Things were going fine in the house, everyone was doing well and was healthy. Ace had just gotten a phone and he loved it, loved using it and playing games on it. Thatch already had a phone, so Ace deserved one too. Ace had had some issues at that start, never having had a phone before, but he learned quickly. He was also super careful with it, scared to break it or lose it, which Marco got. Ace was really careful with all of his stuff, much more than what a child usually was. Probably since he had never had things before. Things were going fine with Ace. He was settling still and had small issues now and then. But, it was doable and handle-able. He had just been at Ace's after school practice, after an accident where Ace had gotten some bad bruising, but it was all explained when he showed up, so it was fine. It was also nice to see Ace in action, as it was gymnastics, and Ace was amazing with it. But things were calm for now, and it was a week later, when Marco was at work something happened.

Marco gave a sigh, not really getting anyone worth keeping in their interviews, as they needed a couple new employees and they had standards. They needed people who could work as directors for their company, and that took a lot of skill and knowledge, making it hard to find new employees. But, they were only halfway through today; they had 4 days with interviews to get through. Time consuming, but he hoped it would turn out good. As they were in between people, having a couple minutes of break between everyone to discuss if they fit the mark, he and 3 other directors were present to see if they met the recommendations, him being the one to hire, and the others to see if the personality would be okay. The reason they needed 2 new people was because the last two personalities were the worst and egoistic, selfish, not at all helpful. So, they were more stern now.

As he had just sent his secretary to get the next one in, he felt his phone rang, his personal one, and answered without really looking; no one called this number when he was working, unless necessary. "Marco Fishback." He heard a sigh on the phone. "I'm sorry to interrupt your work, Mr Fishback." That was Robin, Ace's and Thatch's teacher, she rarely called, especially as school had started just an hour and half ago. He gave a motion to hold the next person a bit, sure something was wrong. "Miss Robin. It is fine, yoi. Has anything happened?" If Thatch was in trouble with the teachers again, just like last week, that boy wouldn't leave his room for a month. "Not happened, per se," started the teacher, "But Ace is ill. He has a high fever, is tired, and his breathing is strained. I've just sent him to the infirmary, but he's too sick to stay in school for today, and most likely for a few days."

Marco frowned. Ace hadn't seemed sick this morning. He didn't doubt the teacher, but Ace couldn't have gotten sick this fast. Had they missed it? "Of course, Miss Robin, yoi. I will come get him and keep him home until he's better. We didn't notice he was ill this morning." The teacher sighed sadly. "I thought so. It's not on you; he could never afford being sick before, so I think it's in his nature to hide it. He was nervous about me calling you, not wanting to bother you. But, he really can't stay in the state he's in." Of course it was; one couldn't be sick when they were living on the streets and were an easy victim already for being a child. "Of course, Miss Robin. I'll leave now and pick him up, I'll be there in 15 minutes." The teacher gave a relieved breath. "That's good. He's in the infirmary, and I believe you know your way there." That he did, mostly because of Thatch's antics, and a few times with Haruta and Namur, when they had injured themselves accidentally. "I do. See you soon, yoi."

The teacher gave a bye and he hung up, before looking at his 3 employees. "I have a sick child, so I need to leave. Call in Whitebeard if you need to, but I think you can manage, yoi. If you find someone you think fit, tell them I would like to see them again in 10 days to discuss more, and apologize for needing two interviews since something important came up." All of them nodded, and even if they called in Whitebeard, he would still want to check everyone over; that man was too nice at times. As he headed to his car, he sent a message to Whitebeard that Ace was sick and Marco was getting him, and that he might be called in to the interviews, to update the man. He would call later, when he was home and everything was calm. He got a small response back that it was fine, the man knowing he would call later.

When he got to the school, he headed straight for the infirmary, finding the school nurse, Tifa, writing something on her computer, looking up when she heard him come in. "Ah, Mr Fishback. Here for Ace, I presume?" The woman asked as she stood up, him nodding. "I am, yoi. How is he?" The nurse sighed. "Poor kid has really caught a bad case of the flu, he has always been a bit prone to them actually. I'm just glad I can actually send him home for once." He didn't know Ace was prone to that, and he would set up a meeting with their doctor in a week or so, when Ace was better, and see if there was a reason why. He followed the woman as they walked towards the bed, only one of them having their curtains drawn, making him sure Ace was there. "He got some antipyretic half an hour ago," started the nurse, "so he can't get more for 3 hours. It also knocked him out; he must feel awful and tired from being sick." He really wished he had noticed Ace was sick this morning.

When they got to the bed and the nurse opened the curtains, he still felt worried when he saw Ace and how sick he actually looked. Ace was lying somewhat curled together, breathing shallowly with his mouth, his face pale and even sweating, probably cold sweating, cheeks tinted red. Ace was really sick. "Miss Robin had to go back to class, and he is dismissed and everything is in order, so you can leave." Marco nodded and moved to crouch down and stroke Ace's head, hand moving through his hair. "Ace, yoi?" No reaction, making him try again a bit louder, and when Ace still didn't react, Marco moved the covers Ace had off and lifted his sick child, Ace just giving out a small discomfort sound. While Ace was 12, he had a petite body and didn't weigh much, being much lighter than Thatch, who was a bit bulkier from being on the football team. He wasn't concerned for Ace's thin body, but it wouldn't hurt if he gained some weight either. Marco was sure it came from being on the streets; Eustass was smaller than the average 12 year old too.

He gave a small goodbye to the nurse as he headed out, placing Ace in the passenger seat and being sure to fasten the seat belt, before starting the drive home. When he was about ten minutes from home, he heard some groaning from Ace and saw him opening his eyes, which had him move a hand to Ace's leg. "Hey, yoi. Waking up?" Ace gave a small sound as he moved a hand to his head, eyes opening. "W-where am I?" Marco gave a smile. "In my car, I just got you from school, Ace. You're sick and we're headed home, yoi." He could see Ace on his way to shake his head, but quickly stopped as his head was probably hurting. "W-why? 'm not that sick." Marco shook his head. "No, it's not about how sick you are, but that you are, yoi. You should be home resting and getting well, not at school." "But work-" Marco shook his head. "No, yoi. You are more important than work; it can wait. This isn't up for discussion, Ace. You're sick and it's fine. I would have done the same if Thatch, Namur, or Haruta was sick. You shouldn't be at school." He would be sure Ace got it was fine to be sick and he really needed to be home. Not only so he could get better and not get worse, but since he could infect more children. Ace gave a nod and leaned his head back on the seat and closed his eyes again. He was probably tired.

When he got home, Ace opened his eyes again and Marco helped him a bit to walk inside, Ace seeming a bit unsteady. "Go lie down on the couch, yoi. I'll get some water." Ace just gave a nod and went to the couch, Marco heading into the kitchen and surprised to see Vista there. "Hi, Vista. Why are you home, yoi?" It was obvious he scared the other as he almost jumped. "Got called off work, cutbacks and since my partner is training someone up. You?" Marco chuckled, getting a glass and filling it with cold water. "Ace is sick, yoi." The man nodded. "I can stay with him if you'd like, and you can go back to work." Normally, he would have said yes to that, but from what Miss Robin said, Ace hadn't had it easy before with being sick, so he wanted to be home. "No, yoi. It's fine, I've already said I'm taking a week off and covered everything. And, a word from Ace's teacher, being sick has never been easy for him. I just want to be here." The man nodded, understanding that and why he wanted to be here. "Well, I'm home for today anyway, and probably the next 2-3 days, so just ask if you need anything." Marco nodded and headed out to Ace, who was sitting on the couch and relaxed.

"Here," He said as he was close, Ace opening his eyes and giving thanks as he took a few sips. When he put the glass down, Ace just leaned back against the couch, which had him give a small sigh, knowing he had said before they weren't allowed to sleep on the couch. "Ace, why don't you lie down? I need to do some things in the kitchen and don't want you far away, yoi." Ace blinked at him, frowning. "But… But I'm not allowed to sleep on the couch..?" Marco nodded. "Right, when you are well, yoi. But, the rules are a bit different when sick, as it is for everyone. I just want to be close." Ace gave a nod, before he carefully laid down, obviously unsure if he was allowed to or not. But when Ace was lying and seemed okay, Marco headed on into the kitchen to do his things. When he was done half an hour later and headed out to the living room, Ace was asleep on the couch, making Marco smile. Ace needed to relax, so it was good he was asleep. Marco moved over and stroked Ace's hair a bit, the kid moving in his sleep, but not waking up. As Ace was okay, Marco moved to continue some house work. When he was in the washing closet, he thought he could bring out a bucket. Ace was sick, and might get nauseous and throw up. He had heard about multiple co-workers that had sick children, so it could happen. He put some water in the bucket, before placing it next to Ace, just in case. Better to be safe. Marco then went back to doing light housework.

When an hour had passed, he checked on Ace again, and had to frown as he did. Ace was lying curled together with his arms around his stomach, seeming uncomfortable and scared. "Ace, what's wrong? Do you feel worse, yoi?" Ace just gave a small nod, eyes closed tightly, moving to curl more together, something he had seen his other children do at times. He moved to grab the bucket he had placed next to the couch, filled with a bit of water, knowing one could often puke when having the flu, especially children. "Do you feel nauseous, Ace?" Marco had a feeling he did, as he laid the same way the others did at times, not wanting to throw up as they tried to keep still from getting more nauseous and actually puking. Ace gave a small nod again, hands moving to hold tighter around himself, actually looking to be in pain. That wasn't normal. He moved a hand to Ace's back, rubbing it. "Relax, Ace. You're nauseous, it comes with the flu, yoi. If you need to throw up, it's better to get it over with." It was, and all his children said they felt better after, no matter how uncomfortable it could be. Fighting it made it worse.

But, Ace just shook his head, which had him move his hand a bit up Ace's back and stroked it slowly, hoping to make Ace relax. "It's fine, Ace. It's okay to be nauseous and throw up; it's normal, yoi." Ace just shook his head more, tears starting to go down his cheeks, magnifying Marco's concern. "What's wrong, Ace? Are you in pain, yoi? You need to relax." Ace shook his head more, tears continuing to make its way down his face. "N-no!" Started Ace, sounding petrified and panicked. "I don't want to throw up! I don't wanna die!" Marco frowned, not sure what Ace was talking about. "No, Ace. What are you talking about? You won't die, yoi." Ace just shook his head more, looking scared, almost petrified. Marco was about to speak up again, when he felt Ace's body tense more than it already was, his entire body flinching, as if gagging, which had him move Ace up from his lying position and bent a bit forward, the best way Ace could be right now when his body went against his wishes, and Ace threw up, Marco already prepared with the bucket. Ace looked to be panicking more, Marco giving out comforting words as he stroked Ace's back, hoping it would pass soon for Ace. There was obviously something about throwing up that really scared Ace.

When Ace was done, he didn't move as he gave a sob, still bent a bit forward, Marco waiting a couple seconds as he comforted Ace, to be sure it was over. As it seemed over, Ace giving out sobs, Marco moved to grab the glass with water, handing it to Ace. "Here. Take some water and rinse your mouth, yoi. To get rid of the taste." Ace needed help doing it, seeming terrified, which had him not wanting to bring anything up now. Ace was already so on edge. "Here, lay down, yoi." He said as he helped Ace lay down, before bringing the blanket over him. "Just relax, yoi. Everything is fine, Ace." Ace didn't seem to calm down, giving sobs as he had his mouth closed to not make more noise, crying still. Marco was at a loss actually, no idea what to do. He, thankfully, managed to get one idea, which he hoped would bring some light. But, for now, Ace needed to calm down. Marco sat and carefully stroked Ace's back and moved his hand through his hair, telling Ace to relax, just breathe, it was over. When Ace fell asleep not long after, Marco emptied the bucket, then rinsed it, before putting a bit of water in it and placing it back by the couch, just in case. He then went to the kitchen, glad to see Vista still there. "Vista, could you watch Ace for a minute, yoi? I need to make a call." The man nodded and as he stood up to head to the living room, Marco gave a breath. "He's asleep, but if he wakes up or even shows the tiniest sign of throwing up, get me, yoi." The man nodded, Marco knowing Vista would follow his orders.

He then went to the hallway, just out of earshot of talking, wanting to hear if Vista called for him, and opened his phone to give a call to someone he really hoped could help. He was glad when the man answered within 2 rings. "Yello! It's Shanks!" Marco gave a breathe. "Shanks, it's Marco. Do you have a minute, yoi?" "Yes," started the man on the other end, "I got called off for a couple days, although I did ask since they needed someone to to leave to have a spot open for some intern thing. Is anything wrong?" That was the same reason Vista had, Marco actually a bit glad about that. He sighed. "It's Ace, yoi. He's sick- just the flu- but he had what's best described as a panic attacked when he threw up. I have no idea what to do." He heard Shanks sigh defeated. "I should have told you that. Just let me get a bit more private." Marco was glad the man knew something, and hope it was something Marco could fix.

It was a few seconds later when Shanks spoke up again. "There. Just wanted to be out of earshot from Eustass. And it was a panic attack, I just thought- or hoped- Ace wouldn't react to it." Marco took a breath. "To what, yoi? Ace said he didn't want to throw up since he didn't want to die." Marco had no idea why Ace even thought that; one didn't die from throwing up when sick. Shanks sighed. "Although Eustass has never actually thrown up, he's just been nauseous, he was terrified too. From what he said, he has seen 2- also mentioned Ace has seen 4- that have thrown up and died. Drug overdose or drunk beyond what's possible. And that's the only time they have seen it. They associate throwing up with dying, since that's what they know, that's what both of them have seen." Marco moved a hand to his face, sitting down as a breath left him. No wonder Ace was terrified, he actually had seen people die from throwing up. "What can I do to help, yoi?" He heard a defeated breath from Shanks. "I don't know. Honestly. I called in a favor from our police psychiatrist to speak with Eustass, but it barely worked. He didn't know how to speak to kids. I have no idea what to do myself."

That wasn't the answer he had hoped for, but it was something. "Okay, I think maybe I can call that psychiatrist from the cps trial, Deuce, yoi. He has been amazing explaining things to the other children and really connects with them. He must have some idea what to do." He heard a breath on the other end. "Yeah, you should. Could you have him call me too?" Marco thought for a second. "I have a better idea, yoi. Ace and Eustass are close and they seem to be more open together. Why don't I call Dr Deuce and when he comes, hopefully within the next day as I am floored with what to do, you come over and join? If you don't mind a sick Ace." Shanks sounded stunned. "Y-yeah, I would actually really appreciate that." Marco nodded. "Good, yoi. I'll call you back soon, when I've spoken to Dr Deuce." Shanks gave a thankful yes before they hung up, Marco moving his hands to his face. Ace was legit scared of dying, and he wasn't sure how to handle that. He really hoped, with all his heart, Deuce could come by and help. For now, he needed a couple seconds to just gather himself.

