The Captain of the Quinjet signalled to let them know that they were landing on the seemingly abnormally large aircraft carrier. The two super soldiers prepared for landing before being greeted by the bright sun that reflected off the ocean as the doors opened. Agent Coulson lead the way as the two of them exited side by side. It had been a while since either of them had a view quite like this, and it was refreshing to say the least. "Agent Romanoff, this is Captain Rogers and The Agent," Coulson said with a curt nod. Agent Romanoff in question was a small woman but something about her stature gave off an assertive and mysterious presence. Her eyes were filled with a playful fire that matched the fury of her red hair. She smiled at Steve knowing exactly who he was but her eyes narrowed slightly when engaging with Johann's. She didn't know him, and she didn't like that she didn't. She had heard rumours of Roger's time when he arrived in the present but nothing concrete, she suspected Fury kept it completely under wraps for a reason. Johann equally did not like the look she gave him and an angry glare flashed across his blue eyes, her stare felt like it was penetrating his very soul, and he despised it greatly. Steve gave a small awkward smile before noticing their exchange quickly speaking to break the tension.
"Ma'am?"
"Hi," Her eyes went straight to Steve again and the tension quickly dissipated. "They need you on the bridge," she continued glancing to Coulson who smiled and quickly scampered off. The two of them walked together with Johann trailing behind as they moved towards the railing. "There was quite the buzz around here hearing that you were found in the ice. I thought Coulson was gonna swoon. Did he ask you to sign his Captain America trading cards yet?" A scoff came from Johann in utmost disgust at the sound of trading cards pertaining to the likes of Captain America.
"Trading cards?" Johann spat with a quick exhale as he stifled a laugh and snarky comment towards the man in question. Steve turned around swiftly and gave him a look of annoyance. He didn't want them to seem entitled and he wasn't in the mood for Johann's attitude when they were meant to be making a good impression. Natasha smiled in response, she could tell these two knew each other for a while. She was also prepared for this snarky attitude, she's seen it many times before.
"Yes, they're vintage, he's very proud." She said with a smile before her eyebrows raised at the sight of Bruce Banner. Bruce, however, was completely oblivious to the world. There were so many noises and sights with soldiers jogging in formation. It was a very busy and stressful environment, one he felt he could, but was not keen to handle. Steve looked over at the doctor, remembering him from the videos.
"Dr. Banner," he said with a comforting smile noticing how frazzled the man looked. He extended his hand and gave him a firm handshake. Banner seemed shocked by the gesture and cautiously shook his hand back.
"They told me you'd be coming," Banner spoke with a hint of admiration in his voice. Meeting a living relic was rare, especially one he studied hard to emulate. Resent sat in the back of his mind as he remembered the outcome of his own experiments.
"Word is you can find the tesseract?" Johann slid forward looking down at the doctor inquisitively, his eyebrow raised curiously. Banner looked up at the intimidating man, something about him seemed very familiar. He took note of his voice and knew that he had heard it somewhere before.
"Is that all you know about me?" Banner asked back his voice had a challenging tone to it, not appreciating the intimidation.
"The only word we care about," Steve said with a smile stepping in front of Johann to diffuse the situation again. He was going to be having a few words with him later.
"You know, you speak quite forceful for someone who no one knows," Banner said glancing over Steve's shoulder at Johann. 'Oh no,' was all Steve thought as he could feel the angry energy radiate behind him. The angry energy was nothing to the fury in the man's blue eyes. He looked as if he would throw the doctor off of the ship himself. Something about Johann's response seemed to confirm something in his mind and he smiled. Natasha wandered back over to the trio with a coy smile as she looked over the edge of the helicarrier.
"Gentleman, you may wanna step inside in a minute. Its gonna get a little hard to breathe."
"This is a submarine?" Steve said with shock but never removing his protective hand that had situated itself on Johann's chest subconsciously. Johann looked over the edge into the water, confused as to how an aircraft carrier would be a submarine. To him, that simply didn't make sense.
"I don't believe so. They wouldn't want me in a submerged pressurised metal container." Banner noted as the three of them slowly etched closer to the edge. Steve finally removed his protective measures as he stared in awe at the helicarrier's shifting parts. The ship slowly began to lift in the air as large engines revealed themselves on the edge of the ship. "Oh no, this is much worse."
The four of them finally moved inside and made their way toward the bridge. Steve and Johann walked side by side into the glorious bridge that was filled with people and the various computers required to operate the ship. "Gentleman," Fury said turning to face the two of them with a welcoming gaze. Steve seemed to absently reach into his pocket and count out ten dollars before handing it to Fury gliding past him. Johann stopped and watched Steve hand him the money. Fury looked at him with a certain look, knowing that he had impressed him. He was right, Johann was very much impressed, but he was still fuming over the previous exchange with Banner. He rolled his eyes and reached into his pocket and grabbed five dollars and handed it to him. "The bet was ten," Fury said with a glance.
