chapter 7: School Time.
A/N: Something never changes, even if it is another world or not. And a jump to the sky-
It was 9PM in the evening. I stopped looking at my phone and stared at the building I'm standing in front of.
So, I'm here again. At Misato-san's apartment, hooray? I turned back and gave a thumb up to Tadama-san, who drove us here. Nodding satisfactorily, he left the scene, leaving both me and Rei standing before the closed apartment.
It's lucky that I asked for the key before getting here. Holding the key in my hand, I opened the door and turned the light on. Following my steps, Rei sheepishly walked behind me to enter the room.
And a tower of beer gently 'touched' my face. A lot of Yebisu beer cans. And they reek of alcohol.
...
I pinched my cheek. It actually hurt.
You can't be serious. There is no way that she actually managed to revert the whole apartment to its depressing state. What the hell happened here?!
"It stinks." The albino girl pinched her nose, a look of disgust appeared on her face, which was quite surprising for me to see(she was still a bit stoic most of the time). Even Rei wasn't used to such horrifying smell, and the fact that she lived in a literal abandoned building made the statement hit even heavier.
Yep. Two days and it reverted into its former state, even though I've cleaned it excellently. Guess three weeks are long enough to recreate a haunting house's scene. Oh, and there are TWO towers of beer cans. Why are they even taller than before?!
"I completely agree with you, Rei. I will clean this place in no time, you can wait there." I exhaustedly pointed at the least tainted object in the room, the mysterious blue couch that kept disappearing and reappearing every time I got here. At least it doesn't have any beer smell on it.
"I see." Acknowledging her inability to do housework(she could, but it's not as good as mine), she quietly sat down on the couch. A second later and she passed out due to her fatigue. She had a rough day, I could tell that much.
Oh well, better finish cleaning this mess first and start making dinner. Throwing the dirted mop to the bathroom(which was literally painted black because of the stains on the floor), I mentally made a note to myself to clean the thing later. Opening the fridge to find something to cook, I found a penguin who was trying to sleep peacefully.
"Oh, hey Pen-Pen. Can you pass me the sardine?" The penguin grumpily threw the box to me. "Thanks. Dinner will be ready soon. You can join us later if you want." I slowly closed the fridge, trying not to displease him. The penguin grunted and went back to his slumber.
Wait a minute, what happened to his little fridge? I looked down and...yeah. Someone threw up at the mini fridge's cable. I see. Misato-san definitely exceeded my expectations, but not in a good way.
Anyways, enough with that. Shrugging the thoughts off, I placed the grocery bag I bought before on the table and began to cook. The smell of fresh food slowly being cooked overrode the disgusting smell of stale beer, and the apartment seemed to bright up all of a sudden. I hummed quietly as I flipped the pan in my hand and catched the scrambled egg in the air. It was a show-off-ish kitchen trick I learned when I was watching my aunt cooking. She often failed miserably and we all laughed about it, I smiled at the faint memory. Good times.
"Mmm...delicious." Rei murmured in her sleep. Was that sleep-talking?! She noticed the smell! One point for Shinji!
Well, atleast someone noticed my master cooking skill! Ah ha ha ha! I haven't had much of a chance to cook for others before, so I'm a bit excited. I wonder if my food will fit their taste? As I continued to cook, my mind began to think about many things.
I would definitely want to know more about the Seraphim stuff, but sadly I need to take a break, according to Sachiel. "You shouldn't be that paranoid, Uncle. Sachiel is sure that everything will go just fine! Relax!" He said. "Sachiel will try to create something to assist us in the future, so you can take a break!"
Relax my ass. In this state, I can't even project a barrier bigger than my palm. Imagine a surprise attack right in the city, and the opponent wasn't a gigantic Angel, I will probably be doomed. At best I can only shoot the thing like bullets, and that's it. I shuddered at the thoughts of being killed right in my house. There is a high chance that this Seraphim can do the Skinwalker trick, like stealing someone's body and using it to approach me. Spooky.
