Well it's official...
Also an awkward dinner
A somewhat familiar face
And of course something has to fuck things up
Not beta'd we going in blind
Arthur and Mordy find out interesting news
Merlin tries to keep the peace...too bad he feels something cooking up
First thing the next day, Merlin alerted all the Dragons - Aithusa including - to scour the globe both inland and beneath the waves for any information on the Conjunction if possible. And if they couldn't…than any sign of Sigan's whereabouts will suffice.
He hopes for some good news for a change…
As soon as he and Morgana arose from their slumber and made themselves presentable they quickly made their way to Morgana's physician's office to get her sonogram done.
Now here he was with Morgana tightly gripping his arm waiting for the elderly nurse to begin. She'll never admit she's nervous but than again shouldn't he be as well?
"Alright Lena are you ready?" The nurse had the monitor and transducer setup and ready to go.
"…So this is…perfectly safe right?" Morgana couldn't help but feel concerned, this all felt too real now despite the fact that she's been pregnant for a while already.
"Of course darling I'm just going to send some pulses through with this here transmitter which will bounce off the transducer which will than bounce off the receiver and—"
"—Alright I believe you shit…" Morgana's head couldn't keep up with all these…terms. Don't tell Merlin...
"…Maybe we should have kept it a surprise?"
"Hush Billy."
"You two are truly delightful."
"Not a problem Nurse." Merlin snorted at the sight of his wife's shit eating grin.
The Nurse simply sighed and began the process. The mages awaited with bated breath for what felt like hours.
"Well there's definitely some movement going on there, take a look at the monitor loves."
And there they were.
They're children. Their twins.
"They're beautiful." Morgana has never felt so connected to something all her life.
"…" Merlin just stared at the screen in shock at the sight of the two tiny creatures inhabiting his wife's womb.
"Billy? You alright?" Morgana felt it odd that he was quiet.
"…We did that. We actually made them…"
She managed to keep herself from feeling too emotional, but his words made it hard. They did make those…those children came from them.
And she will kill anyone who takes them away from her…!
"Yeah…our beloved Gally and El."
"Oh you already chose their names, well that's good it's always nice to prepare these things ahead of time." The nurse had the screenshots printing out before turning off the equipment and allowing Morgana to sit up.
"Thank you so much for this, we really needed this. More than you could ever realize." Morgana truly felt such gratitude towards this random mortal, the babies' births can't come soon enough.
"She's right, you've sparked a light in us that can never be repaid. Please accept our gratitude." Merlin graciously bowed his head
"Oh come now none of that. No thanks are necessary dearies, just enjoy yourselves and do the best that you can for your little ones." The nurse smiled kindly, the mages bid their farewells as they exited the office with the picture kept secure in Morgana's handbag.
"Honestly Merlin, not even Arthur could ruin my mood now."
Merlin laughed, he can drink to that. "It isn't even noon yet, just wait until tonight when we're at the restaurant. You'll change your tune the second he opens his mouth."
"Not even your dose of reality can ruin my mood."
"Glad to hear." He pecked her cheek and they nearly made it to the entrance before Merlin heard his 'name' being called.
"Ah Billy! It's nice to see you."
Merlin turned at the voice with Morgana looking on curiously.
Dr. Crook.
Ugh…
"Dr. Crook…I had hoped it was your day off or something."
Morgana slapped his elbow, to which he rolled his eyes.
"No rest for the weary my dear patient. But since you're here I'm curious if your condition has improved? I do hope the stronger medication I've prescribed you is working well with no side effects?"
"Is this really an appropriate conversation to have outside an appointment?"
"Oh? You want to wait weeks just to answer my question? Well than please by all means."
Morgana wanted to snort but honestly she didn't know how Merlin would answer. He made it clear to her that his time on the pills would not be permanent.
"They're…adequate." So adequate that Emrys hasn't said a single word in months. Whether that's by the pills or by choice, remains to be seen.
"Ah well that's good, seeing as how I've only prescribed you a certain amount…here you are." Dr. Crook handed Merlin a refill prescription.