When he had, he went through his phone, finding the number to the child psychiatrist, calling it. He felt defeated when it went to voicemail, the man probably working. He decided to wait a few minutes, before trying again, but it was also just voicemail. Marco took a breath and was going to head back to Ace and wait half an hour before he tried again, when an unknown number called. Marco, already being in the hallway answered, not really in the mood to speak with anyone, but it could be from work or something important. As he answered as usual, he felt a breath leave him when the caller spoke. "Mr Fishback, I'm sorry to call with another number, but I'm at work- in between patients so it's fine- and using my work phone halts my work and enables me to actually talk. Is anything the matter?" Marco sighed. "Yes, thank you for calling back, yoi. And yes, it's Ace, and his friend Eustass, but for now Ace. He has come down with the flu, nothing bad, but he's nauseous and throwing up. And, he had a panic attack when he did. He's only seen four people throw up, and they all have died- they overdosed on drugs or something close to that. Ace is legitimately terrified he will die, yoi. And, I have absolutely no idea what to do."

He heard some shuffling on the phone. "I see. That is not that uncommon actually, especially someone with a past like Ace. Listen, I actually have a cancellation for my 2 o'clock, and the next one I can move as that patient would much rather have an early meeting tomorrow. I could drop by close to half past 2 if that fits with your schedule?" Marco blinked. "Yes, that would be perfect actually, yoi. I will have a childhood friend of Ace join; he has the same fear and is 2 years younger." He heard some typing from the other line. "Of course, that is fine. They can relate and getting the same information at the same time could actually be good for them. But, Ace is sick, and this is a few hours away. I would suggest when it's twelve o'clock Ace gets some antipyretic and a pain relief, before, if possible, a warm bath for half an hour, if not a warm shower, so he's the best he can be when I'm there." Marco was glad for some instructions, feeling he needed guidance for this whole thing. The psychiatrist also said that the other children shouldn't be there, and if possible, Whitebeard should join so he knew what was told. And all that fit, the children weren't home before it was closer to 4:30, and Whitebeard could leave early. He then gave a goodbye to the psychiatrist and felt relieved that things would be fine.

He then called Shanks and said Deuce would drop by today, and that he was welcomed, making the other man glad Eustass could join. Before Marco headed back to Ace, he called Whitebeard, feeling just relieved to hear his voice, and explained Ace's fear and everything, the man going to be home by then, the man giving some encouraging words, making Marco remember why he had first fallen for the man; he was caring and said the right things at the right time. Just the right amount of comfort and support he needed. When they hung up, Marco used a few seconds to just breathe, glad to know things would be fine. When he headed back to the living room, he gave a smile to Vista, Ace still asleep. "Thank you, Vista. The child psychiatrist, Deuce, will come by in a few hours, yoi. Same with Eustass and Shanks." Vista gave a frown at that. "Of course, I love to help. But why? Has anything happened?" Marco sighed, knowing Vista had seen multiple drug overdose deaths in his work and understood it. "Ace has seen multiple people die after drug overdose and puking, yoi. He's terrified he will actually die too. I don't know how to handle it, so Deuce will come to help. I also spoke with Shanks, and Eustass has the same fear, the reason he's dropping by. Oh, and Whitebeard too."

Vista looked understanding as he nodded. "I see. I've seen many children to deceased parents terrified. I never thought Ace was affected." Marco shook his head, telling him he couldn't have known, no one could. But, it made sense; Ace had seen so much that no child, or person, should see. After that, Ace slept for a couple hours, before he woke up and was awake until noon when Marco explained he had spoken to Deuce and he would come by soon, that Eustass and Whitebeard would come home, and the psychiatrist wanted to speak with Ace and Eustass about the fear, Ace not saying much on it.

After the bath and tablets, Ace looked to be back to health, him also telling he felt completely fine. He guessed it was a trick Deuce knew, to make them feel fine for a small bit. It wasn't long before Shanks and Eustass showed up, and Whitebeard right behind. Ace and Eustass seemed glad to be together again, Ace telling how he felt magically fine, but also how Marco had said he was still sick, but would feel fine for a bit by a trick Deuce had. When the psychiatrist showed up, he took a minute to speak to him, Whitebeard, and Shanks first, Vista watching the children.

"So, this is a common fear, not only for someone in their situation and past, I've seen many children being traumatized by movies, documentaries, and so on. It is a legitimate fear, and needs to be tackled like that, not downplayed with adult logic. That would be like me telling you this house will never burn down, even if the fire alarm goes; you're safe. Rather, I would say the truth; there is possibility, a small one, but it needs to have a cause of effect. A house will never burn just because; something sets it off. That's why I want and need you to listen to what I tell them, and keep that up, what I say. They are scared, it's normal and it's fine. And, they might always be scared, the fear will always be there, but they will be better; no panic attack, but scared." That all made sense, and they would listen to every word the man had. "Also," continued the man, "I've had many who decide they know best and decide to show a documentary on alcoholics and drug addicts tackling choking on their puke to show they are safe. And that never works, it just makes it worse. I am sure you won't; you don't seem stupid like that. But, I've had so many do it, so I just always mention it now. It's fine to show when they seek it out, and not, and I mean never, let them watch it alone." All of them nodded, not going to do that, but glad the man clarified.

They then headed to the kids, who were in the living room and watching TV, Deuce sitting down in a chair in front of the couch they sat. He turned the TV off, and them, the adults, went a bit to the side. Deuce then introduced himself to Eustass, telling him who he was and what he did, and he was here to speak with them, Ace telling Eustass that Deuce was amazing and so nice, making the man smile and thank Ace. "So," started Deuce, "A start-up question. Why do you think we throw up?" Both kids sat in silence, before shaking their heads, not knowing. Marco had never thought they didn't know, so just that was an explanation. He thought the kids knew why they threw up. "Well," started Deuce, "The reason we sometimes throw up is because we have something in our stomachs which our body doesn't like, something that might make us more sick. Like, when one has maybe eaten bad food, or gotten food poisoning- bad name, I know- but it just means it's food our body says no to, since it's old or tainted. Having it go through our stomach can make us really sick, and our body is amazing and knows how to fix that. And, that's when we throw up."

Both kids sat and looked at the man with interest as he spoke. "It is not dangerous to throw up; it can actually be worse if you don't, if whatever you have in your tummy- or stomach," Deuce changed the word as both kids chuckled at the word tummy, "goes through your system. And, when you have the flu, like you have, Ace, or some other sickness like the cold, or just a high fever, our bodies can overreact. It's sick and it knows something is wrong, but they can't find out what at once, our bodies need a bit of time to find the bacteria making us sick. And, when you get antipyretic to lower the fever, which is what one should take, our bodies can go; what? I had a fever, but not anymore? That's not right! I'm still sick!" Both kids chuckled again as the man acted as he spoke, and even they had to chuckle. Deuce was really amazing with children.

"So, then our bodies go; Hmm? Let's check." Deuce moved a hand to his head, looking confused. "My head has a headache maybe, but that's because we're working so hard to find out what's wrong." He then moved his hands to his arms and legs. "My limbs feel fine, I haven't hurt them." He then looked down at his body. "I don't have any wounds that hurt or make me sick, so what might it be?" Deuce then gave a look as he got an idea, hands stopping on his stomach. "But what's this? I have food in my stomach! That has to be it! I don't feel it acting up or feeling weird, but what else can be wrong? My fever is gone. So, I will be safe and get rid of it, just in case. And, that's why you throw up." That was actually a really good way of explaining it. Deuce gave a thoughtful look. "But, what actually happens? Our minds tell us to throw up, but what does it actually do? If you move your hands to here, your midriff, and hold around and take a deep breath." The kids mimicked what the man did. "Feel how it gets hard? Like something gets pushed down?" Both kids nodded, and Marco had to admit he even tried himself, just to follow what the man did. "That is something called the diaphragm- doctors love giving complicated names- but it's a muscle that helps us breathe, also the thing that acts up when he gets the hiccups, and also when we throw up; it pushes on the stomach, forcing its contents up."

Deuce then moved his hands to his throat, two fingers pushing lightly beneath the jaw. "And if you put your hands here, just two fingers and push lightly, not so it hurts, but so you can feel your throat slightly vibrating as you breathe." Again, Marco did too, amused to see Shanks also doing it. "And then, swallow," continued Deuce, all of them doing it, the psychiatrist looking thoughtful. "Hmm, what's that? It's like something's moving? Like pushing, as if opening, before closing?" Both kids nodded, seeming interested as they tried again. "That is called the larynx- again, doctors and their names, they love being confusing. But, what that does is really important. It opens so we can breathe, opens the way to our lungs. But, it has one more important job; it opens the way to the stomach too." Marco somewhat knew what that was and how it worked, not really understanding why Deuce brought it up.

Both kids nodded, and Deuce smiled. "And, when you swallow, you feel the larynx opening a way to the stomach, closing the way to the lungs so nothing that shouldn't go there does, which is really important that it doesn't. But, we don't control it; it just acts on how our mind says and what our bodies do. If our mind says swallow, it opens that way, and when we breathe, just the way to the lungs is open, this is also the standard, being open so we can breathe." Deuce gave an amused smile. "And have you heard some adults suddenly start coughing? Without drinking or eating?" Both kids nodded, making Deuce chuckle. "Sometimes, when they are stressed, they try to do both at the same time, and a tiny bit of spit goes the wrong way. It's not dangerous, but is uncomfortable for them, but funny to watch." That was true, Marco had done that a couple times. He felt just as stupid each time. "But, even if that happens, we can't order it around. If we need to breathe, we will, and when we swallow, it makes that safe, and we don't need to think about it, right? It is automatic." Both kids nodded, Deuce nodded back. "That is also something we can't control when we throw up. Just as when we swallow, we can't breathe- which is really annoying with a stuffy nose. It's the same when we throw up; the way to the stomach is open so nothing goes down to the lungs. It feels scary and uncomfortable as we can't control it. But it keeps us from getting our puke down the wrong way. What I mean, is that no, you can't choke on your puke when you throw up, even if you can't breathe for a couple seconds." Didn't the man say that wasn't something he would do? Tell it wasn't possible?

Both kids looked a bit unsure, but Deuce continued. "But, for you, and me, and your guardians, that goes, when you're just sick. But, if you have drunk a lot of alcohol, or taken drugs that make you sluggish and act weird, it also makes that part of the body act weird. But, that is only the case when you have taken something to make that happen." Both kids looked shocked. "Oh!" started Ace, "Like with heroin? Or liquid x? Or Angel Dust?" Marco blinked. Ace knew those? Deuce nodded. "Yes. That is poison to our bodies, and it reacts. So, when our bodies would normally move to have our face to the side or down and open a way for the puke to get out and make sure it doesn't go the wrong way, that doesn't happen. The drugs or alcohol confuse our brain so it can't act accordingly, just halfway. It makes the diaphragm move so the stomach pushes its contents up, and opens the way for it to go out. But, then the drugs make it sluggish, and it closes and goes back to the standard opening to the lungs too early, and that makes one choke on it, and that can be deadly. But, as long as you don't take drugs, or drink way way too much alcohol, that won't happen. Our bodies are too smart. Drugs and alcohol make us stupid."

Ace and Eustass blinked. "Oh," started Ace, "so we won't… die from it? Normally?" Deuce shook his head. "No, never. I can promise you that. No matter how sick you get, how bad your flu is, you will never die or even close to it because you throw up. You need to take something like drugs or a huge amount of alcohol for that to be a possibility." That was a good way of explaining it, telling it could happen, but only when they made it possible. "But," continued Deuce, "that doesn't make it less scary or uncomfortable. You have every right to be scared; it's horrible to throw up, but our bodies do it since we need it. So you will, 9 out of 10 times, feel a lot better afterwards. The rare times you don't, is when you have food poisoning as your stomach will hurt. But, then your guardians will notice something is off and get you the help you need, but you're never in the chance of dying. So, you can be scared when you throw up; many are, even adults, since it's uncomfortable, and it forces you to stop breathing for a few seconds. But, what you should do if you feel nauseous is this; tell an adult you trust- older sibling, guardian, teacher, et cetera- and tell them that you feel nauseous and you don't want to be alone. Having someone you trust there helps you feel safer."

Both kids nodded, seeming to understand it. "However," continued Deuce, "That fear won't just disappear like that. You are scared of it, and that's fine; it's healthy to be scared, but it's even healthier to admit it. But, you will not die from it, that won't happen. Many hate throwing up since it's uncomfortable and scary, even adults. Even I like to have someone close when I'm sick- usually my wife, but I have called mom a couple times." Both kids chuckled, enjoying that Deuce, an adult both seemed to trust, and he knew Ace looked up to, admitted he wanted his mom at times, it seemed to help. "You're sick; you are allowed to whine and be clingy. You are allowed to cry just because you feel awful. You are allowed to ask someone to make you food, bring you drinks, hug you, sleep next to you or in your parent's bed. You're sick, so it's all fine. My brother, when he's sick, he usually lays in bed or on the couch and goes 'Feel bad for me! I'm sick!' And he's a 37 year old man. Be a bit of a hassle and needy, you've deserved it for being sick." Both kids chuckled as they nodded, Deuce putting in humor to make things easier, and it looked to really help.

"Now," started Deuce, clapping his hands on his legs, "I think I need to leave soon. And, you're still sick Ace. I know you feel better, but that's only temporarily from the trick I told Marco. It works, at max, once a day, sometimes only once every two days. So, you'll soon feel sick again, I won't lie about that. But, just breathe and know you are safe, you have parents that really care, siblings that care, friends that care." Ace and Eustass moved to hold hands at the end, them being really good friends. He was sure having them together helped. He then gave a pat to Ace's shoulder. "Get well soon, kiddo. I just need to have a quick word with the adults." Both kids nodded, and when Deuce headed to them, Vista headed to watch them, Marco hearing the two starting to talk about what they've just learned. When they were out in the hallway, Deuce gave a breath. "That went really well. They are smart kids. And as I said, they will still be scared, this won't pass as easy. Some stay afraid for the rest of their lives."

