Sonic stepped down the stone stairs. Was it odd that he was moving slow? Yes, but Sonic actually found himself enamored with the scenery. He'd love to live down here. It was quiet, and thanks to Eggman, there were TVs. Sonic was sure Tails could probably hook something up to get them service out here.
Tails… Sonic felt bad he was going to have to wait even longer. Still, Sonic was hopeful that a single day wouldn't hurt Tails seriously.
The grey stone arena seemed to be for a…very serious sport. Pictures of Mobians cutting off the heads of dragons were carved into the round walls. They got…graphic, at least for stone carvings.
Kit stuck behind Sonic. The Fennec seemed to get disturbed by the depictions on the walls.
The giant mechanical owl spun its head around, 360, before screeching.
"Hohoho Sonic, I was expecting you and the freak, but… well not so soon." Eggman fumbled, "How did you even find this place?"
"Stop calling her that!" Sonic growled. Eggman wasn't exactly known for being nice, but it was really getting old.
"Sheesh, are you getting closer. That makes my life harder." Eggman grumbled.
"Fuck off." Surge groaned, "I'm done after we kick your ass."
"Oh, just like that then? Fine, SERAPHIM, GET THEM!" Eggman shouted, and Sonic got ready for the gimmic.
SERAPHIM spread its wings out and took flight, knocking Sonic and Surge against the…water wall that slowed them down.
"Thanks Kit!" Sonic called out, and the Fennec nodded, and turned to Surge. She rolled her eyes at him. Couldn't she save it for after the fight.
Sonic didn't have time to think of anything else as the owl perched up on the chandelier that stood over the area. Its glowing eyes seemed to Focus on Sonic. He didn't need to be told twice, as a sort sixth sense told him to move.
Sonic ran as the sand where he had been standing turned to glass from the laser beam. Surge caught on and tried to jump up to hit the Mechanical owl. Unfortunately, she could only jump so high.
Sonic jumped over the laser and ran back to Kit, who sat there with a curious look on his face. Sonic hoped he was coming up with a plan, because he was confused.
SERAPHIM flipped and soared over the battle field, firing rockets at the ground. The wind gust churned up sand, which covered up the glass. Sonic had to avoid rockets, before he got the idea to try and jump on them.
He jumped from rocket to rocket, climbing so close… but the rockets stopped before Sonic could even get close to jumping range. Sonic heard the sound of motor bugs getting close.
Surge snarled, and clutched her fist, gritting her teeth.
The gate opened and motor bugs poured into the arena. Sonic ran next to Surge, and made his offer.
"I'll get left, you get right." Sonic proposed to her with a grin.
"I'll get what I want." Surge growled, and rushed forward. Sonic bounced on the rows of Motorbugs, crushing them nicely. Surge's jagged movement made short work of the badniks, as she made herself known.
The gate closed, and the owl shrieked before spinning around. And jumping off of the chandelier, before flying around the room. Sonic and Surge braced as the wind threatened to take them off their feet.
Missiles came out of SERAPHIM and began to fall towards the ground, threatening to destroy the mobians who were braced.
Kit, however, was not exactly ready to let everyone die, and Sonic couldn't tell the little fennec how grateful he was when the water came up and made a shield over them.
"Good Save, Kit." Sonic called out to the Fennec. He looked at Surge, who gave him a quiet thumbs up, but didn't take the time to look at him.
The giant mechanical owl landed on the Chandelier and flopped backwards. Sonic knew what was coming, there seemed to be a predictable pattern with these new "Super" badniks.
Sonic ran around the owl as it fired its laser eyes at him. The lasers followed Sonic as he zipped around the arena. Surge ran straight at the owl while it was distracted. She jumped up and curled up to spin-dash the chest of the owl, knocking it backwards.
The owl sprang up, and soared around the room once again. This time, the claws came out, and Sonic saw it going around, but not focusing on him.
Surge shouted, "Get down here you piece of shit! I'll show you what for you no good pile of garbage!" That was actually a good insult. Sonic would have to use that one on Metal.
But Sonic saw claws coming down, "SURGE, MOVE!" He shouted.
Surge jerked around at Sonic, "SHUT THE FU-" Seraphim dove, and grabbed the tenrec in its claws, before picking her and soaring into the sky. Surge began to spark with electricity, but it wasn't enough before the owl slammed her into the ground. Sonic head the breath leave her lungs from the impact.
Kit, however, was not content to sit there and listen to the sound. His teeth were out, and his eyes glowed with a rage, "DON'T TOUCH HER!" His water tendrils shot out and at the owl, which shrieked. It's eyes glowed and fired into the water tentacles.
