy to give.

Entering a more generic chat whilst waiting for their other friends, she noticed a vaguely familiar Pokémon approach them from the sky. The large bill water flying type seemed to stop just above them. Letting a letter fall out of the yellow beak, which she used ESP to guide down into her hand.

"Huh, it's a letter," she muttered, "it's for you Sakura."

"I've never had anything delivered by Poke-mail before," she muttered, taking the letter from her. Tearing open the top, she pulled out a piece of paper.

"So, what does it say?" she asked.

"Dear Sakura, I will wait for you by the stadium before the opening ceremony. Meet me there and don't be late, Georgio." Sakura read.

"Whose Georgio?" Ash asked.

"I dunno," she shrugged, putting the letter into her back pack.

"I bet its someone you once faced in a battle and now your both in the league he wants to make it clear that-"

"I love you Ash but not everything is about rivalries and battling," she sighed, placing a hand on his shoulder, shaking her head. She turned to the kimono sister, "it sounds more romantic to me. Maybe it's a guy that wants to ask you out. Sending a letter even reminds me of those old romance stories."

"Eh," the pink haired girl shrugged, "it doesn't really matter either way. If he wants to battle then we might get the chance in the league. If he is an admirer or whatever then my answer is no."

"So, you're not gonna meet him?" Ash asked.

"Not planning on it," she replied, "what if he turns out to be some creep or something?"

"Oh, come on Sakura." Serena stood up. "I'll come with you. If he is then we can fight him off together but if not, it seems kinda mean leaving him hanging out waiting. Besides, doing that could make things worse."

"You sure about this?" she raised an eyebrow, but Serena quickly pulled her up.

"Sure, I'm sure," she smiled, turning to face Ash as he stood up.

"Do you want me to come too?" he asked.

"Thanks but no thanks, Ash," she replied, "we can handle ourselves. Just tell the others why we're not meeting them here and we'll catch you after the opening ceremony."

Grabbing the younger girls arm, they set off down the street towards the stadium. Soon enough they entered a stroll and a thought occurred to the honey-blonde girl. Turning to her friend, she offered a small smile.

"So, you said you'd turn him down but-"

"Look Serena." She stopped her. "I know you mean well but I really don't care about this. I mean, your right about dealing with this head on but I'm not a romantic. I'm not looking for anything like that... this is Drew all over again."

"Sorry if I seemed a little pushy," she replied, "I guess I just got overwhelmed by the romantic intentions. I know I'm with Ash but I sometimes wonder how he might've confessed if..."

"If you didn't grow up pinning after him," Sakura interjected, "ya mean?"

"I was not pinning."

"I've spoken to Misty as well as yourself remember," she retorted, "you was definitely pinning hard."

"Well he is certainly better at the romantic stuff now," she sighed, "but I sometimes still wonder what romantic things I missed out on because of how our relationship grew. How would he of asked me out for the first time or-"

She stopped in her train of thought as she noticed a Delcatty of all Pokémon stood in front of them. She wasn't naive to think it was just some random Pokémon either, with the way it was watching Sakura, she could tell it was one of Georgio's Pokémon. Seeing the normal type turn and run off, they glance to each other and silently agreed to follow. Taking off after the Prim Pokémon, they found themselves being led into the main lobby of the stadium.

Coming to a stop by an absent seating area, she couldn't help but notice a pile of rose petals on the table with a small box. Lifting it up, she opened the box to reveal an emerald necklace with a Rayquaza shaped holder surrounding the jewel and the words 'For Sakura' written on the lid.

"I think this is for you." She handed it over for the Kimono sister to view. Her eyes widened and mouth dropped slightly.

"I know your appreciation for all things legendary so I thought you'd appreciate this gift Sakura." A male voice appeared behind them. Turning around, she found a boy closer to Sakura's age than her own with dusty-brown-golden hair and a pale blue polo shirt. White cargo shorts and white trainers made up the rest of his outfit. She had to admit, he certainly didn't fit her image of a creep, "I-I'm sorry but who are you?"

