"I don't think that's a good idea."
"Was there anything said by me ever considered by you as a good idea?"
"Fair point."
It was about the start of may which was shown by flowers over trees, that were about to bloom. The sun was up in the sky, a little of clouds were showing themselves, and there was a need for warm hoodies outside, although may be supposed to be half through spring and halfway toward summer. Ladies and gentlemen, Berk. In an apartment that belonged to Tobias, and Henry apparently, the group of young adults gathered. The mentioned owner stood straight, with his arms crossed over his chest, and observed each of his guests.
James with whom he just talked, but stopped at the loss of attention caused by others, was standing just beside him. His arms were supported onto his hips, as Toothless noticed, to give himself a view of being bigger than he was.
Twins since the start of the meeting of the council, as they called it, were digging through his bar in the kitchen. Lost time, since it was emptied by them a time ago, and he didn't have the strength to fill it once again with alcohol. Well, at the time these are only vodka bottles filled with water. Those two morons were giggling over the water they just found.
Girls were having different opinions about spending that time productively. Honestly, the opposite. They were kneeling by the couch on which his place had Hiccup, who was happily swinging his arms. Sarah and Martha were talking to him lovely, making those touched by Henry's adorableness faces, concentrating their whole watch on a boy who in difference to them wasn't much concerned in their presence. He mostly was bitting into his, now favorite toy which was a black, dragon plushie.
It seemed Toothless had been staring now, because to regain his awareness Hookfang snapped his fingers in front of his face. "Earth to ex-Captain!" Tobias narrowed his eyes at him. "What's the conclusion?"
He sighed. "Undecided." James widened his eyes while putting his head farther. "What? I can't be skeptical once in the while?"
"It's just a rarity on your part," Martha answered without turning her head away from, now-babbling, Henry. "You always have opinions. You either disagree or-"
"Disagree?" Sarah finished for her and both giggled silently. He rolled his eyes at them. "Well, but that's true. It's infrequent."
"More like impossible." Belch chuckled. His brother, who was already half-body into the liquor cabinet didn't waste occasion and high-five him.
"Why is everyone against me?" Toothless's jaw tensed at the sight of everyone shrugging simultaneously. "First, you barge into my home-" Tobias pinched the bridge of his nose. "-and now this?"
"Standard." Hookfang slapped his hand into Toothless's back, hard enough so it echo through his whole body. "That what are friends for."
"Back to theme." Stormfly turned to them the head. "When was the last time you left the house?"
"Well, I and Hiccup are constantly going out for walks-"
"I meant-" She twisted her body in their direction. "-going out, like on something you would like to do."
"Well then...I guess it was, three months?"
"Since you have adopted Hiccup?" She sneered. "Seriously?"
"For his defense-!" Barf yelled, just so to be heard from between the wood that encircled him. "-he never was that kind of guy, who goes out, well...anywhere!" He pulled his arm backward and his brother low high-fived him.
"Funny," Toothless muttered, then straightened. "Anyway, I am just thinking, isn't Hiccup too young for those spontaneously hanging out?"
"He's not that young." Martha joined the others and smiled at Tobias. "After all, he's almost five months old! He's going to be alright."
Just then, behind the girls' backs, Hiccup rolled from his back onto his stomach, while making a lot of child giggles. Both instantly spun around but anyway sighed sadly because they'd missed it. "He's constantly doing that." Tobias chuckled. "I can't keep up with him anymore."
"Why then he can't do that in front of us?!" Toothless shrugged in answer. Sarah growled, then tried to veer him around herself, but the boy grasped onto the material of the couch, preventing her from doing so. She gave up. "Stubborn baby! Like a father like a son."
Tobias smiled widely. "Yeah, he is." For a moment he remained like that, and to quell himself he was forced to bite his lip hard.
James gasped. "How sweet!" Toothless frowned. Hookfang: the best quell force for Tobias since 1985. "Anyway, proposition." He encircled his arm around Tobias's neck. "A training. Friendly match."
"I'm not sure." Toothless scratched his neck.
"Come on! The season is over!" Hookfang exhaled. "Maybe not in good style, we lost finals." Then, he flinched. "Not that anybody blames you!"
