"Hey kiddo, how're things at Neds?" May asked once Peter had accepted her call. She needed to tell Peter about what she had done but she didn't want to stress him out until she had a better plan so for now she'll avoid the subject as best she can. Peter would freak out if he knew she'd lost her temper and punched someone.
"It's okay." Peter answered, a clear shrug in his tone. "I accidentally knocked the Death Star over coming in from patrol though. Ned said it was fine but I still think he's upset. It's really sad because we can't find the instruction packet for it."
"I'm not upset, we can build it without the instructions." May could hear Ned in the background. She couldn't help but laugh. One thing Peter and Ned never saw eye to eye on - 'should we use the instruction manual?'
"There's over four thousand pieces to this thing Ned, there's no way we're doing it without the manual." Peter argued. "Um, anyways, how's London-or.. You're not actually in London are you?"
"Not at the moment." May answered. "I just wanted to call to check in, make sure you aren't in any trouble." she offered. Peter paused and May hoped she wasn't too transparent.
"You're not trying to rush me off the phone, are you?" Peter chanced asking.
"Peter-" May started.
"You're not like… hiding something?" He asked and May was tempted to come clean but until she had a more solidified plan she didn't need to drag Peter into her worry spiral. He'd worry twice as hard and she didn't want to ruin his time with Ned.
"Of course not." She found herself lying. "But I do only have so many minutes of international talk time." She reminds him gently, trying to ignore the guilt that came from lying to her nephew.
"Oh! Right. Sorry. Good night Aunt May." Peter clicked off the call and May was left to ponder what she'd just done. She could make it up to him later, apologize and explain everything. She sucks in a breath through her nose and stores her phone away before ducking back into the hotel room.
When she came back in, she noticed Harry had crawled up to the head of the bed and was curled tightly in on himself. There was a movie showing on the tv but he didn't seem to be paying too close attention though and she sat gently on the other side of the bed to give him space. As much as she wanted to just hug him tightly and hold him close she knew she couldn't. There was already a lot for Harry to process and she didn't want to overwhelm him any more than he already was.
"Harry." She said gently. He didn't respond and May's heart broke a little more. What had this poor kid been through that he's so… pensive. It reminded her of Peter after Richard and Mary had first passed. He didn't want to talk to anyone and he'd sit for hours just curled up on the couch or in his bed and not say a word. "Harry." She tried again, a little louder.
"Hm?" She finally got his concentration to break and he looked up at her. "Sorry, I was just thinking." He told her.
"You don't need to apologize." May assured him. "My other nephew is also really insistent on apologizing about everything. He doesn't need any competition." She said lightly.
"Oh.. So-" Harry paused, realized the word about to come out of his mouth and swallowed it down. "Er.. you said your other nephew?" He prompted.
"Mmhm." May nodded, a small, proud smile on her face as she thinks about her ridiculous teenager. "Peter. He's staying with his friend while I'm out. He'll tell you otherwise but fifteen is still a little young to be left on your own for a few days."
"Oh.. er… that's not what I-you said ' other' nephew." Harry reminded her. "But I'm not-" Then it clicked what he was asking and May felt her heart breaking all over again. This was a delicate and sensitive issue and one she was very familiar with.
"Maybe we're not related by blood." May started. "However, blood has very little to do with family anyway. Peter's dad was my husband's brother. I'm only his Aunt by marriage but he's still my kid and I still want what's best for him. We may not be related by blood, Harry, but you're my cousin's nephew which makes you my nephew by extension."
"Oh." Was all she got in response. A moment passed and then Harry nodded, seeming to think about it. May wanted to be able to just let him sit and process things and take as long as he needed but tomorrow was going to be extremely busy and Tony said he'd be there in a few hours. Which was about three hours ago.
"I know it's a lot to take in." She said gently, "but we do need to go to sleep." She prompts. Harry just nodded again. "Good night, sleep well." He just nodded again.
oooOOOooo
Harry wouldn't admit it out loud but it was kind of nice to fall asleep on a queen sized bed with an adult beside him to look after him. He realized he doesn't have any memory of this kind of protection and he does his best not to feel too emotional over it.
The last thing Mrs Parker needed was for him to start crying over things he never had. He'd fallen asleep rather quickly for him which was new. The only times he managed that were at Ron's over last summer and at Hogwarts. Hogwarts remained a constant worry as he still had no idea how to get back or if he should tell Mrs Parker about his magical heritage but another part of him was scared she'd reject his magic just as the Dursley's did. She was Vernon's cousin and that meant she probably hated magic too. Having a magic kid would probably complicate things with that other nephew and her.
What was her nephew like? Apparently, extremely apologetic but that's all he really knew. Would he be another Dudley or were the Parkers really as nice as they seemed to be? With the Dursleys it was all about appearing nice and being seen as likable. He didn't really get that impression from May. She did punch Aunt Marge after all. She also didn't ooze wealth and greed.