"Oh, names Serena and I'm her bodyguard." She nodded to Sakura. "Ya know, in case you turn out to be some weirdo or something."

"R-right," he nodded, visibly gulping with his hands shaking.

"Am I right in assuming your Georgio?" she asked, to which he nodded, cheeks burning bright red, "wanna tell us why you led Sakura out here?"

"W-well being perfectly honest I would rather do this... one on one."

"If Serena goes then my Exploud comes out," Sakura replied, "and he is a lot less friendly... and more protective. So, take your pick."

"R-right." He gulped once more. "Y-you see, Sakura. I sent you the letter to come here b-because... I... wantedtoaskyououtonadate."

"Huh?" The kimono sister blinked in surprise.

"I think he said he wanted to ask you out on a date," she repeated, clearing up each word, "told ya so."

"I would be like totally happy and honoured and stuff," he quickly added, "I knew dating was forbidden by anyone practising as a Kimono sister so when I learnt you was competing in Hoenn I decided to make this my first regional league too! I saw your Kimono performances all the time in Eckruteak and-"

"Slow down, kid," she interjected, giving him chance to breath.

"Look Georgio, I'm flattered but I'm not looking for any sort of romantic partner," Sakura explained, handing him the case back, "and no amount of jewellery or gifts will change that. My answer is no."

"Aww man," he muttered, accepting the gift box.

Seeing tears trickle down his face, his Delcatty rubbed up against his leg in a comforting manner, mumbling something to him. Seeing him about to break down, she quickly escorted Sakura out of the building, not wanting to cause a scene in the stadium lobby.

"Ya know, I'm still hungry." Sakura mentioned. "Wanna grab a bite to eat? We've still got time before the opening ceremony."

"Sure," she smiled, "but we can't make it back to the noodle bar now and eat and make it to the opening ceremony. Hey Sakura, why did you turn down the necklace as well? I mean-"

"Kimono sisters don't wear jewellery, or not the materialistic sort anyway," she replied, "our job is to be in tune with the legends and the best way to achieve that is by dressing down to earth. Not to mention I didn't want him to think he had a shot just because I accepted the gift."

"You know, he wasn't what I imagined a creep to be," she shrugged, "but ya never know."

"Exactly," she nodded, "and I'm not naive to the romantic antics that others get up to but that doesn't change the fact I'm just not interested. Now where do you wanna eat? I'm fancing a good burger myself."

Max smiled happily as he ran down the street. Ralts sat neatly on his shoulder, while Ozone and Shade chased each other through the sky in a game of tag and Geico walked by his side, seeming to be looking around.

After getting the room key from the receptionist, he dropped his stuff off with Brock. While he was certainly hungry, he would much rather just pick up something from a vendor around the stadium if it means he gets an early look at the stadium. Watching his two Pokémon high in the air, a smile rested on his face. The next league he goes too, he'll be one of the competing trainers and along with his friends here... he'll take it all by storm.

A Swablu of all Pokémon ended up bursting through his pure ghost type, completely harmless... but crashed face first into Ozone, causing them both to tumble down to the ground. Running forward, he kneeled beside his first caught Pokémon, picking her up in his arms.

"You alright Ozone?"

"Cast..." she muttered. Shaking her body, she floated up out of his grip. Standing up, he realised they were pretty much eye level with Shade appeared beside her. Giving a small nod caused the smile to return to his face.

"Well, I think that's a sign that we you'll need to hold off on your game for now," he replied, glancing around, "it is pretty crowded now so don't want to cause a hassle for anyone or get into any trouble."

The two Pokémon nodded in agreement. Unable to stop his smile widening at their agreement, he glanced down to the small blue-cotton-winged bird who sat on the floor in front of him. Looking up with a slight head tilt. Pinching his lips together, he couldn't help but wonder if he knew-

"Hey, Swablu!"

Blinking in surprise, he turned to the source of the familiar voice. Running over to them was none other than the Wally running over to him. His heart thumped harder against his chest as his cheeks heated up. Their last encounter in Lilycove replaying in his head.