"We only blame our new captain." Belch snickered. Barf got out from under the cabinet, in the meantime hitting his head on the wood and when he was out two burst into laughter, yelling synchronized. "Hookfang, Hookfang, oi, oi, oi!"
James frowned and let go of Toothless. He, seeing a new sadness that grasped onto his friend, placed his palm over his shoulder. "Don't listen to those idiots. They have no idea how hard it is to be captain." He smiled comfortingly. "It's the easiest to blame the Captain. They did that repeatedly to me."
"That's right Boo." Stormfly once again joined the conversation, but this time she stood up to them. "You got second place, after losing one of the best players, let alone the attacker."
Toothless patted his back. "Listen to her, she is smart."
Hookfang smiled. "Thanks, guys."
Belch groaned. "They got family-friendly." He pointed at the bar. "Back, back, back!" Then, both twins disappeared in their search once more.
The whole three laughed at their reaction. Hookfang straightened. "So, back to theme-" Tobias let go of him and hugged his arms. He was about to say something, but James overtook him. "It's training offseason! Fast, conflict-free, calm." He snickered. "Besides, Cloudjumper asked about you. Don't make me once again talk with him about that stuff."
Tobias rolled his eyes. It was nice knowing James considers the whole adoption as stuff. He inhaled. "I'm glad he did, and I believe that it's going to be peaceful. I'm worried about Hiccup." He walked forward toward the mentioned boy, then took him gently in his arms. Henry was placed against the side of his chest and shoulder. The little boy tried himself keep his head straight while looking over everyone around him, but his dad decided to help him out, just in case. Even so, seeing his tries, proud Tobias kissed his forehead. "Won't he be cold?"
Sarah grunted. "It's May."
"It's Berk."
"Fair point."
"If it helps you Toothless-" Martha stood up just after Tobias and Hiccup did. "-I and Stormfly are sitting just in hoodies out there and it's quite a warm prospect."
Stormfly waved her hand. "Take him a blanket and he's going to be okay!"
"Okay..." Hiccup placed his jaw against Tobias's shirt, chewing it. Toothless didn't notice it, and only resisted the side of his head on Hiccup's head. "What about noise?"
"There is not much noise at training." Hookfang crossed his arms. "You will wear him a beanie and he's going to be alright." He blinked questioningly at him. "So...?"
Everybody's sight was concentrated on Tobias now. Everywhere he looked there was pair of eyes, which stare at him. Even twins got out of their hiding, just to gaze upon him. All of this tension was gathering inside him until he looked over at Hiccup. The tiny boy was gaping just at him. Those two big, dark, green eyes... Tobias sighed. "I'm going to regret this..."
He could try to convince himself, over and over, that he hasn't longed for it, but no matter how much he would try doing so, he couldn't. He breathed in cold air, mixed with the scent of sweat and metal. The captivating smell of one of his favorite places. Ice rink.
He glanced downward at Hiccup, sleeping now comfortably in his baby carrier, covered with a cotton blanket. No sight of distress, no sight of chills, or shivering. Promising picture.
The group, which he had an opportunity of seeing just half an hour ago, left much earlier than him. That gave him a chance to put to sleep a tiny boy, who was now soundly resting, not even aware of the location he found himself in. It was nice, once in a while for him, to not be worried and let himself take a loose.
Only a moment passed and Tobias was able to notice two girls sitting by the bench. A blond one of them stood up and waved toward him, giving him know to come to them. He knew handing them Hiccup under their protection was the only choice for him to let himself have agreeable training. In other conditions, he would be already anxious and stressed, but right now Henry was deep into his slumber, so, what wrong could happen?
Not knowingly why, but his mind was telling him: everything.
He waved her back, giving her know he noticed her and was about to follow her instructions, but before that happened his eyes caught view of a ginger-haired, skinny, but tall man. Trainer. Cloudjumper. He pointed at him with his head, letting her know he would like to talk with him first. As an answer, she rolled her eyes at him and sat on her seat, harshly. He snorted and shook his head, just then he followed his earlier thoughts.
Before he got to the mentioned man, Tobias had a possibility of observing him more. He talked with two kids, both about twelve years old, probably giving them one of his irreplaceable thought. Since the time he last saw him, he hasn't changed much. He got a little gray hair on the scalp, but besides it, he stayed the same. He stayed that ginger-haired man, with a beard in the same color, but being kept in an elegant state, with that amazing, ambitious spark in his eye he always has been jealous of.
