So I guess that I was spending WAY too much time on character introductions and went a bit overboard with it, this chapter is going to be the training day. Next chapter will be the Bloodbath.
Reyna threw knife after knife into dummies and targets, never once missing her mark. When she was done with the knives, she did the same with spears. Once that was done, she practiced with swords. When she was done with the swords... you get the picture.
The other Careers couldn't decide whether they hated her for being the best fighter out of them, or if they loved that she was on their team. Although they all had a silent agreement that once they got to the point where they had to split up. They were ganging up on and killing Reyna first. But that wouldn't be until after she did what they needed her for.
Octavian tried show off too. Not that he wasn't good, he was. The thing was that compared to the scrawny district 10 kids, he looked like the greatest fighter in Panem. Compared to Reyna, he looked like a joke.
The only one that stood close to Reyna was Clarisse. Her ability to throw a spear was astonishing. She watched the tributes from other districts keep taking glances over and she could almost hear them thinking, 'I hope I don't end up on the other end of her spear.'
Clarisse felt like she kept seeing her father in the corner of her eye watching her practice. Just like he did at home when she would make a good shot while practicing and she looked over at him to see if he was finally impressed and he would give the same answer every time, "Think that was good? Just wait until the target is moving." He always told her that girls were useless in the hunger games. That they stood no chance of winning without a male helping them and then letting them win. She was hoping to get some good kills in on television, maybe kill a few of the male tributes without any help. Just to show him.
Frank was strong. His main weapons were his hands. He could probably strangle someone, or even beat someone to death. The thing was that he couldn't really practice those things, and he didn't want to kill anyone anyways. He went to an area where someone was teaching the tributes to set traps. He walked over there and started learning how to do it. He probably looked pathetic compared to the other careers, but maybe this would come in handy later.
Rachel had assumed that she nobody trained as hard as she had. However, the moment she saw Reyna and Clarisse, her confidence about this whole deal was definitely going south. Maybe she should have waited a little longer before she volunteered... Nope. Cannot think like that. She would have to remain confident about this. Not like she had a choice, there was no going back now.
Percy had practice with weapons like tridents, but never with swords. He wasn't really sure what to do when Clarisse handed him a sword while they were practicing.
"I don't really do swords."
"Then what do you do?"
"Tridents."
"And there are totally a lot of tridents in the arena, stupid." She said sarcastically.
"Well..."
"What are you scared? Take the sword."
Percy took the sword from Clarisse. All of the careers were watching him and if he messed up, they would think he was a wimp. Hesitantly, he walked up to a dummy, swung the sword and in one fluid motion, cut the dummy's head off.
"See, not that hard." Clarisse pointed out and Percy tried to pretend that he wasn't a little scared of her.
Leo didn't want allies, nor did Annabeth. They both knew that going in. They were both smart enough to know that they stood no chance. Annabeth decided that she would try to make it past the bloodbath, but it would be up to fate after that. She would try her best, but she wasn't going to go to every training station and do everything she possibly could to win because what would she even do with the victory? There was probably someone in this room of 23 other people that had a family and a life to go back to. They deserved to have that; Annabeth wasn't going to be the one to take that away from them.
Leo decided that while he was here, he would do some training. Not because he wanted to kill every tribute he saw and win, but he wasn't going to waste days of training. And he might as well know how to do something if he was going to make his explosion. He wasn't sure what he was going to do to make sure he was remembered, but he'd have to figure out something out soon. It's not like he had forever to come up with something.
Leo decided to start first with learning how to start a fire. Interesting, isn't it? Everyone in district 3 hated him because they thought that he was a murderer who killed his mom by locking her in a shed and lighting it on fire, and here he was not even knowing how to light a fire.
When he got to that area there were two other tributes practicing lighting a fire, one was a boy, and one was a girl. Leo didn't know what districts they were from but they definitely didn't look like careers.
"So, what's you guy's names?" Leo asked.
"Jason, district 5." The boy, Jason said.
"Piper, district 12." Piper replied.
"Leo, 3"
The instructor caught Leo up on starting a fire. Once he was done explaining Leo tried it out and it immediately lit.
"You're a natural." Jason looked up surprised. He had been trying to do this for a couple of minutes now and failing hard.
Leo looked at the flame in front of him and all he could see was the shed, and the peacekeeper who lit it on fire. His mother's screams as she burned to death.
"Earth to Leo!" Piper exclaimed.
"Huh! Didn't hear you."
"Can you help us with starting the fire?"
"Oh, sure."
After Piper and Jason could both successfully start a fire Piper asked them, "I don't have an ally, I don't really like the boy from my district, so I was thinking..."
"I'm sorry, I already have an ally." Jason apologized, "My sister Thalia."
"And I'm not really going for the whole ally thing." Leo explained.
"Oh" Piper tried to hide her disappointment, "That's fine I totally understand."
Thalia wanted to believe that Jason had a chance. If one of the two of them were going to make it out, she hoped it would be Jason. She couldn't imagine going back home without her baby brother. She knew that they were both going to die. All it took was one look over at those girls from districts 1 and 2 for her to see they weren't making it. She trained for what she could though, because she would do anything to protect her little brother, and that meant anything. If that meant killing people, so be it.