"-I'm so sorry for Swablu he-" The boy stopped in place, panting slightly. His eyes locked forward and he couldn't tear his own eyes away either. "-Max? I-it's nice to see you again. How have you been?"

"Good." He swallowed hard, rolling his lips into his mouth. Gently licking them due to sudden dryness. "A-and you?"

"I'm good," he nodded, "my uncle has actually been taking me more places to catch some more Pokémon."

"I'm guessing Swablu is one of them?" he asked.

"Yeah," he smiled, "but instead of just telling you, how about I show you. Come on out and say hi, everyone."

In a flash of light, several more Pokémon materialised. His Ralts popped in from a teleport but joining Swablu was a Skitty, who unlike his sisters, sat nicely on the floor with an adorable smile, the tail waving back and forth in a hypnotising manner. An Azurill sat next to them but quickly burst out in tears. Turning around, the small Pokémon jumped up into Wally's arms, nuzzling against his chest.

With a fifth Pokémon he didn't quite reconsign. It was a bipedal, rosebud-like Pokémon, barely standing above his ankle. The face was yellow with small, slit-like eyes. It seemed to be wearing a green bib of petals from a clover which dangled under the rounded yellow chin, being a darker shade of green than the rest of the body. Standing up on triangular, stubby yellow feet. The two vines on top of the head opened up, revealing a big spot on each. One side had a blue spot, while the other had a red one. Pulling out his Pokédex, he scanned the new species:

Budew, The Bud Pokémon. The baby stage of Roserade. When the sun's light strengthens, the bud atop this Pokémon's head opens. In olden times, this would be a sign to the people that the harsh winter is over, and the season of budding has begun

Putting the device away, he mentally shrugged. It certainly made sense that would be a pre-evolution of Roselia given the appearance but then again, he also wouldn't be surprised to be told it'll was a pre-evolution for a number of other grass types.

"These all look great, Wally," he smiled, "where did you get 'em all?"

"Obviously, you already know about Ralts," he replied, "but Swablu was a visitor to the flying-type feeder in my uncle's garden, so I just asked, and he joined up. Skitty's the oldest child of my dad's main partner Pokémon and he sent him as an early birthday gift. Azurill hatched from an egg we picked up from the day care between Verdanturf and Mauville and Budew... we met on the journey back from Lilycove. So, what about your team?"

"Well you met Geico, Ozone and Shade last time," he explained, gesturing to the three. The two floating Pokémon each gave a small nod, while Treecko gave a simple wave of his hand. "So the only one you haven't met yet would be Ralts but I guess you already know the species, at least."

"Yeah," he nodded, "so where are you heading?"

"To check out the stadium," he explained, "what about you?"

"Well, we got tickets to watch the whole league so we were just exploring before the opening ceremony tonight," he replied, "maybe we could join you guys and visit the stadium... I mean if it's alright with you?"

"Of course." He offered a toothy grin.

With most of their Pokémon joining off in pairs, the two boys walked side by side. Glancing at the green haired boy, he glanced down to his hand, tightening his own into a fist. Chewing on his inner cheek, their last encounter ran through his head. He tried to voice the question which had been plaguing his mind since that day but to no-avail. Entering the ancient building, they noticed far less people around on the inside.

Walking through the building, he tried to take in the sight but couldn't... his eyes kept glancing back to the boy he was pretty much alone with. He could only remember feeling like this once before but there was one major difference. Last time he felt like this, it was around Serena and Brock helped him understand.

"Max-"

Swallowing hard at the sound of his name, he turned to see the boy stood somewhat close. Their Pokémon seemed scattered around, minding their own business and no other humans were in sight. His eyes tried to dart around for some help but none arrived.

"Yeah?"

"I wanted to talk... about Lilycove," he muttered, "and... the last time we met."

"Wh-what about it?" he stuttered.

"Well... what did you think about... ya know." His foot swirled around. "The kiss?"

"I... don't know," he sighed, slumping down onto the floor. Hiding his head into his knees, "why did you do it?"

