Chapter 2

Reaching King's Cross Station on the 1st of September, the young man smiled lightly as he and his mother and father walked across the station, his trunk and his owl in his cage on top of the trolley that he pushed onwards. The boy's father a man named John Winder was a tall man with broad shoulders, he had short black hair and bright blue eyes, fair skinned, he was a Muggle who worked as an executive chef in a Muggle restaurant while the man's wife, Ellen Winder, a Witch with dark brown hair, dark eyes and also fair skin with a slender build, gently squeezed her son's shoulder.

"Well, we're here...you ready, Jeff?" She asked.

"Yeah, let's go." Jess replied.

Jeff was an expectant first year, a half-blood who stood somewhat tall for his age with short black hair and dark eyes, fair skinned and thin, he wore simple jeans and a T-shirt, he had to blend in with the non-magical people, he would change into his school robes on the train. Jefferson Winder, called Jeff by his loved ones, was not only a half-blood, but also half-American too, due to his father who was originally from Maryland. His mother meanwhile had lived in London all her life, working in the Ministry of Magic.

Moving together the family made their way towards the barrier between Platforms 9 and 10, they looked around carefully and noting that no one else was looking their way and took their chance, they walked through the barrier and onto platform 9 and ¾ where the brilliant red Hogwarts Express steamed and waited for the various students, returning students, first years like Jeff, all their families all stood on the platform saying their farewells before the eleven o'clock departure of the train.

'This is it, made it…' Tim thought in delight. 'It's really happening, I'm really going to Hogwarts.'

The excitement built within him but he kept himself outwardly calm as he could as he walked along the station with his parents, noting with a grin the look of awe and wonder on his father's face, something which amused his mother too. Finally they stopped and both parents hugged their son.

"You take care now, kiddo." His father said. "You have anything you need, just send us a letter."

His mother smiled. "You'll do fine sweetheart, trust me, it'll be fun."

Jeff nodded, he would be lying if he said he wasn't nervous, but his mother's words helped him keep calm. With everything set he began heading down the train, looking for a carriage to board with his luggage. As he did so he came upon two girls, they looked like first years like him, they were struggling to get their own luggage inside the carriage.

Jeff took note of the two girls, a short fair skinned girl, lean with chin length black hair and green eyes, wearing a simple blue skirt and pink T-shirt with blue flats. The other was tall for her age with shoulder length curly black hair; black eyes and skinny with brown skin, wearing a smart white blouse and pink skirt, white tights and pink flats. Seeing their struggles he stepped up with a polite smile.

"Hi, can I help?" He offered.

They both looked over at him for a moment before smiling and nodding and together they got everything on board the carriage and then climbed on, grabbing their stuff.

"Thank you, I'm Amara." The dark skinned girl said. "Amara Jackson."

The other girl smiled. "Carla Altobello."

"I'm Jefferson Winder." Jeff replied. "My friends call me Jeff."

The girls nodded and after some small polite pleasantries they went their separate ways, seeking compartments to sit before the train drove off. Eventually, he found one, there was a young boy inside, a fellow first year, but there was nobody else. Jeff knocked and opened the door.

"Hi, sorry, do you mind if I sit here?"

The boy smiled. "Sure, no problem."

Jeff sat down, noting the other boy, he was short with dark red hair, hazel eyes and fair skin, skinny and wearing a pair of jeans and a blue polo shirt.

There was a brief pause before Jeff spoke up.

"So, I'm Jeff Winder."

"Jamie McIntyre." The boy replied.

Jeff gave a small smile. "Ah...Scottish?"

Jamie nodded and Jeff shrugged.

"Sorry, just...you have a distinctive accent." He explained.

Jamie laughed. "It's cool...so do you, American, uh…"

Jeff nodded. "Maryland and not exactly, although my dad comes from there, I kinda...inherited it I guess."

Jamie nodded and they continued to talk, it seemed that Jamie was a helpful, reasonably intelligent young man who struggled socializing but tried his hardest and as the time went on he certainly came out of his shell. He explained that his parents, were a Wizard named Alec and a Muggle woman called Leigh.

