A/N: To Ainz227, I want to thank you as I realized that the animal I was talking about was an Ignonick, which was mentioned in the Web Novel when Hekkeran talked to Ainz. And it was similar to what I was describing, though slightly different, so I've update chapter 20 to reflect that. The word 'Osteophant' has been replaced with Ignonick now.
Granted, they aren't mentioned in the Light Novel, so I don't know how canon that is, and I have changed a few of their attributes from the Web Novel, but I feel like I have enough leeway to put them in. Reason Demiurge didn't use them? Because he likes torturing humans.
To Spacemonkey777, thanks for the analysis- when I really think about it, given the raw numbers that Suzuki has killed, it is possible that there is something off about my XP calculation, as it is, I'm not really using any sort of formula here and I'm just doing what feels right. While you could make the argument that Suzuki could level up really fast now, and perhaps even reach level 80 or 90 fast, I kind of don't want to do that. Saying it should take 5-6 hours to level up one level is fine for a video game, but most monsters in the New World are very week.
The reason being is that it's been a bit more fun writing for Suzuki when he was a bit lower levelled, and that was kind of the point of this fanfic. Looking back, I kind of regret some of the decisions I made when it comes to levelling up- like I might've left the demon tree for later. Thing is it was cool making up stuff like spells and summons for Suzuki when he was level 40-60, and when he's almost max level some of the charm, at least for me, is gone. Reason being is that whether he's level 70 or 100 he's pretty much overpowered against most New Worlders, when he was 40 or even 50 or 60ish there was still occasionally some room for a challenge.
kukuhimanpr, I can understand what you're saying about it seeming to kill the mood. That was meant to be a sort of awkward moment for Suzuki on purpose, but I can see how it might not be consistent with its tone. Of course, that scene takes place over a long time, when Suzuki sort of first gets over his trauma and when he's more comfortable and relaxed that bit happens.
I kind of do like awkward humor, especially the way that Overlord does it, so you might see a bit more of it.
Jodiak, a Death Knight can't revive itself- it can just survive any hit from max health with 1 HP remaining, and that's a single use ability. So it is possible for a party to beat it by whittling it down.
Everyone else who leaves a review- thank you, even if I don't address you by name.
"Come on Albedo," Suzuki said while opening up a Gate. Since they were going to HQ, they had chosen not to tell Fluder about it- as it was the old man probably needed his rest.
The first thing that Suzuki noticed was the smell- it was the horrible odor of rotting corpses. He had ordered them to be kept there so he could make undead from them, but they were rotting and sadly neither he nor his summons knew the Preservation spell. He would have to do something about that.
While he hadn't found a Mirror of Remote Viewing in the Minotaur Sage's treasure trove, he had realized that by using one of his summons, an Eyeball Corpse and having it cloak itself from scrying magic while he used Necromantic Slave Sight came close in utility to one.
One of the Elder Liches handed him a detailed report of what Thomas had been up to, and Suzuki growled in anger. To think- that the village he had saved was being faced with this! He had heard of the Black Dust before- it was actually a poison in Yggdrasil, albeit a low-level one.
This organization known as Eight Fingers did not endear itself to him either. From what he could tell both Touch Me and Ulbert would have both loved to destroy the organization- Touch Me because they were criminals and Ulbert because they were exploitative. It would be a truly rare instance where the two of them would have agreed with each other.
"There's also an undead among them," Suzuki noted from what Thomas had told him.
"What shall we do?" Albedo asked. She was wrinkling her nose- the stench of death was clearly getting to her too.
"I planned on sending that Death Knight- let's go through with that," Suzuki said.
"I'm sending you," he said, motioning to the Death Knight, which walked through the Gate he made with ease.
Suzuki then summoned an Eyeball Corpse and had it use anti-divination spells on itself before it teleported to observe the battle.
Before he could use Necromantic Slave Sight, someone bounded up to him.
"How are you?" Suzuki asked as Pandora's Actor Jr. barked and started licking his face.
Albedo glared at the dog in disgust mixed with a bit of jealousy.
"Alright, alright, I get you're happy to see me boy, but I have work to do."
An Elder Lich led the dog away.
"Hmm..." Suzuki said, observing the battle. "They don't appear to be too weak..."
