"You must be rather curious, about why I gather you here."
"Not much, but thanks for noticing."
The morning sun shined through the window, while inside the apartment that belonged to Tobias, a group of teenagers gathered. Most of it sat on the couch, only James sat on an armchair, and the owner of the place stood in front of everyone, crossing his arms. Sinking into the couch Sarah furrowed at him.
"May you explain to us the case then, already?"
"I'm almost certain that from all of us, you know the issue too well," Tobias returned the favor, narrowing his eyes.
"Maybe, but the reason for that is sitting here," she pointed with her head at the figure next to her, positioned in an armchair. "My fault he has a potty mouth?"
"Excuse me?!" James exclaimed, straightening in his spot. "It's not my fault!"
"Come one, babe. You told me once, about one of your arguments, which took place at my surprise party, before it began, destroying the whole surprise part," she snickered, squirting her eyes at him. "Each day, I am confident you can't get any stupider, but here I am."
Leaning over her, he grinned, mockingly. "And you love me for that," he mumbled, receiving a groan from her.
"Okay, shut up," Toothless pointed at them and inhaled, soundly. "We're not here to listen to your, strangely still-lasting, relationship."
"Then, why are we?" Barf grunted, informing about his laying presence on the black couch.
"Exactly," Belch exclaimed from beneath the coffee table. "Also, why aren't you hiding any money under the couch? Everybody does!"
"Not me," Toothless buzzed and darted at his brother. "Anyway, Barf, that's a great question!" He glanced at Sarah, blinking at her, furiously. "Why are they here? I understand why Martha is here," he pointed at the girl next to her, who smiled nervously when all the eyes focused on her. ", however, their presence is rather, well, useless."
"Well, nobody knows how, but they are our friends," Sarah shrugged, cocking her brows. "They might be somehow useful."
"Friends?" Tobias scoffed. "Call a spade a spade, just parasites."
Raising his head from the fluffy carpet, Belch's eyes softened as he gazed at Tobias. "Night," he crooned, wiping an invisible tear off his cheek. "You deem us as a part of your life."
"You're part of it only because of the red-haired moron."
"That red-haired moron keeps them close, to witness how they annoy you," Hookfang sniggered, pouting. "Each time, the stunning picture," he smirked widely, while Toothless tensed his cross of arms.
"Besides," Stormfly pointed with her head at the twins. Trying to stand up Belch impacted his head into the le, while Barf roared with laughter. Immediately after, Belch punched his leg from underneath the wood, causing Barf's lack of balance, and hence, his downfall. ", comedy."
"I think, it's not the time for comedy," he exhaled, shaking his head. "Since we all gathered, there is something I wanted to-,"
"What the fuck?!" Belch gagged after taking a slip of the black cup from the table. "Black tea. Who drinks that shit?"
"As a matter of fact, me," Toothless tsked, moving forward to him and snatching the cup from his hold. "Next time, don't take something that doesn't belong to you," he straightened and glanced at the rest of the gathered. "I lost the context."
"What is the issue, exactly?" Martha raised her hand, grinding anxiously.
"Issue, right," Toothless inhaled, clasping his hands on the nose. "A few days ago, as you probably noticed, I was rather moody."
"Moody?" Belch looked around, furrowing. "Did I miss something?"
"Wasn't that your typical?" Barf snickered, laying next to his brother. "We didn't notice any change," he and Belch chuckled, mockingly.
"Very funny," Tobias stroked his eyelids and peeked up at the rest. "For those of you, who have a brain actually, all of that was caused by a situation I was involved in a few days ago."
"You mean, finding an abounded child on the streets?" Stormfly raised her chin, smiling.
"There isn't anything I can hide from you, is there?"
"There isn't, but again, red-haired fault."
"Wait, hold on," Meatlug's eyes widened at them, glancing from Tobias to Sarah, repeatedly. "Abounded child? Would you mind explaining that?"