He laid there contemplating the new unknowns and froze as he heard something going on outside.
"Pepper wanted me to tell you she thinks this is a bad idea, for the record." He overheard a man's voice just outside.
"Noted." He could barely hear Mrs Parker's voice and then heard the sound of a key turning in a lock. "Now shh, he's still asleep." The motel room's door opened and Harry fought the urge to open his eyes, preferring to just pretend to be asleep a little longer. He was glad she was back before he'd really had time notice she was gone. Not that he would have thought she'd just leave him at the hotel but he also didn't think he'd have been surprised if she did.
"Well you're gonna have to wake him up, we got places to be, laws to break-you stayed the night here?" Harry heard the man's attention take a hard right turn. He heard the door shut and both adults shuffled to the other side of the room.
"We can't all be billionaires, Tony." He heard Mrs Parker, her tone tight and annoyed. Tony must be the man she'd mentioned last night. Who was he? The Dursleys had even backed off from her when she said she knew him. The name sounded familiar though. Like something he should recognize but had forgotten about.
"Okay. But you could have called me." Tony was saying, he had a very self-important tone. Harry noted that he had lowered his voice though.
"I did call you." Mrs Parker hissed quietly. "But I don't need you to pay my hotel bills."
"Alright. I've clearly offended you so I'm gonna back off." Tony backed off.
"You can't just throw money at every problem." Mrs Parker chided, almost like she were telling off a child.
"Actually, I've found you can solve a lot of problems by throwing money at them. And I'm sorry, didn't you call me to throw money at a problem?" Harry could swear he felt the temperature in the room suddenly drop.
"No." Mrs Parker said coldly. "I called because I need your help getting a child out of an abusive situation." Abusive? Harry frowned beneath his covers. He knew that the Dursleys weren't exactly nice to him but to go as far as abusive? Then again, they did make him live under a staircase for nearly ten years.
"You may want to watch the vocabulary. He's awake." Tony ratted him out. Was it that obvious? He heard a soft intake of breath from Mrs Parker.
"Harry? Are you awake?" Figuring that it was pointless to pretend anymore, he pushed the blanket off and sat up in bed.
"I'm sorry Mrs Parker, I didn't mean to listen in." He stated. Mr Parker didn't look too upset and he finally got a glance at her friend. He wasn't too tall but there was a presence about him that commanded respect. He was wearing a nice suit with a regular t-shirt under the suit jacket. He was also wearing a pair of sunglasses despite the fact they were inside. Everything about him was crisp and clean. Mrs Parker was clean but there was a sharp contrast in how the two dressed.
"It's alright." Mrs Parker assured him. "I'm not mad. I'd want to know what was going on too." Harry offered her a small, uncertain smile, still having difficulty wrapping his head around the fact this woman was Uncle Vernon's Cousin. She was really, definitely sure that she was related to the Dursleys?
"I also want to know what's going on." Her friend stated in his self-important like tone. Mrs Parker rolled her eyes at him. "I kinda need to know what's going on since I'm the one with the jet." He pointed out. Harry nearly did a double take. Did he say he owned a Jet? If this man was that rich, no wonder the Dursleys had recognized him. They loved keeping up with the richest people around.
"Tony, this is Harry." May introduced him to the man.
"Tony Stark." He offered flippantly, as though he expected Harry to recognize it.
"I'm Harry Potter." He introduced himself. Tony watched him for a long moment, he seemed to be calculating something but lost the train of thought when the silence was interrupted.
"I want to take Harry back to Queens with me." Mrs Parker stated firmly, daring Tony to question her. Should he speak up about his school now or just let her take him to New York? Would it really be that bad? Things like Floo Powder existed so maybe there was a work around so he could still go to Hogwarts.
"Yeah, I know that's what you want to do." Tony told her and then turned eyes on Harry. Harry didn't know why but he got the feeling he should say or do something rather than let the man stare him down. "And what do you want, kid?"
Okay, he sort of hadn't expected that. He was being given a choice? However, if the options were to move to New York or go back to the Dursleys it still wasn't really much of a choice. "I-I don't want to go back to the Dursleys." He voiced.
"Okay." Tony nodded, something final in his tone. "That's all I needed." He started to head out.
"But I do want to go back to my school. In September." Harry finally got out. Mrs Parker and Tony paused and looked at each other. "It's.. a sort of boarding in school. In Scotland."
"In Scotland?" Tony repeated. Harry nodded. "Okay, that complicates things." He turned to Mrs Parker, who looked a little sad and really tired. They weren't going to let him go, were they? Maybe he could get them to take him to stay with someone else for a bit and he wouldn't have to move to the US.
"It's sort of really important that I go to that school." Harry pressed. Tony let out a sigh and turned back to him.
