Chapter 6: Shamshel, The F(odder)ourth Angel.

"Another Angel has been spotted at Tokyo-3!"

Asuka almost spat her drink out upon hearing the German lieutenant's words. A question appeared in her mind: "But it's supposed to appear after a whole month after The Third Angel's defeat, not three weeks!? What is going on!?"

"Something wrong, Soryu?" The red hair clips asked her.

"YES!" Asuka almost facepalmed mentally. "There are too many things off the original timeline now! Shinji won't be able to do it on his own! I have to go, but it would take them several weeks to finish Unit 02!"

"Then just wait. I'm sure that this Shinji will be able to pull this off, just like last time."

"Look! Damn it Cass, just help me here! Can you go and assist him?"

"No. You said it yourself, the timeline is far from the original. Lending a hand would complicate things even harder than before."

"Damn it."

"Or he can just pull the black light thingy out of his arse like before and- hey, are you listening!? Soryu, put yourself together!" The hair clips vibrated a bit to gain his host's attention, who was lost in thought after being told she had to wait until the Over The Rainbow Incident to help Shinji. "We still have a lot of things to do, so don't just sit there grieving over something like that!"

Asuka bit her thumb. It's hard for her to see Shinji suffer. But she had to endure it.

For a better future.

"Just what the hell is that."

"Misato, I think we both know what that is." The blonde woman chuckled, placing her hand on her hips while holding her tablet on another hand.

It was a purple cephalopod-like titan, with two fake eye spots on its head. The beast also has a glowing red gem planted underneath its pink 'head', which was undoubtedly the core of the Angel. The Fourth Angel, codenamed Shamshel, was floating ominously over Tokyo-3. Luckily, the Angel Alarm System has successfully done its work splendidly, as all civilians were moved to their retrospective shelters, so there was zero casualties at the moment. Misato rolled her eyes.

"Not now, Rits. We're in a serious battle against a goddamn kaiju." The purple-haired Captain angrily said, successfully trying to suppress her desire to laugh it off with her former best friend. "Where's Shinji? Have anybody called him yet? God, why didn't we think of an Angel's surprise attack at night?" She asked her underlings, who were working on the computer.

"He replied our messages. He said that he's on his way here." First Lieutenant Shigeru Aoba said, his eyes were staring at the computer's screen. "In approximately...two more seconds?" His eyes widened at the new message he received.

"What do you mean, Lieutenant Aoba-" Misato's question was cut off abruptly by a loud noise, and two children appeared on the floor. The door was the sole victim of the crash, as its metallic form was twisted in such a strange way that you would think a black hole appeared in it and sucked everything inside it. The crew was dumbfounded, staring at the duo who was attached to eachother lying on the floor.

"Ow..." Said the boy as he rubbed his head. "That was quite close. You good, Rei?" He turned into the blue-haired girl he held in his arms, who was having a look of disbelief and confusion written over her face.

"I-I'm fine. I-it appeared that we somehow transported through fabrics of reality." The albino girl said shakily, she wasn't used to such absurdity. "Is there any logical answers to this, Shinji?"

Clang! Misato's jaw dropped to the ground, as she rubbed her eyes once again. Ritsuko and the whole crew also widened her eyes in shock.

The First Child and the Third Child was embracing eachother!? And they also appeared out of the door?! And they already called eachother by their name!

"No idea." He shook his head apogetically. "Wait, we're in NERV? Oh, hello, Misato-san! We weren't late, were we?" He noticed the purple-haired woman(who was very much still in shock) and waved to her, trying to gain her attention. He flashed a innocent smile on his face.

"Wha-, how, when... ARGH!" Unable to find words to express his question, Captain Katsuragi stomped her feet on the ground. "GET IN THE DAMN ROBOT, SHINJI! AND YOU BETTER EXPLAIN THIS AFTER YOU DEFEAT THE ANGEL!"