The one who fought like a monk could hold his own for a while against the Death Knight, but it was clear that he was going to lose if the fight went on. It was then that the others joined in.
Suzuki thought that their teamwork was quite lacking- they were all clearly not used to working with each other. The way they fought was quite different from seasoned Worker or adventurer teams who could communicate actions and coordinate seamlessly. That said, they were not completely incompetent.
"Oh..." Suzuki said as the Death Knight was slain. He felt nothing towards it- it wasn't even one of his summons. "Well, looks like we need to step in."
"Huh?" Albedo said, confused.
Oh right- she couldn't see what he had seen. "Death Knight was defeated- but they seem pretty beat up too. Time to finish them off."
Suzuki stepped out and cast Continual Light. It was not very useful, but it was one of those basic spells you had to learn if you wanted to learn more advanced ones.
These people blinked and moaned as they adjusted to the light. "Welcome. May I know who you people are?" Suzuki asked.
Zero grunted. "We? We're the Six Arms kid!" He glared at Suzuki. "That monster right now was one of yours, right? Too bad you wasted your trump card like that! Now it's time you enter a world of pain!"
Suzuki turned his head to take a better look at these people. Neither he nor Albedo were wearing their Adamantite plates, else this would have gone a bit differently, he assumed. "You have an undead in you midst... why?"
Davernoch replied, "I have made an alliance with them to learn magic an-"
He got no further as Suzuki had cast Absolute Obedience on him silently.
While he and Suzuki did not possess a mental bond like Suzuki would with his summons, Davernoch was able to get an estimate of Suzuki's power because one needed to be a magnitude stronger than another undead if they wished to dominate it.
And so Davernoch knew that even if they all hadn't fought that Death Knight first, they would've still had very little chance of beating this man.
But he could not even open his mouth to shout out a warning without his new master's permission.
"Ah," Suzuki said.
His stat sheet now looked like this:
Mage 15 lv
Battle Mage 10 lv
Sorcerer 10 lv
Necromancer 10 lv
Umbramancer 9 lv
True Necromancer 10 lv
Master of the Dark Arts 5 lv
Immortal 1 lv
Total: 0 racial + 70 job = 70 levels
However, he had one level left in reserve, which he immediately assigned to the Umbramancer job class.
And with that, he was now level 71, which was a major game changer- well, he was still playing Yggdrasil or whatever game this was, but he was massively changed now.
While it was true that now his ability to level up would be greatly throttled as compared to before, it was also true that he was far more powerful just by that single level.
He had gained several new skills. One of them shaved 3 points off of any damage he took. Another one of them raised his spell cap to 400. His uses of Create Undead for low-tier and mid-tier undead were increased, and he could even use Create High Tier Undead once per day now. His resistance to spells was increased so that he would resist all but a sixth tier spell from someone like Fluder completely.
But, he was most interested in the one thing that this let him do regarding spells he could cast. For one, he had gotten his first time manipulating spell, the ninth tier Time Accelerator but that wasn't all he was interested in.
"Super Tier Magic!" Suzuki shouted as glyphs appeared all around him.
Albedo looked towards him quizzically. She knew about this tier of magic through talking to him, but had never seen it for herself.
It was actually one of the few things where Suzuki knew more than her- which is why he tended to talk about it as he loved seeing how interested Albedo was in what he was saying.
Suzuki honestly felt a little bad about not including Fluder in this whole scheme- the man would've loved to see this kind of spell. But, Suzuki was casting it near HQ and he didn't quite trust Fluder completely yet.
No denying it- Fluder was useful, but Suzuki had the feeling if the man ever wandered into another player, say, one who was level one hundred and knew more magic than Suzuki, he would have no problem selling them out. Some things had to be kept secret.
"What sort of spell are you casting, Suzuki-sama?" Albedo asked.
"The spell Necropolis," Suzuki said.
He would've liked to learn something like Pantheon or Pandemonium which would be a bit more useful in fights but he needed to be at least level 80 to cast those.
The spell Necropolis was an upgraded version of the tenth tier spell Create Fortress. Simply put- it was a way for one to make a guild base outside of the sanctioned ones.
You see, the devs of Yggdrasil had gotten it into their heads that at some point in time, there would be so many players around that the number of places that could be turned into guild bases would run out- and then people would want alternatives.