"You seriously just had this waiting?"
"Well it was easy once I saw you and the lovely Ms. Appleby with my colleague. Congratulations by the way."
Merlin really hated this guy.
"That's Mrs. Appleby, good doctor." Morgana could see now why Merlin thought the guy was a clown.
"Haha of course, well than Merlin I do hope your progress continues to go smoothly. Please don't hesitate to call if you've any complications." Dr. Crook gave a rather sad attempt at an elegant bow before heading off into the staff rectory.
Merlin seriously contemplated shoving the damn paper down the man's gut, would have were it not for Morgana dragging him away.
"I hate him."
"Not now Merlin, let's just get back to the car. My mood's been ruined."
"See? You agree with me."
"Okay so he's annoying. And?"
"So let's see how annoying he is as a caterpillar…"
"Merlin, you're not turning your damn doctor into a bug."
"…"
"Keys. I'm driving."
Merlin scoffed and tossed her the keys before entering in the passenger's seat. Morgana drove them to the pharmacy where he got his refill, he still had some left in his old bottle…but at least he didn't have to make another trip down here.
The ride home was at the very least quiet.
Several hours later
"So what restaurant did you even pick?" Merlin tried to fix the wrinkles in his green dress shirt. He still didn't see why he had to dress nicely. It was just Arthur and Mordred for fuck's sake.
"Oh some Mexican place I found in London." Morgana was getting her makeup in order already dressed in a nice very nice red flowery maxi dress and red high-heel shoes.
"We're really going to London? Why? There's Mexican food closer to home."
"Because Merlin you promised me more of those delicious burritos."
"You're joking…that's where they came from?"
"I mean I assumed you knew that already?"
Merlin looked a bit sheepish "No…I just conjured them up from anywhere…didn't exactly stop to ask for a specific location."
"Well now you know, goody for us."
"Hooray…" This definitely won't be the only time they go there...hopefully this will change after the pregnancy...
"Off we go then come on." The second she left Merlin looked back toward the mirror and hoped he could see Emrys. He hadn't taken the pills that day yet, but he gave Morgana his word…and she has until the end of the year. Merlin still doesn't know if he can lost that long.
He just wishes he can know for sure if Emrys would settle down once the children are born. If he could just give him that, than perhaps that's enough…? Great, Morgana's inquiry from yesterday is causing him to doubt himself
He bitterly swallowed the vile thing before tossing out the now emptied old bottle. Replacing its spot on his night table with the new one he received today.
"Merlin!" He could hear Morgana shouting from outside.
"I'm coming!"
Time to see if they can last a night out without Arthur and Morgana tearing each other's throats…
Yeah he doesn't believe it either but it's nice to dream no?
Meanwhile
"So she's nearly found it?"
Mordred nodded, Aithusa has spent what felt like ages looking for the Crystal Cave. Time really has done a number on what was once sacred land, hopefully it won't be long now.
Arthur sighed and made sure his attire was adequate for this evening. To say that he made an honest effort to rekindle his friendship with Merlin would be an understatement. It was mostly just phone calls however. They still didn't feel too comfortable meeting out in public especially on their own. But tonight will finally change all that, hopefully things will start to point upwards.
Of course, that also means he must tolerate Morgana's presence once more…he'll never get used to their relationship. Still, he made a pledge to himself to at least be civil and give it a honest effort. If there truly is a chance for he and his sister to salvage their…beyond tattered…relationship than it's worth it…he hopes…
"Arthur!"
Arthur blinked in alert "Huh?"
"I said I'm ready, what about you?"
"Oh yes, yes I'm ready. Onward to Londinium than."
"I keep telling you it's London now…"
"And I keep saying I don't care."
Mordred just groaned and made his way out the apartment building.
Arthur truth be told was wondering how tonight would even go down. It's one thing to plan ahead but once you're in the moment outside factors begin to meddle…
Just be positive. At least that's what his coworkers always say to each other.