Marco nodded, understanding that. "That's fine, yoi. But that was amazing, and it made sense." He could see Shanks shocked too as he nodded, making Deuce chuckle. "The main reason children are scared is the lack of information. You don't need to tell everything, and you need to be on their level. I don't know how many doctors have called me in to what they call an 'unreasonable hysterical child.' And, when I come and ask what they have done and say, they say they just said what would happen, as they always do. And I ask what, in exact words, that is, they always go like this; 'Pff, the usual. Your leg has a complicated break, you need surgery to put a metal nail into your leg while you sleep, and the nurse comes with the butterfly needle to make you sleep and we'll see you later'." Deuce chuckled with a sigh. "I always want to face palm, and they look shocked when I tell the only thing the child got from that was; Complicated break is dangerous, metal nail hurts bad as a small needle hurts when they touch it, they will sleep and they don't know what that means and sure they will awake in pain when they cut in him, and needle, they will be stuck by a needle, and then everyone will leave them alone. And they wonder why the child is scared?" Deuce shook his head. "So you've done good. And remember that, explain things on their level in detail." Marco nodded, glad Deuce could help, and he could understand a child being scared after being told that by a doctor, just many complicated things.

"But, before I leave," started Deuce, "I would recommend placing them in therapy. Not often, maybe a meeting once a week or every other to three weeks. Their past is hard and they have a lot of fears and habits they need help with. I've seen many children like this, some worse, some better. I've met kids who don't dare sleep in a bed, store food under their bed or in their closet, not eating around others or able to take food that's out. They hide important things as that's what they're used to, trying to be as small as possible. It's not good for them." Marco nodded and gave a sigh. "Ace does that, yoi. Hides food in his closet. And, he can't throw out food without panicking and breaking down, and if he thinks of taking food and actually does it, he breaks down now and then if we notice." Shanks nodded as well. "Eustass didn't sleep in a bed for 5 months, he slept on the windowsill." Deuce nodded. "I guessed. There is probably a whole lot more too, that you don't see. And I want to help with that." Marco nodded. "I agree, yoi. There probably is. Maybe we should." Shanks nodded too, Marco knowing he had had issues with Eustass' habits at times. Deuce smiled. "Just to mention it, as many are stupid; your child being in therapy isn't a reflection on you as parents. It means you have met a wall you have issues with and want to help your child the best way, and that can require help from a specialist; like me."

Marco nodded, having heard others berating parents that had children in therapy. Sometimes it was needed. "And you would be that therapist, yoi? Or do we need to go through our physician?" Deuce chuckled. "I would love to. What often happens with cases like this, is that you get a regular child psychiatrist, and this is a bit above their pay grade. So they would be recommended onwards to me or my co-workers, as we are specialists in abuse victims, trauma from incidents that are embedded into the mind over time, and just more serious things than the regular temper tantrum or small disorders. And, since I am a special specialist, also used in courts, as you know, as an expert witness, I have a lot of free and extra time, since emergency cases happen, so two more patients wouldn't be close to a hassle. I also think a couple of group sessions with them together could be good; they seem to be close." Marco nodded, glad the man could do that. "How much would it cost, yoi? Per session?" Not that he cared about price; they could afford it. He just wanted to know, for their budget. Deuce chuckled. "That is one of the perks of being a special specialist. Your child isn't just being encouraged to go, if he comes to me, he needs it, to be healthy. So, your insurance covers it actually. Each session costs 35 dollars, the deductible." That was amazing, and something he didn't know. But, as he said, Deuce wasn't just a specialist, he was a specialised specialist.

They gave their thanks again, and the man left, telling them to call in a few days, when Ace was better, to schedule a meeting, mentioning the first meeting should be a group one, with both Eustass and Ace. As the man had left, Shanks looked impressed. "He really is amazing with kids. That was amazing to watch." It really was. Ace and Eustass seemed to have enjoyed the entire conversation. Shanks and Eustass stayed for a bit, until Ace seemed to feel ill again, cheeks tinting and he looked tired. Ace needed to relax as he was sick, so the two left when the clock was just shy of 4.

Ace was tired and mostly slept and relaxed on the couch. They had decided to have soup for dinner, since Ace was sick and soup was the best then. Ace didn't eat much, but he at least ate something, which was good. The rest of the day went okay, Ace getting a bit worse as evening came, them deciding to wait a bit with the next dose of antipyretic until they headed to bed, hoping Ace would sleep well. He had seen Ace swallowing at times, seeming somewhat uncomfortable. They had eaten not long ago, and Ace has already had an upset stomach and thrown up, so it wouldn't be surprising if it happened again, or if Ace felt nauseous. But, he didn't want to ask, hoping Ace would bring it up, unless Marco saw signs of Ace being really uncomfortable or scared.

When bedtime came, Ace just took a quick shower to rid some of the cold sweat before he went into his pyjamas to be as comfortable as he could. As Ace was now ready for bed, having taken some antipyretic not too long ago, Ace's fever had thankfully gone a bit down, but it was still high, making him sigh. "102, yoi. You're staying home tomorrow too." He always checked in the evening, and if it was like this, he would let Ace sleep out tomorrow, not waking him to see if he was better before they left for school. "...Could…" Marco moved a hand to Ace's shoulder. "What, Ace?" Ace looked down, giving a sigh. "Can… I mean… I don't want to sleep alone…" Marco gave a comforting smile as he crouched down, a hand on Ace's leg. "And that's fine, yoi. You're sick, and it's just as Deuce said; you're allowed to ask about anything. Now, would you want me to sleep here with you, or would you join me and Whitebeard in our bed?" Ace moved his head up and blinked at him. "I- I can sleep in your bed?" He at least knew what Ace wanted. "Yes, yoi. You're sick, and even we want you close. All of our children have slept in our bed while sick, even Curiel and Vista, no matter if they deny it now."

Ace gave a small shy smile as he nodded, and Marco moved his hand to Ace's cheek. "But, before we go, I need to ask a question. Do you feel nauseous, yoi? And, before you answer, the reason I'm asking is if you are, you will lie at my side of the bed, close to a bucket in case. Suddenly, you can wake up sick. And if you don't, you will get the king spot between me and Whitebeard." All of his children loved to lie between them, making them feel special for an evening, to get special treatment. Ace gave a small nod. "No… but not no… not yes either... I don't know." Marco smiled at his son. "Do you feel it acting a bit up? Just a bit uncomfortable, yoi?" Ace gave a small nod, looking unsure. He moved a hand to Ace's head. "It's fine, yoi. You can sleep between us then. As long as you don't feel like you need to be sick, it's fine. We still have the bucket in case though." Ace nodded and looked glad.

They then headed to his and Whitebeard's room, the man already having turned into bed, giving a smile when he came into the room with Ace. "Hello, son. Are you joining us for the night?" Ace gave a small nod, which had Marco chuckle. "His fever is still high, yoi. He's staying home tomorrow too." Whitebeard gave a chuckle, moving a bit to the side. "Well, we have a tradition to keep. Come and get comfortable." Ace slowly moved in the bed and laid down, seeming unsure, but also comfortable. This was new for Ace and this day had been tough for Ace, not only the fear from the fear of being sick, but also getting through it and the meeting with Deuce. When Marco also laid down, Ace lying in the middle and not cuddling against them, which all his other children did, especially Haruta and Namur- although Namur had stopped sleeping in their bed, getting too old now, he has said. It also didn't take long for Ace to fall asleep, looking relaxed.

"Is he feeling better?" Marco gave a nod to his significant other. "He is, yoi. But, his fever is still high and his stomach is a bit upset." Whitebeard gave a nod and Marco moved to stroke Ace's head, fingers threading through his hair. "I wonder what he has seen, yoi. What horrible things he has seen, how many traumas and fears does he have?" Whitebeard moved a hand to his, holding it. "And no matter what or how many, we are here to help him through it." They would do that, and Marco was glad Deuce offered to be their therapist, Ace was fond of the man, and he had a feeling Eustass was too. The man was excellent in how he spoke with children.

The next few days went by fine. Ace didn't throw up more, but he was somewhat nauseous here and there, and Marco did his best to be there for Ace during those periods. It was clear that Ace was terrified, which he got based on what he had seen before. But no matter what, they would help Ace through everything that they were faced with. When Ace was better, it was back to school, which the kid seemed glad about. Ace seemed to actually enjoy school. But he got that, it was a place to be for him, aside from being out on the street, so Marco got it. It was a week later that they got an appointment at the doctor. Marco did call the doctor the day before and explained about Ace, how he had been a street child, and they had just adopted him. The doctor seemed glad to get to know that info, and when they had the appointment the next day, being at Dr Biggie's, their family doctor. When they got there the next day, Whitebeard with them, the doctor looked Ace over, asking them questions, before they were asked to leave for a bit, so the doctor could speak to Ace in private, which they let him do. He just hoped his child was healthy.

Ace swallowed when Marco and Whitebeard left the room. He didn't like it with strangers. The man, doctor, then checked him over again, asking him questions. "Does it hurt to breathe?" Ace gave an unsure sound. "At times… But it isn't too bad. Only when I run too much." The doctor nodded. "And these scars? Where are they from?" The doctor was tracing a scar he had on his arm, a deep slash he had gotten by a rival gang when he was on the streets. "Some man… he kind of stabbed me. But it was long ago! Not Marco or Whitebeard!" The doctor nodded. "I see that. It is an old injury. I just wondered about it." The doctor then moved to sit down at his chair again, before he looked at him. "Ace, I need a word with your guardians, and I would like it if you could wait in the nurse room with the nurse while I speak to them, okay?" Ace blinked, but nodded. He was still unsure why the doctor had sent Marco and Whitebeard away, but he was nice. He was then followed out the door, before to a sort of backroom, a couple nurses there who started a chat up with him, the doctor leaving. He hoped nothing bad would happen, or something was wrong with him. He didn't want to be a liability for Marco and Whitebeard, he really liked it with them.

-x-

Marco gave a breath as they were called back into the doctor's office by the secretary, Marco not sure what to think as Dr Biggie has never sent them out before, never when they had any of their other children here. He could see Whitebeard worried too, but kept his calm, just as he needed to do too.

When they got into the doctor's office, Marco felt worried when Ace wasn't there. "Please sit down, Ace is just with some colleagues." Again, Marco didn't like this. This had never happened before. "Is anything wrong with Ace, yoi?" He hoped not, his mind racing he was sick, or had a chronic sickness or something. The doctor held a hand up, calming them down. "Now, I would just like to start this off by saying this; had I not known young Ace was adopted by you not long ago, that he had been a street child, Child Protective Services would have been here. He has some past injuries and scars no child should have, but I know he got this before he got to you, and young Ace seems to like you." Marco nodded, moving a hand to hold onto Whitebeard's, sure something was wrong. He was glad Dr Biggie hadn't called CPS, and told them how things were. He was now glad he had called yesterday to tell about Ace.

"Okay, yoi. What- is he injured? Has he any damage, yoi?" Dr Biggie sighed. "He shows signs of malnourishment, many different scars and traumas to his body. But, what I find the most worrisome is his lungs. They are damaged, most likely from a bad case of pneumonia when he was younger. His lungs have scarring that makes him more vulnerable to getting the flu, and it turning into pneumonia, as well as he can have issues running or otherwise needing to use his lungs more than usual, like with running, swimming, and all that." Marco had hoped Ace didn't have any damage, but he did, and it was a reason he was prone to getting the flu. "Is there anything we can do, yoi?" Dr Biggie nodded. "Yes. I will give you some tablets and an inhaler he needs to use for a couple weeks, to hopefully make his lungs grow and heal somewhat, and to prevent further damage. He will also need to get a flu shot every half year, to make him more resistant to it. He can, and probably will, still get the flu or a cold, but it won't be as bad, and it'll have a lower chance of turning into pneumonia."

Both him and Whitebeard nodded, Marco glad they could do something to help. "The inhaler," continued the doctor, "Will make his lungs a bit tingly for an hour after using it, which is normal. But, I have heard about it causing small panic attacks, and running or other exhausting things can make him feel like he's being choked. All he needs to do is calm down, sit and relax, and breathe calmly. He will be fine and nothing will happen to actually cause harm as long as he keeps him calm. A small panic attack is fine, but you should always be around him for an hour after using the inhaler." Marco nodded, taking all the information in. "Should he show signs that he's reacting to the inhaler- coughing, weezing, shortness of breath- call in. It's better to be sure." Marco nodded, glad Ace would get help.

Dr Biggie moved to write something on his computer. "Now. I will write a report as I am a mandatory reporter but I will mention all the sides, that he has just been adopted, and every injury I am concerned about happened before he was adopted. But, there is a chance the CPS will call you or show up for a surprise meeting to see how young Ace is. But, they can't show up at his school, or in other ways, take him based on this report- I read what has happened with the CPS before- and if anything happens, I will support you fully." That had Marco glad. He didn't want to deal with CPS more, and he was sure Ace felt the same. Biggie then clapped his hands. "Well, that was all I had to say. The prescription to the medication is delivered electronically to the pharmacy, and you should start today, follow the instructions on the package. Now, let's go get Ace." Marco and Whitebeard nodded, before the doctor went through a couple doors, before Ace came back with him. Ace seemed glad to see them again, moving to hold his hand, grasping it, probably worried. When they left a minute later and they had paid and was heading to their car, Ace spoke up. "What did the doctor want to speak with you about? Did I say anything wrong?" Marco shook his head. "No, you didn't say anything wrong. He mentioned you have some scarring on your lungs, and we need some medication for it, yoi. That's why you often get the flu and feel bad." Ace nodded slowly. "Okay. I always wondered why I got the flu more often than the others. I hope it won't be a hassle." Marco shook his head again. "No, it won't be. We just need some medication and you will feel better." Ace blinked at him. "R-really? I would like to feel better." Marco nodded, looking at his son. "Why didn't you tell us you felt bad?" Ace shrugged. "I forgot about it. I'm used to it." That was probably true. But things had changed and Ace was their son now.

The next few weeks went by fine. Ace taking his medication and inhaler. And, he said he felt much better already. When they had a check up meeting with the doctor a month later, he said Ace's lungs were already looking better, and to keep the treatment up for another month, and then they could start to do it every other day instead of every day. And do that for a few weeks, before they moved to do it once a week, which would do for some months. If Ace felt worse at days, he was allowed to use the inhaler and take an extra dose. It didn't happen that Ace needed an extra dose, or he didn't tell them at least, and he never saw Ace having issues. But then again, they hadn't seen it before either.