In reality, the game never got to be quite so popular and only one-fourth of possible guild bases had ever been used in the game's ten-year long run, and that was with much of the game being unexplored.
Necropolis literally translated to 'City of the Dead', but it was a bit of an exaggeration for what the spell did. To call it a city was quite a stretch- it was really only about as big as Nazarick's ninth floor. There were actual Necropolises in Yggdrasil of course- giant cities of undead which could be conquered and turned into guild bases, but Suzuki seriously doubted that such places existed in this world.
He had learned the spell once- but had been Player Killed afterwards and lost access to it. Once he joined a guild, namely, Ainz Ooal Gown, he had seen no need to relearn the spell as he had had the Great Tomb of Nazarick.
While he was lost in these memories, the spell completed. While using it, he had made sure to specify that none of the structures would be made over the entrance to New Nazarick.
Walls which were thirty feet tall enveloped a cluster of approximately twenty large buildings with a few smaller houses scattered in between.
The place had many drawbacks when compared to even the most basic of guild bases. For one, since it was lower than Castle level, one could not make custom NPCs to defend it.
One could not customize anything about it, as a matter of fact.
Approximately five hundred undead lived within the city, but they were all lower than level thirty save for the guards.
Also, since it was open to the air, it was very difficult to defend from enemy raids.
It came pre-built with a number of traps which could not be changed, upgraded, or added to.
With all that said, it did have some perks to it.
For one, it completely blocked teleportation magic into it. You couldn't make guild rings for your teammates, but it would normally allow allies to teleport into it. However, given the way friendly fire worked in this world Suzuki doubted anyone but him could teleport into it.
Secondly, it boasted a number of vendors. They worked like NPC shops in many games, where one could exchange Yggdrasil gold for certain items. As far as Suzuki remembered, none of the items that could be sold were too valuable within this city, but it was good to have options.
Third, most divination magic was automatically blocked if it came from outside the city. Suzuki believed that it was still possible to attempt to use divination magic, but one would need to be a specialist with at least 80 levels devoted to that kind of craft to peer inside the city walls.
Fourth, and this was what excited Suzuki the most- it had a Shredder! In other words, a place where he could throw in things and get Yggdrasil gold in return.
"Let's go in," Suzuki said.
While the city was not very big, it did look quite elegant- far more so than either Arwintar or any other city he had seen up till now.
Guarding the city gates were two level 60 Night Reapers. They were the strongest creatures summoned by the spell.
Of course, one could simply fly over the city walls, so the purpose of a gate was kind of moot, but still...
If any of the monsters within were destroyed, or the city damaged, it would have to be repaired by paying with gold. While it was possible to terminate the spell and cast it at another location, the damage dealt to the city was considered to be 'saved', in other words, one could not simply cast the spell again to get a pristine base if it was destroyed. Not only that, but unlike a regular guild base, there was not a small amount of damage that could be repaired for free weekly.
The two Night Reapers saluted Sazuki. "We welcome the mayor of our city! Please come in sir!"
"She's with me," Suzuki said, pointing to Albedo. Davernoch, who had been ordered to shut up and trail behind them would not be attacked as he was considered a creature under Suzuki's command.
Suzuki immediately bounded to a nearby shop. It was run by a skeleton wearing a chef's hat- in other words, it was a restaurant. Suzuki was the mayor so to speak, but the vendors would still demand gold for their services. If, however, it turned out that they could materialize things out of thin air if given enough gold like in a video game, he would be ecstatic.
There was a theater, a hotel, a library, a hot spring, a church, a bar, and to Suzuki's dismay-
"Hey there, Suzuki-sama," a vampire bride said. "Wanna enjoy a nice night with us?"
She motioned to another vampire bride and the two of them began caressing each other seductively while looking at him
Stupid devs! Why'd they program in a brothel in this kind of place?
It was probably meant as a joke, of course, but in this world, it was made real. While one couldn't explicitly show 18+ content in Yggdrasil, one could allude to it like that. Probably, in the game, if one spent money on them nothing would've actually happened. In this world though...
"Albedo, they're only doing what they're programmed to," Suzuki said. "Don't attack them."