Eventually, as he was getting closer Cloudjumper caught a glimpse of him. He instantly fell silent on innocent children and chased them away with a wave of his hand. These, who just now Tobias noticed as the only ones occupying a rink, rode away laughing, almost tripping over. He chuckled, but not for long because Cloudjumper decided to meet him in half of his way. "Who do we have here?" The older man stank an eye on him. "Did you miss us already?"
"Are you still mad about that final, Cedric?" Toothless smiled mockingly, but in his eyes was a shadow of a doubt. "I thought you prepared yourself for that while making Hookfang a Captain."
"Maybe I did, but it wasn't me who left a team, a family just before the last trial of the season." Cedric walked closer to him and frowned. Tobias lowered his eyes in shame. "And it wasn't me, who thought some family matters, are more important than a hockey match!" At that moment, the teenager was confused. He looked over the man before him like he was nuts. The whole time Cedric stayed dead serious, but eventually, he couldn't hold it and broke into laughter. "I'm joking!" He hugged Toothless with one of his arms, patting him on the back.
"Don't scare me like that, Cloudjumper!" Tobias backed hug and breathed out in relief. "I was scared for a moment I will be forced to drag you into some family therapy or something!"
Cedric chortled, then he moved away, but his arm still swang over Tobias's back, just so they kept eye contact. "But seriously now, fella. Family is most important and as I heard your family just has grown." He raised a brow at him. "Did I hear good?" Toothless nodded, while his smile grew. He raised his arm with a baby carrier, lightly not to wake up Hiccup in it. Cedric's eyes widened. "You've taken him?"
"As you see." The man was about to kneel, just to see a boy, but Toothless made it easier for him and placed a carrier onto one of the viewers' seats. Even so, Cloudjumper still decided to kneel, probably to analyze the infant from a close distance. A while after his staring started, Cedric turned toward Tobias with a question. As if reading in his mind, the teenager answered. "Henry Hiccup Night."
The man nodded, then once more glanced at the mentioned boy. "No wonder why you are so fond of him. He's adorable!" Toothless crossed his arms in pride seeing Cloudjumper being melted at the sight of his son. Then, he straightened. "And tiny. Genuinely tiny."
"It doesn't matter." Tobias grinned. "Honestly, I would prefer if he stayed like this forever."
"First parenting thoughts?" Cloudjumper snickered. "Well, he won't be a hockey player for sure."
"He doesn't have to be a hockey player." Toothless kneeled next to Cedric and both peeked at Hiccup. "He might be a figure skater. He might not even like skating at all." He pulled his hand to Henry and gently with his knuckles he shocked his cheek. "He will be whoever he would like to be. I'm going to love him no matter what." He bent forward and subtly kissed the place he just touched.
Back at his place, Tobias remained to stare at Hiccup. His little boy. Tiny bundle and charge. His buddy and son. He bit his lip to stop the flow of tears that were about to gather in his eyes. He looked at Cedric to refer his thought to something else. He was baffled, witnessing that the man was staring at him. He cleared his throat. Cloudjumper straightened and grunted. "Can I say you something?"
"Well, I can't stop you from that."
The man inhaled loudly. "I'm fucking damn proud of you, son." Tobias's eyes widened. Cedric nodded, just to dispel any doubts. "It's just...all of this..." He gasped. "I never was so amazed in my entire life! You, a teenager, that is about to become a young man, adopted an infant just so he didn't end up in an orphanage!" He shook his head, unbelievingly. "I never witnessed such sacrifice and commitment, Tobias!" He snorted. "When I first heard about it from James, I was worried that after a week you would regret what you did, but look at yourself!" He pointed at him with both arms. "You look so happy and complete, as I have never seen you!" Toothless avoided his look now, and he smiled seeing his watery eyes. "He's lucky to have you. You are lucky to have him! You both are lucky to have each other, and that's just beautiful!"
First, Tobias beamed at him, then he frowned and shoved him lightly. "Don't make me cry! How I will now show myself in the locker room to others!" He wiped his tears while laughing.