"Oh, I'm kinda the opposite, my dad's a muggle and my mum a witch." Jeff explained.

"Wow, that's...wow." Jamie replied. "Well, dad operates a tree farm which is where I grew up."

"A tree farm?"

"Yeah, he grows the trees and supplies the wood to wandmakers like Ollivander and broomstick makers." Jamie explained.

Jeff smiled and they continued telling each other about their families until they paused.

The reason they paused was they hear a snooty nasal sounding voice of a girl who was walking past with two more girls. She was tall for her age with long straw blonde hair, hazel eyes and a skinny build, she was talking with the two girls and sharing some very arrogant views that made her views on those who were not Pure-Blood clear, she finally passed the compartment and was gone from view.

"Urgh, really, people still talk that way." Jeff grumbled.

Jamie shrugged. "Well...compared to how it used to be, at least she still accepts their actually Witches and Wizards, just sees them as being weaker ones."

Jeff shook his head. "Still doesn't make it right."

"I agree, but that's Pixie for you." Jamie explained, then saw Jeff's confused look. "Ah sorry, I've met her before on the platform and she was pretty, well, just like you saw her, towards me. That's how I found out her name, Pixie Masters."

Jeff nodded slowly, taking this in, but was distracted again by the sound of the arrival of the Witch with the trolley from whom they bought a number of tasty sweets, most especially Chocolate Frogs. They were soon passing time chatting again and eating their treats until finally, Jefferson checked the card from his first Chocolate Frog. He was a little surprised by how young the Witch shown looked. She was of medium height and slender with shoulder length black hair, dark brown eyes and olive skin, the name below the portrait read Jane Bennett. Reading the back he saw the details.

'No way, she's only twenty-four?' He thought in amazement as he read.

"Famous for defeating the Dark Wizard Solomon in a remarkable duel said to be rivalled only by the famed duel of 1945."

"Whoa, this Jane Bennett is pretty impressive." He remarked.

That was when Jamie took note.

He smiled and checked the card and shook his head.

"They barely even touched on it...I'm kinda a magical history buff, so learned a bout this." Jamie explained. "But yeah, she is incredible, she was captured with a bunch of other young Witches and Wizards by this Solomon guy and his followers. She had hid her wand and retrieved it to free herself and her fellow captives, working together they began to fight against Solomon and his men through the castle that Solomon used as a base. The battle stretched over three days…"

"Three?"

Jamie nodded. "Yeah. In the end, only Jane Bennett and Solomon were left, on the gatehouse of the castle and that's when the duel began. Yeah that 1945 duel that they say rivalled it is the famous duel between Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindlewald. Jane won the duel and Solomon, out of shame and seeing that Ministry officials had arrived to arrest him, threw himself off the gatehouse to his death. So she was the only survivor."

"They...they put her on a Chocolate Frog card for that?" Jeff asked in shock.

"Yeah, well, their version in which they say it was just her and Solomon who fought." Jamie replied with a shake of his head. "They...don't want to make Solomon into the evil leader that he was and the memory of those lost was too painful. It only happened two years ago too...This card is actually brand new."

Jeff took it, amazed by all that he heard. But they quickly had to put things away and change into their Hogwarts robes as they were soon to arrive at Hogwarts at last.

Soon, they were disembarking from the train with the other students. As all the other students were making their way off Hogsmeade station, a loud voice got their attention.

"Firs' years, firs' years over 'ere!"

It was a giant of a man with wild black hair and beard, black eyes and he was holding a lantern up. Sharing a nervous look with the girls, Tim walked with the other first years and followed the giant man as he led them down to the docks by the lake where several boats were waiting for them.

"No more than four to a boat." The large man ordered.

With that they were all inside and soon the boats moved on their own, heading towards Hogwarts in the distance. Jeff stared up in awe at the wondrous sight.

'It's even better than any story you've ever heard of it…'

Still smiling he did his best to calm the nervousness that was beginning to build. Soon they had reached the other side and left the boat, following the large man up the stairs to a large set of double doors which he then knocked on and after a pause they opened and Jeff knew, this was it.