London – Evening
The four met outside the chosen restaurant and to say that Arthur was shocked...well
Both he and Mordred stood there with gaping mouths and wide eyes at what appeared to be a pregnant Morgana…
"Y-you-your what?" Mordred was speechless.
"Words Mordred, you actually use them to speak." Morgana was flat in her shutdown before securing their reserved table.
Merlin snorted as he walked passed the two gobsmacked roommates. "Careful, you'll attract flies."
Arthur quickly shut his mouth and rolled his eyes "No more than you'll attract-!"
"-Sir please you're holding up the queue."
Arthur looked at the gentleman the behind him to the annoyed looks of many people. His cheeks flushed and hurried along to the table where he saw Mordred was already seated…little brat.
"So…" Mordred started off.
"So…?" Merlin look somewhat amused by his hesitancy.
"Umm…you guys are-"
"You're bloody pregnant?" Arthur felt like just ripping the bandaid right off.
Morgana quirked a brow as a server left some water and glass cups on their table.
"Hmm, did you already order drinks?" Merlin inquired.
Morgana shook her head "Apparently the owner of this establishment is actually from Mexico. I guess North American restaurants are very generous with their drinks shall we say."
"Huh, I mean I do love free refills."
"Who doesn't?"
A throat was cleared and both mages turned to an irritated Arthur who had his arms crossed.
"Are you a man or a boy? Speak up." Morgana squeezed some lime into her water while Arthur sputtered in brief embarrassment before glaring.
"You heard me damn well the first time!"
Mordred tried to hide beneath the seats…goodness must he shout?
"Well Arthur when a man and woman love each other very much—"
Arthur cut her off "What?"
"-they fuck and boom the woman's pregnant. Shocking, isn't it?"
Merlin rolled his eyes, of course these two couldn't help themselves but fight over practically anything.
"Tck…I know THAT. I'm not an imbecile."
"Could have fooled me."
"Now see here-!"
"Arthur, I have a bloody bump in my gut. Obviously I'm fucking pregnant."
"I-I…" Arthur just stopped and processed this. His sister is actually…growing little people in her…
"I-I…" Morgana mocked his poor attempts at speech before exiting the conversation and looking at the menu.
Merlin sighed "Look Arthur she's been pregnant for a couple of months. Once the signs became obvious, we got a physician to confirm it for us."
"…I still can't get my mind around that you two…it was horrifying when we heard you doing it the first time…" Arthur's face turned green with nausea.
"Oh please, that was hardly the first time for us." Merlin waved him off and laid his head back against the cushioned seat closing his eyes. Those damn pills always seemed to tire him out for hours after taking one.
"I can tell…"
"In any event we're having twins, so congratulations you're going to be an Uncle for two." Morgana stated as she than began to look for something she figured Merlin would eat.
"Twins? Congratulations, you must be quite pleased." Mordred felt genuinely happy for these two, of course it still felt weird to see his once vicious partner in prophecy as some kind of mellowed out modern woman. That together with Merlin, the myth turned man turned myth again.
"Uncle huh…" Arthur didn't even realize what Morgana having children would truly signify…his family was actually going to expand.
Plus well, the fact that Merlin was now apart of it he supposes it could be worse.
Finally the server came to their table, the sight of her however made Mordred freeze.
"Kara?!"
The other 3 stared at him than the waitress who stared at Mordred like he was some creep.
"Uhh no." She pointed to her nametag 'Alexandra McDermott'.
Mordred didn't know how to explain it but he knew for sure this was Kara! From the looks on Merlin and Arthur's faces…so did he.
"Oh great another reincarnation, will wonders ever cease?" He felt Morgana pinch his side which made him yelp and glare at her.
"Shut up…!" She whisper-yelled, oh right…Arthur and Mordred don't know that they encountered the reincarnated Knights…
Arthur however was too distracted by this reincarnated Kara, this was definitely not something he was expecting to happen tonight…
Poor Alexandra was really trying not to step away and kept her smile which definitely now looked forced. "So…what can I get you?"