"Well... after the week we spent together, I felt like it was... right," he replied, "and I guess... the signals you were giving off really helped give me courage."

"Signals?" He blinked, looking up as the boy took a seat on the floor next to him. His mouth dropped, bottom lip trembling as he lightly took his hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze.

"I've known for a while that I... like guys," he admitted, "but the way you was acting... it reminded me of the time when I first came to that conclusion."

"You think I-I'm... that I like guys?" he asked, with a voice crack. A familiar tingle in his cheeks.

"Don't you?" he asked.

"I don't know," he whispered, burying his head back into his knees. Feeling his thumb run over the back of his hand, he felt a slight wash of relief wash over his racing heart. With an audible swallow, he slightly tilted his head to the side, "I-I thought I was straight... I mean, I had crushes on girls before a-and-"

"Why can't you like both?"

While his question was simple, it flooded his head with a million different questions. Looking up from his knees, he blinked and stared at the boy by his side, with his mouth hung open. His voice tried to start asking the questions in his head, but they rushed by so quick, no words could actually form.

"I was about your age when I realised it. I'd find my eye wandering over to guys rather than girls but because of my illness, I didn't really focus on it. When I went for a check-up, I was alone with the doctor for a brief moment and I asked him what I was experiencing. He put the idea in my head but I found it difficult to accept at first but the more I thought it over, the more I realised it's who I am. I can't change that and... I wouldn't want too."

"But I don't think it applies to me." he finally found his voice. "I mean... I am attracted to girls. I-I've had crushes a-and-"

"That maybe the case but your also lying to yourself if you claim not to be interested in boys too," he replied.

"How can you know?" He asked.

"Because if there wasn't a hint of truth in it..." He paused. "Then you wouldn't be so confused and conflicted about it."

"Why are you doing this?" he asked.

"When I needed help, that doctor was there for me and without him... I don't know if I would've found my answers even by now," he explained, "and also, when someone else discovers who they are and tells the world... the world becomes that little bit more of an interesting and colourful place."

He stayed still for a little bit longer, letting the thoughts run through his head. His parents never held any strong resentment towards same-gender-couples or taught either himself or May that anything was wrong. He also couldn't deny that his feelings around the light-green haired boy was similar, if not exact the same to how he felt around Serena way back. Everything Wally said was true and he couldn't deny it... but does that mean he has his answer?

Taking his leave, the boy stood up and parted with his selection of Pokémon. His own Pokémon all moving around him. Shade and Ozone each took up one shoulder, hovering just above, whilst Ralts rested on his head. Geico sat by his side, holding his hand in a supportive manner.

More and more people entered the stadium, and he realised that the opening ceremony was about to start. Standing up, he took a handkerchief from his normal type and cleaned himself up a bit. Returning most of his Pokémon, he carried Ralts in his arms as he set out into the crowd. Hoping to find his friends so they could watch the opening ceremony together... as he walked along, one more thought occurred to him.

How would they each react to this new side of him? Even he couldn't be sure yet if it were true or not.

May smiled as she stepped out of one of the many stores Ever-Grande-City had to offer. Two bags were in her hands with Mightyena by her side, carrying a third in his mouth. She couldn't wait to show her team the stuff she's picked up. Aiming to get a present for each of them although she still had a couple more to pick up. Not like she was struggling for options, she wouldn't be surprised if she could find something for everyone of Ash's and Serena's Pokémon here.

Continuing on her search, a small vendor store caught her attention. It had numerous perfume and fragrances filling the shelves.

"Can I help you?" an elderly women asked from the other side of the desk.

"I'm just looking, thanks," she muttered, scanning the different bottles. None of these seemed to be the big-branded names she was familiar with but that didn't really mean anything. Chewing away on her inner cheek, she got about halfway through the female section before one caught her eye. "Sea incense?"

"Would you like to try it, dear?" the women asked, picking the bottle of the shelf.

"Sure," she muttered.

