You might ask, why? The answer is simple. FATHERLY!HICTOOTH YAS. My inspirations for that fic. This fic was written just because I couldn't find any modern AU of that. My thoughts on how would that look.

Wiping his eyes, Toothless forced himself to move, finally. Was it the child's crying for sure? He squirmed his eyes, achingly. With them, he gazed around but witnessed no mother and stroller nearby. He has gone insane! Eventually, he shivered hearing the cry again. Each of his limbs was considering the situation odd. Some of them wanted to drag him away, but it was his heart that halted him from escaping.

Inhaling, he listened to it and shakily moved forward into the dangerous, mysterious alley. While he passed the trash cans, peeking behind them, he narrowed his eyes at the little, tiny box, wet from the rain already. It seemed the screams were coming right from it and swallowing he stepped toward it and kneeled just in front of him.

Already guessing what was inside it, Tobias shivered opening it. His eyes widened at the view of the baby, an infant, the tiny boy inside of it. He never saw such a fragile child, he panted, terrified. Wrapped in the thin material, the boy was crying at the top of his lungs, squirming in the place, while his eyes teared up, probably terrified.

In the beginning, Toothless was frozen and attempted to slow down his breathing, at least. It was the most vicious thing he had ever witnessed, he suffocated. How old he even was? He stroked his forehead, not taking his eyes away from the little body. Someone brought him straight from the hospital here?!

Panicked Tobias bit his fingers one by one, wincing. He wanted to help, but how? He leaned forward and tilted his head, gaping at, the unaware of his presence, baby. He had never had contact with children, nonetheless such small. While the screams began hurting his ears, inhaling loudly, he listened to his common sense. Choosing the emergency number on the phone, he put it on a speaker and placed it nearby.

"Nine nine one, what's your emergency?" The female voice sounded on the phone, and consequently, everywhere around.

"I found a little boy," he swallowed, scratching his neck. "Infant, I-I think," he frowned when he stuttered. Since when did he stutter? He exhaled and loosening himself, continued. "It's raining here, heavily. He might have caught something bad."

"I understand, but I assure you everything is going to be okay," she hummed, while in the background was heard the sound of the clicked keyboard. "What address it is? I will send somebody to you."

"Bork's street," Tobias peeked at the entrance of the alley and frowned, thoughtfully. "It should be a fourth alley while driving through it from the south."

"Okay, I called an ambulance. What's your name?"

"T-Tobias," he grunted. "Tobias Night."

"Tobias, there are some things I'll ask you to do, okay?"

"Of course," he straightened at his spot and inhaled. "What do I have," he frowned, glimpsing by the boy's feet a piece of paper. He took it and squirmed his eyes, reading it. "Ma'am, I found his birth certificate," he blinked, shocked. "Henry Hiccup and no surname. He was born twenty-nine of February. That's all. The rest is cut out."

"I'll look for him in the documentation, but first, you said there is heavy rain, right?"

"Y-Yes," Tobias winced. "He's one month old," he mumbled, startled. "I don't have any experience with kids, not even saying about the ones that have less than six years."

"I'm sure you'll manage it. Initially, check if he's cold for me, please."

"Right away," he exhaled calmly, pulled his hand toward the boy, and applied his knuckles to his forehead.

Holy shit, he's cold as ice, he frowned and fretted when the boy flinched in direction of his warm hand. Placing it whole to his forehead, he stroked it with a thumb and soothed the baby.

"What's going on out there? Is everything okay?"

"He's cold," he drew his hand carefully to the boy and grabbed his tiny, slim hand into his ten-times bigger. "Like freezing."

"Would you mind holding him? You might share with him a body temperature."

"I never held a baby."

"That's not a problem. I'll explain everything."

"Alright," he nodded to himself. "What should I do?"

"Firstly, could you take off your jacket?"

"Jacket?"

"Yes. You'll need something to cover his with. Although, since there is rain, maybe it'll be better if you don't. You might get sick."