It was a week later that Marco moved to the door when there was a knock, not sure who would visit them. They didn't know anyone who would come unannounced. When he opened the door, he was me with an unfamiliar man, who moved to show identification. "Hi, I'm Franky, I'm with Child Protective Services. We got a note in and I'm here to check up on it, and a follow up from an earlier case. if you say no, which you can, the cops will be involved." Marco nodded. "Are you here to just see, or to take Ace, yoi?" The man, Franky, blinked. "Oh no, take him? I can't do that. I'm just here to see how his living conditions is and maybe speak to him if possible." That had Marco let out a relieved breath. "That's good. And you're welcomed in. I'm not sure Ace wants to speak with you though, yoi. We've had a bad run in with you guys." Franky nodded. "I read that, and I do understand that. Why don't we start by having a chat, before I look around? If that's okay." Marco nodded. "That's fine. Let's go to the kitchen, I believe my fiance is there, you probably want to speak with him too." Franky nodded, and they headed inside. Whitebeard didn't seem too happy to hear the CPS was here, but he tackled it fine. The man then asked general questions about Ace, if they fed him, if he had a room and bed, and things like that, which they all answered and the man seemed happy, before he made a motion to the hall. "Can I see Ace's room?" Marco nodded. "You can, yoi. Ace is there, so let me just tell him what's happening." The man nodded, and Marco headed up to Ace, telling the CPS was here, making him look worried, which had Marco clarify. "He's not here to take you, but just ask questions, yoi." It had Ace seem more relieved, but still nervous, which Marco got. He then went down and invited Franky up to Ace's room.

When they got to Ace's room, Ace was sitting in his bed, looking worried. Franky however, made his way over, standing a bit away as he reached his hand out. "Hi, I'm Franky. I'm just here to ask some questions, then I will leave, alone." Ace gave a small nod, moving to shake Franky's hand. "Hi, I'm Ace. What do you want to ask about?" Franky smiled. "I just want to ask if you're happy here? And is this your room? it looks cozy." Ace blinked. "Y-yeah. This is my room. It's pretty big. But Marco says it's my room alone, we all have rooms here." Franky nodded. "That's good to hear. What do you like the most here?" Ace let out an unsure sound. "Um, I like how there's always food and I have my room. Oh! And I got a fridge! My own! I really like that! I also like how Marco and Whitebeard are always here, or some of the older ones. It's nice here." Franky nodded. "That sounds lovely. Well, that's all I need. Have a good day, Ace. I will just have a quick chat with your guardians." Ace blinked. "Um, did I say anything wrong? Why do you need to speak with them?" Franky shook his head. "You said nothing wrong. It's mandatory I speak with them. I am sure they can come up after I have spoken with them." That had Ace nod and seem somewhat calmed, but he still had this look he couldn't identify in his eyes. He would be sure to check on Ace after this.

When they got back down to the living room, shooing Thatch away so they could speak, Franky gave a smile. "Everything seems fine. I have no concern and I believe this will be the last you hear from us about Ace. Or I hope so." Marco nodded, shaking the man's hand before he left, heading out with a smile. Marco was glad it went by fine. As Franky was gone, Marco making sure the car went away, he headed up to Ace, knocking on his door before he opened it. "Ace, are you okay?" When he got inside the room, Ace gave a mixed look to him. "Is- is he gone?" Marco nodded. "He is." Ace let out a breath, before he moved a hand to dry tears as thy suddenly fell, making Marco move over concerned. "Hey, Ace, what is it?" Ace let out a small sob. "I was so scared! I was scared he would take me again!" Marco shook his head, moving to hug Ace. "Oh no, honey. He wasn't going to take you. I wouldn't have allowed it." Ace noded, moving to hug him back, sobbing into his shirt, obviously really upset. "You're safe here, Ace. I'm proud you spoke with him, that you answered his questions so well." Marco said as he stroked Ace on his back, comforting Ace.

Ace cried for a few minutes, before he seemed to gather himself, giving a few hulks as he moved away, hands drying away tears. As Ace seemed better, Marco clapped Ace on his shoulder. "You did amazing, Ace. I am so proud of you. And I'm glad you like it here and feel comfortable." Acce nodded, giving a sniffle. "I do like it here. You are all so kind and I am still not used to everything." Marco nodded. "I know, but we have all the time we need to get you comfortable." Ace nodded. "Yeah. Thanks, for being here." Marco shook his head. "We're here to comfort you and help you through things. That's our job as your guardians and parents." Ace nodded, not saying anything, and he didn't need to either. Marco was just glad Ace felt better. He got it was an upsetting thing to get visited by the CPS again. He sat with Ace for a bit, before he headed down to the living room, Ace joining him. It was soon dinner anyhow.

the next weeks after that also went fine. Ace had started therapy with Deuce, and that was going well as well. Deuce said he would have a chat with him and Whitebeard after half a year, when he also knew Ace more. And say his mind on things, which sounded to be good. Ace had been sick one more time, and this time, he had said it in the morning, that he felt bad, and he had been home for that week. He wasn't nauseous sick, which was good, just the general flu, not as bad as last time, he had a feeling the medication they got from their doctor had helped. He was glad things were going fine.

-x-

Ace fiddled with his fingers, sitting in Deuce's office, having a session now. He hadn't been here for 3 weeks, and a lot had happened during those three weeks.

"So Ace, something seems to be bothering you." Started Deuce, making Ace take a breath. He was probably easy to read; he was nervous. "It's just… We've started with this thing called home-ed at school, and we first did the how to do a dishwasher, or the laundry cleaning machine, and changing of lightbulb and such…" Deuce gave a nod. "That sounds nice. Is there something you're doing now that is bothering you?" Ace gave a small nod. He knew he needed to tell someone, he was just scared Marco or Whitebeard would be mad at him; school was important to them. "It's just- we've started with cooking, which will be the main thing according to the teacher… and… it's just so much food that goes to waste! And no one cares! They fill up bucket after bucket of food and don't even care as all the edible food go to waste and when I try and tell against it or use it, the teacher gets mad at me and forces me to clean and throw away the leftovers, and I really don't like it and it just is so wrong and the teacher just get mad at me and-"

Ace stopped when a hand landed on his leg, making him look up at Deuce who had a calm look, Ace now feeling himself breathing hard. "Relax, Ace. It's okay. What does the teacher tell you?" Ace took a breath as he tried to gather his voice, already feeling the burning sensation in his eyes. "She- she tells me it's just food and I shouldn't care about it, and tells me I'm a horrible student that doesn't follow her orders… and this one time I was supposed to throw out some lasagna thing, I felt I couldn't and just froze as I had made it, but had forgotten some extra cheese- I don't really like cheese- and I just felt torn and confused and… miserable… so the teacher yelled and I started crying… and she told me I'm just a… crybaby... and made me sit in the corner alone while she threw it out.. I didn't get any food that day…" Ace moved a hand to his face and wiped some tears away, really hating that class and teacher. "I- I've started to… skip that class. And the teacher said she would call Marco if I skipped another lesson, and I know school is really important, but I don't like anything with that class."

He took a tissue Deuce held out for him, sniffing as tears continued to fall from his eyes and just sad and scared about this whole thing, feeling miserable. Deuce moved his hand comfortingly on his leg. "That teacher doesn't sound like a good one. No one should speak or act like that to anyone. And I know you have issues with food, so that must have been horrible for you." Ace nodded, his sight blurry as he was emotional and scared, but glad Deuce seemed to understand. "Y-yeah. And I know I should have told Marco or Whitebeard… I just know school is something they think is really important…" Deuce gave a smile to him. "Listen, I get that, but you need to tell this to Marco or Whitebeard. Not only because it's bothering you, but because that teacher is certainly not a good one, and you should not be miserable, especially not berated for being miserable. I am sure your feelings come before school." Ace sniffed, not really sure what to think. He still remembers how mad Marco had been after the time Robin had let him stay out of class after the breakdown. Marco had apologized, but it was clear school was important. He didn't want to seem weak and useless, or make Marco or Whitebeard mad.

Deuce gave a breath. "Okay. When is the next lesson?" Ace sniffed. "Today. It starts at 2pm." It was still in the morning, the clock just past 9am, so he was already really worried for school and the teacher, knowing he needed to attend and he really didn't want that, and if he skipped Marco would be really mad too. Deuce gave a nod. "Okay. When was the last time you had a lesson?" Ace gave an unsure breath. He should tell, right? Deuce was nice. "...it was three days ago… she took me out of class to tell me she would call Marco if I didn't show up… And she said she hoped I wouldn't show, so she could tell Marco what a lousy student I was and that I didn't deserve to go to school since I couldn't follow what i was told… and if I told Marco why, he wouldn't believe me and just make him mad..." Ace didn't know why, but it had really gotten to him, making him feel… useless. Deuce had a frown as he looked concerned. "Who followed you here today?" Ace blinked, sniffing as he used the tissue to wipe some more tears away, feeling his voice was raspy. "Um, Jozu did, but Marco's going to be picking me up." Deuce gave a nod. "That's good. I know food is a hard topic, so it is no wonder you have issues with the home-ed, and you need to tell why to Marco. I promise he will understand. It's clear you're really upset." Ace gave a nod, trying to get himself so stop crying. This had really been a lot on his mind, and it felt good to tell, to get it out.

Deuce moved his hand to his shoulder. "You remember my secretary, Mika, right?" Ace nodded. "Y-yeah, she's nice." He had been with the secretary now and then when Deuce speaked to Marco and Whitebeard. Deuce smiled. "You should tell Marco this, and if you want, I can speak with him first, while you are with Mika, and then come in after. Nonetheless, I am sure Marco will be more worried about you, than the fact you've skipped home-ed, especially when he gets to know why." Ace gave a nod, wanting that. He knew Deuce could explain this better than him, and if Marco got angry, Deuce could make him calm down. Ace really didn't like home-ed. Deuce then moved his hand comfortably on his shoulder. "And no matter what, you have nothing to be nervous or feel bad about; you've done nothing wrong. The teacher should have been more understanding, not judging and derogatory like that."

Ace gave a nod, feeling tears still making their way down his face. It felt good to know he hadn't done anything wrong. Deuce gave a smile. "Let's head to the breakroom and I will get Mika. Even if Marco isn't here yet, I think you need to relax for a bit too." Ace would like that, and nodded, following Deuce to the breakroom, before the man left for a short minute, before Mika arrived with a smile. "Hi, Ace. We got some new picture books recently, many with small games. Want to join me check them out? I haven't had the time." Ace nodded. That sounded really fun, and he was glad the woman didn't comment or seem to care he was still sort of crying. He really liked Mika; she was nice.

Marco gave a breath, having just arrived at the waiting room at the psychiatrist floor. He had shared a few short words with Jozu before the man needed to leave to make it to work. They always made sure they had the time to follow Ace here, as that was important, and was glad for all the help everyone gave. Marco liked it best to be here himself, but there had been an important morning meeting, so he couldn't take Ace here, but he could pick him up and take him to school. They might take a stop to eat some ice cream, Ace sometimes seeming tired after his sessions, which he got; it was a lot emotionally for Ace. Marco also hoped Ace would speak with Deuce about whatever it was that had been bothering him the last weeks, especially the last days. He had been acting nervous and unsure, almost seeming scared. He hoped Ace would feel better and be back to more normal, he didn't like Ace acting like this.

He had just gotten a few pages into a magazine when the door into the office opened, making him frown. Ace was supposed to be in the session for at least 15-20 minutes more. He felt worried when only Deuce stood in the door opening. "Ah, Mr Fishback, I'm glad you've arrived. If you could come inside, I would like to have a chat." Marco had a feeling something was wrong, especially when Ace wasn't in the room, Deuce motioning for him to take a seat on a chair close to the one Deuce had, just on the other side of a small table, the chair Ace usually used empty and close to the chair Deuce was in. Deuce gave a breath. "So, I just had a conversation with Ace about school, which upset him rather much. It seems like they have started with something called home-ed." Marco nodded, not really sure what that had to do with this. "Yes, yoi. Thatch told them about 2 months ago and he at least seems to enjoy it. They have separated the class, so Thatch and Ace aren't together during the class. I hope nothing has happened in it, Thatch says good things, aside from the somewhat stern teacher."

Deuce nodded. "Ah, yes. That they are separated make it more understandable why you haven't been alerted to this thing." Marco blinked, now sure something was up with that class. "Is there something wrong with it? The teacher sounds stern, but only that, yoi. Thatch loves the food they make now." Deuce nodded. "I can imagine he does; from what Ace says, Thatch seems to enjoy cooking. Anyhow, the teacher is stern and seems to want things her way, or no way. So when Ace noticed how much food goes to waste, he spoke up, much to the displeasure of the teacher. And even when Ace made a perfectly fine dish, the teacher felt that he used too little cheese- a preference Ace has- and was therefore forced to throw it out, more often than not being forced to throw food out and sit in a corner, not getting any food. All because he views food in a different manner than the teacher; that it's not something you always have at your disposal." Marco moved a hand to his face. It was no wonder Ace had been acting a bit off, if that was how things had been for Ace in that class. Ace still had a lot of issues with food, especially throwing it out, still having the occasional breakdown. And, his food stash had been bigger in quantity, so this must be why.

Deuce gave a sigh. "So, I hope you can understand why Ace has been skipping that class; he couldn't take it. The teacher also, in what I would label as extortion, emotional extortion to be specific, told Ace she would call you and tell, and I quote; 'she could tell you what a lousy student Ace was and that Ace didn't deserve to go to school since he couldn't follow what he was told'. Also adding that if he told you why he had skipped the class, you wouldn't believe him and be mad. She was hoping Ace would skip class so she could call you, and in her words, make you mad at Ace. It must have gotten to Ace somehow, as he seem worried you will be mad." Marco would take a call to the school as soon as he was done here, and tell how that teacher was not a good one to have as a teacher. "I see, yoi. It makes sense; he has been acting nervous. And his food stash, it's been larger." Deuce nodded. "I can imagine. It would make him react, badly, to be around someone who played on some of his biggest fears like that. He's also with my secretary, Mika, as this must have been weighing down on him; he seems emotional and in a way, exhausted. I would actually advise to let him stay home today; I think he needs that, especially as he's worried for your reaction, and when you will not react as the teacher said, obviously, I think it will bring down some walls that Ace has put up; he's prepared for you to be mad. I believe he will be in need of you to be close today. I also want him back soon, I'm thinking Monday, early meeting." Marco felt he should have noticed this, and felt bad.

Marco gave a nod as he looked at the psychiatrist. "I will of course keep him home today, yoi. What do you think about tomorrow?" It was Thursday, and if Deuce meant it would be good to keep him home tomorrow too, to relax for the rest of the week, that was fine for him. Ace was always the first priority before school; all his children were. Deuce hummed. "Play it by ear. If you feel or think he still is upset tomorrow, I will say yes. He could use some days to relax, the last week, or weeks, must have been hard for him." Marco nodded. It must have been, and he would call and tell the principal about this home-ed teacher. The principal was thankfully a person that knew their judgement was good, and it meant a lot since they were one of the main supporters of the school. He would also be sure to ask to have Ace and Thatch together in classes, no matter what, so if anything close to this happened again, which he hoped not, he knew Thatch would always support and stand by Ace.

