Chapter 28

Invisible (My Song)

Her breathing had been uneven when she opened the door, running as fast as she could once she heard what happened. It must've been scary to see I guess, both the running and the breathing, but more so her way of standing by the door, staring into the room. Though the school's nurse seemed more surprised, rather than scared, to find a teenager like Mel by her door, asking about her brother's whereabouts and wellbeing. Is it not normal for a teen to care for their sibling? The nurse eventually let her in. Mel had practically pushed her out of the way once she did, desperate to get to her brother, desperate to make sure he's okay. But once she found him her uneven breathing came to a halt.

The lights were out in the room he's in and his unconscious form lying on a bed, but that's not what froze her in her step. That girl… that very same girl with the blue hair, that very same girl that kidnapped and beat him, was sitting on a chair next to him.

Within an instance her mind had grown dark and her gaze fixated on the girl whose name she doesn't remember – did she ever know it? The girl had cowered in the chair under her gaze, trying to become as small as possible, trying to evade it. Her behavior did nothing but fuel Mel's suspicions of her, which would only intensify her gaze even more. Had it not been for the nurse's presence they would've been like that for god knows how long. She informed Mel of the rashes, bug bites and redness on Edd's body, the allergy medicine he'd been given and that that's more than likely what caused him to fall asleep. Nothing that the nurse had said suggested that the blue haired girl did anything to him – this time. She had then handed Mel a note and told her that they're allowed to take him home for the day; that they could stay home with him to keep an eye on his rashes and make sure that the medicine really does help.

And that's where they are currently; Mel carrying Edd in her arms, walking home in silence with the blue haired girl – Marie – following in her footsteps. None of them say anything to the other, both walking with their tongues glued to the roofs of their mouths. One is too afraid to speak, the other ready to snap if a word is to be spoken. They eventually reach their house, Marie allowing Mel the space she needs to get the door open but hurries to help keep the door open for her. Mel glances down at her, noting her actions and make several mental notes before she heads in, leaving Marie to close the door on her way in.

"Hey." Mel says, breaking the silence and causing Marie to jump in surprise. Their eyes meet, both trying to read each other. "Follow me." She says curtly as she starts walking up the stairs, heading towards Edd's room, his unconscious form firmly and securely in her arms. Every possible thought is running wild in her mind, her steps getting heavier by each and everyone she takes. The nurse had told her of the possibility that the rashes were due to mite allergies, mites he's surely gotten in contact with in this house, in his room. Reaching the top of the staircase, she stops in her tracks. Marie slows down to a halt, halfway up the stairs. Mel is turned in the direction of Edd's room but eventually turns in the opposite direction; the direction of her room. "This way," Is all she says to Marie who keeps following in silence. Reaching her bedroom door, she stands still once again and looks up at Marie, waiting for her to meet her gaze. "Open it, please." She says, nodding her head towards the door. That's all it takes for the blue haired girl to understand and she hurries into action.

Holding the door open she hesitates to follow Mel into the room, understanding that this cannot be Double-D's own room – that it must be Mel's. Biting her lip, she stands nervously by the door and watches as the ginger girl carries Double-D to her bed, gently placing him on it, tucking his hair underneath his beanie carefully. She then stands up straight, her true height revealed once again as she turns her head towards Marie. The way she stares at her from the darkened room, the way her eyes nearly glows, it somehow reminds her of what little she saw of Eddy's older brother, the way he stared at all of the kids from the cul-de-sac. The way he stared at her…

She remembers when he was "defeated" and Lee cracked the brilliant idea of having some Kanker-fun with his unconscious form… only he wasn't far from waking up again. Yes, she's always known that the word "fun" means different things when you're talking to an adult, even what some of those "things" are… she just never thought an adult would try to do those things to a child, let alone three at the same time. May and Lee had been the first ones to get out of the trailer and though it hadn't been easy for them – as they had been within reaching range to him – Marie had been the one he got his hands on the most. Once they realized he was reaching for their younger sister, Lee and Marie had both jumped him. Lee had managed to drag May away from him as Marie fought him, trying to hold him back as Lee got May out of there, only to become the next target herself. He had tried to steal a kiss from her but she managed to evade it, only to have him licking and biting her cheek and neck, panting heavily as he did, making noises. His breath on her skin had felt like steam, burning her. Holding her arms up with steel grip in one hand, his other was free to feel her – up her shirt, down her pants, underneath her underwear, between her… between her… he caressed her skin roughly; it hurt, and had it not been for her panic kicking in she's not sure how far he would've gone. He had tried to pull her closer to him, forcing her back towards him. The panic took away her ability to scream for help, but it gave her the strength to fight back; kicking him between the legs, biting his hand once it was within reach, drawing blood, before she was free and able to run towards the door, running as fast as she could. He had shouted something after her. She's doesn't know what, but she has a few guesses, and she's not sure why but his shouting had caused her to turn around just briefly. His eyes… his eyes had been burning in the dark, glowing, staring at her as a predator stares at its prey that got away; furious – planning

She hadn't been able to speak for weeks after, let alone eat. It was enough to drive their mother insane with worry, and after having tried with everything she could think of she took her daughters on a journey… where they went she doesn't know… she doesn't remember. But she eventually got better. She eventually started eating again, and after that she soon started talking again. Her sisters called it a vacation, something she doubts it was, but for their sake she calls it that too. If only she could forget his eyes… those eyes staring at her… glowing in the dark…

"Are you okay?" Mel says; her voice sudden enough to snap Marie out of her head, though the fear remains. She's still standing in the dark room, her eyes glowing as she looks at the younger girl, just like his did. They're not the same eyes and Marie knows that; she knows that… but it's still getting harder to breathe. The images she wants to forget reappear, memories making themselves known yet again. She's lost in her mind again. Unable to breathe, she doesn't know where she is – where are her sisters?!