Watching as the women took the lid off and dipped a fragrance stick into it. Pulling it out, she handed her the wooden stick and she held it up to her nose, taking in the centre of the fresh-ocean breeze. She blinked and felt her eyes sting with tears. The image of Manaphy disappearing upon the water's horizon filled her mind. Squeezing them shut, her trembling hand dropped the stick onto the

"Are you alright?" the women asked.

"Y-yeah," she uttered, drying her eyes, "it just... the smell reminded me off-"

"You'd be surprised how many times I've heard certain fragrances bringing back memories," she smiled. Picking up a small bottle of the fragrance, she held it out in her hand, "here you go, little lady. Have it on the house."

"Are you sure?" she asked.

"Course." She smiled. "I'm the owner and if at my age I can't give a young girl a small gift then somethings wrong."

"Thank you." She gave a small bow before walking away. Swirling the bottle through her fingers before slipping it into her waist bag.

Setting off through the mall, she glanced to the side and grinned at the dark type. His wide grin was slightly restricted by the bag, but his wagging tail made his clear excitement undeniable. Out of all her team... he's probably the one she is closest with, being able to just be friends.

Making her way outside of the main shopping centre, she felt the bright sun beat down over them. Her stomach growled in hunger as the different scent of vendors filled her nostrils. Remembering the noodle bar, they were meant to visit, she started to venture down the path but stopped at a small park area.

Standing on the edge of the grass patch, she watched her childhood friend performing several speedy push ups. Opposite him was a boy around their age, give or take, who had long orange hair with a ponyta-tail bun in the back and was dressed in a bright orange traditional kimono robe.

"Hey!" She called out, walking over to them. Brendan seemed to stop to look up to her before collapsing onto his stomach.

"Ha! That means I win again!" The kid declared as he jumped up to his feet. She couldn't help but pinch her lips together in curiosity. "Oh sorry. The names Morrison." He held his hand out and she gladly returned the handshake. "Anyway, I'll catch ya later Brendan! If you can keep up!"

She blinking in disbelief as the boy took off with admittedly impressive speed. Turning back to her childhood friend, she offered a hand and pulled him up.

"So, Brendan..." She spoke softly, her eyes darting around his features as their hands separated. "It's been a while... since the grand festival, I mean."

"Yeah, I guess it has," he uttered, watching his foot as it swirled on the ground.

An awkward silence surrounded them as the memory of their last interaction ran through her mind. Her heart beat harder, as the image of a bloody-nosed Drew ran past her. They stood outside under the night sky on the beach before he took off. Every fibre of her body telling her to-

"Look. I've got something-"

Both of them paused, realising they said the same thing at the same time. The awkward-ness returned and it didn't help with Mightyena stood behind the boy giving her a smirk with a mischievous glint in his eye. Shaking her head, she took a deep breath.

"Brendan, I've really got something I need to tell you." She stated, causing him to look into her eye. His nose wrinkled and brows pulled together as his head tilted slightly to the side. Visibly swallowing hard but not saying anything. "I should've said it back at the grand festival... actually."

"I've also got something to say which-"

"Please, I just need to do this first." She cut him off. Taking a deep breath, she made sure their eyes were locked. "I know we've been on ups and downs, but I think I'm ready. I think I've known since you helped with Huntail's evolution but..." Her voice trailed off as the words lost her. Not sure how to say what she wanted, she threw herself forward and embraced him in a tight hug. "I-I'm ready to start a relationship with you-"

"...May." His whispered after a long sigh but... it didn't sound like relief, more like when one of her parents sat her down to 'talk' about something serious.

"What's wrong?" she asked, pulling back from the embrace. He forced his lips up into a sad smile as they stared right into her's.

"I'm sorry." He shook his head. Running his hand down his face, he turned to the side. "But I can't date you."

"Wha-why?!" She cried, louder than she would've liked. "Why not?! It's what you've wanted since-Is there someone else or-?"

"What?! No!" He firmed stated to turn back to her. His eyes were wide, and lips held tightly together. Taking a deep breath, he placed a hand on her shoulder as his pupils seemed to dart around. "There isn't anyone else but..." His voice was much quieter. "For the longest time, I wanted nothing else then to have you accept me."