Marco gave a breath. "I need to take a couple phone calls, yoi. Is it okay for Ace to be with Mika or you while I do so?" Deuce chuckled. "Mika is actually a psychiatric student; she loves it when she can have time with my patients, so it's not a worry. I also don't have any appointments before noon after Ace. Make your calls and then we can continue our chat, as I want a few words in before you go pick up Ace." Marco nodded, glad Deuce was understanding and a really amazing psychiatrist. Marco went out to the waiting room and called Whitebeard first, just to tell he wouldn't be in today, and possibly tomorrow too, giving a rough explanation why, with a promise to explain everything later. He could also hear Whitebeard sounded furious on the teacher based on his voice, and Marco said he would call in to the school as soon as they had spoken now, making the man glad.

As that was fixed, he first called Miss Robin, telling Ace would be home for today, and possibly tomorrow. When the teacher asked for what reason, Marco said there had been some emotional happenings that caused Ace's psychiatrist to suggest keeping Ace home, and if Ace would need a note on it, Marco would get it. The teacher had just said it was fine, but always liked to have a reason, in case someone was sick, as it could spread. While he also had the teacher on the line, he decided to ask a small question about this home-ed teacher, just if she knew anything about the teacher. He could hear the teacher having a condescending tone as she spoke. "Miss Kalifa. I don't like her, personally, something about her that just seems odd. Many of the kids don't like her; she's too old school and stern, never letting the children give an input, and just mean. Don't tell anyone I said this. I also hope she's not one of the reasons Ace stays home." Marco sighed. "I can't disclose that, yoi. I am, however, going to give a call to the principal in a minute." Robin chuckled. "I see. Let me speak to some of my students that seem to not like this Miss Kalifa." Robin was a smart woman who caught on quickly. "I would appreciate it. Goodbye, Miss Robin, yoi." The woman gave a goodbye and Marco was glad to know Ace wasn't the only one who had issues with the home-ed teacher; even Miss Robin didn't like her. Although for Ace, it was more on an emotional and serious level.

He then made a call to the principal, telling him that his son, Ace, would be home because of an emotional crisis, caused by one of the teachers there; the home-ed teacher, Miss Kalifa. Also adding that Deuce, a specialized psychiatrist, was the one to alert him to this issue, telling what Ace had told Deuce, how she had been degrading and even using things that was obvious to see was emotional and hurtful to Ace on and on, even how she had hoped Ace would skip class so she could call him and tell lies; how Deuce had called it emotional extortion, and it had really shaken his son up, to the point where Deuce was worried of his emotional state, and even psychological state.

The principal was quick to apologize and said he would look in to the matter, going to ask the other teachers of they heard any complaints or had any themselves, also asking if this psychiatrist could give him a call, so the principal had someone with a relevant education to speak for Ace if the principal seemed it was right to let the teacher go. It made him glad to hear that the principal took him seriously. The principal then apologized for all of this and would contact him again tomorrow, after hearing a bit around, and hoping Ace would be fine, and if he could do anything to help, to just ask him. The principal didn't want Marco against him, which was a good decision. Nothing meant more to him than his children, and if needed, he would fight to keep them happy. He gave somewhat of a stern goodbye to the principal, hoping the man would see what this teacher was like. It felt good that Miss Robin would gather more info, so she had some when the principal asks her.

As Marco had hung up, he gave a sigh as he went back to the office Deuce was waiting at, the man giving a smile to him. "I hope it went well. I peeked at what Ace and Mika are doing, and they are checking some psychiatric picture books out, seeming to have fun." Marco nodded, glad Ace seemed okay. "It went fine, yoi. The principal of the school would like a call from you if possible; so he has the means to let the teacher go if needed." Deuce chuckled. "Oh, I would love to make that call." Deuce was a good man and a great help in all of this; he was glad they had met him and gotten him as Ace's psychiatrist. "Good to hear. You said you wanted some words with me before I got Ace, yoi?"

Deuce nodded. "Yes. This is obviously something that has taken a toll on Ace, both because of how unprofessional and malicious the teacher was, but also how this is already a deep fear Ace has, and because of that, when a fear he has built up; that you will be mad, is untrue, might as I said, bring down some walls. That can be tough, for everyone, both for Ace and you. The reaction might come as soon as you get Ace, or in the car on your way home, or during the night, or tomorrow. But, it will happen, and you need, no matter how hard it will be, stay strong in that period, and it usually happens in the first 2 days. A mother I had before said it was like watching her daughter's seams that kept her together just ripped, and she fell apart. Which I would say is a good wording for it. It can happen while he's eating, playing, reading, watching TV, sleeping, or anything, I don't know when. But I know it will happen. Some react by anger as they are scared and confused, some react by relief as they feel relieved and just let it out and break down, some also accompanied with a panic attack. I think Ace falls more into the relief and/or panic side, but I don't know for sure. What Ace needs when that happens, is you or Whitebeard there, and keep strong, help him through it. I know many parents stay strong through it, and the second they're a door apart, they themselves fall down as it takes a toll on your mind and energy. That being said, yes, I am a child psychiatrist, but that doesn't mean I don't help adults. I have many parents I help, and I am a 24 hour psychiatrist, and many have called me in the middle of the night. There is no shame to do that. If you feel the need, just call, I'm here. It also often helps to know I am here if needed, even for you, Whitebeard, or any of the older siblings. Also, should the reaction come when he's around the younger ones, remove them, not Ace. If you are in a store, go to the bathroom or just barge into an employee room and bark at everyone to leave. If you are in the car, stop, even if you're in the middle of a highway; should any cop try to say anything, they can answer to me."

Deuce gave a breath and gave a smile to him. "I hope I didn't scare you with that, it's just something I like to warn about." Marco nodded. "It's fine, yoi. I'm glad you did. Why would this thing make such a big reaction happen?" Deuce hummed. "I know food is a fear that is deeply embedded in Ace, and you probably do yourself. This entire thing here is based on that fear; the fear of not getting food, to see food being thrown away in front of him and then going hungry. All of those fears have come forth in a forced way, and when he now sees it's just lies a teacher said, makes the walls he put up come down, the walls he placed to keep himself going. The teacher scratched at those walls, making them more vulnerable to fall. It's basically just how the mind works. There is now a very specific cause that his fears have become stronger, and you will completely eliminate that fear and reassure everything is fine; the teacher was wrong. Think of it like ripples in the water; it moves and makes everything move and grow bigger, all from a single little pebble."

Marco nodded. "I see, that makes sense, yoi. I will keep the offer I can call in mind, as well as update Whitebeard." Deuce nodded. "Glad I didn't scare you off. Should we get Ace?" Marco nodded as he stood up, heading after Deuce to what was the break room, seeing Ace sitting on a couch with Mika, both looking at some book. As soon as they came into the room, both Ace and Mika looked at him, Marco seeing how Ace's eyes were puffy and red, as well as faint tear marks on his face. He also saw Ace's face get a look of fear when he saw him, making Marco give the best calm and soft look he could with a smile, heading over to the pair. "What are you two doing, yoi?" He saw Mika giving Ace time to answer, before she answered instead when Ace didn't. "We're looking at some books; we just got some new ones with some games. Ace is a quick learner." Marco smiled as he moved to sit down next to Ace, looking at the book, seeing it had small tasks in it. "Yes, he is, yoi. He's a smart kid, making me so proud." He said as he moved to give his son a hug with an arm. He really was proud of Ace, and glad he trusted Deuce, so he was told about this to someone.

Mika gave a chuckle, closing the book. "This was fun, Ace. Maybe we can repeat this another time. You and Marco should get on with your day." Ace gave a nod to the woman. "I would like that." Deuce chuckled. "Good you got to check those books out, I hope they were nice. We will see each other on Monday again, Ace." Ace blinked. "So soon? I don't mind, but it's usually a couple weeks in between." Deuce nodded. "I know. But right now, I want you back so I can hear how you are; this week, or weeks, have been hard on you." Ace gave a small nod. "...okay. I look forward to it; it's nice here." Deuce smiled. "Good to hear. I like that those who come here feel comfortable. See you next week, Ace." Ace smiled as he stood up, Marco doing the same. "We will. Have a nice weekend." Deuce smiled. "Always so courteous. See you later, Ace, Marco." Marco gave a nod in return, before he moved to the exit with Ace beside him, Ace moving to hold his hand as they got out to the hall and to the elevator down.

As the doors to the elevator doors closed, he felt Ace clutching his hand a bit. "Marco?" Marco gave a hum. "Yes, Ace?" Ace didn't answer right away, Marco feeling Ace's hand clutch his hand as if nervous. "Are…. are you mad at me?" Marco looked down at his son, who was looking down. "No, Ace, no. I am not mad at you, yoi. Why do you think I am?" Ace gave a small sound. "Because… I skipped class…" Marco moved to crouch down, bringing a hand to be on Ace's cheek so Ace looked at him, Marco seeing worried and scared eyes. "No, Ace, I am not mad about that, yoi. That teacher was acting way out of her way, making you miserable. You had every right to skip that class. I just wished I had picked up how miserable you must have been before. And I will never believe a teacher before my children, yoi. I will always believe you. Nothing is more important than you. You can tell me anything and I will always support and believe you."

Ace's eyes moved a bit around, as if searching for something in his face, before he nodded, not saying anything. Marco moved his hand to Ace's head and through his hair. "You're my most precious thing Ace, you and all my children, yoi. Now, let's head home and relax." Ace blinked at him. "Home? What about school?" Marco nodded. "Home, yoi. It's clear you're tired, Ace. Which I get; these weeks must have been horrible, all those lies that teacher told you. You need to relax too, and you're so much more important than school; your happiness and health is my first priority." Ace gave a nod, and Marco gave a smile as he stood back up, the elevator doors opening as they headed out to the car, before starting the drive home.

Ace didn't say anything on the drive home, mostly looking out the passenger window. When they got home, no one was there, which Marco knew. The first one home would be Curiel, who would be back in just a few hours, as he had the early morning shift, which started 4 o'clock in the morning. Curiel enjoyed it though, even though it started in the dead of the morning. As they got into the house, they went to the living room and Marco put the TV on some comedy show as Ace sat down on the couch. "Want some snacks, yoi? Or food?" Ace seemed to be thinking for a second, before he nodded. "Maybe a snack? I'm not that hungry." Marco nodded and headed to the kitchen, deciding to make some sandwiches; Ace seemed to like them. And as he started, he decided he still felt really annoyed with this teacher and might try and get a favor in, taking his phone out and calling a number he had been calling a lot the last months.

"Marco! Always enjoyable when you call. To what do I owe the pleasure of your call this fine morning?" Said Shanks as enthusiastic as normal, making Marco give a breath. "We're not having the best morning here, yoi. I need a favor." He heard a hum on the line. "Oh, is anything wrong? What's the favor? I can see what I can do." Marco sighed. "There is this new teacher at Ace's school, home-ed teacher, a miss Kalifa or something. Could you run a check on her? We just had a meeting with Deuce, and Ace told she has been everything but friendly or nice, actually down right malicious, yoi. Deuce said she was using emotional extortion on Ace, and Deuce is really worried for Ace and how it has affected him; he's staying home for the week now."

When Shanks spoke again, he could hear the man having a frown. "That doesn't sound good. I'll do a quick check on her and call if anything seems sketchy. Principal been notified?" Marco nodded. "Called him earlier, he's going to hear around. Ace's teacher doesn't like her either, as well as many of the kids, yoi." He heard a Shanks giving a breath. "That's good. Since Ace is home, and Eustass is still not enrolled in school, wanna hang out with the kids later today or tomorrow?" That did sound like a good idea, and Ace loved every time he could be with Eustass. "Let me come back to that, yoi. I just want to make sure Ace is fine first." Shanks chuckled. "No problemo. I'll check on this teacher and call you when I get something or nothing." Marco gave a breath, glad Shanks was helpful.

He gave a thanks to the man before he hung up, continuing to make a couple sandwiched, before going back out to the living room and sitting down next to Ace on the couch with a plate and couple glasses with juice, giving a hum when he saw Ace had changed the program. "Dr Phil, yoi?" Ace nodded. "Yeah. I like to watch the crazy people, and how they actually get help and are taken seriously. Although, some are just funny." Marco chuckled. He knew many enjoyed watching Dr Phil to see all the kinds of people there. Marco had to say he hadn't watched much of it, so he would try and see what all the fuss was about. And Marco had to say it was interesting, this show being about a couple adults fighting over their kids. Marco felt bad for the kids, which Dr Phil did help in the end. He could see why Ace enjoyed this show.

When it was over and Phil said goodbye to the crowd that Ace stood up and headed to the bathroom, Marco on his way to see if there was anything else on the TV. But before he could change the channel, the preview for tomorrow's episode was told, which had him turn his attention back to the TV as he moved the remote down. It was about a woman, who took in foster kids, usually only having one until they got adopted by more suitable parents, and how she had gotten a girl that was 15 in, and how she was clearly having issues as she hid food in the closet, hid clothes under the bed or closet, and just the thought about food being thrown had her having issues. That did sound interesting, and Maybe Marco could gain something from it, just to understand Ace's thoughts better. So Marco moved to record tomorrow's episode, also putting a parent lock on it, so the other children couldn't see it as it had a warning for adult and sexual content. Maybe he could watch it with Whitebeard tomorrow, but he would see how Ace was and if it was time enough to do it. Marco did think of keeping Ace home tomorrow, just in case, also to make sure Ace could relax.

The next hours went by fine, and when the clock was nearing 1pm, he sat with Ace on the couch, watching some cartoons. But as they were watching it, he suddenly noticed Ace shaking a bit, which had him look at Ace. "Ace?" Ace shook his head, and he noticed tears in his eyes, making him move a hand to Ace's shoulder. "Ace?" Ace shook his head a bit. "I don't know what's happening, but I want to cry." Marco nodded, moving to hug Ace. "And that's fine, you can cry, yoi." Ace nodded against him, before a sob was let out, Ace moving to grab onto his shirt as he cried and sobbed. Marco made sure to do his best in comforting Ace, his body shaking as he cried. It lasted for almost half an hour, before Ace calmed down some, still crying and Marco doing his best to be there for Ace. It took 10 more minutes, before Ace managed to get a deep breath in, seeming to calm down. He was glad Ace was calming down, but Marco felt bad, for not noticing and that Ace had to go through this. But, he wasn't alone, and that was important. When Ace was alm, Marco leaned back, looking at Ace. "You're allowed to be upset, Ace. What that teacher did is not okay, yoi." Ace nodded, a hand moving to dry his eyes, still hulking and breathing hard.