Morgana who clearly was the only one here with any brains here gave her and Merlin's orders while kicking Arthur and Mordred beneath the table to get them to order already.
"Okay…and are you sure about your order by any chance? You're not just taking the piss?" Alex looked at Morgana with a weird gaze.
"I don't say shit I don't mean sweetie, yes. Obviously, most of them will be to go so kindly leave them in bags for me? Thanks."
Merlin groaned "I can't believe you seriously did this."
"You did promise me a dozen."
"I didn't think you were legitimately wanting them…"
Arthur just looked a bit put out "Chocolate chili burritos?"
Alexandra just sweat dropped and shook off her confusion. "Okay than." As she left Morgana shouted "Oh and whiskey!"
"Would you settle down. You can't drink alcohol remember." Merlin lowered her arm before she drew more attention to themselves.
Morgana scoffed "I can't wait until they're born…I miss wine."
"Than stuff your face with those burritos and forget about it."
"Someone's a bit cranky."
"I'm tired…"
"…I can see that." She grasped his hand, he must have taken his meds before they arrived…fine she'll cut him some slack.
Mordred just kept starring at the direction of the kitchen where Kara went into. He doesn't know what to do, she looked around the same age if not a bit older…does he talk to her? How would he do that without looking like a complete weirdo?
Arthur too was thinking of Kara…how she was even here for one. Looking at her in a modern serving uniform and pink hair highlights was a far cry from the girl who tried to kill him and caused a rift between himself and his youngest knight.
Merlin leaned on Morgana deciding to rest his eyes some more, the latter rolling her eyes before moving further back in her seat to allow Merlin to rest on her lap.
"Sheesh Merlin, what have you done all day that you're dead to the world?" Arthur couldn't remember if Merlin was always this snoozy in Camelot.
"Fuck off that's why." Merlin gently spoke. He sure as hell isn't going to tell those two about his…situation shall we say.
" Mer lin!"
Morgana snorted before taking a photo of Merlin who briefly opened his eyes to glare at her as she posted it to her Instagram with heart emoji's.
"Can you not?"
"Weren't you tired? Go to sleep already." Morgana playfully covered his eyes to which he shook off and tried to return to his slumber.
"Wait Merlin…you mentioned 'another reincarnation' earlier…?" Mordred tentatively asked.
Arthur perked up, "What?"
Morgana mentally cursed her idiot husband out "Way to go Merlin!"
Merlin huffed "I'm…how do you say it… checked out …you tell them."
"Oh that's real mature of you" Morgana considered dropping her water all over his stupid face…but if she can't get a damn tequila she better keep the water safe.
"I don't care who answers! Someone just do it!"
"Well bro …I think I'll remain silent if that's how you're going to be." Morgana smirked at her brother's annoyed gaze as Kara's reincarnate returned with starters of delicious mushroom cheese quesadillas with chipotle mayo dip on the side.
She smacked Mordred's hand away as she hogged everything. "Preggers remember? I'm feeding for 3 here."
Mordred chuckled while Arthur rolled his eyes "Gee why do I feel like you're going to take full advantage of that fact?"
"Jealous that you can't?" She broke a piece of the quesadilla down to Merlin's mouth. He briefly opened an eye and swallowed the piece down before going back to his power nap.
"You're welcome dear."
"Mmmm."
"I should have told that Kara girl to get you a super espresso or something…"
"Mmmm…"
"Yes,. Can't have you sleeping now or you'll be up all night."
"Mmmm…!"
"Watch the tone mister, less you sleep on the floor."
"Mmmm."
"Tck…yes you fool, love you too." Morgana if anything just further secured Merlin in her lap, bringing his head closer to her stomach…to their children.
Arthur felt his teeth were going to rot…god how can they be so…eww. "If Guinevere were here and looked passed Morgana's crimes, no doubt she'd call this sweet and adorable….ugh."
Mordred looked on in melancholy, before he would have smiled at the sight but now seeing Kara again…he yearned for a connection like this. He wished she could remember him…
"Morgana."