Sonic wasn't ready to see another fox get hurt, and so he shot forward and grabbed Kit. The beams ripped through the tentacles as Kit was pulled away, his ears straight up in an alert attack position.
Sonic set the fox down, "Kit, I need you to focus! Ok buddy, We need to stay calm!"
The Fennec snarled and threw a stone seat at the owl with another tentacle, before panting. He was exhausted from the attack. Sonic tried to stroke his head. The fennec jerked his nose up at Sonic's hand. He seemed to scan Sonic's hand as Sonic tried to move it behind his ears. Kit was not exactly cooperating, and jerked around until Sonic finally pushed his hand and gave gentle strokes.
Kit seemed to relax, with ears dropping down as Sonic continued to stroke him softly. Thankfully, he came back to the real world, but he seemed ready to go at any point.
"Listen buddy, We need to stay focused, this place isn't exactly new or strong." Sonic explained to the Fennec.
Kit looked around as Surge was all too happy to swear more at SERAPHIM. He nodded, "I understand."
"Now I just need to get a few good hits on that thing and let Rouge out." Sonic mumbled to himself.
"I'll grab it when it flies around. You and Surge tear it to pieces!" Kit quickly growled. Sonic wondered if, for all of Surge's rough personality, Kit was the one who had black-out anger.
Sonic didn't have time to argue, and he got low right as the large mechanical owl perched up on the chandelier. Sonic then realized there was one key weakness to their plan.
Sonic zipped up to Surge, who was busy letting the SERAPHIM know just what she thought of it.
"-NO GOOD PILE OF DOGSHIT THAT GOT REJECTED FROM THE FUCKING FACTORY!" Surge panted as She finally gasped for air, turning partially blue in her rant.
"Listen, that thing is going to fly around one more time. Drippy's going to-" Sonic started before surge jerked around at him.
"Don't call him that!" Surge snarled. Clearly, it was their special name. Sonic made a note not to touch it later.
"Kit is going to grab it, and we pound it." Sonic corrected.
Surge glared at him, before grinning, "Now you're speaking my language." She balled her fist and caught it in her hand.
The two ran back to Kit, and braced for the attack.
Sonic saw the Mechanical owl spring off the chandelier before spinning around. This time, however, something happened. The owl's wings began to glow, and Sonic saw the sand begin to melt into glass.
Sonic dove out of the way of the large metal wings as Surge slowly caught on. She dove as well, with kit running under the gate entrance to the arena. As the large mechanical Owl flew past the gate, watery arms shot out and wrapped around the wings and body.
Kit called out, "I GOT IT!"
Sonic and Surge sprang into action, running at the owl that was pulled down. Sonic felt some level of instinct kick in, and held out his hands. Surge caught on and jumped on them, and Sonic launched her into the air.
Surge curled into a ball and zipped into SERAPHIM's left wing, cutting it off. The giant metal owl plummeted into the sand as Surge summersaulted backwards and landed on her feet.
Sonic zipped up next to Surge, who was smiling with her hands on her hips, "Well, How about that? I think the no good fuck-toy didn't stand a chance."
Sonic smirked, "Well, I have to admit, it was pretty fun to dodge the laser eyes."
The smoke cleared, which made Sonic and Surge both put their guards up. SERAPHIM was not too happy with their little stunt on its wing. It let out a screech, before its eyes glowed. Sonic and Surge split up, only for the owl to charge at Surge. It lumbered forward, having trouble keeping stable with its missing wing.
Sonic realized that it didn't need to keep up with Surge. Its eyes were fixed as they glowed brighter. Sonic zipped over and curled into a ball, slamming into SERAPHIM, knocking it forward as it fired its laser.
The owl over corrected with a screech in the center of the arena, firing up the walls and spinning around, seeming to miss the Hedge-
"THE WALLS!" Kit called out running at Sonic as he whirled around. SERAPHIM finished its barrage by firing straight up, cutting the chandelier off by its chain. The owl probably didn't realize that it also doomed itself, as the chandelier came crashing down.
That was supposed to be the end of it. Unfortunately, the walls began to crumble, which meant the roof also began to fall. As if that wasn't enough, the chandelier's impact on Seraphin caused the owl to sink, and the floor to give way.
The Sand rolled down the stone as the floor slowly dipped down. Surge tried to run up, but the slope quickly became steep. Sonic ran down as the sand made his shoes have a hard time gripping the ground. Still, Surge was sliding, and instinctively gripping at anything that could stop her. Unfortunately, all there was to grab was sand.
Sonic slid down and grabbed Surge's hand as they slid down. The walls were falling with stones around them. Sonic looked around for anything that could- He saw glass. It seemed to be stuck to the arena flooring.