"So, what's the matter?" she asked, her voice little more than a whimper. Her eyes stung with tears.

"I have just a little too much self-respect to be your rebound guy after Drew." He sighed. "After Rustboro, I promised myself I wouldn't spend another moment pining for someone who clearly doesn't want me. I thought we could be friends and just move on but... that's clearly not possible."

"You're not a rebound or-"

"Don't insult me, May, please." He sighed, turning to the side with a downward turned head. "You just said you knew since I helped with Huntail. That was barely a week after you and Drew broke up. You don't want to date me for me... you just want a boyfriend for the status and no relationship would survive off that bases. I would rather be single then let myself be used like that. Sorry but... I gotta go."

She watched her childhood friend take off and disappear amongst the cries. Her vision became even more blurred as her only current option at a relationship disappeared from sight. Feeling a slight nudge in her side, she dried her eyes and turned to see Mightyena there with his own wobbling moist eyes.

"I-I'll be okay," she muttered with heavy sigh. "We should get to the stadium. It'll be the opening ceremony soon."

Turning around, she took off in a slow walk towards the stadium. Her heart felt stretched in her chest as she rubbed her eyes.

Serena smiled at her friends as she sat down next to May, with Max and Brock further along the row. She glanced down to the floor and noticed some workers moving around but nothing seemed to be happening with the light clatter of footsteps and chatter echoing around them. Relaxing back into her seat, she glanced to the side and found her two travelling companions. May had a bag of Swablu-cotton-candy, munching away as Max sat rigid. His body seemed stiff at the joints as his head was directed down into his lap. She briefly frowned, expecting him to be the most enthusiastic about being here.

"So how did you guys find your first league experience?" she asked.

"Huh?" Max blinked, glancing up.

"This is actually pretty cool," May shrugged, "while I'd never watch from home unless a friend is competing, actually being here and getting the atmosphere... it's surreal. Sort of like the grand festival but different."

"It could feel different since you're not the one competing." She noted, to which the brunette nodded. "So, what about you, Max?"

"I erm-"

"Sorry for the wait folks but now it's our honour to introduce our final one-hundred-and-twenty-eight trainer's who'll be battling it out in our emerald conference to be crowned this year's Hoenn league champion!" The announcer explained as rows of trainers walked out onto the field below. "Each has collected eight gym badges from around our region in hopes of being the very best like no-one ever was! Now it's my great honour to introduce our pristine champion and elite four to officially kick off this year's tournament! Please put your hands together for Steven Stone, Drake Arias, Glacia Purim, Phoebe Fuyou and Sidney Kagetsu!"

A spotlight appeared on the stadium in front of the rows of trainers. One by one each member walked out in the formal outfits which they came to meet the individual members in. Steven had his Metagross by his side and stood front of the stage while Drake had his Sceptile, Phoebe had Sableye and Sidney had his Absol. Her eyes drifted over to the final member who she hadn't previously encountered, who had a Glalie floating by her head. An elderly women dressed in a large, old-fashioned light purple dress with pale blonde hair.

"It is my honour to once again welcome each and every one of you to our Ever-Grand stadium and congratulate you on making it this far." Steven announced. "As per tradition, which ever trainer in front of me ends up winning the emerald conference will have the chance to challenge myself and my elite four in a series of battles but it's with this news that I need to take a moment. As I'm sure most of you have heard, one of our elite four are retiring after this conference. It's with a heavy heart I must confirm that Glacia shall step down so I'll invite her here to give some words of her own."

Watching closely as he traded spots with the elderly woman, she couldn't help but notice how the crowd turned silent. An ice chill shivered down her spine.

"Greetings ladies, gentlemen, children and Pokémon of all species. I'm not going to keep you long, I just wish to express my gratitude to each member of our champions league. I can remember when each of them joined and it has been a pleasure getting to my replacement work to achieve a position in this elite four. It has been the greatest honour I could have asked for and I'm sure those who remain shall do our region justice! So from myself, I must say farewell and thank you."

