The sound of the bell surrounded the whole building, announcing the beginning of the lunch break. With a confident gait, the teenage girl with colorful glasses on her nose, blond, natural hair, and chocolate, brown, furious eyes walked through the corridor.
Her feet were soundly bumping into the floor, just to stop herself by the bench, on which laying was a rather large, boy figure. Crossing her arms, she frowned and kicked the bench, informing mentioned teenager about her presence.
"Are you satisfied?!" She snarled at him, loudly. "James, are you even listening to me?!" She pushed his shoulder when mentioned boy blinked at her, stuck dumb.
"I do, I do," he groaned and stroked his temples. "Just," he gagged. ", give me a minute," he swallowed and closed his eyes, leaning on the wall behind him.
Just when he was about to doze off, he straightened by the impact straight into his head. Stocking the injury, he furrowed at the perpetrator of it.
"Seriously?!" He moaned, achingly. "How many times do I have to apologize?!"
"So long as I hear it honestly!" She crossed her arms. "Until that, you'll have to get used to this mood," she pointed at herself.
"That isn't your normal mood?"
Witnessing her gritting her teeth, he covered his head with his arms, while the girl stroked her eyelids, tilting her glasses by the motion. "James, you have one minute to apologize to me, properly!"
"Okay!" He sank in himself in fright. "I'm so sorry, Sarah! I didn't mean to get that drunk!"
"This is all you got to say?!" She hissed. "Seriously, after leaving me alone at the party, after breaking the promise of driving us back, this is what you say to me?! This is the least you could've told me now!"
"Baby, I'm sorry,"
"Don't call me that!"
"Did we hear that clear, Belch?" Barf's head emerged from begins the corner with his brother just over him,
"That's correct, Barf," The mentioned twin chuckled, mockingly. "Magnificent and fetching shouting, of our lovely Stormfly, on her silly boyfriend."
"You've got popcorn?"
"Of course, Barf."
Both of them sat on the same bench Hookfang was on, but they kept their distance, so they could observe the chaos, safely. Smirking widely, Belch took from his backpack the mentioned snack and while they began eating, he waved at the pair, encouraging them to continue whatever they were doing.
Furious, on the edge, Sarah glared at them, wrinkling her nose and James peeked from them to the girl, back at them, and so on. In the meantime, Belch turned to his brother, raising his chin.
"I always adored watching their arguments, brother."
"The same as me, brother," Barf pouted. "It's just so dignified!"
"The huge boy, who must be proud of his muscle weight and his height,"
"Being defeated by his girlfriend with rather an average body of the default teenager."
"In my defense, she isn't so average," James squealed, shrinking himself. "She knows how to fight pretty well."
"Our dear friend, sir James, might have point here, brother," Barf nodded at Hookfang, brooded.
"Indeed?" Belch hummed. "Well, our wonderful Stormfly isn't skinny so it might be some advantage from her side."
"Did they just call me fat?" Sarah muttered to James, snarling and he flinched in fright. "Am I interrupting something?!" She shouted to them, fisting her hands.
"Not at all, darling. You might continue," Barf smirked and frowned when the girls remained motionless. "Strange," he narrowed his eyes. "The program must have been broken."
"It must be a problem with the signal," Belch groaned glancing from Sarah to James, sequentially. "Such dissatisfaction."
Finally, Sarah snapped hearing it and with a swift movement, she moved to them, swinging her arm she punched Belch and kicked him out of his sitting spot second brother. After the act, both landed on the ground, whining in pain and Stormfly stank her chest out, peeking at her boyfriend who smiled awkwardly, also innocently.
"I love you?"
Snorting soundly, she rolled her eyes at him. "How could I let you alone at that party with," she pointed at the two, moaning figures on the ground and tsked. ", with those two around."
Barf gasped, relying his hands on his brother's head. "We didn't do anything!"
"Exactly," Belch pulled his arms away, sending his brother to the ground. "He has his own, free will!"
"You jerks, I don't care about it!" Stromfly threw her arms, annoyed. "Whatever you did, do you know how many problems I had because of it? I had to take care of his vomiting for the whole night!"
