CH 6
She shook her head as she walked to the open door "Dean can see you now, please come in."
"Thank you ma'am." Robert said as she watched the family walk into the office.
"Cindy it is good to see you again, is there anything I can get for any of you?"
"We are fine thank you."
"That will be all Jeannie" she closed the door and returned back to her desk when Robert and Cindy sat down.
"Dean Adams, this is my husband, Robert."
"Hi it nice to meet you Robert" they shook hands.
"You too Mr Adam."
"Right in your grandmother's Will Cindy, she left all the family photos and jewelry to you."
"Yes I know and I have got them thanks."
"That's good the other thing is your grandmother left you some money she told me when she changed the Will saying that you deserve every cent of it. And that you are happy with your family and your job and that you never cared about money from an early age."
"I know my grandmother said that I am like my mother in so many ways."
"That's what she also told me and she got into trouble with you about a house she bought for you and your family" Cindy smiled.
"Yes, I told her off and said to her if she was any younger I would be giving her a toothbrush duties, she just laughed at me."
"What are tooth brush duties" Dean asked.
"Cleaning the toilet with a toothbrush, it an armed forces way of punishment" Robert said.
"Ah, I understand now," he said smiling, then said. "The money was transferred into your account this morning."
"How did you get my account number?" Cindy asked in shock.
"When your grandmother was visiting you a few months ago, she took one of your deposit slips from your account."
"That sneak, I knew she was sneaky but I didn't know how sneaky she was" Cindy said.
"Now you know, would you like to know how much she left to you."
"No, I don't know."
"Cindy" she turned to Robert "no matter how much it is, we will have to let the navy know."
"I know Robert" she turned to Dean.
"Ok" he picked up a sheet of paper and looked at it "Your grandmother Mary Ross left you one billion, eight hundred million and thirty five dollars and fourty three cents." Robert turned to Cindy to see what her reaction was going to be. He knew that her grandparents were rich when he was growing up and knew that they were multi-millionaires.
"Ok, did she leave anything to my brothers and sister" asked Cindy.
"She did, they all get one million dollars each."
"One million not one hundred million." Cindy said, confused.
"When Mary changed her Will after returning from Cairns, the money that was supposed to go to them she gave it to different charities all but one million each."
"Why did she do that" Robert asked.
"Because of them continuously hounding her for money, until she got sick of them, she did what granddad said in his will" Cindy said with a small smile.
"Yes, she did and she added the clause in the paperwork that they sign before getting the money."
"Clause?" Cindy said thinking then she giggle causing Robert turn to her.
"Cindy what is so funny" asked Robert as she turned to him to explain.
"The clause is that when my brothers and sister sign the papers and received the one million dollars, they agree that they can't contest grandma's Will."
"Is she right?" Robert turn to Dean.
"They can't?"
"No they can't and they can't take Cindy to court either."
"Really, wow. I didn't know that."
"Now you do" They talked for another ten minutes while Cindy filled out the paperwork.
When they were finished, they walked out of Dean's office pushing the stroller with them. They went to a cafe for lunch for the five of them and talked about what happened in the Dean office. Then afterwards, Cindy went to change the twins diapers while Robert took their son to the men's toilets. When they met up outside the toilets, they left to do some shopping then return back to the hotel for the night.
The next day they flew back to Cairns. While Paul, Alex, James and Kelly showed up at the retirement home and knocked on the door and waited. When there was no answer, they continued to bang on the door.
"Come on Grandma we know you're in there, open up" Kelly said yelling.
One of the residents who was new to the retirement home and had only been there for two weeks walked over to them "Excuse me, who are you looking for?"
"Our grandmother Mary Ross" James said, then Paul knocked on the door again.
"It is no good, that unit has been empty for days" They looked at her.
"What are you talking about, our grandmother lives here."
"Your grandmother passed away days ago, I heard it was her heart."
"Do you know what day it happened" Alex asked.
"Sorry I don't, it happened when I was in hospital" then she turned and walked away.
"The money grandmother's lawyer gave us, that was our inheritance. Why didn't he tell us that grandmother was dead" Kelly said.
"Let's go and ask him," Paul said, walking back to his car.