She could've sworn she heard a pin drop as the ice type specialist switched places with Steven. Golduck-bumps trailed her arms as she felt the bitter cold consume the stadium. It was like being a child in front of the head teacher of the school with how she controlled the crowd.

"I'm sure I speak for the whole of Hoenn when I say you'll be missed." Steven continued. "While we do have her replacement ready to join our team, their official induction shall wait until after this year's festivities and as per tradition, being her last league in the role means whichever promising trainer ends up winning shall face her first in the champions league challenge! But now it's my great honour to welcome this year's torch runner, Tyson Tetsuya and his partner Meowth!"

The crowd cheered as a man came running in. He had a head of curly brown hair and a traditional athlete's outfit on. A small wooden torch with a flame flickering on top was in his hand. By his side was a Meowth but they were running on hind legs and was dressed like an old western Miltank-boy from ole Orre.

Running through the competing trainer's and past the elite four. They ran to the top of the stairs and lowered the torch into the metal dish atop the stadium. A large fire erupted with the crowd matching the roar. The runner and his Meowth walked back down and joined the other competing trainer's.

"With the torch lit, I can officially kick off the tournament!" Steven announced as thunderous applause rumbled the stadium. "If you look around the screens on the stands, you'll see our first-round match ups! These battles shall take place on one of the four fields surrounding this arena and shall be double battles! Each pairing has a time slot and need to register their two Pokémon at least an hour before!"

Her head locked straight onto the main screen. Scanning the match ups she noticed the first battle being none other than the torch runner Tyson and he was matched up against Katie. Continuing to glance around the screens she finally found Ash's match. Being in the early afternoon at half-two on the third stadium against a boy named Dominick. The lights on the ground drew her attention back down to the field as the trainers moved back and the elite four exited.

"And now to truly open this year's emerald conference we welcome Hoenn's first sitting showcase queen," Steven announced, "Lisia Lutia!"

A single spot-light appeared on stage, revealing a Roserade with her bouquets together and head down. The music started with a slow piano beat and the grass poison type raised her head. Kicking one leg out, it rotated around in time with the beat. Entering her into a spin as she moved to the left of the stage.

Raising her bouquet hands in time with the beat, a drum percussion was added into the tune. She continued to dance around the stage in time.

'All the life she has seen, All the meaner side of me, They took away the prophet's dream for a profit on the street'

Turning back, she continued to swirl around the other side of the stage. White balls of solar energy trickling out of her bouquet hands to illuminate the stage.

'Now she's stronger than you know, A heart of steel starts to grow'

Roots erupted out of the ground, allowing her to continue the minimalist dance along them. Several spotlights shimmering around the grassy display.

'All his life he's been told, He'll be nothing when he's old, All the kicks and all the blows, He won't ever let it show'

Riding along the vine, she ended up in a sort of thorny forest of her own creation. The solar balls sparkling like mini candles in the dark stage.

'Cause he's stronger than you know, A heart of steel starts to grow'

With a large jump off the vein, she landed front-centre stage on one knee. Purple stingers shot out of her in all directions, hitting the solar balls. Each exploded like a mini fire work, dazzling the forest display around them.

'When you've been fighting for all your life, You've been struggling to make things right, That's how a superhero learns to fly'

A spot light turned to the ceiling and Altaria came soaring in from the side. Spinning over the display, Lisia divided down and landed on the vine.

(Every day, Every hour, Turn the pain into power)

Performing a frontal roll, she landed to the side of her grass poison type. Both on one knee, syncing up their movements as she joined in the minimum dance.

'When you've been fighting for all your life, You've been working every day and night, That's how a superhero learns to fly'

The main attention was drawn up to Altaria, who spun upwards to the ceiling. A bright pink moonblast leading her path.

(Every day, Every hour, Turn the pain into power)

Smashing her beak into the move at the apex, it exploded in a dazzling display. Her wings spread out and glistened under the added sprinkles.