Travis and Katie couldn't figure out which plants were poisonous and which ones were edible. There were way too many that looked way to much alike and they both came to an agreement that they were not going to be able to rely on plants for food in the arena if they didn't figure this out soon.
"So, this is either this," Travis pointed to a picture in a book of plants, he was talking about a plant that was on the table in front of them, "Or this." he said pointing to another plant in the book.
"Okay, what's the difference?" Katie asked.
"One is poisonous and the other is not."
"Big difference then."
"If this one has this stuff on the leaves, and so does this... maybe?
Kaity checked the label on the bottom of the plant.
"Hey that's right!" She yelled.
"Great! Now all we need to do is carry this book of plants around with us in the arena and we should be all set." Travis said sarcastically.
"You know," Kaity started, "We both kind of assumed that we were going to be allies in the arena. I just thought I should ask, are we allies?"
"Sure, if we both make it past the blood bath we'll be allies." Travis responded. Thinking how strange it was that he had just casually said, if we make it past the bloodbath. Interesting how willing people are to throw around the topic of death here like it was nothing.
Silena watched her boyfriend throw axes at dummies. He was pretty good. He hit his mark almost every time.
"Hey Silena, you want to give it a try." Charles called over.
"I don't think I'll be very good."
"Well you have to learn at least one weapon. You need to know something just in case something happens to me and you need to defend yourself."
"Don't say that!" Silena screamed. "You are not going to die on me!"
"Babe, there is only one victor, we can't both win."
"You said you would figure something out."
"I don't know what there is to figure out."
"You promised." She looked upset and the other tributes were starting to look at her.
"Well then I will, just trust me."
He really hoped he could figure something out, find a way to get them both home. However, he knew that the chances of that ever happening were very low.
"This is pointless." Kayla said for what seemed like the thousandth time that day and Austin was trying not to get annoyed.
"You're doing fine."
"No, it doesn't matter what kind of training we do, we're both going to end up getting stabbed to death by spear girl over there."
"You don't know that."
"Yes, I do!"
"Well then let's just lay here and wait for it to happen." Austin laid down on the floor to demonstrate this.
"You are really annoying sometimes, you know that?"
Austin didn't respond. He just got up and continued what he was doing.
"This is stupid." Kayla said.
Austin rolled his eyes at her.
"No, I mean us fighting is stupid. We are probably both going to end up dying but one of us is going to die first so one of us is guaranteed to lose the other and I'm not spending the time from now to then fighting with you."
"I agree." Austin responded as her words sunk in. One of them would probably have to watch the other die because they're planning on never leaving each other's sides in the arena, and one of them will have to die first.
Will wanted an ally, and who better to ask than the girl from his district.
"Um, Hazel?" Will asked, "Do you want to be allies in the games?" He asked quickly.
"I don't know you all too well, I don't know if I can trust you."
"I'm Will Solace, I'm from your district. I was going to be a doctor; that was before this whole games thing happened."
"You were going to be a doctor?"
"Yeah."
"Do you know much about healing stuff?"
"Yeah, I've been practicing with my dad's patients for years."
"Do you think you could teach me something?"
"Yeah!"
Will explained to her how to patch up an injury using stuff you would find outdoors.
"When he was done, he thought he would try his question one more time, "Do you think you know me well enough now to consider becoming allies?"
"You know what, sure" She said, "Not like I have anyone else."
Nico and Bianca were not training. They were sitting on the floor watching people train, or they were sometimes talking to each other. But they were not about to give the capital the satisfaction of having 24 tributes training hard so that they could win the games. Nico and Bianca were going to escape the arena, or at least that was the plan, so they didn't need to train. Bianca spent most of the day staring off into space and Nico fiddled with his small figuring that Bianca had stolen for him a couple of weeks ago. And that was entertaining enough for both of them.
Calypso wondered if one of the people in this room would be the one to kill her, or if she would just die of natural causes. She also wondered if she was going to kill anyone in this room. She didn't have an ally but she thought that waiting until the games have started to find an ally would be better. A lot of people make allies before the games and just end up dying in the bloodbath and Calypso was going to be smart about this. She would have to observe how everyone acts in the bloodbath and then decide if any of these people were good enough. The boy from district 3 seemed good. So did the boy from 4 but he was a career so that took him off of the list.
Honestly Calypso knew allies usually ended bad but sometimes they were useful, and Calypso really wanted to get back to district 11. Her father dies in a rebellion, Calypso wanted to start a rebellion of her own, but she would have to survive this first.
Grover had an idea. During training he would stalk each of the other tributes a little bit to find out who was the most dangerous, and then avoid them. There were so many cases in the past where tributes made alliances and their allies murdered them in their sleep. Grover didn't particularly want that. Throughout the day, Grover noticed that another tribute seemed to have the same idea as he did, the boy from district 12 had talked to most of the other tributes about something or other and nobody does that unless you're looking for information on people.
Then again, it did cross his mind that maybe this boy was doing something totally different, maybe he was looking for the easiest kills. Who would be the easiest to get rid of off the bat. Grover didn't know which one it was. But from the looks of it, Luke Castellan was every bit as dangerous as the careers.
Thank you for reading! Review what you thought of this chapter, and I'll see you guys for the bloodbath!