When Ace was calm again, Marco moved to hug Ace again. "You are allowed to be as upset as you want to be, yoi. That teacher was way out of her way. I am just so sorry I didn't notice it before." Ace nodded, still looking devastated as a few tears still fell. It was hard to see Ace like this, and to know he could have kept this from happening if he had seen the signs that something was wrong and acted on it, not waiting until he told Deuce. But Ace seemed calmer, which was good, and from there, Ace seemed fine. They then went back to watching cartoons, Marco keeping a hand on Ace's leg as comfort, which Ace seemed to like.

After that, it was calm, and after an hour more, Marco moved to take his phone out of his pocket as it rang, seeing it was Shanks calling, Marco hoping for some good news about the teacher, that there was enough to have her stop teaching at Ace's school. "Marco Fishback," Said Marco out of habit, hearing whistle from the other end. "My God, Marco. Do you know you have helped 5 states today?" Marco blinked. "What, yoi? What are you talking about?" He heard a breath from Shanks. "Miss Kalifa, she's wanted in 5 states. Changed her name 8 times too. Wanted because of abusing her powers as a teacher at school. She's usually vocal and malicious, using extortion as you said, but she do have a past in physical abuse; hitting children. I hope she hasn't done that to Ace." Marco blinked, taking that information in. "She's wanted in 5 states, yoi? Is she gone? And I don't know if she has been physical with Ace, but based on what I have heard, it wouldn't be above her. I'll try and ask Ace; he didn't tell when Akainu did."

He heard Shanks sigh. "I know, and I hope she hasn't. And she's taken into custody until a hearing can be arranged. But hey, can you have Dr Deuce call me? For some reason, I don't have his number. I want to have Judge Andrea on this case." That was a good idea. "Glad she's gone. And actually, yoi. Judge Andrea, or Andrea Scandi, is now a family friend of ours. I can call her and ask. I am sure her husband, who is also a judge, would help out, too." He heard a chuckle from Shanks. "Not surprised. You and Newgate know everyone. I have a feeling, if Judge Andrea is the judge, she won't be let off easy." That had Marco chuckle too. "Agreed, yoi. Speak to you later, Shanks. Maybe Ace and Eustass can meet tomorrow, yoi. Ace is better." That had Shanks give a breath, sounding glad. "Yeah, Eustass would love it, he doesn't play well with other kids." Marco blinked as he thought that over, going through how Ace was. "I don't think Ace is much around others than his siblings, yoi. And even that has been hard." Ace was somewhat withdrawn, but he had a huge family now. Eustass didn't have many around him, even less who can relate. They then arranged for Eustass to come over at noon, and then they could play together for that day and stay until dinner.

When Whitebeard got home, Marco met him in the hallway, having seen his car pull up, and when he asked how things were going, Marco nodded. "Okay, better, yoi." Marco then moved to hug his fiance, who hugged back. "You've done great, Marco. Will Ace be home tomorrow too?" Marco nodded. "He will. I want to have him home for another day." He then told what Shanks had said, that that teacher was wanted in 5 states and how she would go on trial and Andrea would most likely handle that trial. It had Whitebeard chuckle. "I am sure she will get what she deserves then." Marco nodded, leaning back, looking at Whitebeard. "Are you staying home tomorrow too?" It was friday, and Whitebeard often had home office those days. Whitebeard hummed. "Want me home?" Marco nodded. "I would like that. Shanks and Eustass are coming over a trip. I also took up Dr Phil on the TV, he's tackling something I felt was close to Ace, yoi." Whitebeard nodded. "Sounds good." Whitebeard then leaned in and kissed him, Marco kissing back, before they parted and Whitebeard looked at him. "Where is Ace? I want to speak with him." Marco nodded and pointed to the living room, and the man headed there, him following.

When Whitebeard got to the living room, he sat down on the couch, a hand moving to Ace's shoulder. "Why didn't you tell what the teacher was doing and saying?" Ace gave an unsure sound. "She said you wouldn't believe me…" Whitebeard shook his head. "I will always believe you, no matter what, son." Ace nodded. "Okay…" Whitebeard then hugged Ace, Ace hugging back. Ace was doing better, and that was everything. The rest of the day went by fine, and when the rest of the children came home, they had dinner.

And when evening came, Marco moved to sit down next to Ace on his bed, a hand going to his leg as comfort. "Ace, I need you to be honest with me, okay, yoi?" When Ace nodded, Marco continued. "Miss Kalifa, the home-ed teacher, has she ever laid a hand on you, yoi?" Ace blinked. "W-what do you mean?" Marco sighed. "Has she ever hit you? Or done anything physical to you?" Ace gave an unsure sound. "Um, she once dragged me by my arm, but that's it. Has- has she hit others?" Marco nodded. "She has, that's why I'm wondering." Ace nodded. "She never hit me, she was just… mean." Marco nodded. "I know, and she won't be your teacher anymore." Ace blinked. She won't? Who will be it?" Marco shrugged. "I don't know who, but someone nicer. I promise. That, and you and Thatch will be together." He hadn't spoken to the principal about it yet, but he had a feeling it wouldn't be an issue. If the principal knew what was good for him, he would let Ace and Thatch be in the same class.

The rest of the day went by fine, and when evening came, he sat with Ace in his room, going to say goodnight to him last, as he wanted to use a bit of time there, to make sure Ace was okay. Marco gave a breath as he moved to stroke Ace's head, glad he was asleep, sure the child needed it. Today had been a hard day, and he hoped tomorrow would be better. He still wished Ace had trusted him to tell him about that teacher, about what she was doing. She must be a horrendous woman. He moved his hand to rest on Ace's pillow as a hand massaged his head, wanting to stay until he was sure Ace was fine and asleep, that he wasn't restless in his sleep. He felt so bad and guilty for not noticing, and was glad Deuce had helped make this good. He just wanted what was best for Ace.

Whitebeard gave a frown as he looked in the living room, seeing no Marco. He had expected the man to be upstairs and getting ready for bed, as normal, but he wasn't. Whitebeard didn't like to go to bed alone, at least not without giving a goodnight to Marco. "Jozu, have you seen Marco?" The other shook his head as he had a glass of water. "No, I haven't. Isn't he upstairs?" Whitebeard frowned. "I didn't see him in our room. Maybe he's in the bathroom." It was rare for Marco to just disappear, especially now when the clock was 10; Marco always watched the news before bed. When he got upstairs and still no sign of Marco, he was about to check the laundry room downstairs; maybe Marco decided to do some laundry for some reason, but frowned when he saw the light in Ace's room was on. He was supposed to be asleep long ago. When he opened the door to see why the light was on, he chuckled as he found his missing fiancee, lying next to Ace in a somewhat sitting position, one hand around Ace's head protectively, both asleep.

"Find him?" Whitebeard nodded as he sent a look at Jozu. "Yeah. I'm now trying to decide whether to let him sleep or come to bed." Jozu hummed as he smiled at the scene in the room himself. "My thought; let them be. Ace has had a hellish day, or days." That was true. Ace would most likely feel better with having Marco close, and it was obvious Marco wanted to be close to Ace, most likely feeling guilty for this. Whitebeard did too; they should have picked up on it. But they were making it better now. Whitebeard gave a smile as he moved a hand to turn the lights off, making the room go dark, aside from the small night light that came on on the other side of the bed. "Goodnight, Marco; take care of our son."

He then carefully closed the door, hearing Jozu chuckling. "I sometimes wish I never grew up; I miss that." Whitebeard gave a small laugh. "Now, Jozu, you know just because you're older, doesn't mean you can't have the goods of needing an extra hug or closeness before bed; we will always be your parents." Jozu nodded. "I know. But I still feel too old. I'm just glad I can live here for a bit more." Whitebeard clapped Jozu on his back. "When you're done with your practice period, we will help you find a place. Just like we did with Izou." Jozu nodded. "Yeah, that sounds nice. Goodnight, Pops. We'll see each other tomorrow." They would, and Whitebeard hoped Ace would be better tomorrow. "Goodnight, son." Whitebeard then went to his room, lying down in an empty bed, which most likely would be empty for the night, Marco watching over Ace, something more important than him having Marco in their bed. Even he knew Marco had been sleeping alone now and then when Whitebeard himself fell asleep with the children after a night story or when they were sick, it was just how the days were.

Whitebeard loved his family.

The next few weeks went fine. The teacher's trial had been done, and she was charged with 60 years to life, without parole. It was good, she shouldn't be a teacher. Ace was doing better, and watching that Dr Phil show, and it had helped Marco understand Ace better. He hid things because he was afraid to lose it, which made sense. Ace had been on the streets, where everyone stole from each other. He did get some tips on how to help, which was to mention it was fine, and to show Ace what he did with the things he hid, so he knew it wouldn't be taken away, and it seemed to help.

After a few months had passed, they sat by the dinner table, eating. Not everyone was present right now, as dinner was ending and most of the children had left, just Haruta left at the table.

When dinner was ending, Marco looked at Vista. "You were at the hotel we heard? Why?" Marco had heard it on the news. Marco wasn't sure why they would go there, seeing as it was a run down hotel, where addicts, homeless people, and others like them stayed, usually the bad ones. Vista gave an annoyed sigh. "No idea now. We had a tip come in, about those murders now, but no find. Annoying." Marco gave a small breath, he didn't like the other speaking too detailed in the home, when he knew the younger children were close. He knew about these murders, having heard it on the news. Young children being found in a lake a bit away. It was worrisome and he hoped they would catch whoever did this. Marco gave a reassuring look at his son. "I'm sure someone just wanted your attention away, yoi." Vista nodded with a sigh. "I know. But it sounded legit. That hotel and the owner, Karlie, just screamed sketchy." Marco didn't know what to say, wanting to help, but he couldn't. "Behind the reception desk." Marco looked to the kitchen, seeing Ace walk out of it. "What did you say, Ace?" Asked Marco. He didn't quite catch it. Ace, not looking at them, as if ignoring them, looked somewhat nervous. "The hotel. Behind the reception. The wall is fake. There's a room."

Marco frowned. What? How did Ace know that? Vista gave a frown too. "How do you know that, Ace?" Ace just shook his head, not saying more, walking away and not saying anything. Marco gave a sigh. "Might just be rumors he heard. Go check it, yoi. The owner might just be acting since she has probably taken deals from those who stay there." Marco knew a lot of sketchy stuff happened there with prostitutes and drug dealers. Vista just nodded and accepted it. It was probably something Ace had heard on the streets. A lot of rumors went around on the street. Ace didn't say anything more on it, not even when Marco tried asking about it. It was probably nothing.

Vista walked into the hotel the next morning, a cop getting the owner away, while Vista moved to the wall, pushing on it and seeing it was a fake panel. Ace was right. How did he know? When the fake panel was moved, he felt something settle inside him. It was an empty room, aside from a TV, a bed, and a camera. Vista walked in more, letting those behind him get a view of it so they could help look through and see if they found any connections to the murders. The bed was dirty and obviously not kept well. When he moved the covers, just a thin sheet, he gave a sigh as he saw stains, a mix of what might be body fluids and blood. He really didn't like this. How did Ace know about this room? "Newgate." Vista turned to Jiru, who stood in front of a stack of tapes, VHS tapes. Vista walked over, looking at them. They had dates on them, nothing more. He turned to the TV, seeing a VHS-player, putting the first one in.

When it started, it was obviously taken in this room, a young girl, maybe 13, sitting on the bed, her in the main shot. "Hey there little girl." Vista gave a shush to the others in the room, hearing the gruff voice speaking on the video. "Why are you here?" The girl looked lost, not answering. "Are you a virgin?" The girl looked to the side, before looking at the camera. "I'm scared," Answered the girl. A laughter was heard, gruff. "Come to me, little girl." Vista turned the tape off, not wanting to see more. "Let's take this in. This might be connected." Vista hated being in charge when it came to these things. He didn't think he would find anything here, the reason he said he could go as the one in charge. This might be connected to the murders. He needed to ask Ace more, about how he knew about this. First, he would head to the police station and check these videos out.

It was an hour later the media was on the doors, Smoker letting out Vista was in charge of the sting and they wanted to talk to him, to find out how he knew, which he declined. After that, it wasn't long before Pops called, saying something that had his heart almost stop.

Ace was missing. His window was broken. Threatening messages on his phone, which was left. Ace never parted with it, he loved his phone and was terrified to lose it. Someone had taken Ace.

"Akagami!" Shanks turned to Lieutenant Kuzan, who stood in the door to the evidence room. "Here! Now!" This didn't sound good. He was rarely called in on the police work. They didn't need a detective often. He liked it less since his partner, Yasopp, was left out. He walked to the room seeing it empty, save for Jiru. Why was it Jiru who was here? He would have understood Vista, seeing as he knew he had been the one in charge of the group who found the tapes. "What is it, Lieutenant?" The man sighed, closing the door. "We are the only ones who know for now, but I need confirmation from someone who is sure." Shanks frowned. "On what?" The Lieutenant walked to the VHS player. "If this is who we think it is, we have only seen him rarely." The man pressed play, and Shanks could only stare in shock at the screen.

"Hey there, little boy," Said a gruff voice, Shanks barely hearing it as he looked at the kid on the tape. It was Ace. Ace was on the tape. Shanks could see Ace swallowing, the man giving a gruff laugh. "Don't worry, little boy. No one knows you're here, no one can hear you. You're safe with me." The last part was a half whisper, being enough for him and turning it off, not able to see more. Ace was on a tape. He looked at the other two. "Yeah, that's Ace, Newgate's kid." Oh Lord, he couldn't handle this. "Do only we know?" The two nodded. That was good. "Have you looked at the other videos?" Lieutenant Kuzan sighed. "A few left." Shanks felt his heart speed up. "I want to see them myself." Kuzan sighed. "Akagami, no. You a-" Shanks took a step towards the man. "No! My kid might be on one!" A look was given to him. "Which is why I say no! You might be too close if that's the case. Don't worry, I'll look at them myself, no one else. If he is, I'll tell you and pull you away." Shanks shook his head. "No. I want to do this! This changes everything!" He had gotten an update on that case a bit ago, to hear if he had the time to help, and he had been on his way out to help, and it wasn't good news he had gotten.

Kuzan looked at him. "No. If your kid is on them, you're off on vacation until further notice." Kuzan sighed. "If your kid is not on them, you can help. I hate this, I mean it, but your kid can help." Shanks could agree on it. Hoping Eustass wasn't on them. But still, that didn't make sense. "Why my kid? Why not Newgate's? He's even on the tape! He has spoken to the man." Shanks knew Kuzan didn't care if it was a kid that was a witness. A thing he liked as they got a lot of good tips and things from kids, Shanks being one of them who spoke to the kids. Kuzan closed his eyes. "Good God, no one has told you?" Shanks frowned. "What?" Kuzan sighed. "An hour ago, Edward Newgate called in. Someone broke in and kidnapped Ace D Portgas. His window was broken and he had threatening messages on his phone, which was left."