Albedo huffed but left them alone.
The two of them walked over to the mayor's palace- in other words, Suzuki's palace. It was the best-defended place in the city, and if one wanted to, one could set it up as one's spawn point in case one was killed.
Of course, if the caster who built the city was killed, the city would cease to exist, so to Suzuki it was moot. He also could not revive Albedo if she were killed given she was not an NPC of this guild base.
And, as a final drawback, there was no way to make a 'guild weapon' using the city. This was rather unfortunate given guild weapons could be made very powerful given they could hold a massive amount of data.
With all that considered, it was a small wonder that practically no one ever learned the spell. A solo player could easily find a better guild base- especially if they had a few mercenary NPCs to help them.
Suzuki had to admit that the inside of his palace was very nice-looking though- it even put Jircniv's palace to shame, though it had nothing when compared to Nazarick.
An Elder Lich in a golden robe was waiting for him. He bowed. "I welcome the ruler and mayor of our city. I am its governor." Like all the other NPCs in this city, this one had no name.
"Can you take us to the throne room?" Suzuki asked.
"Throne room? Ah, you mean your office, indeed," the Elder Lich said and lead them up a flight of stairs to a very well-furnished room. While it was not as spacious as Jircniv's court or Draudillon's throne room, it was far more luxurious.
However, there was one problem.
"That's... the throne?" Suzuki asked.
The thing was made entirely out of bones.
Now, it was understandable given this was an undead city, but it would feel very weird for Suzuki, as a human, to sit on it. He was pretty sure some of the bones were human too, but even if they had been made by magic and not from actual human bones, Suzuki wouldn't feel right sitting on it.
There was a spell by the name of Elysium similar to Necropolis but which required Priest type classes to unlock. If he had used that, he would've manifested a small angelic city and wouldn't have had to sit upon a throne that looked like it had been made for a Lich King.
"Um... are there no other chairs?"
"None which are as worthy to seat one as esteemed as you," the Elder Lich replied. There were also no other chairs in the room- it appeared that the mayor was the only one who was supposed to remain seated here.
Suzuki didn't want to sit on that though- and then a lightbulb went off over his head. "Albedo! I will give you your punishment for the demon tree incident right here. Take off your armor! And then get down on all fours!"
Davernoch was speechless- but not just because he had been ordered to shut up.
Ever since he had been 'born' on the Katze Plains, he had but one goal- to learn of magic. He had heard rumors of a society of undead spellcasters but had been unable to make contact with them.
Zero had taken him in and given him magic tutors- for this he was grateful, though he knew that Zero only did so because the man had ulterior motives. Regardless, Davernoch was happy to serve.
And then, he had been completely enslaved by a necromancer. A necromancer, who, from the looks of it, could cast at minimum sixth tier magic. The necromancer had killed all of his 'allies' though in truth Davernoch had no attachment to them.
He had then seen his new Master, Suzuki Satoru, cast a spell that he had never even heard of in regards to its magnitude. He called it Super Tier magic- also something he had never heard of.
What had emerged from it was remarkable- a city of the undead! It was clear that it had been summoned by magic, though as far as Davernoch knew, only the Dragon Lords could possess such terrifying power. But had the city been created entirely from scratch using magic- or had it been summoned by magic from another dimension? He didn't know which of those options he would rather believe was true.
It gave him an idea as to just how out of his league he was. That said, he had to say that he quite admired the city made by his Master. If only he had seen such a city earlier in his life...
But it didn't end there. No.
His new Master was staring at him while sitting upon a world-class beauty dressed in white.
Davernoch had seen several acts of depravity while as a member of Eight Fingers- these never really bothered him as he had no interest being one of the undead.
It appeared that his new Master was one who enjoyed sitting upon woman. Davernoch needed to make a note of that- he needed to prove his usefulness to his new Master, else he knew that he was going to be killed. He knew he had very little use to his new Master, who could conjure up undead so powerful they could snap him in two in an instant. And Davernoch had to live- how else would he one day be capable of casting magic as powerful as his Master? If anything, Davernoch would gladly cooperate with this man if he was willing to impart his teachings to Davernoch.
Of course, there was hardly any way that Davernoch could bargain with this man- given that he had been dominated, there was nothing that he had that this man could not take with ease.