"Miss, don't bother about me," Toothless with a swift move took off his jacket, and placed it on his knees. "It's not my life which is in danger," he leaned forward and did like an operator said, feeling a tiny neck, wide as his thumb's length, into his hold. "Continue, please."

"Of course. With another one, you have to support his spine. It's really important. When you'll be ready, bring him to himself."

Gritting his teeth, he closed his eyes momentarily, before following the orders and afterward keeping the tiny body next to his. Tobias looked downward he breathed out relief, witnessing a little boy snuggling into his chest, while his cries calmed down into a silent sobbing.

His heart raced and he calmed it while looking at the boy's soothed expression. Toothless pressed him even closer when the boy demanded it, turning his head to his skin. Eventually, even so, his eyes teared up again and instinctively Tobias began rocking him.

"Boys, is something wrong?"

"I'm not sure," he hissed. "I'm holding him, but he's still upset."

"Maybe he's still cold? Have you covered him with that jacket?"

"No, but I don't have a free hand,"

"Will you be able to hold him in one arm?"

"I can give it a try," he tensed his shoulders. "Although, I don't know if it's the case of coldness. Maybe, he's frightened? Afraid?" He swallowed, nervously. "Is he afraid of me?"

"I'm sure it's not that, Tobias. I understand you're scared, but he might sense your fright and be startled himself. Try to ease yourself, for him, at least. Okay?"

"Okay," he exhaled, nodding. "Right."

"Place him on your arm, remember about the spine and hand, in the way which is the most comfortable for you."

Inhaling, he gazed at the boy and frowned concerned, detecting him crying loudly, hidden in his chest. He would never forgive himself if he didn't succeed, he positioned the boy, following the woman's commands. Toothless breathed out relieved seeing him fit perfectly in it, but also giggled, noticing a free space of his arm despite leaning on it boy's whole body.

Carefully, he took his jacket and encircled with it a boy, who gazed up at him, shocked by the new warmth around him. Staring at Toothless, the boy calmed down and sobbed, silently. Taken aback by the gaping child, Tobias's eyes widened while his back loosened.

"Now what?"

"I'm sorry Tobias, but that's everything for now. I can't do anything more and I have other calls, although I'll instruct you a few last things."

"I understand," he frowned, and tightening his grip on the boy, he loosened his tensed face. "What are them then?"

"Keep maintaining him warm. He must be calm, otherwise, he might become sleepy, and hence, fall asleep. No matter what, he can't fall asleep. There is a chance he won't wake up ever again. Did you understand everything?"

"I guess."

"Alright, good luck."

There was the sound of ended conversation and hearing it Tobias grumbled. How nice of the emergency operator, to leave him alone with a literal emergency on his own, he growled for the moment, but stopped, reminding himself he had more important things on his head than an irresponsible woman.

"It seems it's just you and me now, isn't it?" Toothless smiled weakly toward the boy, who glanced around and wailed. "What's wrong? Is something causing you pain?" He checked on him for any reason of his sudden distress but detected nothing but him looking around, scared. "Don't be afraid, it's okay," he pressed the boy closer to himself, blocking him from the view of his surroundings. "I'm here, Henry," he frowned when the little boy ignored him. "Henry," he repeated, crooning. "Henry Hiccup," his eyes widened when after a mocking full name call the boy gazed at him rapidly. "Hiccup," he blinked and soothed, beaming. "I'm here, Hiccup."

Thereafter, they stared at each other for a long moment. Toothless was grinning awkwardly, while simultaneously rocking Hiccup, who blinked at him interested. It was only eventually when Hiccup began coughing and sneezing, leaving him stunned.

"Bless you," Toothless chuckled anxiously but hissed when the startled boy began crying. "Buddy, it's okay, it's alright. Don't be scared," he winced when Hiccup coughed again and yelled, terrified.