The High Priestess' smile vanished as she looked back up to Arthur across the table.
"Stop dodging the question." He said firmly.
Morgana just stuffed more quesadillas in her mouth as her eyes gleamed mischievously, giving Arthur the bird.
"Did you just…?!" Arthur was aghast!
"I'm sorry, did you need another?" Two birds now. Arthur was sorely tempted to throw his drink at her smug face!
"Both of you please stop." The Pendragon siblings turned to the former Druid who looked at them with a bit of exhaustion at their constant back and forth. Then he looked at Morgana in a hopeful look.
"It's a fair question to ask Morgana. Are there more people from our old lives here? Please tell us."
Morgana bit her lip and tried to weigh the pros and cons, she and Merlin did say they can do what they want…so long as it doesn't get back to them…
She hopes she doesn't regret this.
"Your Knights." There she said it, no turning back now.
Arthur spat out his drink and was choking. Mordred began to smack his back in an effort to help his airways. Once Arthur regained his bearings he stared at his sister in shock.
"You saw them? Here?! All of them?!"
Morgana hummed while raking her fingers on Merlin's hair who was gently snoring, yeah she definitely needs to get him some caffeine.
"Did we see them? Yes. Here as in here ? No. All of them? Also no."
Arthur waited for her to elaborate, when she didn't he felt like ripping his hair out but before he could shout Kara's reincarnate returned with their main course.
Goodness he almost pitied the poor girl for her sisters crazy order…
"Sweetheart do me a favor and get me a triple no quadruple espresso for this one yes?" She pointed at a snoozing Merlin who may as well be floating in a cloud at this point.
"Uhh, sure is he okay?" Alexandra wondered.
"Oh he's fine just working too hard is all, well that and he'll take any excuse to sleep on me haha."
Arthur really didn't want to puke on his food, but damn it if Morgana wasn't making it hard.
"Ha sounds like a handful." Alex could admit she thought the sight of them looked somewhat cute.
"You've no idea, but hey such is love no?" Morgana shrugged.
"I guess, I wouldn't know of course." Alex shrugged her own while writing down the espresso order for Merlin.
Mordred perked up, this was his chance! She's single! He should say something!
Well he should…did he? No. He's never really done this before.
It was easier in the old days because they grew up together as friends but now? She doesn't know him. She doesn't know their history. It would be…difficult to keep himself from forgetting that Alexandra wasn't Kara necessarily.
Besides, was it fair for him to hope she remembers?
"Anyways I'll get that caffeine ready for you in a jiffy. Anything else you lot need?"
"I think we're good thanks." Morgana watched as the girl left their table before salivating at her burrito…finally!
"Morgana!"
"Ugh what?!" She just wants to lose herself in spicy chocolatey goodness damnit!
"What did you mean in your answer?!"
Morgana resisted the urge to remove his tongue. "Look Arthur, your Knights didn't just get reborn in the same fucking place. They're scattered all over the world. And no, we never found Leon. The end. Now shut up and eat your enchiladas!"
"Wait what?! So you found everyone except Leon?! But what does that mean?"
"How the fuck should I know Arthur?! I don't care if they got reincarnated or not as long as I never have to see their repugnant faces again! Just seeing yours already tests my will…"
"At least tell me where they are."
"Arthur, we found them when Merlin and I were on holiday. Half of those places aren't even where they live or where they're from. I wouldn't know where they are now nor do I care."
"But..!"
"If all you want is for them to help you two fools in Destiny then you can find them yourselves."
That shut Arthur up, fine they did make an agreement. He takes comfort at least that his knights are out there somewhere. If the Fates will it, they'll reunite.
"Something doesn't add up to me…"
The siblings turned to Mordred who was eyeing his tostadas as if it were under a microscope.
"You said you saw all the knights except Leon? It sounds weird. I mean even Kara is here and she wasn't a knight. So what does that say about Leon?"
Morgana had to give it to him, it did sound odd.
Arthur thought about it "Didn't Merlin tell us that Leon disappeared and never returned to Camelot?"
