Chapter 12

Meeting up in the corridor, as arranged, Carla and Amara looked around warily.

"What are we supposed to do now?" Amara asked. "I know we arranged to meet here and look for clues about what might have happened to Jamie, but. What now?"

Carla sighed and bit her lip. "We don't have anything definite. The only clue for definite was that book that was found, but there has to be more."

"So, it's a wild goose chase, just search until we find something?" Amara said with a sigh.

"I know, sorry." Carla said sadly.

Amara shook her head. "It's okay, it's not your fault. Let's, let's get started."

Nodding the both looked around warily and, listened, nothing. So they pulled out their wands and spoke at the same time.

"Lumos."

Their wands lit up and they began looking around the corridor for any clues.

"I don't think this corridor was used much...Mr. Filch didn't seem to clean it much either." Amara noted. "Look at these footprints in the dust."

"Tell me about it, but there's too many, all over each other." Carla remarked. "But, hold on, these ones seem fresh and...look like another First Year."

Amara shook her head. "It can't be Jamie as he's missing...do you think someone else was here, why?"

"Maybe they're searching too, but-"

They were cut off however when they heard a muffled shout coming from down the corridor and around a corner, in the direction the fresh footprints went.

"What the-?" Amara gasped.

"That way, c'mon." Carla called.

She led the way as they ran in the direction of the sound.

Earlier, before the girls had arrived, Jeff had followed the clue he was given and had turned a corner on the corridor and followed the instructions in the note, reaching the door that the note mentioned.

'No sign of anyone...strange, they said they were waiting.' He thought in confusion. 'Unless. Wait a minute, maybe they're inside.'

Swallowing nervously, the young Slytherin tried the door, it opened. He slipped inside, but he couldn't see much, the room was dark, but he could hear something, a strange rustling sound.

"What is...Lumos." He muttered before calling the spell, raising his wand.

The moment he lit up his wand he let out a cry of shock and horror at the sight before him, a plant he unfortunately recognized from the theory notes on it in Herbology.

'Devil's Snare!?'

It was then he realized, to his horror, that the plant was closing in on him, he had learned all too well what the plant was capable of.

'Oh no, it's...wait, it hates the light, of course.' His mind raced as he remembered.

He reacted quickly and tried to drive the plant back, using his lit wand, some tendrils pulled back as the light struck them, only to start to close in again when the light left. Jeff looked around wildly and saw no sign of Jamie, or anyone else, that was when he realized he'd been tricked, it was a trap.

He knew right then that he had to escape and after using the light from Lumos to try and push the tendrils back a bit more before turning to the door.

"No."

The door was currently covered with the tendrils, blocking his escape. Before he could do anything else he suddenly let out a strangled yelp as a tendril wrapped around his neck and practically lifted him off his feet, another wrapped around his wrists, trying to dislodge his wand.

'No, no, this can't-!'

More tendrils struck, his clothes ripping while he continued to struggle, without much success, trying to get free. But Devil's Snare was too powerful and he knew he was in serious danger. His wand tip extinguished the light, but he still kept his grip on his wand tight. The last thing he saw before the light fully went out was the tendrils withdrawing from the door. The plant knew it had trapped its prey and didn't need to block the escape anymore.

'No, this can't be how it ends...please…' His mind raced.

But even so, it was getting harder to breath, he thought for sure this was it when suddenly the door burst open.

"What the, Merlin's Beard!"

It was Clara and Amara, somehow they'd found him. They reacted at once, using their own wand lights to force Devil's Snare back. Jeff gasped for air as the tendrils loosened their grip. Enough that Amara was able to pull him away, his clothes torn and tattered, but luckily now he was free as they got out of the room and slammed the door shut.

Catching their breath the trio were just relieved that sudden attack was over.

"What...what was that about, what are you doing here?" Amara asked. "How did that Devil's Snare even…?"

Jeff shook his head. "I don't know, but it was a trap, I got led here by a note, this one actually."

He handed it to them and they read it, startled.

"Wait, so...someone lured you into that room?" Carla gasped. "That's...that's crazy, how...what are you even doing here Jeff?"

Jeff sighed. "I wanted to see if I could find anything that could help me find Jamie. He's my friend, I wanted to help him out."

"Wait, seriously, that's why we're here." Amara said. "I know we only really got to know him over Christmas, but we were hoping to talk more with Jamie, become actual friends with him.

Clara nodded. "Then he disappeared, so we came here to look for clues, to see if we could find anything to help."

All of them were indeed surprised by this, they had all been here for the same reason.

"So...going forward." Jeff began. "How about we look into this together?"

The girls agreed and Jeff was relieved to finally have some help, but it was also agreed that they'd wait till the following day to determine their next move, instead all slipping back to their dorms with Jeff having to slip out of and dispose of his ruined clothes before setting up fresh ones for the following day and then getting into bed at last.