Opening his mouth, he stopped momentarily, witnessing a dead silence caused by everyone's curious and twinkled, shocked. "Well," he straightened, loosening his muscles, which tensed, strangely. "I found an infant, in the dark alley, in rain, a storm more precisely."
"Oh no," Martha squealed and covered her mouth, saddened. "What did you do?"
Belch gasped, soundly. "He killed it!" He barked.
"Tobias, you must stop doing Anakin's references! Know your limits," Barf grasped the material over his chest, glancing at Toothless, disgusted.
"I didn't kill him! What dumb idea is it?!" Tobias shouted, inhaling to calm the popping-out vein on his forehead. "Truth is I just did everything I could, I called the ambulance, and looked after him, nothing beyond it," he glanced to the side. "Although, that event affected me, somehow. I never witnessed such a cruel thing as the desertion of the infant. His parents dumped him, left him on his own, and he became an orphan."
"That's why you want to adopt him," Sarah beamed at him, gaining everybody's stare.
"Exactly," Toothless nodded, weakly. "I attempted to search for his family at first, but since nobody seems to be willing to do it, I decided I would be the one to take up that choice," he looked around at each of the teenagers and scratched his neck. "I know you might think I shouldn't, but-,"
"Nobody is saying that," Stormfly gaped at him, straightening. "Do you care for that child?"
"His name is Hiccup. Henry, more precisely, but Hiccup, and yes, I do."
"Would you consider him as your family?"
"Obviously."
"Are you aware, you would have to change your daily behavior after the adoption?"
"I did, already. I slept for 8 hours today, and even ate breakfast."
"What?!" Barf's eyes widened, shocked. "Is it possible to learn that power?"
"Not from a Jedi," Belch elbowed him and both burst into laughter.
"Anyway," Stormfly grunted, glancing from the twins back at Toothless. "So, you are sure of that decision? Adoption is your final choice?"
"I think so," Tobias glanced at the floor, and tightening his eyes for a moment he raised his chin afterward. "Yes," he stank his chest out, nodding furiously. "Yes, that's my final decision!"
"Awesome," Hookfang smirked, making himself comfortable in his chair. "Whatever makes you happy," he supported the back of his neck with his palms. "Regardless, I'll make great uncle. Best uncle!"
Barf snorted, soundly. "You wish," he rolled his eyes at him.
"Why is nobody talking about the most important fact?!" Belch stood up, gaining everybody's annoyed attention. "He's Mandalorian."
"I am, what now?" Tobias frowned at him, stuck dumb.
"Mandalorian," Belch nudged him, shaking his head at him. "He adopted Grogu, baby Yoda," he narrowed his eyes at Tobias, facing him inches from each other. "Spitting image of Din Djarin."
"Even so, he was great Anakin anyway," Barf got up and leaned on his brother's shoulder, who nodded, agreeing.
"May we come back into reality, please?" Martha giggled and grunted, innocently. "Would it be rude if I asked how Hiccup looks?"
"Not at all," Tobias shrugged, smiling at her gently. "I have a photo of him in my bedroom," his eyes widened, when two skinny figures passed him, swiftly. "Don't even think about it!" He yelled, racing after them.
After the three of them disappeared behind the door, the rest traded amused glances, until Toothless came back with them, holding both of them by collars. Each of the twins was glancing at the floor, defeated.
"Almost," Barf hissed, embarrassed.
"It's impossible to outrun him, somehow," Belch groaned and tapped the holding him arm's muscle.
"And remember that," Toothless sniggered, pushing them back into the center of the living room.
Standing up, Martha moved toward the bedroom door, and without any trouble, Tobias let her pass. After she followed James and Sarah and the twins sulking, observed the event, offended. Eventually, everyone got back in their spots and Meatlug grinned at hers.
"I must say that Tobias, Hiccup is adorable."
"If you saw him in person you would be surprised he might be even more than that," he beamed while witnessing so teenagers blinked at him, stunned. "What?"
"Oh fuck," Belch's legs wobbled. "I must have some hallucinations. I just saw him smiling."
