Chapter 7

It was hard to believe for the First Years but they soon found they had been at Hogwarts for a month now. But even then, it wasn't all good. Far from being humbled, Pixie seemed to be even worse at her bullying. She even had a new target, Jamie.

"Well, well." She sneered as she spotted Jamie talking with Jeff. "If it isn't the boring average little Puff. Better get away from that snake before he makes you just as bad as him."

Both boys glared at her.

"Honestly Pixie, what's wrong with you?" Jeff remarked. "You keep acting like this, I've not done anything to you-"

"Oh shut up, stop talking, Slytherin." Pixie snarked at him. "You exist and that's bad enough, all you Slytherins are a problem."

Jamie shook his head. "Funny, every single other person in this school that we've spoken to say you're the problem. Being an unlikeable bully."

Pixie narrowed her eyes, once again seemingly hypocritically getting angry at that word, despite her own obvious actions.

However she merely smirked at last and shook her head.

"Well, no matter, I'm still better than both of you. I at least belong here, as you'll soon learn, you'll have nothing but humiliation waiting for you soon."

Her words confused them, until they saw the notice that she had clearly seen already. It seemed that they were to have their first Flying Lessons that very afternoon.

Madam Hooch, the school's Flying Instructor and Quidditch Referee, stood waiting with a collection of school broomsticks as the students made their way to their first Flying Lesson.

"Good, you're all here, welcome to your first Flying Class." Madam Hooch greeted them. "Now first and foremost, you will focus and pay attention or you will be removed from this class for good. It is imperative that you do pay attention, the least distraction can have severe consequences-That warning to pay attention includes you, Miss Masters."

Madam Hooch sent a sharp look at Pixie who had been snickering about something. Pixie quickly blushed but focused and, wisely on her part, didn't talk back.

"Now. Everyone step up to a broom, keep it to your right hand side as you do so." Madam Hooch instructed. "Then hold your right hand over your broom and, with feeling, say 'Up'."

They all did so, but only a handful of brooms leapt up into their respective First Years hands, to Pixie's great humiliation, hers was one of those which didn't. But Jamie, Jeff as well as Amara and Carla all had their brooms leap up into their hands. Seeing this Pixie glared at them, she would have more cause as time went on as soon she would be exposed as a fraud. Despite previous bragging, it was clear Pixie just wasn't any good at Flying, yet surprisingly, Jamie, Jeff, Amara and Carla seemed to be naturals who quickly took to flying and Madam Hooch herself seemed quite impressed with them. When Flying class ended and they began making their way back to the castle, Pixie was glaring mutinously at each of them, clearly not happy with how things had turned out at all. Knowing Pixie she'd be scheming some way to get back at them, but for them that was the least of their worries right now.

Entering the Clock Tower Courtyard after yet another Potions class full of stress and pressure from Slughorn's expectations, Jeff sighed and shook his head. He managed a smile however when he saw Jamie sitting by the fountain. Jamie looked up at that moment and smiled, waving Jeff over. Jeff came to join him and sighed as he sat down.

"Hey."

Jamie quirked an eyebrow. "More trouble in Potions?"

Jeff nodded. "Yeah, it's...it's not fair. Professor Slughorn keeps pushing me, he doesn't seem to understand or accept that I don't even like Potions that much. He thinks just because my mother was brilliant at it, I must be too."

"You're right, it does sound crazy. Any homework?" Jamie replied.

Jeff shook his head. "I'll manage, it's nothing too difficult this time."

Jamie nodded slowly, looking around and, considering the date and what was approaching, Jamie grinned.

"Hey, I might be able to help cheer you up." He said. "Think about it, what day it is...what's almost coming up."

Jeff tilted his head. "Huh, I don't...oh wait, yeah. Halloween."

"Exactly, the Halloween Feast is bound to be great, the Professors are already planning to decorate the hall and I heard from one of the older students that Professor Dumbledore usually has a trope of Dancing Skeletons. That'd be a sight to see." Jamie said with a grin.

Jeff laughed softly but nodded in agreement. "Yeah, I...I can't argue with that. Thanks Jamie, I...I appreciate it and I'm glad to have you as a friend."

Jamie smiled softly, what he didn't say however, as he didn't want Jeff to worry, was that Jeff was Jamie's only friend, his fellow Hufflepuffs being acquaintances at best.

At the same time the boys were having their talk, the girls were hanging out together talking, in this case, Amara was lamenting her own troubles, which to no one's surprise, least of all Carla's, involved Pixie Masters.

"I swear, she's getting even worse. I think she just can't take anyone being better than her at anything or calling her out for her bullying." Amara remarked sadly.

Carla nodded sagely. "Yeah, I've noticed that too. Hmm...I can't imagine it makes things easy for you in the Common Room, or dormitory."

Amara sighed. "Yeah, she's somehow got Alicia Webb and Erica Drake to follow her, but I don't think they really believe her views, they're just trying to protect themselves."

"But none of the other girls, in Gryffindor or even Ravenclaw fear her, they don't even remotely like her.

"I think there's practically no girl in this school who like her...but only a few of them actively dislike her. The others fall into trying to avoid her out of fear." Amara agreed. "Like it or not her 'popularity' is just due to her father being high up in the Ministry."

Carla nodded and both girls sighed, lamenting their unfortunate situation with Pixie Masters, but hoping that the upcoming Halloween Feast would give them a much needed chance to cheer up and enjoy themselves.
