Chapter Four (The Concert): Playing with Wolves

"I'm with Steve, Holy Fuck. Dad?"

"Brandon we can discuss it later, but right now let's watch your sister's big debut." Brandon was not having a bar of that and looked at me with a questioning glare.

"When did she tell you?"

Trying to pacify him so I could get back to focusing on Raven I spoke the truth, though avoided mentioning that I would of been told most likely in days from when I found out. "Jones she didn't, Rolling Stone Magazine did the honours. Well I guess she did the honours unintentionally through her interview."

His voice carried an air of disbelief, "I read that article fifty times Andrea was obsessed with trying to figure out if we could crack the reveal-"

"Her and every other reporter."

He was not buying it. "There was nothing in there it was all too general."

I smirk at him. "How many times do I need to tell you no one knows my-" I rub my finger, "no one knows her better than me?"

"I beg to differ." I raise an eyebrow to Roy, he eventually concedes. "Fine you know Brenda, but Raven the onstage version she's my creation. The walk, the hips, the arm gestures, how she engages with the band, and then wait till she speaks to the crowd. Look how my girl is moving she is going to make an amazing actress, she is embodying the essence of a rock star right now." She truly was. She looked incredible on stage, sounded amazing.

This morning she had been a nervous wreck, the pressure was epic and had gradually grown each day since we had helped the gang cover the Hollywood sign; when we had finally let go and closed the door on high school taking only the good memories with us. Not even a walk on the private beach by the house this morning could calm her. She eventually insisted on going into the Bowl ridiculously early, even before the guys were due for sound check. She felt she needed to get into character.

It was a character she had perfected over the months and one I have to acknowledge Roy crafted in order to help her tap into the emotions of the music she had made. She had forgiven me for the summer, had moved past the deceit so recalling those feelings to give the songs meaning was difficult. When Roy came out from London and started reviewing the videos she had made in her studio of potential set lists he immediately saw the problem, and why no set ever felt right to her. She had no story, the songs needed her emotions to give them that extra bit of magic and they couldn't just be randomly put together in any order. This album if anything was our story, her therapy, and therefore the songs needed context. The concert needed a clear narrative and she needed to channel all of the emotions she had felt. It was set to be a painful journey for the both of us, but under Roy's direction I was confident she would make it work, without opening any closed wounds.

"Good evening LA! Thank you for coming out tonight for our first concert." She pauses while the crowd cheers. "I'm Raven-" she is cut off by another crowd uproar, "and this is my band." She walks to the back of the stage, "we have Chris on drums. I am yet to find a piece of music he doesn't know," he does a little drum solo. She then moves to the left of the stage were a grand piano sat, "we have AJ here on the piano though you'll see tonight the man has never found a instrument he doesn't like." As she walks over to Paul, AJ play's the start of a classical piece she turns her head back and sasses him, "AJ wrong concert," he keeps going. Paul then starts playing the classical piece on his guitar but begins to pick up the tempo to turn it into a more rock vibe showing off for the crowd, "and this ladies and gentleman is Paul on guitars, as you can tell he is really shy." Chris begins to pick up their beat and the guys jam for a bit as Bren or should I say Raven moves to the side of the stage to introduce the backing vocals for the concert. She did her own backings on the album but she refused to use any recordings everything had to be live so she needed backing singers for a few songs.

As she moves around the stage I notice the change, Roy is right Raven does move differently. She is completely in character appearing at ease on the stage in front of seventeen thousand people. There is none of the nerves she had in Vegas hoping the crowd would like her song, when she sat on the steps of the lounge room at Thanksgiving afraid to look at us as her song played, or when David released their third collaboration at the Grammy's while she sat with all of us on her parents couch wringing her hands. She is owning that stage no nerves insight.

When she makes it back to the front the guys immediately stop. "Well I've had a bit of year and tonight I thought I'd tell you guys all about it, but I'm going to need some friends to help me a long the way." David walks out then.

"Bonjour did someone call for me?" The crowd starts screaming again.

"Bonjour pouvez vous m'aider avec cette chanson?"

He comes over and kisses her hand. "Of course, I'd love to play our first song." He quickly moves over to his decks.

"So I guess my year started when I found out my boyfriend cheated on me with my best friend," she pauses as the crowd loudly boo's my actions. I spare a quick glance at Kelly she is bright red, "well it's more accurate to say my ex boyfriend, he won't be holding that title again." The uncomfortable shifting around me tells me the gang and our family don't know how to take that announcement. I breathe deep and steel myself, this was going to be a fun journey.

"But you know that's why you should always be careful when you play with wolves." As she finishes the last word, David begins the beat of their first number one.