"No, it's not that. I saw it too," Barf gripped his brother's arm, to prevent himself from fainting.
Stromfly shook her head to wake her up from unbelieving. "Honestly, it would be great to meet him in person," she returned his smile.
Raising his chin, Hookfang sank into his chair, loosened. "Well, I had met him in person," He grinned, proudly.
"Right," she frowned at him, mumbling. "It would have been lovely, if my boyfriend took me with him back then, instead of lying."
"For last time Sarah, I didn't know he was with a child there!"
"Still, you could have said me about his presence in the hospital! I may have come as well!"
Their argument with each second was encased, and Tobias, like the rest of the group, observed them, rather obviously. Same shit as always, he furrowed at them and his eyes narrowed when twins got in front of his sight. Fuck, not them again.
"So, Toothless," Barf crooned, smirking. "You'll be a father."
"I don't know what are you up to, but I disagree already."
"Don't worry Tobias," Belch snorted, patting his elbow. "We won't do anything wrong! We would like to remind you if you need any help with Hiccup in the future, we are always willing to, with pleasure."
"There is no force, in this damned world, by which I would even let you hold him," Toothless stroked his forehead, ignoring their presence.
"Come one, Tobias," Martha grinned at him nervously when he peeked at her, questioning. "They aren't that bad. Give them a chance to show you otherwise."
"Exactly! We're going to be like Hiccup's favorite, funny uncles!" Barf straightened, raising his chin. "We'll give that kid the entertainment he deserves, because, let's be honest, with you as a father, he'll be bored in no time!"
"I'll regret asking," Toothless muttered from underneath his palm. "Entertainment?"
"You know, having fun!" Belch shrugged, grinning. "Like playing with him-,"
"With knives, of course," Barf whisper-shouted.
"Taking him for walks-,"
"Through most dangerous alleys."
"Giving him toys-,"
"The more dangerous, the more fun they bring."
"O-Okay," Martha stuttered, moving aside. "I changed my mind."
"Now, I doubt I'll even let you inside if I had to be honest," Tobias sighed and the twins burst into laughter.
Glancing around, Martha observed everybody's doings. For example, her best friend Sarah kept arguing with her boyfriend, over issues not even involving the last situation. In front of her, both twins mocked the larger, black-haired teenager, who responded by showing them his middle finger, gaping just over their heads.
Instead of attending any of these cases, Martha shrugged, keeping herself by the side, hoping to stay unnoticed. Their group was the weirdest she had ever seen, she acknowledged but rolled her eyes at her thinking. It didn't matter, because no matter how terrible and teasing they were, they loved each other because that's what are friends for.
A few hours passed after the meeting, through which the group had an opportunity of analyzing Tobias's situation. They got to the conclusion there was a chance for Toothless to adopt Hiccup, although he had to work for that.
Fortunately, his financial state was just enough, the difference in age between them was adequate, and the only things he must do were consult with a psychologist, who had the power of agreeing on him being a former parent, but also a civil servant, by whose permission Tobias would become Hiccup's father.
Or brother, Toothless's thoughts argued while he walked forward through the streets. Shaking his head, he focused on his gait and loosened. He'll think about that later. Gazing at his watch he hissed noticing the hour 05:56 p.m. He was late, he fastened his steps, passing swiftly any met by a person.
His delay occurred mostly because of his friends' begging about joining the training, but also because of his stress. He wasn't sure if Atali would even let him in, he swallowed before stepping inside the hospital, straightening with hope.
It was well known by him Hiccup must have been asleep at that hour, even so, he decided that showing up here would be a better idea than staying in a house, overthinking everything. Besides, sleeping or not, he missed him, he waved at the familiar him already receptionist, who signalized him to go, without any questions.
Before moving behind the corner, he dusted off his clothing and combed his hair between his fingers. The truth was he looked much better than earlier. A night of good sleep makes miracles, he chuckled to himself and inhaled walking ahead. What he looked like must have been enough.