"Roger!" Shinji gave her a thumb up while beaming his famous smile. Meanwhile, Rei finally realized she was being embraced by Shinji and blushed. The Bridge Bunnies trio laughed uncontrollably at the scene, before Misato went to them and gave everyone a proper smack on the head using her newly-appeared paper fan.

Ritsuko Akagi facepalmed. Tempted to pull out her pack of cigarettes, she complied, but reconsidered her actions.

"This is going to be a long night, isn't it?" She sighed, throwing the pack of cigarettes away. She was too tired to cope with all of this using caffeine. "Also, I should try using those strawberry-flavored caffeinated gum. Would be way better than these cheap cigerette." Her words were gone unnoticed, as her crew was already working to find a way to deal with the angelic threat.

"Just do it like last time, Shinji! Do the Super Serious Punch you did last time! The one that knocked out the Third Angel!" Misato, who recovered from her shock a few minutes before enthusiastically shouted to her mic, causing I to cover my ear to avoid a pernament ear damage.

"For the umpteenth of time, I told you it wasn't me who did it! I don't even know how I did it!" I (obviously) lied as easy as I breathed. Of course, as a matter of fact, I must gaslight her into thinking that was a miracle and not something that can happen easily. I can't let my secret be revealed like that. "But I will try to do it again, if you insisted. I don't know if I can do it or not, so don't set your hope high, Misato-san."

"Of course, Shinji!" She cheerfully said. It wasn't even a second before she swapped her tone. "Grab that Pallet Rifle over there and engage combat with the Angel."

What.

"But Misato, I don't know how to use a gun!? I never have any trainings before!"

"...Oh. Oopsie." Her tone shifted again.

What... WHAT THE HELL DO YOU MEAN 'OH'!?

"You see, Shinji... NERV is quite...y'know." said the purple-haired captain nervously. "Things have gotten very complicated these weeks, so..."

"So you forgot about giving me any tests and training to face the Angel?" I said sarcastically and sadly. "I'm going to die. I DON'T WANNA DIE!"

"You should have brought that up first!"

"Oi! It is your responsiblity, not mine! I'm just a kid!" I retorted angrily. "But what happened? I thought defeating the Angel is NERV's main goal!?"

"Classified."

"You just launched a kid without any training to a goddamn flesh robot to face a giant pink squid abomination! You know what, fine! I will kick this thing's ass, and I will send thousands of complaint to this shitty organization!" I shouted before shutting my mic off.

Okay, this's so goddamn great. If I was a normal kid, I would literally die from shock right now.

Yep, I lost all of my respect to NERV. I gave up. Gripping my butterfly controllers, I sighed.

'Sachiel, wake up. Few questions, please.' I mentally shook Sachiel's image in my head, causing him to grunt slightly.

'What is it, Uncle Shinji?' The angel turned his head(?) to face me.'Why so soon? Sachiel wants to sleep.'

'Shamshel. She is here.'

'Shamshel!?' Sachiel instantly woke up from his slumber, and his voice was panicked.'It is too early! Where is she!?'

'Use my body.' The angel nodded and disappeared, only to reapprear with a frown on his face(?). That was too soon. 'What did you see?'

'It's Shamshel's incarnation, and she is ...residing in it, Sachiel think? Sachiel don't know why she is like this.'He said, shaking his whole upper body to imitate a shrug.

'What do you mean?'

'Sachiel felt something is wrong with her. She has never been like this before. But we can try to damage the incarnation and pull her consciousness out just like how you pulled Sachiel out.'

'The old way, huh. Okay, I will try something.'

I closed the telepathy link and focused on controlling Unit 01. Closing my eyes, I attempted to go to the 01's core.

A little bit of tinkering... and done. Opening my eyes, I glanced at the Sync Ratio window. "A whopping 28% increase. And it is at 91,7%." I muttered.

Okay, let's test this new thing. Tightening my grips on the controller, I looked at Shamshel and smirked.

Unit 01 was confused.

Something was intruding inside its body. But it felt...good? And warm. And cozy...