"Again, he could just say no," Barf sulked, offended. "We just did a little test."
"Sarah, honey, we were just wondering what would happen if the human drank a beer, wine, and vodka synchronically," Belch snickered when Sarah's eyes widened. "Don't look at me like that! You should be proud of your amazing, fantastic boyfriend, who sacrificed himself for a good cause."
"James, tell me they are joking," Sarah facepalmed when he didn't reply. "Idiot. Just idiot," she growled at him. "Don't you have any brain in that head of yours?!" She drilled her finger into his skull. "Any self-control?!"
"They gave me money," Hookfang pulled out of his pocket green papers. "It seemed worth it," he sighed while passing the money to her demanding hand. "Now, it wasn't worth it," he grumbled.
"And remember that," Stormfly massaged her scalp while glancing at the floor. "There wasn't anybody responsible around you? Anyone?!"
"Fortunately for us," Barf pointed at himself and his brother, both sitting at their places on the bench, smirking. ", there was nobody, so I was the smartest one at the moment there."
"It's not our fault mister responsible and boring Night decided to not attend the party," Belch leaned on the wall, placing his palms against the back of his neck. "A huge loss from his side."
"Hookfang, are you seriously implying that nobody from your friends can use a brain?!" Stormfly hissed when James shrugged. "I can't fukcing believe that nobody, from you four can," she halted suddenly. "Hold on," she turned her body to Hookfang, confused. "Tobias wasn't there?"
"Obviously," James snorted. "Why otherwise would I lift both you and Meatlug at the party?"
"I thought you were being nice," she shrugged and groaned, seeing the twins burst into laughter.
"James and nice in one sentence!" Belch hugged his stomach, tilting his body over the ground. "Good one, Sarah!"
Streaming her hand against her face, Sarah inhaled. "You know James, I start to understand Tobias," she peeked at the twins, disgusted. "His coldness towards them, his unwillingness to spend his time with them. It's like losing brain cells each time they open their mouths," she sighed and straightened at the reminder of the main theme. "You said you would talk with him about the party."
"And I did!" James avoided her sight when she raised his brow at him. "It's not my fault he was more interested in work."
"Hookfang, damn it!" Stormfly tensed her shoulder. "You should've talked more, convince him! That poor boy is going to overwork himself someday!"
"Tobias and poor in one sentence," Belch sniggered. "Paradoxal today, aren't we, Miss Sarah?"
"Honey, he has been working since he understood what that word means," Barf scoffed. "He's saving his money nonstop, even despite the fact he inherited not a little fortune from his parents."
"I didn't mean it in that way," she rolled her eyes. "Look Hookfang, you're the closest him friend, somehow. Talk with him."
"I might give it a try, but we both know it's not that easy to outtalk him!" James sighed, throwing his head backward. "He's just impossible and," he grumbled.
"I understand, but he's your friend," Stormfly moved to James and leaned over him. ", but at least give it a try," she kissed his cheek and exhaled, sharply. "I must go. Meatlug must be waiting for me. See you later," she waved her hand and walked into a farther part of the corridor.
"Bye!" Hookfang smirked. "I love you!"
"Okay, okay," she didn't stop, nor turned toward James but answered him. "Me too, or something."
"Today's date is still available, isn't it?!" Hookfang shouted, so everybody around heard him. "You won't refuse, we both know that!"
"You are lucky that I didn't strangle you!"
While she was leaving, Hookfang smiled dreamily, staring in her direction and Bard leaned over his shoulder. "She didn't say yes," he gagged at the sight of beaming James.
"Either way, she didn't say no," Hookfang stood up, nice and tall. "I'm still worthy."
Belch appeared next to his other side and patted James's back. "At least for now," he laughed and his brother joined him, while Hookfang groaned at them.
"Where is the captain?"
Hearing the inquiry, Hookfang raised his head, both surprised by the question, but also the fact he didn't notice his friend's absence earlier. He looked around the team's locker room, ignoring the ache after putting too little since skaters, frowning, witnessing everyone's stare at him.