Stopping before the known, wooden door, he was about to knock on them, but he flinched from them as they opened, revealing Amaya in them. Immediately, glimpsing the teenager, she halted in the doorframe beaming at him with exhausted eyes.
"Tobias!" She yawned, wiping her eye. "You have no idea how happy I am to see you."
"Pleasure is mine," he chortled anxiously, analyzing her slouched figure, messy hair, and visible bags under her eyes. "May I ask, if I-,"
"You can see Hiccup, of course," she rubbed her eyelids with her fingers, while Toothless let out a breath of relief. "I'm so, so sorry that I didn't let you do that earlier."
"Why? Honestly, it was a responsible choice for you. Anyhow, did something happen? No offense Atali, but you look terrible."
"It's my fault it happened," she leaned her head against the doorframe and closed her eyes, comfortably. After a moment, hearing a silent snore coming out of her mouth, he shook her lightly and she jumped, squirming her eyes. "W-What was I saying?"
"What's going on?"
"Hiccup."
"Hiccup?" He tilted his head, crossing his arms. "I don't understand. He's the most well-behaved child I ever had put up with," he straightened and snorted, quietly. "Let's ignore the fact he's the only one, actually," he muttered and glanced behind her into a room. "What happened to him?"
"Well, it started when I didn't allow you inside yesterday, for which I'm deeply sorry."
"It's okay, Atali. After all, I went after your offer, and are things right with me," he gazed down at himself, showing off his appearance, and then back at Amaya.
"I noticed, and I'm truly proud," Atali grinned tiredly and Toothless returned it, nervously. "Anyway, when you didn't come that day, Hiccup got, let's name it, naughty."
"Naughty?"
"He screamed for a good amount of hours, cried, squirmed around, without any possibility of calming him down," she sighed, supporting her back at the wooden edge. "The only time of peace was when he got exhausted and fell asleep, for barely more than an hour."
"What's with him, now?"
"Finally, I was able to get him to sleep-," her eyes widened surprised at the sound of a holler behind her back, and narrowed after a moment. "Right. Was, is the important word here," she covered her face with her hands, groaning.
"May I?" Toothless pointed with her at the room and moving aside, Amaya passed him inside.
Instantly, he hurried toward the hospital bassinet and hissed at the sight inside of it. Furiously, Hiccup was thrashing around, screeching loudly at top of his tiny lungs. Under his tensed eyes were little drops of tears, making their way toward his mouth.
Instead of feeling delighted with the meeting, he felt guilty. If it wasn't for his irresponsible behavior with himself, he wouldn't get any ban and be here with him, he frowned at himself, but then straightened when the yells began hurting his ears. Hoping that wouldn't scare him, Tobias leaned over him, shushing.
"Hey, buddy. It's me," he beamed as Hiccup's eyes squirmed to see him. "I'm here, buddy," he stroked his forehead with his knuckles, carefully. "I'm so sorry that I left you alone for a while. I didn't mean to," he winded momentarily but loosened when Hiccup's cries changed to silent sobbing. "I swear, I'll not ever again leave you like that," he gritted his teeth, seeing Hiccup's shivering body.
Glancing around and glimpsing no Atali nearby, he inhaled sharply and kissed Hiccup's forehead momentarily. Afterward, Henry gaped at him, slightly calmer, and when his swinging arm hit Toothless's nose, he giggled, wetly.
Even so, Tobias grinned, brightly. He wished, he could see that view every day. Moving barely away, it was all it took for Hiccup to startle. Within a moment his eyes swelled with tears and Toothless's brows cocked, alerted.
"Hey, hey. I'm still here," he encircled his hand around Hiccup's tiny fist, but notwithstanding that, Henry's attribute didn't change.
Panicked, Tobias did the only thing that came into his mind, picking up Hiccup in his arms. While Henry was laid against his chest, with his face pressed against Toothless's shoulder, the older boy positioned his cheek on top of his head and shushed.
"It's all alright, buddy," he whispered, making circles with his hand on the infant's back. "I'm here. I'm here, with you."