"Sorry, I don't remember making any sort of bet, you have me confused with my American counterpart," Johann said with a sly smile and nod as he sauntered away from the director. Fury chuckled to himself pocketing the money before reaching his hand out to Banner offering a handshake.
Steve and Johann stood at the helm where Fury's main controls were. They both were just staring intently at every small piece of technology. Steve was in shock, and Johann was trying to decipher what everything was for. "It needs a chair," Johann said looking down at where they were standing. Steve looked over at him confused then stared down at the floor also.
"Maybe it's more comfortable to stand if you wanted to sit you can just sit there," Steve chimed in as he gestured to the seats behind him. He then realised that he had been so lost in awe at everything that he didn't discipline Johann for earlier. "Not like that matters if we aren't on this ship long enough to need to sit down." His voice changed to the seriousness which was meet with a teenager-like grown from Johann who rolled his eyes "No, don't you ignore me this time, we need them to like us and you're not making that any easier Jo- … Agent." His arms folded across his chest.
"Why don't you try playing as the idiot and see how you like it. Everyone is in love with you, it's so tiring," Johann shot back in a harsh whisper not wanting to draw too much attention to themselves. "You have no idea what it's like. It's infuriating." It would be obvious to everyone, but Steve, that Johann was clearly jealous of the attention. However, it was not the attention of acknowledging who Steve was that bothered him. It was the admiration everyone had towards him that set him off. Steve was his foe, his arch-enemy, he was his to annoy and his to admire.
"Oh I'm sure your ego can take a small hit every now and then," Steve harshly whispered back getting right into his face. He wasn't going to let Johann's childish behaviour compromise their mission just because he wanted to be the big boss again. While they were absorbed in each other's eyes Agent Sitwell caught a lead on Loki, noticing a power serge matching that of the cube.
"We've got a hit."
"Location?" Asked Coulson swiftly.
"Stuttgart, Germany. 29, Konigstrasse. He's not exactly hiding."
"You two," Fury called out to the super soldiers who snapped their gaze towards them. "You're up." Steve nodded in response and left Johann trailing behind him.
They arrive at the scene a few paces away. Captain America was styling his original uniform with a few tweaks. Johann in a similar body suit but pure black with red embellishments. When he first saw his uniform he knew that it was some sort of throw-back to what he used to wear, or some cruel joke of what he used to be. He nodded towards Steve as they decided to flank the enemy. The enemy in question was giving a huge spiel about what humanity should be. While Steve was honing in on his words with contempt, Johann was shocked at how much Germany had changed. Everything was so modern, and yet he still had that same sense of contempt at everything.
"Look to your elder, people. Let him be an example." Loki called out menacingly above the crowd as he directed his sceptre towards the man ready for execution. Steve leapt out of the shadows and crouched in front of the man, the shield blocking the blast.
"You know, the last time I was in Germany and saw a man standing above everybody else, we ended up disagreeing," Steve said turning to face Loki shield ready in hand. Johann was about ready to join Loki's side at the comment but he knew that would get him nowhere in his quest for the tesseract. If he has learned anything, the ones who use brute force to achieve their goal, normally end up losing.
"The soldier. A man out of time," Loki said
"I'm not the one who's out of time," Steve said defiantly as he glances up at the sky where Natasha swung in with the Quinjet ready to fire.
"Loki, drop the weapon and stand down!" Natasha called out over the ship's PA system. With a coy smile, he sent a bright beam of blue towards the Quinjet. Natasha quickly ducks out of the way, giving Steve enough time to throw his shield at Loki. Steve sprinted up to Loki letting his fist fly in a swift punch to the foe's face. The punch didn't seem to phase the god as he swung his sceptre back at the super soldier. They engaged in a battle of arms as they both landed punches on each other, Steve's shield was tossed to the side in the process. However, it was Loki who came out on top when he gave one swift swing of his sceptre and sent Steve flying across the courtyard. Steve obviously dazed by the fight stayed on the ground, allowed Loki enough time to move up to him and direct his sceptre at his head.
"Kneel," Loki said in a cruel voice as he glared down at his inferior enemy. There was silence for a moment as the two of them didn't exchange any blows.
"Not today!" Steve smiled back at Loki as he noticed his German counterpart had grabbed his shield and flung it toward Loki knocking him dazed. Steve assisted by jumping to his feet and roundhouse kicked Loki in the face. The two of them stood on opposite sides of Loki who glanced between them furiously. He held his sceptre firmly in his hand and went to aim it, Johann before loud music began blaring from the PA system of the Quinjet. A sudden burst of light shot between them directly into Loki's chest as the cause of the music dived into the scene. A bright red suit of metal armour landed in between them, it glowed from the various compartments and weapons it had attached to it. The owner of the suit? A man, known as Tony Stark.
