Three Weeks Later
Horatio watched as the team looked around the table as they tried to catch up with the work that was missed. Thankfully things have been quiet so it's mostly lab work, but the Trujilio/Barnes case was still puzzling. "We have to figure out what we are missing. It's been bugging me for a while now" Horatio can still picture the two women dumped carelessly on the bank of the Everglades. Eric walks over, looking more refreshed than anything else.
"We'll get somewhere with this, no way can someone be so brazen. Stuff like this takes time. And hey, your hunch on Navarro might be right. A little birdie in the FBI told me that killers do things like this to throw the police off their trail. Like someone who chooses a specific race will switch races. This has Esteban written all over it, except the yes of course. But the torture does feel familiar. We'll get him H, don't worry."
It calms him to see everyone add in their words of agreement. Natalia especially looked uncomfortable looking at the photos of those victims strewn across the grass. Trujillio especially with her head turned to the sky, eyes dim. The trash from litter and the swamp in the background was heartbreaking. They were thrown away like trash, the killer made no mystery as to how he felt about them. Horatio watches as her eyes become misty momentarily and he shares her pain, suddenly she spoke up "we've got no choice but to get him, this is insane."
Back in Key West
Calleigh sat on the beach watching as her guards switched positions, she knew from watching that they'd take a break later tonight and then she can make her move. As the days passed she's been experimenting to see just how far she can go for how long. And it's been a success, easy even. And that unnerved her.
This past month of behaving has been more than trying. Esteban has thankfully been respectful and it surprised her. It's not like she had a choice when it came to his cuddling, but at least she can shower, bathe and soak without being bothered.
"Bebe" came the familiar voice of Papi and she turns to see him making his way down to her. The most surprising thing so far was how compassionate Diego was. The man clearly cared about his family but it stopped there. The reception he gave Horatio versus how he regards her is night and day. He's gentle, caring, loving and kind even. Between Esteban and the lost of his wife and daughter clearly is jading how he treats her. It's clear that everyone still is giving her a side eye because they know she's up to something but they can't tell what.
"Hey Papi, what's up?" he slid in right behind her, his arm wrapping around her midsection and practically pulling her in his lap. He rests his chin on her head and sighs deeply. "You watch the guards… I don't want to scare you or anything but I wanted you to know that we're aware." she tenses and pulls away from him. Turning, she sees the sadness in his eyes. "How..?"
His deep brown eyes look sorrowful and full of regret. "Those aren't the only ones watching you Calleigh. What are you planning?"
"I didn't even do anything ye-"
"Your Abuela is forcing Esteban to show you his… hobby regardless. She wanted you to stay in there for the week since you seem to want to try and test your limits. Both your husband and I decided the weekend would suffice. As I was saying, depending on your answer, you can either play assistant or take up occupancy." his eyes were serious and Calleigh felt her world close in around her. She couldn't stop the tears and knowing Diego, showing emotion will work in her favor. He immediately reacts to her tears and brings her in for another hug. The hand in her hair and soothing voice causes more tears to fall.
"I- I was just going to sneak away for as long as possible. I noticed there's a chunk of missing time where I could maybe hit the edge of the property and back. It got to the point where I could be gone for 15 minutes without anyone missing. Or so I thought. I figured i'd be able to slip away long enough to… to do something. I haven't thought that far yet." she hoped the truth would be enough. She walked past that shed a few times and heard the screams. She still doesn't know what happened or why that man was in there, but she's caught them talking shop every once in a while. Something about laundering funds from the Mala Noche? Russians? Either way, his employers aren't too happy with it.
Diego looks at her softly, the sympathy swimming in his eyes. "You were going to slip away and figure out the rest later? And how far have you been getting?"
She knows he knows the answer and is testing her out. It's pointless to lie, no matter how much control she thinks she has, they always have a backup plan. "The edge of the property, I haven't built the courage to leave it yet so I just stand on the edge longer each time I manage to slip away". He threw his head back with a laugh, clearly amused at her turmoil.
"Bebe, you're quite a character. Thank you for telling the truth."
"It's not like I had a choice but to. It seems you would've checked with your other sources."