When the sobbing didn't stop and Tobias's mind was filled with worry, Atali stepped toward them, frowning fretted. "He's exhausted," she grimaced while the teenager peeked at her, concerned. "In the end, he didn't sleep for almost the whole night."
"Whole night?!" Toothless shouted and winced when Hiccup howled, frightened. "No, no," he shushed into his ear. "It's okay, I'm sorry, buddy. I'm sorry," he whispered, softly. "I didn't mean to scare you," he tightened his grip, and feeling the boy loosen, he glanced at Amaya, questioning.
"That's right," she sighed, gazing at Hiccup, snuggling into Toothless's clothing. "The nurses who got the night shift called me in the middle of it, informing me about my distressed charge. The truth is, I'm here for seventeen hours, now," she covered her mouth, yawning. "I didn't get much sleep, as you can see, but despite my assistance, we weren't able to calm him down," she furrowed at him, annoyed. "That's why it's magical for me, to see you achieve so, in less than five minutes."
"If I had to be honest, I have no idea how I'm doing that either," he chuckled.
"Liar," she shook her head obviously and then chuckled herself. Eventually, she looked aside, upset. "Anyhow, I'm worried about how he'll make it in an orphanage since as you can see, without your service, it'll be a hard time for him to get any sleep."
"It doesn't have to be like this," Tobias gaped at her, raising his chin, hesitantly. "Amaya, what if he didn't get into an orphanage, at all?"
"Toothless, I'm sorry, but there are no volunteers and-,"
"What if there is a voluntary?" He smiled weakly, wiggling in the spot. "I mean," he sighed and stroked the back of Hiccup's head. "I thought that maybe I-," he gazed at the floor, embarrassed.
"Are you thinking about adopting him yourself?"
Biting his lip hard, he nodded, slowly. "I know, I know. I'm not rather the best choice. I won't give him, ensure him with everything. He'll have to attend nursery until I graduate, but I hope that what I'm offering would be enough," he rested his forehead against Hiccup's side of his head.
"Well," she hummed for a rather long moment and then grunted, convinced. "Considering your rather young age, I can say that's a crazy idea, but either I'm not against it. Not at all. If that's the path you're willing to take, I'm going to support you in it."
"Thank you," he beamed weakly and gazed at Henry, troubled. "Do you think I can do this? That, I have what it takes, or something like that?"
"Of course, you are able," she came over to him and placed her hand against his shoulder. "The teenagers struggle with pregnancies, and survive, so why won't you with adoption?" She gave him a light squeeze and he chuckled, shaking his head. "Also, going back to what you said earlier, why would what you're offering not to be enough?"
"I don't know," he tsked, shrugging. "I'm still a teenager, and even so my salary isn't worst, I doubt I can provide him with things," he frowned, glimpsing Amaya narrow her eyes at him. "What?"
"Oh, Tobias. You're a terrible hypocrite," she rolled her eyes as he raised his brow at her, confused. "Look. Some time ago, someone said something so clever and important, that it lasted in my mind. The only thing they require is being loved, so the question is, will you require his with that? Will you be able to love him?"
"Oh, Amaya," he crooned and gazed at Hiccup, comfortably. The boy's eyes battled the thought of sleeping, and because of that Toothless tensed his grip on him, pressing him closer to himself. "I love him, already."
"Awesome," she squealed while her eyes teared up. "Well, since that, know that you have my back if you need any help with anything."
"Thank you, Atali."
"You're welcome," she yawned and was shocked by the last of the act. "May I leave you with him? I'm tired and I have to take a nap. Can I trust you with him?"
"Of course," he nodded and Amaya moved toward the door. "Sleep well," he exclaimed after her and she waved at him, before closing the door behind herself.
Glancing at his charge, asleep on his shoulder, his heart filled with happiness, unfamiliar to him. No matter that, he loved it, he rocked his body, beaming gently. "I love you, buddy," he whispered, almost soundlessly. ", and if everything goes right, I promise you the home you deserve. Our home."