"Make your move, Reindeer Games," Tony said with a hint of snark in his voice. Steve jogged up to join him ready for whatever Loki may do next. To his surprise, Loki put his hands up in surrender. "Good move."
"Mr Stark."
"Captain," Tony said with a quick glance towards Steve, "and… you?" He said with a short look at Johann who just glared back at him. "Tough crowd," Tony muttered to himself. The four of them headed into the Quinjet, Loki was swiftly put into cuffs as they boarded the aircraft.
The ride heading back to the base was silent. Steve and Tony paced next to each other before exchanging small words. Johann wasn't listening to them however, his eyes were fixed on Loki. Loki, one of the Norse gods he read about and admired, was the biggest disappointment in his life. The god of trickery was nothing but a child. He did not match any description that was written about him, he looked feeble, despite that not being the case. His eyes narrowed as pages upon pages of old books and texts scrolled in his mind, time completely wasted. Loki noticed the man was staring at him and he stared back equally curious. He knew most Earth heroes, but this one's history alluded him, he wished he had his sceptre now but that was swiftly taken from him. They finally broke their stare when lightning sounded outside of the aircraft. Johann looked up and out of the window curiously before his eyes shifted back to Loki, whose expression said fear. "What, scared of a little lightning?"
"I'm not overly fond of what follows," Loki replied before surveying his surroundings again. The lightning got worse, as did the turbulence felt by the passengers. The sudden strike of bad weather was odd to all of them, but their prisoner who knew exactly what had caused it. Suddenly a loud crash sounded followed by a hard thump on the roof of the jet. Tony and Steve sprang into action grabbing their various headgear and gadgets. Johann stayed put, he wasn't about to get into another fight over this pathetic god twice in one day. No, he'd let the heroes do what they were best at, which was jumping head first into fights.
Tony strut up to the door of the Quinjet opening it. It was then revealed to them who their weather changer was. A large muscular man in strange off-worldish armour. He had long blonde hair and glistening blue eyes, which had fixed themselves upon one thing, Loki. Tony began to fire before the man quickly retaliated followed by him grabbing Loki by the throat and sending them both flying out of the aircraft. "
"Another Asgardian?" Natasha called out from the pilot seat. Johann became even more depressed at the notion that that was possibly Loki's brother Thor, who again, did not fit his description of the God.
"Think the guy's a friendly?" Steve called out to Tony who was already half-way out the door.
"It doesn't matter. If he frees Loki or kills him, the Tesseract is lost." He said as he moved to the edge of the door.
"Stark! We need a plan of attack," Steve said desperately as he finished preparing himself for the fight ahead.
"I have a plan, attack." With that, he shot out of the door diving straight towards the Asgardians location. Steve shook his head in anger before tearing the latches off of a parachute.
"I'd sit this one out Rogers," Said Johann with a small smirk on his face.
"I don't see how I can with you not willing to help us," Steve was over his foes games, they had a real pressing issue at hand and all he could do was sit there. Natasha glanced back at their exchange curious as to how this 'Agent' thought he could take a stance like that.
"Asgardians come from legends, you would be fighting gods," he said dismissively as he stared in front of him. Johann could feel Steve's angered glare, but he knew he would have no time to lecture him now.
"There's only one God," Steve spat at Johann, remembering a time where the German referred to himself as a God, "and I'm pretty sure he doesn't dress like them." With that, he ran towards the exit and leapt out of the jet. Johann sighed and for safety, Natasha closed the back door after they left. She angled the Quinjet a safe distance away, but also from a vantage point where she could see the whole fight. She believed in their combined ability to face the two god's, but she didn't remove her eye from the battle for one second.
"So, who are you really?" She asked who eyes fixed on the scene playing out below.
"Me? Oh, I'm a simple nobody, just someone dragged into a mess because they possess similar abilities to the great Captain America." His eyes were downcast as he thought about his rival, a sadness seeping into his chest. Who really is he? He was no longer the Red Skull, the tyrant, the god, the one who was going to rule the new free earth. Now he sits there, on a jet made in the future, a nobody, nameless.
"You obviously feel entitled to speak to Cap like that, you guys go to boot camp together? Or do you have a little more history than that," she emphasised the word history, she was connecting dots in her mind, but she was not going to make an assumption. His heart grew cold as he glared at the back of her head.
"What are you suggesting?" He answered coldly. Before she could answer him the fight was over and the others were brought back onto the Quinjet. It was a deathly silent ride home.