I'm really at a disadvantage here, huh. I don't even know how to fight this thing. Not that I know how to fight in the first place anyways, as I just did some of the stunts that I saw in the movie and prayed for it to succeed. Hell, without this black light manipulation stuff, I am a regular schoolboy without zero gimmick. What a shame.
Ding! Looks like the ricecooker has finally finished its job. Preparing the meal, I placed plates of food on the table, one by one. Before I knew it, the plates of food had taken up most of the space on the table. Huh, I guess I got carried away a little bit. I'll keep some food for Misato-san in the kitchen in case she comes home late.
Smiling briefly, I walked to the couch and woke the blue-haired albino sleeping beauty up. We had a nice dinner that day. Not much talking though, since Rei was completely focused on devouring the food relentlessly like a hungry beast, and her face seemed content? My pride got slightly worked up, so we cooked some more before heading to our(self-claimed) beds and call it a day.
"G'night, Rei."
"Good night, Shinji."
They both nodded and turned off the light. Yawning, Shinji closed the door, leaving the teenager alone and collapsed on the mysterious blue couch.
Of course, as Shinji was a person with common sense, he realized that two teenagers sleeping together in a room would probably cause some commotion in the middle of the night(especially when someone saw him sleeping with a girl), so he quickly took the opportunity to lounge on the couch. After all, it was Rei who needed it more than him. The poor girl lived in a literal abandoned building(not really abandoned because he could see the Section 2 agents hiding in the bushes all the time), to the point that she passed out instantly on the bed due to its comfortable bed sheets. It's saddening in some ways.
As Shinji slowly closed his eyes to drift into his sleep, the apartment has finally been submerged in silence once again. The eternal screaming of cicadas has died long before the moonlight reached the apartment, and the reign of silence began to rise once more. And silence. Silence again. And a jump to the sky-
...Several minutes have passed. A certain girl wasn't sleeping at all.
The sound of the door being opened echoed in the apartment. Under the moonlight, Rei Ayanami was sneakily tiptoeing her feet, trying her best not to cause any noise at all. Her blue hair began to reflect the moonlight for some reason. She slowly made her way to the sleeping Third Child, who was in his slumber, dreaming about doing laundry and taxes. She carefully caressed his cheek with her pale hands, her crimson orbs of eyes were glued to his face. She leaned in, her face was only several centimeters away from his. Her breaths were heavy, yet her prey was still too engrossed in his slumber to notice.
A moment of silence. She held his hand gently, her fingers interwined with his. Closing the distance between their faces, the bluenette closed her eyes.
...They kissed. No, it's more like Rei tried to kiss him on the cheek, but failed on purpose and landed the kiss on his soft lips instead. After a second to realize what she just did, the blue-haired girl paled and blushed furiously at the same time before rushing back to her room. Shinji was still asleep like a log, completely not realizing that he had just lost his first kiss with a girl he met a few hours ago.
Rei Ayanami has troubles to sleep that night. Momentarily forgetting her ultimate mission, she giggled happily before falling asleep. She didn't know what prompted her to do it, but she didn't care anyways.
This sensation...she will treasure it.
The next time she woke up, she had no recollection of what had happened last night. Still, she was happy for some reason?
[(Not) A Commercial Break!]
"I sense a disturbance in the Force."
"Aren't you supposed to sneeze instead of referencing Star Wars? Hey, Soryu, stop trying to Force-choking me. I don't have a lung-"
[Commercial Break End!]
*Time: 2AM*
Misato Katsuragi was many things.
A captain of NERV, who works at the frontline of the Angel War? Check. A responsible adult? Check. A vengeful person? Maybe. A totally hot woman? Definitely check. Yada yada, and many more.
However, contrary to many beliefs, she is, ultimately, a slob at home. And she cooks terribly. And she dresses loosely at home. And many more bad things that we can't list here. Evidence, you say? Well, for starters, we can open the door of her apartment and see it for ourselves.