His lip twitches up in a smile before he answers. "Those extra eyes were mine. I've seen you watching them and slipping away. I just wasn't sure what you were doing when you got away. Mami and mi hijo have been wanting you to participate in their… interrogation that much is true. And you staying in there as punishment as well, but that will stay between the two of us. I'd prefer to take you over my knee but this is just a taste of what is to come if you step out of line.
"Abuela wants you to be broken and Esteban will go to extreme lengths if you break his heart or trust. I- I don't want to see you or mi hijo hurt. You'll have your own work, looking over paperwork for a trail. But I want you in that room so you can know how serious I am about you being on your best behavior. That's fine?" his eyes turn sad as the tears overflow from her own.
"Do I have to? I can look over the statements from my room." he tucks a strand of hair behind her hair, whispering his sorrow. She collapses against his chest sobbing heavily. "Please, Papi. I- I'll stop I promise. I can't… no way… I just-"
"Bebe, it's okay. I hate it too. We'll be together looking over the numbers. I'll keep you grounded while you'er there. And when it's over, Esteban will be there to comfort you. Come, don't you usually nap around this time? Relax with me, I'm in need of a nap myself." He drags her up and into the house. She looks around as they duck through the halls, Esteban and Abuela must've gone to the shed. The relief is momentary as she's brought into Diego's room. He urges her onto the bed and she climbs in. This isn't the first time they've napped together but it is the first time they did it deliberately.
"Listen Bebe, it will be just fine. When it gets too much, let me know. This will be a learning lesson for your husband as well. Tell me, how is that going?" Papi leans on his elbow and smiles warmly, Calleigh feels her heart jump.
She blushes deeply, feeling it go down to her chest. "He's uh, he's quite the romantic." Papi bursts out laughing and urges her to continue. "We haven't been down to breakfast because he insists on us spending that time together at the very least. I've even been okay with us using the bathroom at the same time." she chuckles at the thought.
"He's surprisingly gentle too. I'm not made of candy glass but he handles me like I'm porcelain. He seems hesitant as well. Like any wrong move on his part and I'll hate him."
"Would you?" his question was sincere.
"I don't know. Honestly I'm not sure. I have to learn to love him and I've accepted that. With my track record of men… let's just say I am sure I will be able to even love his faults. I have seen what happens when I rejected him"
"Is that what happened that day? He went into the shed and almost killed that man, he was angry."
Calleigh shuddered at the memory. "I didn't know he did all that…."
Calleigh had just gotten out of the shower when she noticed Esteban getting out the tub, wincing at the assumed pain from his ankle. "Were you just watching me?" she asked. His coy smile was the only response she received. He, in all his glory, hobbled for a towel to dry himself before making his way to her at the sink. She having gotten used to his voyeurism, continued her skin routine as usual. It wasn't until he started massaging her neck that she became uncomfortable again.
"Do I disgust you? Every time I touch you you flinch. What am I doing?" he looked to her hurt and she couldn't keep eye contact. The second she turned away he grabbed her and whipped her to face him.
"You don't disgust me, I told you… I have to get used to all this. I didn't expect you to touch me. I'm sorry" his eyes were dark with rage. She knew part of it must've been from the discomfort but still. "You're scaring me. I'm sorry, I'll work on it." she saw some of the anger recede but his movements seemed force. He leaned his head in and she followed suit, feeling the nausea bubble up. Their lips met once before he pulled her into him and they met again. This time he was forcing himself on her and she complied not knowing how he'd react.
His tongue soon joined the onslaught and a moan from him told her he's getting close to losing all control. She pulled back slightly and he growled but still allowed her to breakaway. Stealing a peck on her cheek, he wobbled out the bathroom. By the time she finished their breakfast had arrived and he was nowhere in sight.
"Ah so mi hijo was angry and in pain? Sounds about right. Don't worry, I'll speak to him. NO need to be afraid, he wears his heart on his sleeve. But I suggest you try and initiate more contact with him at least. It'll be easier for you to get used to his presence and he'll get the physical intimacy he's been craving. For now, get some sleep."
She nods and settles into the blankets. It was getting easier to get used to Esteban but she still isn't sure how she'll handle being around the team. As long as she's on her best behavior she can protect them from the Navarros. It's only been three weeks yet it has felt like a day. She isn't even sure how she's made it this long. But if Diego was watching her so keenly, then Esteban and Abuela must be too.