A black substance made its way to Unit 01...and instantly covered it as if it was some kind of parasites.

"Uohhhh..." Unit 01 groaned slightly. It felt so good. Its helmet was gradually taken over by the black goo, and so was its body. But it was too absorbed in its trance...that it didn't notice it was being eaten alive by that very black parasite it considered harmless.

Unit 01's consciousness was absorbed completely. Its body disappeared gradually, and the black goo attempted to mimic its form, resulting in a black doppelganger of Unit 01 itself.

"Heh." Unit 01's new consciousness spoke, as it smirked at its victory.

Holding the Progressive Knife in its right hand, Unit 01 thrusted it to the red core of the Angel, and its body gradually expanded before turning into a massive explosion.

Surprisingly, it's fairly easy to defeat this Angel without using his powers. The target floated, but that's it. It didn't even acknowledge the purple titan as a threat. It didn't even flinch once when Shinji stabbed it with his knife.

Shinji reached to the core, using Unit 01's hand to begin his consciousness-stealing process. But he stopped midway as he realized something was wrong.

"What the..." He muttered. "Where is it? Where is she?"

There was no consciousness inside the Angel's core, which baffled Shinji. He hesitated to destroy the core, but something clicked.

*Clicks*

The core detonated, much to Shinji's surprise. He didn't think that Angel's core could detonate on its own. Unable to maintain the mental link connecting his mind and the core, Shinji was forced to raise his black barrier on, shielding Unit 01 and himself from the explosion.

A light cross was formed on the sky, indicating the threat was done for good. But he didn't laugh it off like when he vaporized Sachiel's body, instead his eyes was set on three pair of pink-lish wings appearing right before Unit 01.

They disappeared at a blink of an eye.

"Strange." Shinji said, unable to understand what was going on. "What was that, Sachiel?"

Said Angel was sitting in Shinji's mind, silently processing what in the world just happened in front of their eyes.

"Thirty seconds." Ritsuko placed her tablet on the table. "He managed to defeat the Angel under thirty seconds, without having any training beforehand. Great, now I'm optimistic."

"And I feel that my job is meaningless now." Misato Katsuragi was lying on the table, holding a beer can on her hand. She gulped it all in one go and sighed. "The Angel doesn't even do anything to stop Unit 01, it just stood there like a decoy."

"Fetishes?" The faux blonde raised one of her eyebrows.

"You are clearly in a good mood today huh, Rits." The captain shook her head. "No one has the ball to say that Angels have fetishes except you."

Turning on the water faucet, I sighed as the water slowly cleared my body from the LCL.

'Still thinking about what happened, Uncle?' Sachiel's voice reached to me, asking if I was okay.

"Yeah. I can't believe I failed." I said dejectedly.

'Do not be worried, Uncle. Shamshel is not dead yet.'

"Eh?" I lit my head up. "What do you mean Shamshel isn't dead yet? I reached to her core and nothing was there. She was killed by someone that has similar ability to me! Right?"

'No. If Sachiel's speculation is correct, Shamshel initated a forced evolution. A forbidden ritual that was forgotten long ago, exclusive to us Adam's children only. How she managed to recreate the ritual from scratch is beyond Sachiel.'

"Forced evolution?"

'Once The Father's Children managed to find and absorb a clean Orb of Fulfillment that is created from Bane Of Adam, The Spear Of Longinus, they will enter their evolution, becoming a much more powerful being, Seraphims. Their appearances vary from hideous to outright logic-defying. But they all have three pairs of wings in common. They are very strong, Uncle. Nearly invincible, next to Father only.'

"Now that's scary. So you are saying that Shamshel has evolved to something that monstrous?"

'I can't tell you the whole detail because my memories are still hazy, but yes. Shamshel is one of the world's strongest creatures right now.'

"But I destroyed her body, right? How is she going to exist now?"

'Seraphims don't need their Angel bodies once they evolved. Just like gods in Lilims' tales, abandoning their mortal bodies to ascend to godhood.'