Cedric waved his hand at him. "Since when do you care what those animals think?" Both laughed. He looked around and as if something caught his attention he stood up. "Speaking of the locker room, I think it's time for you." Toothless gazed where he did and detected Sarah going in their direction. Cloudjumper patted his back. "Go change. We will see each other on the rink in a moment." Still kneeling, the teenager nodded. The trainer reciprocated and walked away, leaving him alone.
His loneliness didn't last long, because Sarah appeared just over him. "Are you going?" She tilted her head at him. Toothless answered with a nod and got up. He took off a bag, which started to stab him in the shoulder. He pointed at it and opened his mouth, but she overtook him. "Everything is in the bag. If something's not in the main partition, look into the side ones. If there's a problem, yell at you at the rink no matter what." Tobias blinked at her, amazed. She smirked and narrowed her eyes at him, mockingly. Then, she grabbed a bag from him and pushed him in the direction of the locker room. "Go! And look out for those animals."
He rolled his eyes, but with a smile, and he followed her orders. "Don't overreact." He yelled from distance. "They aren't such animals."
They were such animals.
He just pushed a handle. He didn't even come inside. He just stood at the doorframe of the locker room when the animal alike noises came to his ears. Everybody inside's eyes were on him. There were screams of joy and madness. The cheers were mixed up with booing. He blinked a few times at them before he frowned and closed the door, disappearing behind them. Tobias turned on his heel and tightened his shoulders, which caused him to lose height.
He walked forward swiftly. "Nope, nope, nope." He muttered to himself.
His prays occurred to be useless, because after a moment his arm was grabbed, and pulled inside the room forcefully. He found himself in the center of the noise, and while peeking at the door, the escape door, those were almost body guarded by Hookfang who smirked fondly. Fondly. Right. Tobias shot him an annoyed look.
The same chaos continued, but this time Toothless found the strength into hearing it out. At first, there was a lot of complaining and moaning about stuff, which he mostly ignored while dressing himself up. He started catching what they were saying when the tone of their voices changed from rambling to coherent.
The boys were mostly saying how disappointed, how discounted, and betrayed they are. Tobias hummed at them in a response to that, but what caused him to get back into reality, as well as to gain actual attention to what was around, were words of sympathy, and compression.
They were saying things like, he should tell them, they would help or we're with you, what you have done was incredible. He found himself smiling at them, for their assertions, surprisingly. The twins, of course, fainted at the view, but other than that thanks to them, he felt understood and supported.
Some units didn't share the same energy as others, naturally. Cough, Torch, cough. Eventually, even he joined the rest and everyone just enjoyed a come-back of the ex-captain. Unnatural view, by at least a lot pleasurable.
He would have lied if he said he didn't miss it. The feeling of cold air against his cheeks, while gaining speed, at the same time feeling warmness because of his frequent movements. He had a disk. He pushed it forward with his stick while avoiding an enemy's defense. Swift crossover on the right side, then on the left, a violent hockey stop, aim, swing, and sharp.
He smirked proudly at the view of the black disk being inside the white strings of the goal, but in the while, he peeked at Cloudjumper at the sound of the short whistle. Last action. The disk got to the feet of two captains of each team. In his example, Hookfang.
Mentioned boy was now fighting over the domination. In the meantime, Tobias got onto the position. Just as James succeed, he wasn't surprised that the disk was passed to him. He rushed forward and while dodging his opponent he was forced to temporarily backward ride.
Noticing the bad placement of his he was troubled, only momentarily, as after a mere moment he noticed Sleuther, alone, unprotected. He couldn't help but chuckle underneath his nose. Toothless rapidly turned around, but in meantime, he served disk to Simon who strikes a captivating goal.
And that's an example of beautiful gameplay.
Eventually, there were casual pats on his back, which were always those saying nonverbal good job. Just as well, he sent a few toward his teammates. After noticing Hookfang, he raced toward him and stopped just in front of him. Tobias took off his helmet to show his red cheeks. "I lost condition after those few months." He brushed his hair away from his face. "I'm tired after such mellow training. How about you?"
As a response, James straightened. He took off his helmet and Toothless broke into a mocking giggle. The curls of his hair were glued by sweat to his face. His whole face was in color, which was comparable to fresh strawberry. In that state, he was lacking his vitiligo, fucking medical condition.
"Great I see."
"Shut up."