"Hey!" Mel calls out, louder than before, bringing Marie back to reality once more. She's not in the dark room anymore. Her eyes aren't glowing anymore. A few seconds go by where they just stand there, looking at each other in silence. Blinking a few times, Marie feel her body relax a bit; she can breathe again.

Her face painted in the color of concern, Mel takes a step closer to Marie and kneels down to her level, trying to make eye contact in a nonthreatening way. It seems to work; Marie's breathing slows down a bit, reaching a more normal speed. She's calming down, though it's still clear as day that she's afraid of her.

Mel tries to think, taking a deep breath to clear her mind a bit. "Are you okay?" She asks again, not sure whether Marie heard her the first time or not.

Marie nods. "Y-yeah, I'm fine." She doesn't sound – or look – fine.

Resisting the urge and habit to raise a questioning eyebrow to the sky, Mel decides to trust the girl, this time. "You don't seem like it." She tells her. "So why don't you stay here, with Edd, while I clean out his room and such?"

"Are you sure?" Marie asks, a small frown making its way onto her forehead. "Don't you… wouldn't you rather have me within sight?"

"Mmyeah, but it will be okay." Mel says, shrugging a little bit as she's fighting her inner thoughts about this girl, based off of the first interaction they ever had. "You don't really seem like you're up to cause any trouble right now, and it would be easier for me to clean if I knew there's someone watching over him, you know? Makes sure he doesn't try and run away from home and back to school, or something like that." Marie doesn't say anything to that, she just looks at the ginger girl in front of her with a question mark for a face. "But hopefully it won't come to that, so you shouldn't have anything to worry about and can just relax for a while. Sounds good?" She pauses for a short moment as if she's waiting for Marie to answer her, but soon continues without actually allowing her. "Great!" She says with a big smile and claps her hands together as she stands up again. "Let's get to it." And with that she starts walking towards Edd's room, leaving Marie behind to watch over him while she cleans.

Marie stands where she is, watching the older girl walk away from her until she disappears behind a door. A few seconds go by before she moves her gaze into the room before her. The dark doesn't scare her as much now that there aren't any eyes staring at her. Taking a deep breath, she enters the room as quietly as she can, even closing the door behind her slowly, hoping it won't wake him up. She does her best to not walk "loudly" in the room, and soon enough she reaches the bed where he still lays unconscious (asleep). She twists her lips a little. It doesn't feel right to sit on the bed next to him. Looking around in the dark room, she eventually sees a desk that's not too far away from the bed. Carefully she moves the desk chair so that it will stand by the bed's side. Much like in the nurse's office; Marie sits down on the chair and watches him sleep.

The ticking of a clock she didn't know was in the room soon becomes the only thing she hears, the only thing that kills the deafening silence… that and the soft breathing of the boy in front of her. She looks at him, leans in a little closer to get a sort of better look. Her eyes have almost completely adapted to the lack of light in the room, and she can tell that most of the rosy color on his cheeks has gone away. Good… that's good. She's not sure about his shoulders though. Thinking about it for a moment, she decides against moving him and leaves him be – lets him sleep.

She's never seen him this weak before – she doesn't know what to do. Normally she (and her sisters) would be the reason why he'd end up sort of like this, but now… now she has no idea what to think or what to do. So… she'll just do what Mel told her to do; keep an eye on him – cuz' apparently that's something you need to do whenever he gets sick?

Back at the Peach Creek High & Junior High, Lee and May Kanker have just arrived at school, talking loudly as they walk down the hallways of the building, being the way that Kanker's are. The sister duo is slowly making their way to their (for them) first class of the day, eager to meet up with their third sister and hear what she's been up to while they've been split up. Boy, do they get surprised when they notice how she's not there to meet them! And there's the teacher – guess they're stuck in this classroom for the next hour. Oh well, they can always look for her afterwards. It's not like she's run off somewhere without them.

At least that's what they told each other for the start. Now however, they've reached the last class for the day – some stupid kids are already getting ready to go home – and they've yet to find Marie anywhere. It's not like her to just suddenly run off on her own like this… right? What if something bad happened to her? Her sisters' won't be able to help her if they don't know where she is! Going from confused but hopeful to confused and worried, Lee marches around the school's many hallways, ignoring the bell ringing in for class, May following like a lost little puppy, talking to herself about how weird it is that they haven't found Marie yet. Her sweet little voice have never been so infuriatingly annoying as it is right now, but even Lee knows that yelling at her because of it won't solve anything – right now.