Mordred narrowed his eyes "Even so, that would have been fifteen centuries ago. Either Leon is reincarnated or he isn't. Perhaps some people may simply not get lucky? Or maybe the others of the Round Table simply had regrets in their previous lives and thus were reborn now?"
The two men heard Morgana scoff "Let's just call a spade a spade, it's simply the Sisters' meddling. Whether Leon is a factor in their plans or not? Well since we haven't seen his reincarnation by now I'd wager he doesn't factor in at all. Oh well."
"Tck…" Arthur glared at her nonchalant attitude but what was he expecting from her honestly.
Finally Kara's reincarnate returned with a moka pot and a 2 shot cup of espresso.
"There you are, if you need anything else just call me." Alex smiled as she left them to it but than heard Mordred's voice.
"Oh un Alex…!"
"Huh? Yes?" She turned toward him expecting another order.
"I—umm…"
"Yes?"
"…Nice teeth…"
Morgana cringed "Nice one Romeo…"
Alex sweatdropped a bit before showing an open smile, bright teeth and all "Well thanks…I guess?" She than left to attend to the other guests.
Mordred banged his head on the table, cursing himself for the blunder.
Arthur patted him on the back "Don't beat yourself up too much, she wasn't put off by you at least."
Morgana snorted "Because you're such an expert on women?"
Arthur glared at her "Of course I am!"
"Oh please! The only woman you courted was the same woman you married." She shook her head.
"Guinevere was indeed. However I've had plenty of dalliances before she entered the picture!"
Morgana scoffed "Sure, a real casanova you are." Arthur's cheeks blushed.
Mordred suddenly had a thought "Huh you know Morgana I am curious now that this topic has been brought up."
"Hmm? Well go on, out with it."
"Was Merlin you're one and only? You've both lived for ages so surely you yourself had your fair share of comings and goings in terms of relationships?"
Arthur must admit that Mordred's question was one he too was curious about as he stared his sister down.
Morgana didn't know how this became a conversation…but whatever.
"I mean did I mingle and have some fun with people before Merlin and I declared our vows? Sort of? The centuries following Camlann weren't really focused on relationships of any kind unless it was Aithusa and at the time I kept my distance from Merlin. Towards the formation of England I began to dabble here and there, figuring what the hell? However it never went further than a kiss and in some cases not even reaching that. Everyone was just so…" Morgana trailed off as she tried to find the correct term.
"Bland?" Mordred provided.
"Yes yes that one. It could be said that they simply were not compatible with me but well…" My heart has always been Merlin's despite my efforts to the contrary. "So yeah I had minor flings, nothing ever serious nor anything that went beyond the occasional smooch."
And it's probably the only thing she'll ever be old fashioned about. It certainly helped, since she and Merlin both owned the others virginity. No regrets there.
Arthur quirked a brow before nodding while Mordred asked "What about Merlin?"
Morgana hummed "Aside from me suspecting Freya which technically I have no proof of? No one."
"Really? How do you know?" Arthur asked.
"Well, Aithusa always kept me up to date on Merlin's life in those days. Especially as he went through his more…suicidal…phase. But it's not hard to see. Merlin is a different animal entirely."
"Meaning?" Arthur inquired with a wave of his hand.
"Meaning that he isn't bound by his desires. And quite honestly if it weren't for his rather obvious affections towards me, I'd have assumed Merlin had no interest for romantic relationships at all for anyone."
"Huh, interesting it's like Merlin processes emotions differently?" Mordred was curious to know more.
"In a way. When Merlin loves he loves deeply." The opposite is also true. "But anyway enough of that, this food is getting cold." Morgana held up the espresso….and dumped it on Merlin.
The warlock sat up ready to fight for his … huh? He than remembered where he's at…ugh.
"I hate you." He wiped his face and discreetly magicked his clothes clean.
"Love you too." She pecked his cheek. "I got you a salmon filet with lemon and coriander. Figured you'd only be able to tolerate something basic."
Merlin hummed as he stared at his food, "Thanks."