He must have been still cold, he pressed his knuckles to Hiccup's cheek and gasped when his fingers felt like after touching ice. They needed to get closer, he closed his eyes and positioned his cheek on top of his head. Despite the act, Hiccup has been crying into his ear, provoking Tobias's squirm of eyes, but after the older boy embraced him with his second arm, he exhaled, shakily.

"That's right," he shushed while Hiccup sobbed, slightly. "Don't bother about anything. I'm here, and it's my job to take care of all of that," he rubbed his cheek against his head. "I'm here, buddy."

Pressing him closer to his chest, Hiccup got covered by him completely, protecting him from the outside world. Thereby, he loosened, breathing calmly and soundly. At the view, Toothless softened like he never did but then panicked, seeing him closing his eyes, sleepy.

"No, you can't go to sleep, buddy!" Tobias shook him awake and thereupon Hiccup screamed, startled.

Great job, you fucking idiot, Toothless snarled to himself and rocked Hiccup attempting to calm down a little boy, unsuccessfully. His heart broke in half, understanding his mistake, and hence, his guilt. Biting his lip, Tobias glanced around and brooded. Hiccup needed a distraction from sleep, he hummed stressed and his eyes widened with the idea.

Straightaway, he tightened his grip on Hiccup and leaned toward the backpack, which he took off while removing his jacket. For a moment there, he was digging through it, simultaneously rocking and shushing Henry, until he smiled after finding searched. Before showing the item to Hiccup, Toothless leaned to him, pressing his forehead lightly against his.

"It's okay, buddy," he shushed and Hiccup sobbed, loudly. "I didn't mean to scare you. It's alright. Everything is alright," he whispered into his ear and Henry exhaled, shakily.

Eventually, while Hiccup calmed visibly, his eyes started blinking tiredly again. Instead of panicking, Tobias's eyes squirmed in startle, but even so, he revealed a black, dragon, plushie, which he pulled out from the backpack moments ago. Toothless beamed, witnessing Henry being absorbed with it.

"Do you like it, buddy?" He chuckled, relieved. "I got it from my friend, Meatlug," he wrinkled his nose playfully while Hiccup blinked at it, fascinated. "Strange name, isn't it? Well, she made one for everybody from my team. These toys are us but as dragons," he grasped with his fingers plushie's paw and waved at Henry with it. "So, it's me," he rumbled, anxiously. "Do you like me?"

As a reply Hiccup followed with his eyes the toy, cooing cheerfully, and beamed when it landed on his stomach, positioned there by Toothless. There came a moment when Henry attempted to grab it, unsuccessfully because of his wrapped in material, also sore, arms. At the view, Tobias giggled, and his heart filled with joy.

Gaping at him, reminding himself of the reason for him being here, also understanding Hiccup must have been abandoned, his veins started popping while he frowned, furiously. Whoever dared to put him in that situation, as soon as he'll find them, was dead, he growled soundly, but calmed himself, stroking Henry's side.

Finally, Toothless straightened at the sound of the ambulance's siren nearby. Standing up carefully, he picked up his backpack and hang it against his shoulder, before he rushed toward the entrance of the alley. Just next to the curb stopped was an ambulance and from it came out the paramedic who moved toward him while noticing him.

"It's alright now, boys," the man polled his arms toward him, inviting Tobias to pass him the little bundle in his arms. "I'll take him from here. Great job."

Nodding, Toothless was about to do as the older man commanded, but before that he flinched, hesitantly. Will he ever see Hiccup again? He gritted his teeth, peeking down at Henry in his hold. He wanted to know if everything will end well for him, at least! Eventually, feeling Henry's shivers against his arm, he sighed and gave in. He still needed medical help.

Handing Hiccup to the paramedic he swallowed and afterward scratched his neck, anxiously. Forthwith, Henry cried soundly and hard, at top of his lungs. The man began rocking him, but the boy didn't give up on his screams and somehow only got louder. Instencitvy, Tobias moved ahead and placed his thumb against his forehead, stroking it. Both males were shocked when Hiccup soothed, staring at Toothless.

