Chapter 13

So it was the following day, although tired, the trio were hopeful as they met up after breakfast to discuss any possible findings or ideas.

"So, all we know is that Jamie vanished a few days after Christmas, right before the New Year." Jeff remarked.

Carla nodded. "Yeah, that book that Mr. Warren and Professor Bennett found, I'm sure it's important...but I can't think where I've seen it before."

"I just hope we can figure out quickly...every second it takes is longer for Jamie to be stuck...wherever he is. Who knows what is happening to him…" Amara said softly.

They dwelled solemnly on that thought for a moment, until finally a voice from behind interrupted them.

"What are you three doing standing around here, shouldn't you be getting to class?"

They turned to see it was James Warren, standing there smiling warmly.

"Oh sorry, um, we were just." Carla tried to offer an excuse.

James shook his head. "Talking about Mr. McIntyre's disappearance, I would have thought you'd talked enough about it last night."

"Wh-what are you-?" Jeff began.

"I know you were all out last night and that one of you...had an issue." He looked pointedly at Jeff. "Listen, don't do that again okay. Leave rescuing Mr. McIntyre to the Professors, alright."

"He's my friend...our friend." Jeff began.

Amara shook her head however. "Sorry sir, you're right, we'll leave it, let's go guys, let's get to class."

But she sent them a look to make her message clear, they weren't actually giving up and so they went along silently, already planning their next step.

"Mr. Winder, are you listening?"

Jeff started and looked up, blushing at being caught day-dreaming. Professor Bennett was watching him with a serious expression.

"I...sorry Professor."

Professor Bennett shook her head. "Don't let it happen again, now pay attention, we were learning about Gytrashes."

Jeff did his best to focus, but he couldn't help but worry about Jamie during the lesson, it was why his mind had wandered. But he was sadly still unable to find anything that could help him figure out where Jamie could be, or what that book was, apparently Carla was sure it was important although he couldn't understand how yet. Finally the lesson ended and everybody was starting to pack up, but Professor Bennett then called out.

"Mr Winder, stay behind, we need to talk."

Jeff tensed, but did so, worried about what he was about to face. Amara and Clara sent him a worried look and left the classroom, but he had a feeling they were waiting outside. Swallowing nervously he stepped up the teacher's desk.

"Professor Bennett?"

She sat in silence for a moment, fixing him with a steely gaze, then her expression softened and she spoke.

"This is not like you, Mr. Winder." She said gently. "You're normally one of my most attentive students."

Jeff grimaced, he knew he couldn't hide it anymore.

Bowing his head he had to explain.

"It's...It's Jamie Professor, he's my friend, I can't...I can't just leave this."

"You really should, it's the job of the Professors." Professor Bennett explained, but then sighed. "But I understand you wanting to help your friend. I'm guessing Miss Jackson and Miss Altobello are the same."

"Y-yes Professor."

Professor Bennett nodded. "I see. Well listen, this will be dangerous, if you insist on looking for Mr. McIntyre, you'll need to learn more defensive spells. Also, take this."

Jeff was a little perplexed at what he was hearing, even more so when she handed him a pale grey stone with a strange rune on it.

"This stone is enchanted. If you're in danger it'll warn me and I'll be able to come and help." Professor Bennett explained. "Now, to teach you these new spells you'll need, you'll also need to practice the other spells your were taught this year, Levioso is surprisingly good in a duel, you'll find."

"Yes Professor." Jeff said breathlessly, amazed at hearing this. "Can, can I get Amara and Carla. They should learn too."

"Good idea, very well, now hurry." Professor Bennett told them.

With that Jeff hurried to get the girls, a new hope springing within him, this might be their best chance yet to do something to help find Jamie.

When Jeff brought the girls back into the class, they saw that Professor Bennett had moved the desks out of the way and set up training dummies in a row before where the teacher's desk used to sit.

"Good, you're here, wands out."

They did so and waited, eager and hopeful.

Professor Bennett however shook her head. "Now listen very carefully, I am not teaching you these spells in order for you to go looking for trouble and I expect you to continue your studies even if things start to take a long time. These spells are to ensure that if you do end up in trouble regardless, you'll have the means to defend yourself, understand."

They all nodded.

"Yes Professor." Carla said in response.

"Alright, let's get started, you'll be using what you learned this year and three new spells." Professor Bennett explained. "You'll be learning a more powerful version of the smokescreen spell, the Full Body-Bind Curse and, most importantly. The Disarming Charm. Now, get ready."

They nodded, raising their wand and waiting for Professor Bennett to begin the extra lesson, determined to be ready as much as possible, in order to face whatever trouble they had to deal with in order to save Jamie if it came down to it being up to them.