They're just about to round the same corner again for a third time when Lee suddenly sees something that could shed some light onto the situation, and cheer them up some (mostly cheer them up some): Her dreamboat and May's Big Lug of a man. With a big, ugly grin decorating her face, she leads her younger sister into another corner, waiting for the right moment to pounce. ~And here they come~

"KANKER!" Eddy screams from the top of his lunges as soon as he sees them, but it's already too late. Jumped from behind, tied up and kissed into oblivion, the two Eds are being dragged away into the closest ladies restroom to face their fates.

Dragging their victims where no one will find them, the Kanker sisters laugh and giggle in their typical manner as they look at their prey shaking in fear of their mere presence. If only they didn't have a more important matter to take care of… oh well; they can always have a bit of fun once they're done with their interrogation, right? Give their boyfriends a gift for being so good, or punishment if they're bad, something like that, right? May certainly likes that idea, whereas Lee is a bit more straightforward today.

Stepping in front of her dreamboat, Lee looks down at his shaking and quivering form. If only… "Where's Marie?" She asks, straight to the point. So much in fact that May remembers why they did this to begin with.

"Yeah!" May joins her sister, stopping the cuddle session she just started with her big Ed, putting her hands on her hips and a frown on her face. "We've been looking all over for her!"

Both Eddy and Ed remain silent for a couple of seconds, confused and terrified. "Huh?" Eddy eventually… says?

Lee frowns at him, but he can't tell, grabs him by his hairs and pulls him up to her level. "Marie! Our sister! Where is she?!" She shouts at him and drops him to the floor again. "We've been looking all over this school without finding her! Did something happen to her?! I swear if something happened to her someone will pay for it – Kanker style!" She growls as she rolls up her nonexistent sleeves.

"OOooOOhh!" May chirps in. "I like making people pay in Kanker style!"

Eddy looks at them, going back and forth between them. "Wait…" He starts. "You didn't hear?"

"Hear what, Skipper?!" Lee shouts at him. So much for dreamboat.

He just raises an eyebrow at her. "She's with Double-D and Mel, at their home." He tells her, mechanically.

It's quiet in the restroom for a short moment. "What?!" …until Lee starts shouting again.

"She's at her boyfriend's house?" May asks, confused as ever. "With that other girl?"

"Other girl?" Eddy asks, slowly getting confused himself. "Are you talking about Mel?"

"What is she doing at her boyfriend's house with another girl?" Lee asks loudly to herself. "Is she trying to see if he'll cheat on her or something?"

Eddy just looks at them, confusion painting itself on his face and his eyebrows pointing upwards. "What are you talking about?!" He snaps at them. They don't hear him.

"Wait…" May says, seeming very disturbed all of a sudden. "…don't they live together?"

"You're right! They do!" Lee says, snapping her finger as she connects the dots. "That must be why she's there with them! Why else would they live together like that?"

"BECAUSE THEY'RE BROTHER AND SISTER!" Silence – sweet, sweet silence. The two Kanker sisters simply stare at the almost completely bald Ed, sitting on the floor of the restroom, tied up and face covered in kissy lipstick marks. He breathes heavily, trying to calm down from the whole messy mess he and Ed somehow managed to end up in – again. Taking a deep breath and holding it in for a few seconds, he soon notices that the two Kanker sisters are still silent, both looking at him with chocked and surprised expressions on their faces – well, to be truthful he can only see the face of one of them, but given how silent the other is as well, it can only mean she's surprised too. Letting his breath out, he looks at both of them and decides to sort it out for them. "Double-D and Mel are brother and sister." He tells them, straightforward, no shouting. "Their parents got married and now they live together in Double-D's house as brother and sister. That's it. The end." Their expressions calm down some, they really do, but there's still this thin layer of confusion that he can see in – well, that he can see in May's eyes. "As for why Marie is at their house right now is because she's helping Mel. Double-D got some bad reaction to… I don't remember what it was. But, Marie helped me get him to the nurse's office where I left her to look after him while Lumpy and I took care of taking notes for him during class, to keep him updated and so. As we were doing that, Double-D got some medication that made him pass out, Mel got to the nurse's office too and was told that she and Marie could take him home to look after him and make sure the medication does the trick, and that's what they're doing right now."

While May is doing her best to follow with all the things Eddy just told them, Lee looks confused over the whole scenario. Marie did that? Her sister, Marie Kanker, did what Eddy, her dreamboat, just told her she did? Marie? Out of all the Kankers – it would've made more sense if it was May, who is so incredibly sensitive to stuff like that, but Marie? I mean, normally they would be the reason why someone needed to be taken care of like that, which means… she's not growing soft, is she?

What are you doing, Marie?

Song: Invisible (My Song) – Laleh

I hope this wasn't too hard to read; I tried to not go too far into detail about the subject, but at the same time not make it too "censored", so to speak. Anyway, hope you liked the chapter. I wanna try and post another one soon and then I'll probably go back to my regular schedule. See you then!