"Don't look at me," he shrugged. "I'm not his mother. I have no idea what he's up to."
"Well, but you know him the best from all of us," Sleuther tilted his head on him. ", he wouldn't tell a soul," James once again focused on tieing his shoes. "Truth is that this man is just one, big, unexplainable riddle."
"Riddle?" Belch straightened suddenly, curious. "But like, the Riddler?"
"No, no," Barf shook his head, patting his brother's back. "With his sense of humor?"
"Right," Belch hummed. "He might be Batman then."
"Not necessarily," Barf sniggered. "Batman has a girlfriend, at last."
"Are they closing their mouths ever?" The tall, skinny boy with ginger hair and amber eyes that sat next to James, grumbled. "Seriously guys, where is that asshole? He's always first in the locker room."
"Don't be so harsh on him, Torch," the short, red-haired, and grey-eyed boy, hummed. "Maybe, he's just being late."
"Sharpshot is right," Sleuther narrowed his eyes. "I saw Tobias today in class, although he looked exhausted and," he exhaled. ", lifeless."
"Isn't that his casual self?" Torch snickered.
"No, it's not," Simon sulked. "He was in the worst shape I ever saw him."
"Was he?" Hookfang cocked his brow and while Sleuther nodded he sighed. "What do you think happened to him?"
"Finally, he overworked himself to death," Torch raised his chin. "We all knew it would take place someday."
"Maybe, but I think he's just sick," Sleuther snorted. "Yesterday there was such a storm I wouldn't be surprised if he was."
"Yesterday there was the party also," Sharpshot squealed when everybody glanced at him. "Is this possible that he's just hungover?"
At first, everybody remained silent, staring at him, stuck dumb. Then, someone snorted loudly, just so everybody would burst out into a loud laugh. After a long-lasting chuckle, Torch wiped his eyes from the tears, giggling.
"That was a good one!"
"Guys, I might have an idea!" Belch exclaimed, gaining everybody's attention. "Maybe, he changed into a zombie!" He snickered when each of his teammates looked at him annoyed. "It's more possible than his hangover, am I right, or am I right?"
"Okay, we get it," Sleuther stroked his brows. "So nobody knows anything?" He peeked at James, raising his brow. "Not even you?"
"I don't have anything to hide," Hookfang shrugged. "I know nothing."
"Cloudjumper'll be furious at him for missing training," Torch narrowed his eyes at James. "Are you sure you know nothing?"
"Hey! I'm not that bad! I wouldn't use lack of his presence!" Hookfang growled and sighed when everybody gazed at him. "Okay! I maybe would, but this time his absence doesn't have anything to do with me! Whatever he's doing right now, we all know he's stubborn asshole enough, that no training, nor any convincing won't persuade him from doing anything different from what he does, so why should I waste time trying?"
Looking around, he glimpsed everybody nodding and going back to their earlier doings. Afterward, he did the same, focusing on his shoes, but in the meantime, cocking his brows. However, why would he miss the training he loves? Hookfang glanced in the direction of Tobias's locker and squirmed his eyes, confused.
Yawning loudly, Tobias was walking next to the street, while his eyes were blinking, tiredly. His body was shaking, both because of the cold, March breeze and also because of the stress encircling his body. Nonetheless, he was smiling weakly, showing his excitation while his heart slowly filled with happiness.
Finally, his eyes caught a view of his target, which happened to be a hospital, and he inhaled soundly before stepping inside. Indoors, he glimpsed the same corridors he saw yesterday, the same plastic benches, the same rooms, and even the same people, like the paramedics who waved to him momentarily before disappearing.
Waving back at him, he detected by the reception with rather a long queue and thereupon he got in it. While waiting, he began biting his fingernails and he furrowed by a strange reflex. Why was he so nervous? He placed his hand over the heart, shocked by its velocity. He never was nervous, so why now?
Eventually, he understood his jittery self when he was asked by the receptionist and jumped at the sudden act. With a shaky hand, he passed her the card Atali gave him yesterday, and seeing it the woman smiled kindly and instructed him the way toward the door, he was guarding by today's night.