"Give me… about five minutes with Aunt May." He told the boy before he gestured for Mrs Parker to follow him. Mrs Parker got up from where she'd been sitting and followed the man outside. Harry was sorely tempted to try and listen but the conversation was far too muffled for him to make anything out.
oooOOOooo
Tony led May out of the room and tried not to think too hard about what a mess this was going to end up being. A short look at the kid had told him all he needed to know about his homelife. The kid needed a better family but moving a kid from London to New York was a big ask, even for him. He could probably pull something together but before he did he needed to know that May could even reasonably take in another child.
He was far from naïve, Tony was well aware of May's financial situation and neither of the Parkers would ever accept a loan from him. If May Parker was asking him, of all people, for a favor it was highly likely she saw it as an emergency circumstance.
"So…" Tony started once he was sure the kid couldn't eavesdrop. Or at least, he was reasonably certain. Maybe May ended up somehow adopting yet another kid with super hearing. "Hear me out here, I think we should let him go to the boarding school-if he really wants to go."
"Tony, I can't afford-" May started, just as he'd predicted she would.
"Ah-ah." Tony cut her off, earning a death glare for his troubles. He managed to let it roll off his back. "Hear me out. I can easily afford to send him to his boarding school."
May bit her bottom lip still glaring, but this time waiting to hear his logic in this.
"He goes for one more year-that gives him closure. And you get a whole extra year to figure out how you're gonna take care of two teenagers. One of which, I'm sure you're aware, has a very enhanced metabolism." Tony reminded her. May sucked in a breath, honestly considering his proposal.
"I-I don't know…" May faltered. He moved to gently rest a hand on her shoulder to hopefully push her in the direction of his plan.
"You called me for help. And if this is what you want? I'm all in, but you have to be sure and you have to let me help." He prompted. May frowned and finally let out a sigh.
"I'm sure." She finally stated. That part, Tony's sure, was never really in question. It was more the letting him help thing.
"Good." Tony nodded. "Then we're a team on this. Which means my resources are your resources." A pause. "At least until we get everything sorted." He amended before she could object.
"Okay." She finally caved. "Okay, we'll do it your way." Tony smiled and let her shoulder go, satisfied with that answer. Nice to know he could still negotiate anything with anyone.
"Okay." He nodded. "Let's get you two back to the states and get everything sorted." He gestured back to the room. He could already tell this would be a long day. May moved back towards the room and Tony told FRIDAY to go ahead and start drafting the papers together to, at the very least, get May temporary guardianship of the kid for now.
He paused just as he was about to follow her through the door when FRIDAY offered him an alarming bit of information.
"I'm sorry sir, but records for a Harry Potter, ward of Vernon Dursley stop very suddenly just after the boy turned eleven." She informed him. Interesting.
"So there's nothing about a boarding school in Scotland?" He prompted.
"Not that I'm able to locate, sir." The AI confirmed. Well this just got weird. He made his way into the hotel room again and May was packing up her things, Harry having decided to follow suit.
"So good news. May and I are gonna make sure you get to go to your boarding school. But I need to know the name of it so I can one, get any records I need to make a legitimate case for May taking over guardianship, and two, so I can take over making payments for the semester."
"Oh." Harry seemed to freeze. His bright green eyes flickered to May before going back to Tony. "Well… I don't-it's not really a traditional school…" He trailed off as obvious nerves started to set in. "it's er.. My parents both went there and It's-Er I'm not exactly sure if I'm allowed to say but I-I'm actually… actually-" His gaze moved back to May again.
"Are you enhanced?" Tony ripped the bandaid off. Although, he's not aware of any boarding schools tucked away in Scotland made specifically for the enhanced.
"Enhanced?" Harry frowned, looking back at him. "I don't think so?"
"You have special abilities." May explained. She seemed a shade paler but she was keeping her panic pretty well hidden.
"Super-strength?" Tony asked.
"No? I-I mean I know a-"
"Super speed?"
"No. Although, I'd be surprised if there wasn't-"
"Teleportation?"
"It's called Apparating." Harry stated. "And no, you have to be seventeen to apparate."
"Okay, I've missed something here. If you're not enhanced, what do you call it?" Tony pressed. May shot him glare for his bluntness but he ignored it.
"I'm…" Harry holds his breath a moment before opting to just blurt it out. "I'm a wizard." Okay, that really wasn't what Tony was expecting. A wizard? Those exist? About six or seven years ago he probably wouldn't even consider it but now he's a little more open-minded. Meeting Wanda Maximoff will do that to a person.
"Oh great." May accidentally broke the silence. Tony knew exactly what she was thinking, a superhero and now a wizard? That's some luck the Parkers had. Harry turned to her again, watching her carefully.
"That doesn't.. Er… doesn't change anything, does it?" He asked the woman. May looked shocked and moved over to grip the boy gently by the shoulders. Neither she nor Tony missed how Harry winced at the contact.
"No, sweetheart. Of course it doesn't." She assured him. Tony was getting the feeling this wasn't an 'of course' situation for the kid.
"She's just a little shocked because her other kid just so happens to be enhanced."