Okay, that was a lot to take in. A lot.

"So, how am I going to contain her now? I can still take her consciousness out, right? But she doesn't have the core anymore, so how am I going to maintain the link?"

'I don't know, Uncle. I don't know.'

I sighed. This whole Angel-kidnapping business might not go as smoothly as I'd hoped.

"So, Misato-san. Before you and I have a long conversation about stuffs, I would want to do this first."

Misato looked at the signed paper Shinji placed on her desk.

"You want Rei to move to somewhere else?"

"Yes." The boy sat down on the chair and looked at her eyes.

"Reasons?"

"Her house is something straight out a horror movie, Misato. A horror movie. So I would like her to stay with you for a short time until I have a word with my Father. Please?"

She sighed. "You do know I can't do that, right? Rei has to stay at where she is until further notice. As a Captain myself, I don't have any authority over forcing a Pilot to stay with me."

"Except that I can sue NERV for being irresponsible with their pilot's health condition."

She massaged her temple. "Look, Shinji. I can't, okay?"

"One night." Shinji pleaded. "Just one night. I will even go to your house and clean it up just for one night for Rei to stay at your house. I will definitely be scolded, but whatever. I will cook too, to make up for the last time. So, please?"

Shinji held his head up and looked at her with those adorable puppy eyes. "Fine, you know what?" She sighed mentally. "One night wouldn't hurt."

"Yay! Thank you Misato-san!" Shinji stood up immidiately and ran out of her office. Looking at her child soldier's back, she realized she just missed a rare opportunity to tease Shinji.

"Welp. I guess this day wasn't so bad after all." She smiled at the thoughts of the Third Child wearing her pink apron and cooking the food, waiting for her to come home and eat. Oh, and the mysterious First Child will join them too.

At least today, she had something to look forward to. A nice meal would suffice.

"Huh. That was easy."

"See? Told you."

"No, I mean it was too easy!" The redhead snapped. "The Angel didn't even bulge once! It just stood there like a dummy!"

"But the boy wasn't hurt, right?" The pair of hair clips vibrated again. "It is what you wanted to happen, right? An easy kill."

"No. I mean, yes? Agh!" She kicked the chair, her anger didn't leave her head. "I don't know anymore. This seemed too easy... that I think something terrible is going to happen." She muttered.

"Relax, Soryu. You got all the tools. You are accompanied by the most powerful weapon ever existed in the world."

"But I can't even do anything beside waiting until it's the time for me to intervene."

"So what? We came here prepared. Nothing would be impossible to achieve."

"...You're right." The red hair clips vibrated proudly. Asuka stood up. "I didn't overcome all of that for nothing."

"See, that's what I'm talking about. If anything went wrong, we can fix it easily."

"Yeah." She grunted a bit, trying to calm herself down. "We still have works to do. Bonds to rekindle, people to help. Let's go, Cass."

"On it, partner." Suddenly, the red hair clips went silent, but the redhead didn't notice it.

After all, she's Asuka Langley Soryu. A elite among elites, a pilot who has already gotten two college degrees at the age of fourteen, and someone pilots a titanic robot to protect the world. She will not fail again. As she held her hand forward, trying to grab the future in front of her(metaphorically), the door opened.

"Yo, Princess."

Asuka almost yelped in surprise. A girl who has brunette hair tied into twin-tails with bangs parted to the sides walked in the room, her hands were placed on her hips. She didn't recognize the girl at all, but there was something oddly familiar about her. "Who are you?"

The girl chuckled faintly. "The name is Mari, Mari Makinami. Also known as the Fourth Child. Nice to meet cha, Princess. I just got tranferred here, so in the mean time, wanna be friends?"

"What."

"I will take that as a yes." As Asuka was lost in confusion, Mari smirked wryly. This confused the redhead even more than before.

It turned out something was already too wrong in this timeline, and Asuka simply wasn't prepared to react to this sudden shift in tempo. But she wasn't the only one who was confused.

A pair of red hair clips shivered.