Sonic slid over, tugging Surge along as the sand began to slowly run out. She looked at him with surprise. Then again, she probably wouldn't do the same.
Sonic stretched out his free hand, and grabbed the glass. Sonic felt his hand tighten on it, before her arm jerked them to a stop as the sand rolled down. Sonic groaned with the snap, "HEAVY!"
Surge was clearly outraged, but she at least kept her charge in check, "Sheesh, look at yourself you fat piece of shit!"
Sonic groaned, and gave her a look to not test him in that moment. Sonic and Surge dangled there, with the stone floors facing straight down. Sonic really needed a plan to help keep them from falling to what ever sat at the bottom of that ravine.
Water tentacles slowly worked their way down the stone flooring. Kit was coming to get them-
Then Sonic saw it. The rock seemed to descend slow motion.
"SSSSSHHHHHIIIIITTTTTT!" Surge's voice called out as the large stone hit the flooring, pushing them down, and stagging Kit's water tentacle. Sonic and Surge plummeted with Kit down the hole. Sonic grabbed Surge and pulled her in before flipping around. Dang his stupid niceness, this was going to hurt.
Sonic felt the wind sucked out of him as he hit the flat ground with a tenrec on his chest. Surge sat up off his chest, and looked at him surprised, and a little confused.
Suddenly, a Fennec descended from above, and Sonic braced only to feel Kit land on Sonic's chest, knocking the little bit of air he had recovered out. Nope, time for a nap.
Sonic laid back and closed his eyes.
"OH NO YOU FUCKING DON'T!" Surge shouted, and he felt a pair of hands get… frisky… on him. Sonic's eyes opened ever so slightly, to see… The workshop.
Sonic felt himself lifted up as a bat descended down, "Wow, nice save blue… You working with her now?"
Sonic groaned as Surge probably said something snarky. It hurt Sonic's ribs and back to move. Something was probably broken.
He limped through as Rouge called out, "I guess I owe you three. Stop by the club sometime. The night'll be on the house, big blue." Rouge ran… or rather flew off as Sonic limped towards the door.
Sonic picked the crushed metal piece out of his ear. Tails was definitely going to chew him out for that later.
Surge zipped up the stairs, and showed an odd moment of compassion where she tossed Sonic a ring. Sonic flipped the ring. He probably needed two, but his body was at least partially healing, with his spine and ribs getting better.
Sonic limped towards his hallway with his room. Of course they would have the bed rooms upstairs. Still… Surge was there through it all. Vector and Espio were especially useful, giving Sonic shocked looks as he limped up.
Sonic felt himself laid down on the bed.
"Sheesh, I get to fucking kill you, got it?" Surge growled at Sonic.
Sonic flashed a thumbs up.
"No one else, fucking get it?" Surge repeated, glaring at Sonic.
Sonic gasped, and slumped back. That was supposed to be the end of his night, but of course, he needed an interruption.
Sonic had developed an instinct to wake up when his door creaked open. Sonic's eyes opened at the sound. He still felt like hell, but his brain said to look for danger. Sonic scanned the room as a pair of purple glowing orbs moved across the floor.
Sonic was a little unnerved, but also pretty tired to put a defense. His arms felt bruised. Definitely a two-ringer.
"S-Sonic." Kit's voice called to him.
"I'm up." Sonic groaned, looking at the Fennec, who briefly turned yellow in Sonic's vision, before turning back to blue. Sonic was losing his mind.
"Can I sleep with… can I sleep with you?" Kit asked, both nervous and ashamed. Sonic really was looking at younger Tails. Two weeks ago, this Fennec would have drowned Sonic at the first opportunity. But things changed, and Sonic didn't hate this change. He also didn't have the energy to explain why he wasn't quite ready for that.
Sonic picked himself up and pushed back, before raising the covers. The little fennec crawled into the bed, with his pack still on his back. That was weird. Then he flipped around so that he was facing Sonic.
"Surge is outside, and I don't want to be alone." Kit frowned weakly before pushing his head into Sonic's chest.
She was outside? Sonic's leadership began to gnaw at him. He just wanted to sleep.
When the kit was asleep, Sonic carefully rolled out of bed. He worked his way outside, and saw the Green Tenrec, starring up at the moon.
"Can't sleep?" Sonic called out. Cause I can.
Surge sat up and looked at him, before slumping back down and looking up, "I'm enjoying the night life. Fuck off." She couldn't let a sentence go without one, could she?
Sonic sighed, before flopping down, "Thanks for the save back there."