After thanking the miss, he rushed to referred destination, but halfway toward it, he slowed down, unsure. Is it for sure that he could come here? His eyes widened unnerve at the view of the door. Legally speaking, he was just a stranger who was lucky enough to gain the trust of Hiccup's doctor. Just as he got toward the wooden objective, he stood before it, frozen. Fighting his thoughts for a long moment, he flinched after hearing a familiar voice behind his back.
"Good afternoon, Tobias," Amaya smiled at him, dressing up herself in her lab coat, suggesting she was about to begin her job.
"Good afternoon," Toothless's corner of mouth lifted while he peeked at her, and momentarily after, his weak smile disappeared just as he gazed at the door.
Witnessing so, she smirked at him. "First visit is tough, am I not right?" She snorted when he nodded. "Even parents are having problems with them."
"Why is that?"
"It's hard to see the child in distress, even a stranger one," she hissed, glancing at him. "The most troublesome is the feeling of uselessness, but the truth is, people often forget it's not about doing something, but being present. It's about giving the kid the feeling of love, and that's far more important than some medication and treatment," she exhaled calmly, meeting his eyes. ", and you are about to provide Henry the same feeling."
"I'm glad," Tobias tensed his shoulders. "Although, is that the truth? Am I someone who can give him the love he needs? After all, I'm not his brother or any other relative, but the stranger who found him on the streets."
"Is that making you anything less? Honestly, because of it, I think it's quite the opposite," her cheekbones lifted and he glanced at her, questioning. "After saving his life, I'm sure that little boy has a lot of gratefulness toward you. Besides, what I heard from the paramedic is the opposite of what you're trying to imply to me," she elbowed his arm. "That boy accepted you as someone important in his life."
"Maybe," he scratched his neck and smiled at her, weakly. "Thank you, ma'am."
"Atali. No formalities."
"Alright Atali, I appreciate your support."
"I'm glad to hear," she passed him, and while she grasped the door's handle, she peeked at him, smirking. "Shall we?" She went inside, leaving him alone in the corridor.
Stepping after her, he flinched just in front of the door's frame. Everything's going to be fine, he reminded himself, calming his racing heart. He'll see Hiccup, someone he cares about. Shaking his head, he moved forward, closing behind himself a door. He is not a stranger, but an important for Henry person and he'll prove that.
Inside the room, he blinked after being blinded by its brightness of it. Finally, getting used to the new light, he observed his surroundings, curious. There were multiple devices and a few beds, but even so, there were no nurses, no patients, no doctors, just him and nearby Amaya.
It wasn't long after he noticed a little, familiar, hospital bassinet, which he had a chance of seeing already. At first, he flinched and hesitated, but ultimately, he moved forward to it. His mouth curved into a bright smile reflexively as he caught a glimpse of the time body inside it.
Wrapped into a little bundle, Hiccup was sleeping while his body was covered completely, leaving only his face visible. Immediately, Toothless frowned and fretted, noticing that everything he owned, like the blanket and the beanie on his head, was too big for him. It was just hospital equipment, after all, he ignored the circumstances, sighing.
Eventually, he leaned over the bed, delighted by the fact Hiccup could sleep without any risk, or scare, but also upset about his health state. Hiccup looked exhausted and emaciated, Tobias's heart ached, detecting Henry's uncontrol breathing, but also his, curled from cold, form.
"Hate to see it, aren't you?" Atali appeared behind Toothless's back, furrowing concerned at Hiccup. "Poor boy."
"True," Toothless exhaled, griping the bassinet's frame.
"Nobody deserves such treating."
"Neither he did," he peeked at her, narrowing his eyes. "How is he doing?"
"Better, but not the best. After all, he's treated not only from hypothermia but also starvation."
Hearing that, his eyes widened. "Did you just say starvation?"
"Unfortunately," she nodded, gazing at Tobias and back at Hiccup. "He had an eating disorder. His stomach is used to being fed with almost nothing, so it must be slowly weaned, otherwise, Herny might end up with stomach aches," she looked to the side, flustered. "At the moment, he eats half of what he should, but also because of his fatigue his body rejects half of that half, causing vomiting."