'All the hurt all the lies, All the tears that they cry, When the moment is just right, You see fire in their eyes'

Taking off from her display, she released a thin mist in her trail. Spinning around as if dancing in the air, several cotton balls shot out of her feathers.

'Cause he's stronger than you know, A heart of steel starts to grow'

She landed right behind the two dancers as the music picked back up. All three synced up there movements with her wings acting as Lisia's and Roserade's arms.

'When you've been fighting for all your life, You've been struggling to make things right, That's how a superhero learns to fly'

All three spun but Lisia ended up centre stage as either Pokémon went opposite sides. Roserade launched an energy ball and Altaria a moon blast. The different attacks shot past Lisia and funnelled up in their own synced dance.

(Every day, Every hour, Turn the pain into power)

Ice balls shot up and struck the projectiles. Colliding together they all exploded into firework like sparkles. Her dragon flying type started a slow ascension, leaving steps of cotton around the plant display.

'When you've been fighting for all your life, You've been working every day and night, That's how a superhero learns to fly'

Lisia took off and lept up the cotton stairs as Roserade took centre stage on top of her thorny vines. Reaching Froslass, they held each other's hands.

(Every day, Every hour, Turn the pain into power)

Spinning around like how you'd see children play on a playground, they raised up through the air. Snowflake and ice shards blowing off as Altaria let out a loud cry above them. Fairy type energy erupted from her and drizzle a pink tint over the stage.

(Instrumental) - (Every day, Every hour, Turn the pain into power, Every day, Every hour, Turn the pain into power)

Spinning overhead, her humming Pokémon launched a dragon pulse straight up. Splitting open at the apex, rotating streams of blue flames rained down.

'She's got Pyroar's in her heart, A fire in her soul, He's got a beast in his belly, That's so hard to control'

A shimmering ice shape formed within the dispersed dragon pulse. Streams of poisonous purple liquid shot up to counter the move from Altaria.

Cause they've taken too much hits, Taking blow after blow, Now light a match, stand back, watch 'em explode'

The multicolours created a sort of rainbow effect with the prism in the centre. A darker purple of ghost type energy radiated from Lisia and Froslass.

'She's got Pyroar's in her heart, A fire in her soul, He's got a beast in his belly, That's so hard to control'

Lowering down to the stage, the Hoenn queen landed on the vines with Roserade. Spinning out of her Froslass' embrace, she took on Roserade as her new dance partner. Raising back up as the multicoloured background slowly fell to the floor, both airborne Pokémon entered an aerial dance.

'Cause they've taken too much hits, Taking blow after blow, Now light a match, stand back, watch 'em explode'

Lisia cupped her hands together and used them as a lift. Giving Roserade a boost to fly over her head, spinning with pink petals floating through her twirl.

'When you've been fighting for all your life, You've been struggling to make things right, That's how a superhero learns to fly (Every day, Every hour, Turn the pain into power)'

She rolled forward and ended the move with a pointed leg spinning around. Ending facing her grass poison type as they faced off against each other.

'When you've been fighting for all your life, You've been working every day and night, That's how a superhero learns to fly (Every day, Every hour, Turn the pain into power)'

The two charged towards each other and she lept overhead and Roserade rolled underneath. Stopping closer together, the two continued their dance.

(Instrumental) - (Every day, Every hour, Turn the pain into power, Every day, Every hour, Turn the pain into power)

Ice began consuming the vine display and the colours mostly dissolved into a snow-white background. Sliding down the icy ramp, the two airborne Pokémon floated down with them. The enter frozen vine display erupted into thousands of sparkling ice shards which drizzled over the four performers.

'When you've been fighting for all your life, You've been struggling to make things right, That's how a superhero learns to fly'

She struggled to breath as her eyes shimmered at the display. Her bottom lip trembled as her hearing was threatened by the loud cheering crowd. Feeling her own hand shake, she tightly held it as everything seemed to disappear from around them.

Closing her eyes, she relaxed her body and let out a low sigh. A single tear trickled down her cheek as she raised her hands to join in the applause.
