District 6
"Kathren Gardner."
Katie had to wrestle her little sister back into line so she wouldn't volunteer, and the cameras filmed every bit of it.
When Katie's name was called, she started to walk to the stage already seeing her little sister Miranda pushing through the crowds, ready to volunteer. Katie broke into a run until she reached the 13-year-old and pushed her so aggressively she fell into the girls around her.
When Katie reached the stage, the escort was immediately interested by her and what had just happened, so she started up a conversation.
"Kathren, who is that?" the escort said in a fake capital accent.
"Um, it's Katie," she said first. "And that was my sister."
"And what was your sister doing, Katie?" she asked, as if her and everyone else in Panem didn't know what Miranda was doing.
"I think she was going to volunteer," Katie answered.
The cameras were now going back and forth between the escort and Katie, and Miranda, who was now crying while quietly whispering Katie's name.
"You did not want her to volunteer," the escort noted. Honestly, Katie wasn't sure if this woman could be more Captain Obvious.
"No, I did not."
"You want to compete?" She asked
"No, I just didn't want her to." Kaitie responded
"Couldn't have you little sister taking all the glory, now could we?" the escort said, while smiling the fakest smile Kaitie has ever seen.
"Um, sure?" Katie was not sure what else to say. She wanted to come back to her sister and her parents, and the Capital loved it when they had tributes that wanted to be in the games. That's why they loved the career districts, the ones that wanted to be there to compete for the glory always got the most sponsors. So, maybe if the rich Capital citizens thought she wanted to compete, they would sponsor her. Katie locked eyes with Miranda and tried to tell her her plan. Miranda nodded to show she understood; they always had been really close and could just kind of tell the other what they were thinking through eye contact.
Katie really wanted to win so she could come back to Miranda.
"I swear Conner, if you make a scene like that girl just did, I will practice for these games on you. Got it?"
The escort was looking around, wondering why the person she just called was not coming.
"Travis Stoll," she read again.
The reason Travis was not coming was not because he was hiding (which he wanted to do, but he wasn't), and it was not because he was scared either (even though he was quite scared.) No, it was because his younger brother Connor was hanging on to his wrist so tight Travis would have to drag Connor with him on the stage, which he was not about to do.
"Connor let go!" Travis was trying not to call attention to himself.
"But... Travis," he said with a desperate look in his eyes.
"No, listen. We'll talk in the Justice Building in a minute, okay?"
Connor looked like he had more to say, but Travis ripped himself away and started running for the stage.
"So, he finally decided to show up," that dumb escort said, like all of television was not showing his conversation with Connor live.
Travis just nodded and walked over next to the other tribute.
"Looks like we have a few things in common," the girl tribute, Katie, said.
Travis knew Katie. Well, not really, but he had seen her in school. He always thought she seemed like a cool person.
"What do you mean?" he asked her.
"We both have a little sibling we need to come back to," she said, gesturing to the crowd to represent Miranda and Connor.
"You know neither one of us is winning," Travis said. He always has been more of a realistic person than an optimistic one.
"I don't know about you, but I want to see my sister again," she said.
"I would love to come back to Connor, I just don't think I am going to outlast 6 careers," Travis admitted.
"Never say never," Katie said so quietly, Travis barely heard her.
And... there's chapter 6! If you liked it, please review, favorite, and/or follow! See you for the reaping of district 7...