However- there was still something odd about this setup. His Master looked quite uncomfortable from upon his seat, if anything, and it seemed it was the woman who was enjoying it. Was she really such a masochist?
"Right, now onto business," his Master said. "I permit you to speak- tell me everything about your organization!"
Davernoch blabbed about everything- and once he was done with that Suzuki asked a few more questions.
"Suzuki-sama," the woman said. "I think it is clear that there is something we need to do about this organization named Eight Fingers. They will not leave Carne alone- I suggest we temporarily place a halt towards our plan to move towards the East and settle our affairs in this Kingdom first."
His Master nodded. "Yeah, I do think that's our best course for now."
Davernoch spoke. "They will certainly try to contact Six Arms, Master, but if you were to present their corpses to the authorities and make it known that they are dead- they would not dare to strike against you then."
The man looked at him with suspicion. He was probably thinking that Davernoch was trying to save the organization known as Eight Fingers by saying so.
"Oh? And then what else will happen?" his Master said.
"The Eight Fingers will collapse into warring factions," Davernoch said. The Six Arms could keep everyone in check, though with them gone there would be a power vacuum. Various factions would emerge- all of them vying for power against each other.
"And there would be further bloodshed with a massive gang war," his Master said, scratching his chin. "Much like if you got rid of the Yakuza..."
Davernoch did not know what a 'yakuza' was, but it seemed as if for now, his life would be spared.
"Not only that," the woman said. "There are a few... issues I would like to sort out in this kingdom. There is a certain person of interest I would like to meet, and several objectives I would like to accomplish."
This world-class beauty then began outlining a plan so fiendish and crafty it surprised Davernoch- he had assumed that she was a simple concubine. However, it appeared that her intellect and analytical ability was a league above even his own.
It was all made more amazing by the fact that she had done all of this planning and explaining while his Master was still seated upon her.
"Okay," said his Master. He then suddenly turned pale and got up. "I'm so sorry Albedo- I had lost all track of time and was sitting on you for so long you must be sore-"
"Not at all!" the woman cried out. "I am a tank, Suzuki-sama! I feel nothing even after doing all of this! If anything, I gladly take this as a reward, and would happily accept being your chair all the time!"
Again, Davernoch was left speechless.
"Hmm..." Princess Renner said, reading the latest report. "Climb, it seems one of the Six Arms was taken down!"
"Wonderful news, Your Highness," Climb said with a smile. "Which one was it?"
"Succulent," Princess Renner said. "Can you imagine? It was a simple village which took him down!"
"A village?" Climb said, surprised. Based on his strength, Succulent should've been able to plough through a hundred ordinary soldiers easily. "Was there someone amazing there?"
"That's the question which isn't clear," Princess Renner answered. "But it seems that they all managed to work together to take him down."
"Ah, that's amazing," Climb said. "Ordinary villagers defeating a member of Six Arms- it honestly sounds like a tale the bards would tell!"
"Indeed," Princess Renner answered. "No matter how strong the Six Arms are, if they lose a member they'll begin to lose influence, control, and power." She then said, "Well, I think it's getting late. See you tomorrow, Climb! We'll talk more about this in the morning."
"Yes, Milady!" Climb said as he exited the room.
Princess Renner looked out towards the full moon which illuminated the courtyard of the palace. The flowers looked beautiful even in the moonlight.
Normally, she would've called on one of the maids to draw her a bath, but she refrained from ringing the bell on her desk.
A shadow flickered against the moon.
"I've been expecting you," Princess Renner said as the figure entered through the window. "Albedo-don, no, Albedo-sama." She bowed her head.
"Fufufu, so it seems my reputation precedes me," Albedo said. She smiled malevolently. "Truly, you are certainly an... interesting human."
"Indeed," Princess Renner said. "I... have been able to piece together what I've seen and heard."
Princess Renner bowed her head again.
"It appears you are every bit the woman I heard about. I have a present for you," Albedo said. "Or, to be more accurate, this is a trade." She handed Renner a chest with several seals on it. "I would be interested in... experimenting in some ways. Of course, you would be getting something in return."
"Of course, I am quite thankful," Princess Renner said. "How may I be of service?"
"For starters there is one matter I wanted information on..."