The mentioned boy inhaled and peeked at the man before him. "Would you mind if I go along with you?" He pressed his lips against each other. "I feel like I should stay with him a little bit more."

"Only if you don't mind, of course," the paramedic gave him Hiccup back and the boy snuggled into Toothless's chest, soothed by his presence. "Come on in," the man opened the back of an ambulance and helped Tobias get inside until the boy sat inside with the little bundle in his arms.

The ride went almost seamlessly, while there happened only a few, little incidents. There was a moment when Hiccup grew tired of the ride and began crying, and then, Tobiadd offered him a plushie, which took his attention. There was a moment when he was checked out by doctors, causing his sudden startle, and Toothless soothed him, with his presence and shushing.

Eventually, he started dozing off and while Tobias panicked, the doctors comforted him, insisting that Henry's life wasn't in danger anymore and that he was able to go to sleep, safely.

Thereupon, he nodded letting Henry do whatever he needed, but even so, he gaped at the falling asleep bundle in his arms with slight fright, but also happiness. It was momentarily after when the stress left his body and he breathed out, relieved.

At the hospital, all of them walked off the ambulance, and immediately Toothless was noticed by the nurse, who ran to him with a hospital bassinet. While she instructed him how to place in it the infant, he flinched again, and inhaling, he did as told. Just then, the nurse rushed with Hiccup inside the building, and without hesitation, he followed her.

Eventually, throughout hurrying through corridors, the woman with Henry stepped into the room and closed the door behind herself, leaving Toothless motionless before them. What he was even doing? He stared at them, panting. He shouldn't be there! Hiccup isn't his family or anyone close, he was a stranger to him.

Disregarding that, involuntarily he sat at the bench next to the door and leaned on the wall behind it. He wanted to know what will happen, he closed his eyes, sighing. He wanted to know if the boy was sleeping peacefully and if he was breathing calmly. He wanted him close. He couldn't leave now, he leaned forward, supporting his chin on his arms with their elbows on the knees. He cared.

A few hours passed and at about midnight he remained motionless, still. Assuring himself, that if he left he would never see Hiccup again, he didn't dare to take off his sight of the wooden door before him. His eyes began shutting exhausted and he wiped them, attempting to remain awake.

However, his head was dangerously getting lower and lower, while his limps loosened, tired. About the time his eyes closed and he couldn't open them again, somebody shook his shoulder and instinctively he straighten, surprised. Before him stood the ginger-haired woman with a bright, green. The white lab coat she wore, suggested that she was one of the doctors there.

"Good midnight, sir," she smiled brightly. "Are you waiting for someone?" She tilted her head when Tobias didn't respond, lost in thoughts. "I guess you must be Tobias?" She pulled her hand to him and giggled seeing his eyebags. "Amaya Maidenwing, but everybody calls me Atali here. I'm a doctor taking care of Henry."

Instantly, Toothless stood up, almost tripping himself doing so. "It's nice to meet you," he shook her hand and tsked. "I'm sorry for bothering you. I just wanted to know if everything is alright."

"That's nothing to be ashamed of, Tobias," she hugged her forearms. "I'm delighted someone took care of such a fragile boy and still does."

"Is he alright?"

"I assure you, Henry is just fine," Atali exhaled, tiredly. "Poor boy must get some sleep after such a terrible experience now. Although, I think you should just as well, won't you agree?"

"Just a few more minutes, please," he gaze at her and while she sighed, he looked to the side. "I can't leave him now," he sat down on his earlier spot, covering his face. "Not yet."

Inhaling, Atali placed at him sympathetically, before she sat next to him. "What happened to him was indeed cruelness," she peeked at him while he gaped at the ground. "Nobody deserves such a fate as abandoning. It must be the worst possible way to become an orphan," she blinked surprised when he gazed at her suddenly and troubled. "Is something wrong?"

"Well, the thing is," Toothless straightened, tensing his shoulders. "I am an orphan."