Arthur and Mordred were just dumbfounded.
"Uhh…why did you do that?" Mordred asked the witch who was happily feasting on her chocolate chili burrito.
"Hmm? Well you didn't honestly expect caffeine to work on Merlin did you?" She quirked a brow.
"Uhh…"
Merlin snorted "As if. I can't even get drunk but suddenly I can get an energy boost from coffee? That'll be the day."
"So you don't drink coffee…or anything remotely alcoholic?"
"Of course I do. I drink them because why not? Tastes bitter and fine, I can appreciate that. I just don't feel any of the usual effects from caffeine or alcohol."
Arthur turned to his former manservant in confusion "But you drank all the time? You were a regular at the tavern…?"
"Really? Have you been holding out on me Merlin?" Morgana gave a small laugh before reaching toward another burrito that was in one of the takeout bags Kara left for her.
Merlin looked at Arthur like he was a new species of stupid. "What in blazes are you on about?"
"Gaius said you were at the tavern all the time!"
Merlin facepalmed, ah yes now he remembers. "And you being you believed him…yes it was annoying."
Morgana laughed "I can imagine. I mean for real Arthur? Have you not seen Merlin drink before?"
"I have! He was a lightweight!"
Merlin sighed "Before I reached my peak sure. After that point? Not even bloody cannabis could get me to feel anything."
Mordred coughed, while Arthur was just confused. "What's cannabis?"
"You smoked weed?" Mordred looked at Merlin as if he had some on him right now.
"Yes."
"And what the hell is weed?" Arthur was irritated to be left in the dark.
"Arthur, I'm surprised you don't even know what cannabis is. Latin and Greek were spoken many times in Uther's court among the nobility. Where do you think the word cannabis originates from?" Merlin exasperatingly asked.
Arthur needed a moment to think "κάνναβις?"
To which Merlin responded "ναι."
"…I'm not even going to ask how you even know the Greek language…"
"I know every language that has ever existed Arthur. Magic tends to do that when you have plenty of it." Merlin decided to finally take a bite out of his salmon, looking somewhat in awe at Morgana's ability to wolf down her now third burrito.
"What?" Morgana felt his gaze as she swallowed.
"…Does that ALL really go to the kids? Or is this some new spell you invented?"
"Merlin, if you're going to call me fat at least have the bollocks to say it."
Arthur couldn't help it, he snickered to which drew the ire of his very angry sister.
"Oh I absolutely don't need to hear that from you!"
Arthur sputtered "Me?! I'm not the one eating a feast meant for a small village!"
Morgana's eyes turned gold but Merlin snuffed it out before she can fry Arthur to a crisp. "Calm down I'm sure his soft underbelly is punishment enough." He said, gently rubbing her arm.
"Why you…!"
The back and forth went on for nearly 20 minutes before Kara finally returned to the table.
"I see most of you are done, anything else you need? Dessert perhaps?" Alex looked amazed at how Morgana had finished six of her twelve burritos.
"Uhh sure, whatever they want." Merlin was grasping his head, for some reason he's been getting a headache.
Morgana didn't notice, she was too distracted at the thought of dessert as she ordered the marbled tres leches cake, Mordred ordered the flan while Arthur took a page form Merlin's book and declined anything.
Mordred sighed as he watched Kara's reincarnate walk away. Morgana looked mildly amused at the sight "Just ask her out, worst she can do is say no."
Mordred bit his lip "I mean…what if she actually says yes? What would I do then?"
Morgana hummed "Take what you can get."
Mordred looked away, getting lost in his thoughts.
Arthur noticed Merlin was holding his head and clenching his fist, he looked like he was sweating. "Merlin? What is the fish fighting back?" Arthur played off.
Morgana turned to her husband, finally noticing his discomfort. "Merlin?! Merlin what is it?! Are you alright?!" Did the medication fail? Was it something else?
Merlin gritted his teeth as he glared at a particular direction his golden eyes in bright view. He stood up and turned back to his wife with his sky-blue eyes returning. "Do you still want to come with me?"