"So, he barely eats anything?" Toothless gasped under his breath. "That is horrible. Shouldn't he, because of it, stay longer in the hospital than a week?"
"I know what you're trying to say, Tobias, but it's not my decision how long he'll stay here and there is nothing I can do. When time goes, according to the law I have to send him to the orphanage," she patted his back. "I'm sorry."
Opening his mouth, Tobias gazed at her, but he closed it momentarily after when no sound got out from him. Just when Amaya turned to him, in a way to reassure him, both snapped their eyes at the bassinet, in which Hiccup began crying.
Without asking Atali for permission, he squatted before the bassinet, moving his face closer toward Hiccup. "Hey, Hiccup. Hey, buddy," he winced, detecting Henry's squirming, also tears under his eyes. "It's okay," he shushed, rocking the bassinet, lightly. "I'm here, buddy. I'm here," he beamed when Hiccup noticed his presence and calmed down.
"Impressing," Amaya snorted behind his back. "You have a talent for it."
"Talent?" Toothless shook his head pulling his hand to Hiccup to stroke the little boy's stomach. "I wouldn't name it like that. Besides Hiccup I never had any contact with any child," he chuckled when Henry grasped his pointing finger at the tip.
"What else could I name it?" Atali bent over both of them, smiling at Hiccup who gaped somewhere upward, into the light of the room. "It's just amazing how you can deal with him, in a matter of seconds. Poor nurses had problems with him for the whole night."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, Hiccup isn't a peaceful sleeper, unfortunately. For the whole night, he was waking up suddenly, crying," she sighed, rubbing her forehead. "Based on his age, he should sleep much, much more than he's now."
"What could cause these woke-ups?"
"A lot of things. Maybe pain, fright, lack of comfort,"
"Isn't there a way for you to help him with that?"
"I doubt I can,"
"It might be only hunger."
"He ate about an hour ago. Besides, remember I can't give him more. That might cause only harm than solvent."
"Then, maybe he needs to be changed?" Tobias peeked at her, concerned. "C'mon Atali, there must be something!"
"Tobias, let me finish," Amaya smiled at him reassuringly while he stared at Hiccup, stroking with his thumb his tiny fingers that gripped his hand. "There is nothing I can do although there is something you can do," she narrowed her eyes teasingly when his widened. "Could you rock him into sleep?"
"Well, of course," he gazed from her to Hiccup. "If that helps. I don't mind,"
"Great! Then, get yourself into work!" She clapped her hands and rubbed them against each other.
Instantly after, she stood up and moved toward the door, surprising the teenager. Before disappearing behind them, she showed her thumbs, waved her hand and must then she left, closing the door after herself. Strange, strange woman, Toothless raised a brow at the direction she went, and smirking, he glanced at his charge, still holding his finger.
"Back again, alone. Aren't you bored with me already?" He pulled his hand away, gaining from Hiccup his disapproval and whimpering while he drew his arms upright, searching for his. "Easy, buddy," he crushed, preparing himself to take Hiccup into his arms. "I'm still here with you," he brought him up to his chest, holding him securely against it.
After the act, Hiccup blinked at him calmly, without showing any signs of tiredness. Tilting his head at him, Toothless, who knew he hid his exhausted state, rocked him, and pressed him closer to himself, embracing him.
"It's time to sleep, buddy," he whispered into his ear, leaning his forehead against Hiccup's hair. "Sleep tight," he resisted his cheek on little head and was relieved detecting with the side of his eye how Henry closed his eyes.
Eventually, feeling that Hiccup loosened his body, Tobias heaved a sigh. Just as he raised his head, he grinned brightly at the glimpse of Hiccup's dozed-off and delicate form. Who would have thoughts that such a small thing could bring him such happiness? Toothless giggled silently and tightened his grip lightly on the tiny bundle while he leaned over him.
"Don't worry, Hiccup," he mumbled, rather to himself than same Henry. "I'll help you somehow with everything, no matter what. I promise."