Tobias shook his head, then his eyes wandered over Hookfang's shoulder. Viewers' seats. He passed James, but while doing so he patted his back. "You're going to be okay." There was a hard fuck you answer, but he didn't react to it much, only showed his middle finger during still riding forward.
A normal human, once they got towards the rink's barrier would stop and probably get to the exit of it. Not Tobias. He gained speed and jumped over it. Doing so, he almost tripped when his metal blade met a rubber surface. Balancing himself, he caught a glimpse of gazing at him Sarah, as well as awake Hiccup, who was bringing up his head toward the rink.
Toothless frowned. "Why didn't you call me?"
She rolled her eyes. "You said to call you in emergencies, that's for first." She crossed her arms. "Second, he was quiet and he mostly stared at the rink." Her jaw tensed. "Third of all-!"
"Okay, you're right. I'm sorry!" He grinned awkwardly. "Thank you for help, I know you didn't have to, so it was nice of you."
Sarah blinked at him a few times, before raising her head. "Of course it was." Afterward, she disappeared behind her phone, but even so Toothless could witness her well-hidden shock.
He rolled his eye, but just then he full-focus on Henry. Tobias kneeled in front of him and when the little boy finally noticed his presence he waved his arms. His eyes widened as well as his mouth, from which the pacifier fell off. There was an O sound, which he made, noisily. By now, a known reaction for him. The reaction of happiness. Or excitement? Who knows, for sure it was a good signal.
Toothless grinned. "How are you doing, buddy?" Hiccup screamed, loudly screamed. Tobias narrowed his eyes, but the smile didn't fade from his face. "It's good to see you're enjoying it." Hiccup smiled toothlessly, an adorably amusing impression.
Hearing another noise being made at the rink, Hiccup tried to look over his dad at it. Tobias followed his sight, then with a wide smirk, his gaze went back onto the boy. Hiccup started wrangling around and tapping his feet. He wanted to get out.
That reaction could be taken as a spoiled child's, but not in Hiccup's case. The little boy was a well-behaved kid. He was rarely against something. Truth was that Tobias's small joy seemed to love what he had, even as for the child's logic. He was satisfied with everything around him. He didn't need anything.
That's why the sight of him like that wasn't normal. Hiccup was just...eager and enthusiastic. Besides, is it that bad to give your child what they want from time to time?
Not for Tobias, because he shook his head, simultaneously taking off his jacket. What father would he be, taking his son in his arms, wearing cold clothing? He stopped halfway. What about taking him, wearing a sweaty hoodie? After the moment he shrugged. Lesser evil, it was washing day anyway.
Eventually, everything was in its place. Hiccup was tightly covered in a blanket, and at the same moment, he was comfortably against his dad, in his natural, already common way. Tobias let himself resist his cheek against his head. "How do you like it, buddy?" O sounds were coming from Hiccup. Toothless giggled. "Big, isn't it? Maybe someday you will ride here?" Saying it, he momentarily lost himself in thoughts. "It seems like a good future." He muttered.
"What are you buzzing there?" Torch, amazing and completely unnecessary, skate to them and now observed them from another side of the barrier by which they stood. His eyes widened at the view of a bundle in Toothless's arms. "Is that a little Night?! Show him! I didn't get almost choked for nothing!" Toothless rolled his eyes at him.
As time passed, next to Torch appeared Teddy. Afterward, there came another boy, and another, and so on until the whole team gathered in front of them. There were a lot of questions, which were given in mishmash, making them cornered. Hiccup became anxious and he pressed his head against his daddy's neck. Seeing so, Toothless tightened his grip on the boy and sent the rest warning, frowning glimpse.
Teddy got emotional. "Protective daddy!" He gasped.
Torch not so much. "Alright! We got a shy kid and his overprotective father!" He snickered. "Just wait until he starts talking. It's going to be so fucked-" Synchronically, Tobias, James, Barf, and Belch started yelling. It was this kind of shout that wasn't supposed to say anything but was more likely jamming. Torch raised his brow at them. "What?"
"We can't curse in front of the baby!" James peeked at Toothless and raised his eyebrows. Toady asshole. "We want to keep him as well-behaved as Tobias made him."
"It's a sakret rule!" Belch inhaled loudly, enough for everybody to notice his seriousness. "Breaking it means unimaginable punishment."