The other men at the table were so confused as was Morgana initially until she widened her eyes in realization before narrowing them, nodding her head affirmatively she got up and followed her husband out the restaurant.
"Wait! What's going on?! Get back here!" Arthur stood and was about to chase after them but Mordred grabbed his arm.
"What we can't just leave we have to pay!"
"So than YOU pay your little girlfriend! I'm going to see what that just was!"
"Arthur!" But the former King had already gone after the mages, hoping to catch up to them before they got far.
"Well shit…" Mordred knew he should go after them…fuck. He stood and got his money out before making his way to where he saw Kara. She was by the kitchen just getting ready to leave with their dessert, and was shocked when she turned to see a serious looking Mordred.
"I'm sorry but something came up and we have to leave, I do hope this will cover everything for your excellent patience and service?" He handed her the money before walking out to meet the others, he can hear shouting outside so at least he knew Arthur managed to stop them in time.
"Wait! This is 1000 quid! I-I can't accept this!" Alex ran in front of him trying to put some of the money back in his hand but he refused.
"Look…Alex trust me when I say this money is pocket change to me. Please accept it as a gift if nothing more."
"…I don't even know your name, why would you gift me anything?" That look of skepticism made Mordred's heart yearn for a lost memory.
"Well…maybe we change that. I'd love to get to know you more? Perhaps we can…I don't know…get a coffee? A stroll in the park maybe? Sometime? You know...if you want?" "Shut up!" Mordred hid a wince as he feared perhaps he came off too strong.
Kara's reincarnate assessed him, he looked like a decent boy. Didn't really come off as anything but sincere…maybe she could give him a shot…?
"…Give me your phone."
A few minutes later she went back to her work while Mordred just starred at his phone in awe. He just got Kara's number…
Mordred would have stood near the entrance all night if the entering guests didn't keep bumping into him…and also the yelling were getting louder.
Right…time to leave.
Of course what does he see when he's outside? Morgana and Arthur in a shouting match while Merlin is nervously tapping his foot with his arms crossed staring at…a wall?
"Umm guys what's going on?"
Arthur paused and turned toward him "Apparently something bad is happening and they won't let me help!"
"We don't bloody need you Arthur! This problem is of magical nature so what use could you be?!" Morgana retorted it vehemently.
"Then give me back excalibur!"
"In your fucking dreams!"
"You can't say I'm useless on one hand than refuse to give me the one item in which I CAN be useful on another!"
"The fact that you're useless without it at all should tell you enough brother dearest!"
"Why you rotten sh-!"
"ENOUGH!"
Everyone looked to Merlin who was still looking at the wall of a building.
"I don't have time to listen to you two prattle on and on about who goes where and why! Morgana quit wasting time arguing and conserve your energy, we're about to head into unknown danger. And you Arthur, I would strongly recommend you don't come with us. You don't know what we're up against and quite frankly you were never good at dealing with magical foes anyway. Unlike her I can actually attest to that." Merlin huffed, his patience at an end.
Morgana and Arthur both glared at him, the former conceding reluctantly but Arthur wasn't having it.
"Look the whole point of us doing this was to be the friends we couldn't be in Camelot. You keep saying I never understood back then well I'm trying to now! Let me help you! In any way I can, let me see all that you have done for me! …Let me at least try to return the favor." Arthur's eyes remained glued to Merlin's when his gaze turned his way.
Merlin gave it some more thought. The worse that can happen here is Arthur dying, the best thing? Arthur realizing he's in over his head and not steering far away from Cynfab.
He sighed but relented "Fine, but if I say run or don't interfere you listen. Got it?"
Arthur couldn't help but once more compare this assertive Merlin to the one who followed his orders back in Camelot. Perhaps Merlin did have the qualities of a Knight after all?
"Fine."
"…Fine."
"What about me?" Everyone turned to Mordred.
"You weren't reincarnated with your magic? How can you help anymore than he can?" Merlin asked.
Mordred scoffed "Drop me off in my apartment before we go and I'll show you."