Surge rolled her eyes, "Sheesh, you can't fucking let that go can you? That was a few fucking hours ago."
A few hours? Sonic must have slept longer than he thought, "Are You alright? What's up with the angry tone?"
"You wanna play fucking questionnaire?" Surge snarked at Sonic. He was ready to go inside, but… why not? He was going to play it seriously.
"Alright, you go first." Sonic yawned, scooting over to her.
"Why the fuck did you ask for our help? And no lying, that's the rule." Surge growled, seeming to be surprised by Sonic's response, but at least she was rolling with it.
"I needed someone Eggman didn't grab. And you can get pretty close to my speed." Sonic shrugged, before saying, "My turn, do you care about Kit?"
"Of course I fucking do." Surge groaned as if it were obvious.
"Why don't you show it?" Sonic asked, trying to understand their relationship.
"… It's my turn." Surge growled, and to be fair, it was, "What are you going to do to us after all of this?"
Sonic frowned. There were several answers to that, "Well, I don't really see a reason to hurt you guys. I can't say everyone else will let you go though."
Surge grumbled, "Are you going to stop them?" She glared at Sonic, but Sonic smiled.
"it's my turn." He mocked, "You've got the power, why don't you try to be a hero and help people other than yourself?"
Surge growled in frustration. She was quiet. Sonic was worried he had shut her down, but she replied, "It's kind of my thing. I'm the bad girl, the one who kills the hero."
Sonic opened his mouth, "Don't you want to change that?"
Surge's face flashed with a wave of confusion and pain. She was quiet, before sighing, "It's my turn. Why are you a goodie two shoes? You could do what ever you want."
That took Sonic to some dark places, when he was younger of course, "I used to. I threw the kids around when I was little. But it got lonely up there at the top. There's no fun without people running free. Without fear and-"
"Yeah, yeah, you're a fucking moron, I get it." Surge groaned, rubbing the bridge of her nose.
Sonic smirked, "Do you still want to kill me?"
Surge kept quiet, "Pass. Did you know me before… this?"
Sonic blinked, "You didn't-"
"I said "pass", now answer mine." Surge growled, balling a fist. That wasn't fair, but Sonic couldn't get blood from a stone.
Sonic sighed, "I don't know."
Surge growled, "No lying!"
Sonic shrugged, "I don't. I've met so many people. If I remember everyone I talked to or took a picture with, the census takers would be out of business." Sonic sighed, actually wishing he had an answer for her. "Do you want to kill Starline?"
"That one's fucking easy, hell yeah." Surge grinned, cracking a knuckle, "Alright blue balls, why didn't you ice the old man?"
Sonic shook his head, "That's not my style. I'll just keep stopping him until he learns not to be a bad guy. Why don't you sing more? You sound awesome, and I got a guitar for the whole punk rock vibe."
"…Pa-… I don't like the feeling when people watch me sing." Surge growled, shifting nervously, "Alright, one for the future, how do you want to be remembered? A big statue, with a parade and a holiday?"
Sonic frowned. He had to think deeper about that one, "Nah… Just name a field after me. No big statues or anything. Just let me be free while someone else carries the torch. Alright, one for you, would you take a normal life if it came your way?"
Surge sucked on a tooth with that thought. Sonic stumped her, "Maybe. I don't know… probably not."
Sonic waited for her next question. She seemed to take her time. "Are you done?"
Surge shifted uncomfortably, but stayed quiet. Sonic started to get up, but in the softest voice he'd ever heard from Surge, "Do you think I'm a freak?"
Sonic stopped. He knew those words got under her skin. They gnawed at her, which she simply shrugged off as anger. He also had an answer. One she wasn't going to like.
"…Yeah." Sonic sighed. She was cyborg-virus-tenrec.
He expected a shout, a punch, a scream. Instead, he got a depressed, almost relieved sigh.
Sonic had more to the answer, "But my best friend is a two-tails fox. He's a freak. I'm a blue hedgehog who runs faster than sound and light sometimes. I'm a freak. It's kind of our territory. We're the freaks of the world. But that doesn't make you anything less to me. You are you, and I am glad, even with your swear addiction and rough personality, to know you." Sonic put up a smile at her, hoping that she was listening.
Her voice sounded strange, but after a moment of quiet, she sighed, with a strange strain on her voice, "I'm done playing."
"Will I see you in the morning?" Sonic asked desperately. He saw a road for her, and he may have just thrown her off course.
Surge stood up, and wouldn't look at him, "Who knows."
Sonic hated that answer, but as he climbed into the bed, he couldn't think of a way he could have honestly answered the question, and not upset her.
He stroked the fennec's ears as he drifted off into dream land.