"Tobias wanted to throw him out of the window when he said damn next to Hiccup's ear." Barf rolled his eyes, but then he took notice of Toothless who stared at him. "What? I said it to give the context of the story! Alright, alright, where is the closest window? At least let me do it myself."
"And what else?" Torch snorted. "We won't be able to talk to him, otherwise, you start beating people up?"
"You're first in line for such talk." Tobias stank his eye at him. "Besides, since when I beat up people for anything! I only ask you to behave next to my kid, is it too hard for grown-up boys?"
"Exactly!" Hookfang raised his jaw. "You better start being mature already!"
Sarah, who kept her sight on the phone, burst into laughter. "He's talking. The most childish of them all."
James frowned. "For your information-" He smirked. "I have immunity as Henry's godfather. I'm practically untouchable."
Tobias sneered. "You are serious now Hookfang?"
"He's not joking." Sleuther narrowed his eyes while shaking his head. "He started using it as an argument in the fight now."
"James!"
The mentioned boy shrugged. "You're angry, but I won at least four times already because of it."
Toothless facepalmed. "And I chose you as godfather." He muttered. "What came into my mind?"
"If that helps-" Tobias took his hand off his face, just to notice Simon, who was gazing at him. "-we were well informed because of him." Seeing that he succeeded at easing Toothless, he glanced downward at Hiccup. His nose wrinkled funnily. "He's so precious!" Others seemed to agree as they started nodding.
Hiccup, who still held himself tightly against the chest of his daddy, gazed at them momentarily. He made a toothless grin, before hiding his face completely in Tobias's shirt. At the sight, Toothless couldn't help himself but smile widely. Hiding his nose in Hiccup's hair he started kissing him on the head a couple of times. Without changing his position he started chuckling when there were the sounds of admiration mixed with sounds of pretended vomiting.
The only thing that caused him to change his standing, was Cloudjumper's arm that encircled his back. Tobias straightened at that. "Okay, enough of all of that. Keep some dignity, would you?" Afterward, as he glimpsed at Toothless he detected Hiccup. He leaned towards him and with one finger he tickled Hiccup's stomach, who giggled at that. Both Tobias and Cedric smiled at that. The rest of the group was wide-eyed and wide-mouthed.
Torch cleared his throat loudly, which gained their attention. "He not only enchants Toothless but also Cloudjumper. What I'm trying to say-" He inhaled loudly. "-he's a cursed baby."
"So much of keeping dignity," Cedric mumbled, then straightened. "Anyway, we're closing the rink at the moment." He clapped his hands once. "Shall we get going ladies?" Hearing their disapproval he frowned. "It might sound like a question, but it was an order!" He started clapping furiously. "Go! Go! Go! I don't want to see you there!" As he yelled everybody already was running, or rather riding, in random directions until all of them disappeared.
Tobias snickered. "I would love to have that power of yours."
"Believe me, you already have it." They laughed, then Cedric sighed. "Regardless, you should get going as well, but before I wanted to tell you that I'm happy you were here."
"And believe that me as well."
"I know, I know. In difference to them, you have enough brain to behave well enough to say so." He patted his back. "Listen, I hope we will see again at the next training. Okay?"
Toothless bit his lip. "Well, that depends..."
"On what?"
"Many factors. Mostly Hiccup."
"I see." Cedric hummed. "Why don't you take him every time then? It's not a problem, more than that, I can stay with him if that helps. I don't mind." He elbowed him while smirking. "If that means a come-back one of my best players, I can even take twins." He snorted. "Not those twins. I couldn't stand it."
"Nobody could." Tobias chuckled. "Thank you." He exhaled. "In that case, I guess see you at the next training."
Cloudjumper tightened his grip on him. "And let it stay like that." When he let go of him, he pushed him lightly enough that Toothless didn't even flinch, then left.
Afterward, Tobias glanced over the rink. He breathed in the cold, chilly air, before peeking at Hiccup. The boy was just like him moments ago, staring at the rink. Grinning at him he stroked his head with his thumb. "So, you liked it here, buddy?" Hearing his voice, Hiccup darted upward. At that movement, Tobias immediately held his head. Even so, the boy made once more an O sound. Toothless smiled and kissed his forehead. "Now, are we going home?"