When they arrived in Dean's office, he saw the four of them walking towards him angry "Why didn't you tell us that our grandmother was dead and the money you put in our account was the inheritance" Paul said.
"Where the rest of the money?" Kelly said yelling at him.
"Come into my office," Dean said calmly. They walk into his office and close the door.
Then he walked around and sat down in his chair. "Why was there only one million dollars in each of our accounts."
"I was following your grandmother's instructions to the letter" explained Dean.
"What letter, where did all the money go?" Alex said.
"Remember your grandfather's Will."
"Yeah what about it" James said.
"In your grandfather's will it states that every time you hounded your grandmother for money, she had to give so much to charity till there was one million dollars left for each of you. That is what she has done in the past five years every time you went go to see her, it was about the money and nothing else."
"Where is the rest of the money that granddad left to her" fumed Max.
"She gave it to her granddaughter."
"I'm her granddaughter" Kelly said yelling. Dean sat back in his chair.
"You have got to be joking, Cindy? Grandma doesn't know where she is" Paul said, realizing that he almost forgotten his other sister whom he hasn't seen or heard from in over seven years.
"In fact, she does and she has been keeping in contact and even spent six weeks with her earlier this year. The entire time since Cindy left the house as a teenager, she has never once asked for money even the whole time Mary stayed with her."
"Do you know where she is" Alex asked.
"Yes I do and I am not telling you but she did say just in case you ask is that it up to you to find her yourself."
"Don't worry we will find her and find out how much grandma left her" they turned around and walked to the door.
"If you do find her, my advice is don't try to take her to court because you will lose" they stopped and turned to him, "Meaning what?" they all questioned Dean.
"Remember the papers you signed and I said to you all to read it first?"
"Yeah but we were interested in the money. Why what was in it?"
"There was a clause in there that you agree that you won't contest your grandmother's Will and you accept the amount of inheritance that was given to you."
"Your lying" James said.
"Ask your lawyers, they were each sent a copy of Mary's Will and the relevant paperwork you all filled out and signed." they looked at each other then turned around and walked out the door slamming it shut behind them.
A few seconds later his security walked in "Everything ok?"
"Yeah, they are not happy with what I told them," remarked Dean.
"I noticed, coffee?"
"Yes thanks" she walked out the door closing it behind her.
A month later Mike took his promotion and a shore posting, when Cindy heard about it from Robert she was smiling. The next day she showed up at NAVCOM in her uniform since she just finished her shift. She smiled when she saw Mike and walked over to him since he was talking to a lieutenant. He saw her and smile to her then finish talking to the lieutenant then walk over to her.
"Cindy"
"Commander Flynn, congratulations on your promotion sir."
"RO told you?"
"Yes he did."
"Please come into my office," suggested Mike.
"Thanks" they walk towards his office.
"Have you got time for a chat?"
"Yes I finished my shift half an hour ago."
"Ok" they walked around and into his office where they sat down at talked.
"Are you pleased you took the promotion."
"I didn't want to but Kate did say it does have its advantages" Cindy giggled
"Yes it does. The rules don't apply anymore since your here and she on Hammersley."
"She told me that also."
"Well there you go and when Hammersley is in port, question is which place, hers or yours?"
"Meaning?"
"Dinner, romantic night, leaving the next morning …" suggested Cindy.
"Oh, that'' he said smiling.
"Well there you go and who knows wedding bells could happen in the future."
"Never thought that far ahead."
"Come on Mike, you have known Kate for a long time and she is not getting any younger."
"Meaning what exactly?"
"Her biological clock."
"A family?"
"Yes, she thirty-two years old Mike, the older she gets less chances of getting pregnant unless she has help in that area if she has problems conceiving."
"You really think so."
"Don't you want to have children?"
"Yes."
"Well then, you have got a lot of thinking to do as well talk to Kate about it."
"Thanks I will."
"Good" she stood up then Mike did.
"Are you doing anything on Friday night."
"No we have got nothing planned why?"
"Would you like to come around for dinner and we can talk, better then than while at work."
"Good idea."
"OK see you at six."
"OK six it is."
"Great see you then" then she walked out of his office and NAVCOM and headed home.