"Then you must know how hard it will be for him," she patted his forearm, and ignoring the urge to flinch away, he accepted the touch. "He's going to live through something, you have lived years ago, am I not right?"

"You're not right," he cocked his brows. "It's not the same."

"Why is that?"

"His future is way worse than mine past was," he gritted his teeth. "His parents dumped him and mine were nice enough to die while making me an orphan. He's going to live with that knowledge of being someone's burden for the rest of his life."

"I understand," she fidgeted her fingers. "However, he's lucky that he won't remember it. After all, he's too young to figure out what happened."

"His age doesn't matter," Tobias growled. "Someone will tell him the truth someday, no matter how long it'll be kept away from him," he exhaled angrily and peeked at Atali. "Are the police searching for his parents?"

"Even so the police found them, Henry is going to become an orphan," Amaya rumbled, sadly. "There is no way that court would let them keep on being parents."

"Obviously," he crossed his arms on his chest. "Despite it, there might be some relatives, his family, who could take care of him."

"Maybe, but I doubt they'll find them earlier than a week and it's the term of Henry being in the hospital," she furrowed. "After it passes, I'll be forced to transfer him to the orphanage and there is nothing I can do."

"Fuck," he mumbled under his breath.

There must be something that might be done, Tobias's leg shook while he tapped his foot into the ground and he gazed at the door. Inside that room was tiny, poor Hiccup which he hold in his arms and was assured by one glance on his face that he was the most innocent child he ever saw. Only monsters would put their child in such a spot, he snarled, furious.

Witnessing so, Atali patted his back, but this time he flinched, uncomfortably. "Police must find them," he squeezed the bridge of his nose with his fingers. "There must be some consequences."

"Police are searching," Amaya scratched his nose. "We gave them every possible information we got, so you shouldn't bother yourself,"

"Did they get the certificate?" He narrowed his eyes, thoughtfully. "It's the best clue. They should look into their data, compare it, check for children born the day of Hiccup's birth,"

"I guarantee you they are doing that," she frowned and fretted. "You can go home."

"I don't want to go home," he grumbled. "I want everything for Hiccup to end up okay. I want him to be healthy, find a good home, and I know I won't be able to know that if I go home because when I'll leave I won't ever see him again."

"You care about him deeply, aren't you?" Atali beamed when Toothless nodded, hesitantly. "On that note, I have a proposition," she dug through her pocket and passed to him a card. "Take it and come back here tomorrow. It's permission for the meeting," she chuckled when Tobias's eyes widened at the nice gesture. "You'd better go home. It must be late already," she stood up, but before walking off, she peeked at him last time. "See you tomorrow," she waved and moved forward.

Before she could disappear into a corridor, Toothless stood up rapidly. "Wait," he shouted and Amaya turned to him, confused. "Hiccup might find himself adoption parents, right?"

"Of course, but there can appear difficulties with that," she exhaled, sadly. "Problem is, Henry is in bad shape for now, he's fragile and we are guessing he was an early born."

"Why's that a problem?"

"It is a problem because such kids are more endangered with sicknesses," she peeked at the ground. "Also, the biggest issue is the fact Henry doesn't have a part of his leg. He's disabled. From an experience, I know such children don't have luck in finding a family. The complete opposite, actually," she hissed seeing Tobias nodding. "Irrespective of that, the future isn't set in stone. Maybe I'm wrong and within no time he'll find himself a loving family."

"Let's hope for that."

"Exactly," she grinned at him and Toothless returned it lifting the corner of his mouth. "Go home, Tobias. You must be tired psychically, but also mentally. Let yourself on the loose," she straightened, and turning around, she disappeared into the crowd of doctors.

Finally, inhaling, he moved forward toward the entrance of the hospital, but despite the knowledge of coming here tomorrow, he didn't feel any more relieved than he should've been. Making an effort to smile weakly at least, he failed and groaned to himself. He will see him tomorrow, he fought his thoughts to at last calm down his heart. He'll see him again.