The Eight Fingers were holding yet another meeting. One thing had changed since last time though- Zero was absent. In his place was Davernoch.
The chiefs of each division would traditionally bring two bodyguards each, with the exception of Zero- given the man could solo everyone else in the room. However, Davernoch had brought someone along- it was a girl from one of Cocco Doll's brothels.
"What happened to Zero?" Hilma asked.
The Drug Division had essentially teamed up with the Security Division in order to orchestrate a hit on Gazef Stronoff, but this had resulted in Succulent being killed. Afterwards, they had heard nothing from Zero, and only Davernoch had returned after the Six Arms went to avenge him. If Zero was busy, it would perhaps make sense for Davernoch or one of the others to be here in his place. Just one problem: it was the Security Division who had called this emergency meeting in the first place, so it was only expected that Zero himself be here.
A masked figure stepped out from the shadows behind Davernoch. The man was wearing a long cloak and gauntlets. "Greetings, all of you." His voice was slightly distorted- was that the effect of a magic item? "My name is Momon, and I am the new head of Six Arms."
There was a moment of silence. Someone coughed. "Is this a joke?"
The man named Momon snapped his fingers and Davernoch pulled out a chest which he placed on the table. The Elder Lich then got up, and bowed to Suzuki. "This is my new leader."
Davernoch then got rid of the chair, and ordered the girl to get down on all fours.
"Wait- what?" the man named Momon said under his breath. He then took Davernoch aside. "What's with the girl?"
"I simply found a chair worthy of you, Master," Davernoch replied. His Master had given him some leeway while working to arrange things for this meeting, and Davernoch had used that to get a girl for him to use as a chair.
The man named Momon hissed, "What made you think I wanted to- oh..." He then sighed as he realized what had happened. "In the future, do not do this again! I just want a normal chair!"
Davernoch realized he had made some sort of mistake and hastily chased away the girl- who was in tears because she thought she had done something wrong and would swiftly be executed, or worse.
As it was, being used as a chair was by far one of the nicer things that could happen to a woman in the brothels of the Eight Fingers.
Meanwhile, the masked man hissed under his breath. "...should've rehearsed this... what was he thinking?... embarrassing me... I had my whole entrance planned out... now I just look stupid in front of the mobsters..."
The other people there were beginning to lose their patience as Davernoch returned. For now, they were just confused, but that confusion would quickly turn to anger if they were made to wait any longer.
"Again, what's the deal here? Where is Zero?"
The man named Momon simply opened the chest and took out a human head.
The head of Zero.
Zero, the man strong enough to kill everyone else in the room without breaking a sweat. The strongest member of Six Arms.
"I-Impossible!"
"Zero-san has taken a permanent retirement, so to speak," Momon said. "As have the others."
Davernoch retrieved a staff- no, it was no staff. It was an iron pike upon which were placed the heads of the rest of Six Arms one on top of the other. Holes had been drilled in their skulls to let the rod pass through them through and through, and Peshurian was even wearing his helmet so that everyone could recognize him.
It looked like a macabre totem pole.
"I take it there are no issues then?" Momon said as he sat down.
A/N: With that, this 'story arc' is over and I'll be working on Nazarick in the Real World for now. That's how it'll be- rather than one chapter for each of the three stories I'm working on I'll do a few for each in spurts like this.
Regarding the Super Tier Spell, I had trouble trying to think of one. Thinking of original spells is kind of hard. The logic behind what I wrote was that if a Tenth Tier spell can summon a level 70 creature, and a Super Tier one can summon 6 level 80 ones, a Super Tier spell is about 7 or 8 times stronger than a tenth tier one. Though of course, there must are various variations on that so that kind of analysis isn't strictly true.
With that in mind, I was thinking of making an upgrade to Create Fortress with a spell that made a sort of tiny guild base, I hope I didn't make it too overpowered. I've tried to keep things in line with what exist in Overlord, and have tried not to make things too overpowered/underpowered. I think overall the spell, with its limitations, should be considered fine though, let me know what you think. While I've made up monsters/spells before, they were still within the limits of canon and power laws established in canon, though I'm not sure about Necropolis. I see a lot of fanfics which introduce things which frankly I consider to be borderline broken, and I've tried not to do that.