Shanks felt everything stop. "W-what?" Kuzan looked at Jiru. "Out." When the man was out, Kuzan got him a chair to sit on. "News got we found the hidden room, and Smoker, the idiot, told it was Vista who got the tip. This was released 5 hours ago." Oh lord. "Someone connected it to Ace," Muttered Shanks. Kuzan nodded. "Yes. We took it as a ransom kidnapping. But this, the fact he is on the tape, changes everything. Ace spoke- as Vista Newgate said- fearfully. He was scared this would happen. This is why no one would tell. They are scared." Kuzan moved a hand to Shanks' shoulder. "I contacted your husband myself. He's coming here with Eustass, to keep him safe and answer a few questions." Shanks shook his head. "No. He can't know Ace got kidnapped. He can't. We can't take him here, it'll be too much for him. Just the fact Ace is gone is too much." Shanks got an idea and got up, taking his phone out and grabbing the tape. "Akagami! What are you doing?!" Yelled Kuzan after him. "Eustass can't come here! I'm telling Benn to go to Newgate's place! I'll speak to him, to them." He heard Kuzan yell after him, but he didn't care and went into his car, calling Newgate and telling he was coming over and had a piece of information with him.

They needed to find Ace.

Marco watched as Shanks put the tape into the old VCR they had, hoping the man was wrong. If what he said was true, Ace was on a tape found in the hidden room. And, he didn't want that. He had been the one to find Ace was missing, having gone to check on the kid as they hadn't heard anything for a couple hours. When he had gone to Ace's room, it was cold and the window was broken from the outside. He had found his phone, and it had a lot of threatening messages, it had to be connected to this. He then watched as Shanks pushed play, after rewinding it some. Marco felt all breath leave him as the screen showed Ace sitting in a dark room, not looking much younger than he was, maybe 10 or 11.

"Hey there, little boy," Started a gruff voice, Marco moving to grab Whitebeard's hand. Ace looked nervous and scared, even swallowing as he seemed nervous, looking at the camera. "Don't worry, little boy," Started the gruff voice again, "No one knows you're here, no one can hear you. You're safe with me." Marco could see Ace fidgeting with his hands. The man then spoke again. "Tell me your name, pretty boy." Marco hated that name, hated this tape, hated this person who spoke. Ace swallowed again. "E-Ebony." A chuckle was heard from the man behind the camera. "That's right. You're Ebony. You've come here. You know what to do to get the money, right?" Ace swallowed again, looking to be answering, but didn't make it, a tear falling down his face. "No no no, hush, pretty boy. Why are you crying?" Marco would tear this man apart when they found him. "You need the money, right?" Was said in a smug way. Ace nodded, making the man chuckle. "Good, pretty boy, good. Now, are you a virgin?" No. Marco felt his world stop. No, he didn't just ask that. Ace looked a bit around the room, looking up, before he looked more nervous, slowly shaking his head. "Come here, pretty boy," Said the voice, making Marco want to kill the man behind the voice, kill all those who had hurt his son.

Shanks turned the tape off, giving a sigh. "It got out that Vista came with the tip to the hidden room. When the media got it, it took an hour, then Ace was gone. Someone doesn't like that he told what he had said. It's only us, Lieutenant Kuzan, and Officer Jiru who know Ace is on a tape. We can't let this out." Marco couldn't speak, couldn't think. He felt Whitebeard squeeze his hand. "Thank you for telling and showing us this, Shanks. Do you have a suspect?" Shanks sighed. "Yeah. A guy called Moriah Gekko. He hasn't been seen the last day, not even showing up at work. We spoke to his girlfriend. He assaulted her and stole her money and car." Oh God. He had taken Ace. "Is it connected to the murders?" Asked Whitebeard, Marco felt himself grasp the hand harder. Shanks sighed. "4 people on the tapes are among the victims." Marco felt all oxygen leave him.

Ace was kidnapped by a maniac since he gave a tip to help Vista.

Marco sat in the car with Benn, Eustass, and Whitebeard, who sat in the back, and then Shanks who drove, Marco in the passenger seat. They were searching around, hoping to find signs of Ace. If he had maybe run away again, or gotten away and went to a familiar place for now. When they got to the local church, Marco and Whitebeard headed out, heading into the church to ask the pastor if he had seen Ace. The pastor, Mike, often helped the homeless children. He had something called the lottery. It was a lottery he did every night. The church had 20 sleeping spaces made for the homeless, usually for children, but there were many more who were homeless, so he did a lottery to get 20 in, and the rest had to find somewhere else to be for the night. The church only had 20 sleeping beds, that was it. It wasn't a big church. This was one of the reasons they wanted to build a safe house, so the homeless had more places to go. But, it had been put on hold for the winter.

It was half an hour later that they got back to the car. Marco gave a sigh as he sat down in the car seat, closing the door, Whitebeard soon in his own seat behind him. They didn't get farther. "Pastor Mike hasn't seen him at all. He's doing the lottery again, too many who want to stay, yoi." Pastor Mike was a good guy, one of the few who helped around. Maybe they should ask him to help when they opened their safehouse for those who were homeless. They did need help.

"Dad?" Shanks gave a hum, looking back at Eustass, who was seated beside Whitebeard. Shanks knew the town best, so he drove. "Am… I am safe, right?" Maybe it all caught up with Eustass, scared he might be taken too. "Of course, Eustass. That's why we all are here, kiddo. We're keeping you safe." Eustass swallowed, looking out the window. "He's lying, Pastor Mike." Marco blinked, turning to look back at Eustass too, seeing Shanks was looking worried at the red-haired kid. "What do you mean, son?" Shanks sounded worried, and Marco had to agree. This didn't feel right. Eustass didn't answer, only shaking his head, ignoring them. Acting the same way when Ace told about the hidden room.

Marco looked at Shanks. "Order a full background check, yoi." Shanks blinked at him. "He's a pastor. You know how bad that will be." Marco gave a look to Whitebeard, who somewhat distracted the kid as he spoke to Shanks in a hushed tone. "Ace spoke the same way about the hidden room, yoi. Not looking at us, ignoring us, pretending he didn't speak. Eustass knows something."Shanks gave a sigh, nodding as he pulled his phone out and called someone, ordering the full background. He knew Shanks trusted Eustass, but he still knew what this would start if it was wrong. One never did a background on a pastor. It was bad all around. When he had done it, he looked back at Eustass with a comforting smile. "We'll find Ace, kiddo. And, you are completely safe with us." Eustass gave a nod, giving a smile back.

They drove around and asked a bit around if anyone had seen Ace or anyone suspicious. After a bit over an hour, Shanks' phone rang. "Detective Akagami." Marco really hoped it was some good news. He could hear the muffled speaking on the other end of the phone. "Is this a fucking joke?" He managed to hear Shanks say as he stepped out of the car, having pulled over, Marco quickly going out too. This sounded bad. "Send out a patrol, we're heading back. Call me when you figure out who that is." Then he hung up, looking at him with a worried look. "Pastor Mike is dead, died 4 years ago. That man is someone called Enel."

Shanks was at a loss on how much he didn't know, that was clear on how he looked. Marco felt the same, he had to admit that. They all had honored the man, and now, he might be the murderer. And worse, they knew, the kids knew, and still stayed. They stayed because it was a place to be. Marco looked at Shanks when he uttered a curse. "Just what are we uncovering? How many lies are there?" That was a scary question. They might uncover a lot they never wanted to know. They already had found out the pastor everyone loved was a lie and fraud, maybe a murderer.

-x-

It was two hours later that a call came in for Shanks, and when he hung up, he headed out of the car, Marco joining him. He wanted all the news too. "Someone saw the car in question and it was heading after a running black-haired kid. Someone is hunting him. The kid got hit by a car but ran away, the ones who hit him saw the kid and a car that was driving irresponsible after him. It might be Ace." God, someone was hunting for a young boy running away, even after being hit. This man might have seen Ace and the murderer, and not only was Ace injured, but he might have been hit by the car too. This was starting to become too much. "Is Ace injured?!" Damn, Eustass had gotten out of the car. "Kiddo, go back," Said Shanks, obviously scared something might happen. "No!" Yelled the kid, stepping towards his father, "If he is injured, I know where he would have gone!"

That had their attention. "Where?" Asked Marco, needing to get there. Maybe Ace was there. Eustass gave a nervous look to the other officers at the scene, making Shanks head to the car, looking at them. "I'll call and update you later." Marco followed and sat in the car, when the doors were closed and everyone inside, Shanks looked at Eustass in the mirror. "Which way?" Eustass took a breath. "Left at the next intersection." Shanks started driving, Marco hoping, desperately, they would find Ace.

A few minutes later, they pulled up by a house. "Eustass, this is a veterinary." Why would Ace come here? Why not go to the hospital instead. "I know," said Eustass, quickly going out of the car and into an alley, then following as fast as they could, seeing Eustass barging into a backdoor to the veterinary, which was open. "Ace!" They heard Eustass yell when they got inside the building, a guy, most likely the veterinarian based on the clothes, prepped for surgery, came from a door. With blood filled gloves and on his apron. "What are you doing here?! Get out! We're clo- Kid!" The guy cut of as Eustass ran past him, into a room that was lit up with a surgery light.

A black-haired kid was on the surgery table, not looking well. "Hands behind your back!" Yelled Shanks when he saw it, gun out. The man held his hands up. "He was more injured when he arrived!" As Shanks cuffed the guy, Marco and Whitebeard went over to Eustass, who was checking the young boy, face going into shock when he took a cloth away from the body. "Lyric?" When Marco got closer, he saw it wasn't Ace. Maybe this Lyric person. Was he dead? Marco moved a hand to the kid's neck. And the second his hand touched it, the boy woke with a start, yelling and screaming in fear, trying to get away.

Eustass moved a hand to the kid's shoulder. "Lyric, it's me, Copper." It took a few seconds, but the person calmed down. "Copper? Where have you been?" Eustass blinked. "Me? What about you?! Why are you here?" The person, Lyric swallowed. "I don't want to talk about it." Eustass frowned. "You know who it is?" Lyric shook his head. "I don't know what you're talking about." Eustass shook his head. "No! You know! He has Ace! Ebony!" Lyric shook his head, not saying anything. After that, it wasn't long before an ambulance came, and when Lyric got to the hospital, he was rushed to surgery, being badly damaged. When he was done, a cop was overlooking him. Hoping to get some news when he got released. They continued to search the streets for Ace or anyone suspicious. It was a couple hours later that Shanks got a call, and it wasn't a good one. Lyric had disappeared, managing to trick the cop and run away. Their only hope was gone. They needed to search for him.

Before he could think more of it, Eustass looked at Shanks. "I need money." Said Eustass, and Shanks nodded. "How much?" Eustass thought for a second. "100 bucks. I know where Lyric is." That might be good. They needed to find the kid. Shanks then moved to give the money to Eustass, who then went out of the car, and when they tried to follow, he stopped them. "I need to do this alone." Shanks obviously didn't like it, but let the kid go. There were only so many places he could go. It was just a few minutes later that Eustass returned, and when he did, he had a small bag. "What is it?" Eustass gave an unsure look. "Heroin. Lyric's a user. Go to the train station. Lyric's gonna skip town." Shanks nodded and they drove to the station, and when they got there, they saw Lyric sitting on the ground by a beam. Eustass said them to be still and he headed over. They could still see him so it was fine. Eustass then sat down next to Lyric, saying something, before he offered the bag, Lyric taking it. They then sat in silence until a train came a minute later, and when Lyric moved to get on it, he spoke, making Eustass look shocked. When the train drove away, they headed over. "Kiddo?" Eustass took a breath. "It's Kizaru." They frowned, especially Shanks. "What?" Eustass shook his head. "Kizaru took Lyric, it's him! He has Ace!" Shanks moved his hands out. "Let us check first, let's send a patrol." Eustass nodded and Shanks went to call it inn. AS he had, he went back to them. "What did Lyric say?" Eustass swallowed. "That it was Kizaru who took him and drove the car, he barely managed to escape, then Pastor Mike got him to the veterinarian. It's Kizaru." Shanks looked bothered by that, and Marco got it. Kizaru had been in Shanks' home with Eustass, even watching over him one time. Kizaru was his superior and he liked the man. But was it really him? He hoped not, that this was something that the Lyric person made up.

It was an hour later the phone to Shanks rang and he took it quickly. "What? Please have good news." He heard some muffled sound, and Shanks looked shocked, before he looked at Eustass. "Go to the car, go to Benn." Eustass was on his way to speak, when Shanks gave a glare and Eustass followed orders. When he was gone, Shanks looked at him. "They found a locker belonging to Kizaru. Lyric was right, it was Kizaru. They even found a body in his trunk. He took a car and ran, they are searching for him." Marco felt his eyes go big, on his way to speak when Shanks continued. "It wasn't Ace in the trunk. It was someone else, we don't know who yet. Ace can still be alive." Marco hoped so, they really needed to find Kizaru so they could find Ace. It was an hour later when Shanks got a call and it was that they had Kizaru, and they headed to the police station they were at. When they got there, they were told Kizaru had said Ace got away on a gas station west of the town, and Marco, Whitebeard, and Benn went to check for Ace, Shanks staying with Kizaru, Vista too as he was there.

It was a few hours later, still nothing found, when Shanks turned to Kizaru when he laughed. "The black-haired brat, I lied about him. Damn bastard got away while we drove east side of town, tried searching for him when you came. He will be dead by the time you find him. It's cold on these days, lost outside of the city. Poor cute boy." Vista moved and punched the guy. "You said at the gas station!" The man laughed, not caring he was hit. "I lied! I can't have you finding him. Why not send all of you to the wrong side of town!" Damn it! Shanks got Vista out of the room, before he killed him. Shanks wanted this bastard in prison. He knew very well what child killers got in there. "You can't, Vista. Leave him. We have enough, let's focus on Ace." The man gave an angry breath as he nodded, ordering search teams out, also calling Marco and Whitebeard. They needed to search and find Ace fast. Kizaru was right, it was cold these days, so Ace would die if they didn't find him soon, or he found shelter. Ace didn't trust anyone, so he would stay away from everyone, and the place he knew was far away from east side. Ace would really be lost.

It was an hour later Eustass spoke up. "You are an idiot!" Shanks turned to Eustass. "What?" Eustass shook his head. "Not you, me. East side of town, I know where Ace is!" Shanks blinked, eyes going wide. "You sure?" Eustass nodded. "Yeah. Might be wrong, but doubt it." Okay, that was good. He still wouldn't tell the others, in case Eustass was wrong. They needed all the search help they could get. "Come, let's head to the car." Eustass nodded and they headed off. When they were driving, Eustass telling the way, or where he might be, he also asked why no one joined them, Shanks explained that it was in case he was wrong. He didn't want to pull others off the search, just in case Eustass was wrong.

