Chapter 3
The door opened to reveal a tall Witch with black hair tied back in a tight bun, dark eyes swept over them and she had a serious expression. Carla had a strong feeling she didn't want to get on the wrong side of this woman.
"The firs' years, Professor McGonagall." Hagrid said.
"Thank you Hagrid. I will take them from here." She said and guided the First Years in. "Now, this way, I will be taking you to where you will wait until it is time for the Sorting."
A few First Years shared confused or worried looks, others didn't seem bothered. Carla glanced at Adele who was next to her and smiled warmly at her.
"Don't worry, no matter how this ends up, you know we'll find ways to talk and see each other." Adele whispered.
Carla returned the smile at that. "I know, still, it'd be cool if we did end up in the same House."
They fell quiet and listened to McGonagall again as they stood in a chamber just off the Entrance Hall, near the large double doors they had seen which undoubtedly led into the Great Hall.
"Now, while we are setting everything up I'll expect you to make yourselves presentable." She remarked. "There are four Houses here at Hogwarts, in alphabetical order they are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. Now each house has produced Witches and Wizards of renown and no one house is superior to any other."
She paused and sent a sharp glare at Pixie and another girl, both of whom gave derisive snorts at that remark.
It was not long after this, following some time alone to prepare themselves that they were then led into the Great Hall and all was set up, the First Years were all in awe of their surroundings, the Great Hall was certainly incredible for them all and this was only their first night, they hadn't even been sorted yet. That was about to come however as Professor McGonagall lifted up the Sorting Hat and unrolled a scroll and spoke up.
"Now, when I call your name, you will come up and sit on the stool." She explained. "I will place the Sorting Hat on your head and you will then be sorted and can go and join your House table."
Each of the Houses sat at a long table in the room, running down the length of the great hall, each with a banner showing each House's emblem animal and colours hanging above the table. Ahead on the raised section of the hall was the staff table.
McGonagall then called out the first name on her list.
"Adams, Jason."
The boy stepped forwards, looking pale and shaky. As he did so, Carla took notice of Jeff Winder who she remembered from Platform 9 and ¾ nudge the red haired boy next to him and whispered.
"Jamie look at the staff table, it's her."
Carla followed their gaze as the red haired boy gasped too. She then saw one of the people sitting at the staff table, a notably young woman with familiar features.
Carla recognized her too, from the Chocolate Frog card. 'That's Jane Bennett, what is she doing here?'
But she was soon pulled out of her thoughts after Jason Adams had been made a Gryffindor and Reena Ali a Hufflepuff.
McGonagall then spoke up again.
"Altobello, Carla."
Carla swallowed and walked up to the stool and sat down, the Sorting Hat was placed on her head.
"Ah, right then." The Hat said in her head. "Hmmm, well, well, that's interesting. I think I know just what to do with you, my dear. But tell me, what do you think?"
"I want to know more about Magic." She replied instinctually. "I want to learn."
"Exactly, learn." The Hat replied before then calling out. "Ravenclaw!"
Carla smiled and once the Hat was removed, she headed for the table until the blue and bronze banner which was applauding.
"Welcome to Ravenclaw." An older boy that she sat next to greeted her.
She smiled back. "Thank you."
She turned back to the Sorting to see Thomas Barnett get sorted into Slytherin along with the next boy, Troy Burton. The next girl stood out due to her confidence as she stepped up, Francis Castle was of medium height, taller than most of the other girls, with long blonde hair and brown eyes, pale skin and a thick build. She sat under the hat for almost a full minute before it finally announced.
"Gryffindor!"
Indeed, Carla noticed that the Hat took varying amounts of time to decide who would go to which house, sometimes instantly, others anything up to nearly five minutes.
So it was through that method that Richard Davis and Colin Franks were both in Hufflepuff, Erica Drake and Richie Duke in Gryffindor and Frank Edwards in Ravenclaw.
"Gallagher, Jason."
The boy that stepped forwards stood out at once, he was certainly above medium height for his age with short reddish-brown brown hair and blue eyes, pale and slender with a long lean build, Carla had a feeling that come second year, whatever House he ended up in would have it's Quidditch Captain seeking to add this boy to the team.
The Hat needed only a few seconds to decide. "Gryffindor!"
Carla shrugged. 'Shame, it would've been nice to have him here...oh, maybe this boy though.'
After Michael Graham was made a Slytherin, Michael Halder had been called forwards, he was around five one with a think but athletic build, black hair and green eyes, he also had a thoughtful pensive look that gave him the expression of a thinker. Again, it seemed to be a no brainer for the Hat.
"Ravenclaw!"
Sure enough the Sorting continued with another Hatstall as it took five minutes before Taylor Henderson was made a Hufflepuff. Another Hufflepuff was chosen when Alyssa Hill, a short girl with chin length silvery blonde hair, green eyes, pale skin and skinny. Then was Jennifer Howells and Roberta Irvine, Roberta was below medium height with medium length brown hair and brown eyes, slender and fair skinned while Jennifer's appearance was more shocking, worryingly skinny with pale skin and grey eyes, short and with a shaved head. Both were soon made Slytherins and then.
"Jackson, Amara."
Carla gasped and held her breath, fingers crossed.
Unfortunately as it turned out the result was Amara ending up in Gryffindor but they still shared a smile and the Sorting went on with three girls and a boy being sorted next, two Ravenclaws and the boy and third girl going to Hufflepuff. Pixie Masters was sorted into Gryffindor which made a scowl cross Amara's face. After Warren Matthews was made a Ravenclaw, the next name caught Carla's attention.
"McIntyre, Jamie."
It was the red-headed boy Jeff had spoken to and he sat on the stool for a while, but not quite a Hatstall, he was finally sorted into Hufflepuff as was Leanne Oakley who had gone after Holly Norris who became a Slytherin, Leanne was a short girl with long very light brown almost blonde hair, brown eyes and pale skin. They were fairly getting through the sorting with Carla using her analytical mind to keep track of them all:
Clinton Roberts, Ravenclaw.
Julie Ross, Ravenclaw.
A pair of twins, Lakshmi and Saanvi Singh: Slytherin and Hufflepuff respectively.
Cole Waters, Gryffindor
Alicia Webb, Gryffindor
Matthew Weasley, Gryffindor
Carla White, Slytherin
Then finally, with only four left to sort, McGonagall called out the next name.
"Winder, Jefferson."
Carla watched as Jeff went up to the stool, curious about where he'd end up. She still smiled recalling his kindness back at the platform. After a genuine Hatstall, the Hat announced.
"Slytherin!"
The Slytherin table applauded as Jeff went to join them, Carla caught his eye and smiled, nodded to him. Finally Theresa and Henry Yates, another pair of twins, were sorted into Ravenclaw and Slytherin respectively and then Paul Zinn was the last Ravenclaw and the Sorting was over.
With the Sorting over, all eyes were on the venerable Headmaster, Professor Dumbledore as he stood up and smiled.
"I just have a few start of term notices to announce before our feast. First I must remind our older students, while also informing our new students that the dark forest in the grounds is out of bounds to all students." He said firmly, but then smiled. "Now, I also have the pleasure of announcing our new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Jane Bennett."
Applause went throughout the whole Great Hall while the young woman merely gave a small smile and a raise of her hand, looking uncomfortable. It was clear many knew of the young woman's story.
Once things had calmed down, Dumbledore then announced. "Now, let the feast, begin."
With that the tables were instantly laden with food, much to the delight of all students as the feast began and the first night at Hogwarts got truly underway.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
