Chapter 5

Back in the cell, Clarke started to make plans. She had requested every earth skill book her mom could find, a notebook, and a medical textbook. While she waited, Clarke thought about the timeline. She wasn't sent back far enough to save her father , it broke her heart, but she realised. That was the start of it all. If she had saved him, he might have found a temporary fix, and she wouldn't have been sent to earth when she had. She had to accept that there were some things she wasn't going to be able to change.

All she knew for certain was that she wasn't going to let Lexa die again. Everything had gonedownhilll from ther. That was the tipping point.

She lay on her bed thinking through everything and had decided on her course of action once she got to earth. She knew how she was going to approach things to make a more positive future.

She lay there making plans when a knock sounded on her cell and the door mechanism unlocked loudly. Her mom, still red eyed with messy hair, presented her with a pile of books and a notepad. Her mom stroked her face.

"Clarke honey, are you sure about all of this?"

"Yes, Mom, it will happen. I feel it in my gut. I need to be prepared. These will help me. There is one last thing."

"What do you need, Clarke? I've already pushed Jaha's patients requesting to bring you books"

"I know, Mom, thank you. The next thing I need will be a little tricker, but I think you can do it. "

"OK Clarke, I will try,"

"They are probably going to bring you in on the project to send us to earth. They will probably not send us with any resources as they probably expect us not to survive. So I need a basic medical kit put together between now and then"

"Clarke, no, they could float me too if they found out I was stealing,"

"That's why you need to be clever, mom, every person you treat. Just add one item within the quota to the list of resources used. Take small amounts that can be hidden in their charts. That way, nobody will question it. For example, if they have an open wound, you use 1 sterilise wipe and 1 bandage. The quota is 2 of each, so you put the extra aside for me."

"Clarke, this is very dangerous,"

"I know, Mom, but I think if they send us, we will survive, and we will need medical care, and there are some things I won't be able to find down there. Even if it's only a few things, it could be the difference between me living and surviving or me dying"

"Clarke...I...I don't know..."

"Please just think about it. If you start and it's too risky or you fear being caught, you can stop, but I need this mom, I need you to do this for me,"

"OK Clarke, I'm not making any promises, but I will try... you seem so set on this honey.. something is different about you."

"I'm growing up, mom. Dad's gone and my bubble of protection with it. I have lived a privileged life so far... but now I'm the same as everyone else in these celle. I want to make sure that when I get to the ground, we are ready for the challenges we will face'

"You sound just like your father sometimes...he was so proud of you,"

The door opened, and the guard signals that time is up, they hug, and Abbey left thinking about the huge weight her daughter seems to carry and the request she's made of her. Know it was her fault her husband is gone and Clarke is locked away her guilt won't allow her to deny Clarke anything.