When they did get to where Eustass said, Shanks was shocked when it was a graveyard. "You sure he might be here?" Eustass nodded as he slowed the car down. "He goes to his mother's grave when lost." Shanks was just about to ask what that meant when Eustass suddenly jumped out of the car, which was moving, but slowly. "Eustass!" Shanks didn't like this and quickly stopped the car, hurring out and running after his kid. "Ace!" He heard his son yell, suddenly speeding up more. When did Eustass get this fast? "Eustass! Stop!" Shanks didn't want Eustass to run by himself. As Shanks was almost catching up to Eustass, the kid turned and headed to the left, Shanks following, but feeling himself faltering for a second on what he saw a few graves ahead. Ace sat leaned against one, not looking too well. "Ace!" Yelled Eustass again, Ace moving his head up as he heard it, a bruised face looking shocked at them.

Eustass was quickly beside Ace, crouched down and hugging Ace, giving words of comfort and reassurance, both to himself and Ace. When Shanks got to them, he took in Ace first. His clothes were bloody, tears on them here and there, face bruised, his lip and eye the worst, swollen, blue and purple, and bleeding. Shanks quickly crouched down next to them, moving his hands to Ace's head, looking at him. "Hey, how are you?" Ace shook his head, a few tears going down his face, mixing with the blood. "I'm scared." Shanks shook his head, moving his head to Ace's. "It's fine now. You're safe now, we got you. We got Kizaru." Shanks really wanted to hug Ace, but Eustass was hugging him already and he didn't want to join in as Eustass needed this to calm himself, and he really didn't want to part them.

Shanks moved his head back. "We should get you to a hospital, kid." Ace nodded slowly. "I can't get up." Shanks shook his head. "It's okay. Eustass," he said as he moved a hand to Eustass' shoulder, making him let go, before he moved and lifted Ace with his arm, the kid giving a flinch. Ace was a light kid, so it was not hard to carry him. When they got to his car, he saw Yasopp had followed them. Shanks really liked that man at times, how he knew when he was needed. "Yasopp! Get Vista Newgate to the hospital! Don't tell anyone we have Ace!" He didn't want this to get out, needing to keep this a bit silent for now. He would have liked to have Marco and Whitebeard, but they were too far away right now. Vista wasn't. Shanks wanted to make sure nothing happened and would keep this a secret for now.

When they got to the car, he put Ace in the front with himself, to keep an eye on him, before heading to the hospital, breaking a few laws here and there. As they were halfway, Ace spoke. "I-I want Doctor Tra-Trafalgar." Of course, one of the doctors the kid actually knew. "Sure, kiddo." Shanks quickly got his phone out and called the hospital. "Get Doctor Trafalgar ready for a patient!" When the woman on the other end said he was busy, Shanks figured he didn't care, Ace was first priority. "This is private detective Shanks Akagami! If that doctor is not ready for us, I will make sure everyone is fired!" That did the trick and the woman stammered out a response. "Y-Yes, of course Detective." Shanks loved his status at times.

When they got to the hospital, they took the back door inside, doctor Trafalgar thankfully being smart and waiting there, understanding that they would take the back door. "Detective, what do you have?" Shanks, who was carrying Ace, headed to what he knew was an empty room. "Kid, 12 years old. You've treated him before. Ace Newgate. Kidnapped by a man. I have no idea what kind of injuries." The man nodded, closing the door and a curtain as they got into the room, Shanks placing Ace in the bed. When the doctor came over, Shanks on his way to move away, a hand came and grasped his sleeve, a scared look at him. "You should stay." Shanks looked at the doctor, who continued. "I might have some of his trust, but you should stay. Traumatic events can cause this uncertainty." That's true. He gave a nod and moved to stand beside Ace, giving a comforting look."I'll stay in the room, okay, kiddo?" Ace nodded. Shanks didn't want to be in the way for the doctor, so he would take a step back, but never leave.

Speaking of which. He looked at the doctor. "What about Eustass?" He said as he motioned for the other kid, who clearly wanted to go to Ace, but uncertain about the doctor and to be in the way. "He can come sit here," Dr Trafalgar said as he motioned for a chair close by Ace's head, "He will be close and it will calm him." Good, that was good. He gave a push to Eustass, giving the reassurance it was okay. The doctor then started looking Ace over, asking questions as he did, patching the wounds as he went, starting with his limbs, where the worst seemed to be, as in cuts and such. When the doctor was done with his legs and was starting on his torso, the door opened suddenly, hearing a nurse yelling after. When Shanks moved to the other side of the curtain, he was relieved to see Vista there. "What is it, Shanks? Why did you need me here? Is Eustass okay?" Shanks gave a sigh, hand moving to rub his temples. Yasopp did mess things up at times. "I didn't mean for Yasopp to hide this from you, just the rest." He then moved the curtains a bit away, showing Ace. "We found Ace."

Shanks could see Vista giving a relieved breath, walking over to Ace and hugging the kid, the doctor moving away for a second. "You're okay! Thank God!" Ace nodded, Vista moved a hand to his bruised and bloodied face. "How are you?" "O-okay… I think. I- I want mom and dad." Vista nodded, taking his phone out. "Of course, I'll tell them the room. They'll be here soon." Ace nodded, and the doctor went back to checking Ace, checking his chest over, which was worse than he first thought, having removed his shirt and Ace had many scrapes and cuts on his body, and a few that needed to be stitched, the doctor handling those first.

It was an hour and half later, Dr Trafalgar just done with Ace's torso, that the door opened again and Marco and Whitebeard walked in, Marco instantly breathing out in relief as he saw Ace, rushing over to the bed and grabbing his face, before hugging him. "Oh lord, you're safe. You're safe, yoi." Whitebeard was there a second later, hugging Ace too. When Marco moved back, he still had his hands on Ace's face. "Look at you, yoi. We will get you cleaned up," The blond man said as he grabbed a wet cloth from a table, cleaning Ace's face. Whitebeard gave a chuckle. "Honey, I think the doctor wants to do that." Marco gave a glare to the other. "And yet, he hasn't. He is my child. I can clean his face." Whitebeard gave an apologetic look to the doctor, who had a half-annoyed look, sitting down in a chair and waiting.

It took some time, but Ace's face was soon clean, Marco having spoken with Ace the entire time, to make sure he was fine. When he was done with his face, the doctor moved in and started to patch Ace's wounds on his face, Marco standing a bit to the side with his fiance. When Ace was patched up, both Whitebeard and Marco hugged Ace, so glad he was fine. Ace was in the hospital for about 2 more hours, before they were allowed to leave. When they left and sat in the car, Marco asked what had happened back home, and Ace said someone had suddenly been in his room while he was listening to music and took him. He had tried to yell out, but a cloth was over his mouth before he could. That fit with everything. He did identify the man as Kizaru. But, he would be behind bars for a long time, and he would actually die quickly. He hurt children, he knew what happened to those in jail. They were killed, and they were killed brutally. It's what the man deserved.

Marco stood in his living room, having just gotten home, Shanks joining him with Eustass, so the kids could hang out. As they were back home, Shanks got a call, and when he had taken it, he looked at him. "The hearing to Pastor Mik- Enel, Moriah Gekko, and the veterinary, Chopper, is tomorrow." That was good, they should get behind bars. Shanks then went to speak with Eustass, while Marco headed to Ace. "Okay, the hearing to Pastor Mik- Enel, Moriah Gekko, and the veterinary, Chopper, is tomorrow, Ace, would you help get them behind bars, yoi." Ace blinked. "No! I will not! They're nice!" Marco sighed. "They broke the rules, and Enel outright lied about who he was, and the veterinary, Chopper, did surgery on humans. He wasn't allowed to do that. And Moriah Gekko, he did so much wrong." Ace crossed his arms. "Well, I am not testifying against them!" Marco heard Shanks sigh, the man coming into the room. "The others said the same, just got a call. No one wants to testify against them. They will walk free. Aside from Moriah Gekko, we have enough to get him behind bars for a few years, based on the tapes. And maybe Chopper, but it depends. He did do something right in helping people." That was something Marco didn't want. They didn't deserve to go free. "Even Enel? After he lied?" Shanks sighed. "Yes. He never lied actually, he just never told his real name to the others. Every child knows who he is, and they still stayed. We have no case without their help. Even Eustass won't testify against them."

That was bad, they should be behind bars. But he got why no one wanted to testify against them. They were the only ones to help the children. He then looked at Ace. "Why don't you want to testify against Moriah Gekko?" Ace shrugged. "He gave us money." Marco blinked. "For the wrong reasons, yoi. What happened after the tape was shut off?" Ace blinked, before he frowned. "What do you mean? He never stopped it." Marco blinked, not sure how that made sense, when Shanks spoke. "I heard a technician said a few of the tapes were tampered with. Maybe we will find the rest in his house. It's being searched now." Marco hoped things would be fine, that they didn't find anything bad, that the tapes were just that.

Shanks then left, and when the next day came, Shanks called. Marco heard Shanks sigh on the other side. "We found the rest of the tapes on Moriah Gekko's computer." Marco closed his eyes. "How bad, yoi?" Shanks took a breath. "Oral sex. It could have been worse. It is still horrible, but he could have done worse. They had been uploaded to a child pornography site, we closed it. We also found many other offenders." That was good, that they found other offenders. But he didn't like this, and moved a hand to his face. "I need to speak with Ace about this. We need to get him behind bars." He heard Shanks speak. "Oh no no. We don't need Ace. He might not speak or show himself in the tapes uploaded, but we know it's him, based on the tapes he kept. He's going away for life, maybe even sentenced to death." That was good. "Good, but I still think I need to speak with Ace about this, yoi." He heard Shanks breathe out. "Maybe Deuce can handle it." That was also an idea, but he still wanted to speak with Ace about this. "I will call Deuce later, yoi. For now, I will handle Ace." Shanks said okay, and they hung up.

He then spoke with Whitebeard, who didn't like the news, and agreed they should speak with Ace about this. So they headed up to Ace's room, where Ace was playing on his phone, looking up when they came in. "Hi." Said Ace, and they gave a hi back, before they moved to sit on Ace's bed, Ace sitting on a chair. "Ace, how often were you with Moira Gekko?" Ace gave a small hum. "4 times?" That was 4 times to many. "Why didn't you tell what he did?" Ace shrugged. "He gave us money." That didn't make it better. "It was wrong of him to do that." Ace frowned. "To give us money?" Whitebeard shook his head. "No, what he made you do to get the money." Ace just shrugged, and Marco had a feeling they wouldn't get anywhere with this topic. Marco moved a hand to Ace's leg. "It was wrong of him to do that, and I hope you will realise that, yoi." Ace shrugged again, and Marco sighed, moving to hug Ace. "I want the best for you, Ace. I don't want you to be in pain or distressed, yoi." Ace blinked. "I'm not distressed." Marco sighed again. "You were crying, on the tape." Ace blinked again. "You… you saw the tape?" Marco nodded. "We did." Ace looked shocked. "Oh… I didn't know that. It wasn't so bad. I was just a bit scared." Marco got that, it must have been horrible for Ace. He held Ace for a bit more, before he let go, holding his hands on Ace's shoulder for a second. "He did wrong, yoi. Please release that." Ace nodded. "I know, but we got money."

Marco sighed. This wouldn't work. He hoped Deuce would get somewhere. He would call the man tomorrow, Ace had his session in 3 days. He was just glad Ace was back home and well. He still had the wounds and stitches, but it would heal well, nothing was too bad. Ace would be fine, and that was all that mattered. Things would be fine.

Ace moved through the school yard, playing on his phone, playing a game called Legendary, a game of heroes, it was fun. But as he walked, he stumbled and lost his phone, which fell down to the ground, which had his heart race as he ran to pick it up, giving out a loud no as it was broken, the screen cracked. What would he do now? He had broken his phone, and he loved his phone, and it was expensive. He knew that much. Ace felt his breath caught in his chest. What would he say to Marco and Whitebeard? He couldn't hide this, he needed to tell them. But what would they say? What if he lost his phone forever, since he had broken it. "Ace? What is it?" He heard Thatch ask, and Ace looked at the other, showing him his phone. "I broke my phone!" Ace felt his eyes go glassy, scared what would happen. Thatch just blinked. "Oh, Marco can fix that. Or Pops. That's nothing. I've broken it a hundred times." Okay, okay, maybe it would go fine somehow. But still, he should have been more careful. This was his fault.

The rest of the school day was horrible, Ace nervous about what would happen when he got home. Thatch did say it would go fine, but Ace didn't believe it. So when they got home, Vista picking them up, he moved towards Marco with his heart in his throat. "Marco?" Marco hummed, looking at some papers, and Ace held his phone out. "I broke my phone." Marco blinked, lifting his head. "You did, yoi?" Ace nodded, feeling tears threatening to fall. "I'm really sorry about it! I didn't mean to! I tripped!" Marco moved his hands in a calm manner. "It's okay, Ace. It's just the screen, yoi. We can fix that. I have insurance on it. Won't cost anything." Ace blinked. "What?" Marco gave a smile to him. "I have insurance on it. I knew it might happen. So, it's nothing to be worried about, yoi." Ace felt floored, it was fine? "It's okay?" Marco nodded. "It is. We got it insured for anything. Water damage, screen damage, phone issues in general. You did nothing wrong, yoi." Ace nodded, not sure what he felt.

Marco then crouched down in front of him. "It is nothing to be worried about. I know you're scared to cause trouble, but you're a magnificent person, a careful one, yoi. I won't be mad for something as trivial as a phone." Ace nodded, not sure what to do right now. He felt relieved, he had been so scared to say this, but it was fine? He wasn't in trouble? He felt a tear fall down his cheek, and Marco moved to dry it away. "Ace, don't be scared to tell me things, yoi. I will always be understanding." Ace nodded, he didn't expect this would go so fine. But he was glad it had gone fine.

Marco then moved a hand to his shoulder. "I know you still have issues with things, but we just want the best for you, and I'm glad you told me about the phone and didn't hide it. I know you hide things, yoi." Ace hung his head a bit. He knew he did. He still had issues with his clothes, he didn't want to lose them, so he hid them, and he still had his food stash. Marco moved a hand and lifted his head. "Don't be ashamed, I know it is hard for you. But we're working on it, yoi." Ace nodded, he was working on it. He was getting better at it. He sometimes managed to put his clothes in the hamper when he had showered. It was still new. He knew it had been months, but it was hard. He was glad Marco got that. The worst was when they had food that was old, he hated when that happened, as it meant it would go to waste.

But, things were going better