As the purple-haired woman opened the door, she was surprised to see that she had the wrong key to her apartment. Taking a close look of the apartment, she nodded. "Yes. I must have picked the wrong key. Silly me." She chuckled exhaustedly, still worn out from the amount of the paperwork she did that day. She must be dreaming in her office right now.
This was a totally different apartment. The tower of beer cans wasn't here, which made her quite irritated - she worked very hard to build it from stratch since someone tried to clean it and ran away after bonking her faux-blonde friend-
Wait a minute. That would mean... She facepalmed. How could she forget! Shinji and the First Child, Rei Ayanami was going to stay here tonight! Technically it's already morning now, but whatever, she thought.
"There must be food here." She mumbled while opening the larger fridge. "Miso soup, scrambled eggs, cooked sardines and...pancakes? Pen-Pen?" She raised an eyebrow at the peculiar foreign food appeared in her fridge. And some desserts? Good, atleast she has something to eat tonight. She was afraid that Shinji forgot to leave some food for her, but it seemed like the kids were quite generous to leave a grand dinner for her. Looks like no instant food for today.
She didn't notice the penguin who was glaring daggers at her and simply closed the fridge.
Happily enjoying her (temporary) wards' leftovers from dinner, Misato Katsuragi momentarily forgot about her terrible day. It was delicious, second to her cooking only, the purple-haired captain smugged. She should come over his house for food sometimes, as she didn't have much time to cook proper meals. Placing a piece of cooked sardines in her mouth, she slowly enjoyed the fish's flavor melting in her mouth.
The food, it reminded her of her mother. It reminded her about the past. When her mom was still alive, her father who wasn't so indulged in his work back then. When the world was still so peaceful.
...When Second Impact hasn't happened.
She wasn't innocent at all, and she knew that. She was selfish. You can even call it reckless. The reason she joined NERV was only one. Revenge.
For her father. For billions of life that were taken that day.
To complete such a noble goal, she must... risk a bunch of kids in danger. Dismissing the thoughts, she kept on eating. They say that there is no point in living in the past, anyways.
Eventually, the hunger had subsided, and sleepiness has taken full control of her mind. Wearily to her feet, she began to move, leaving dirty dishes in the sink before entering the room. The woman dropped her red jacket to the floor and fell onto the bed like a log. Her snores were already echoing the room, and the apartment returned to its (mostly) silent state.
It was a peaceful night of the Katsuragi household.
"So, Toji. Did you hear the news? We're about to get a new transfer student!" Kensuke enthuastically said, causing the jock to turn back and face him.
" 'dat again, huh? Yeah, I heard it, so stop smiling like a dork, man." Toji sighed. "Also, why didn't you talk about the Angel from yesterday? I thought it was your thing?"
"Eh, boring." Toji blinked his eyes in surprise before grabbing the nerd in glasses to shake him aggressively.
"Who are you, skinwalker?! What did you do to my friend?!"
"Er, it's still me. It's just that the battle was boring, you know. Since there was zero damage on the city and we were trapped in the shelter, I didn't even know what was going on." The nerd adjusted his glasses. "I guess this whole NERV stuff isn't really that interesting to me anymore. Like, we are literally fighting against monstrous kaijus! Then bam! No real harm was caused, and we didn't even lose a leg or two! NERV is too competent that it's boring now."
"Yeah. Props to whoever pilots that purple robot, I guess." Toji held his chin, curiously thinking about the robot. "I wonder... what if this new student was that pilot?"
Kensuke stood up and slammed his hand on Toji's desk. "You're goddamn right! Imagine having a pilot as your friend! Man, I can't wait to meet the guy in person!"
"Just a possibility, Ken." The jock simply shrugged. "For all we know, the pilot could be a old man. Hell, they could even be a super pretty girl! He he he..."
"Man, stop talking creepily like that." Sitting down, Aida crossed his arms. "You always pick the weirdest way to talk about something. You seriously said that while Class Rep was standing behind you?"
The jock yelped in surprise and turned his head behind. There was no one there, and Toji knew that the nerd had successfully pranked him, as his laughter was barely contained underneath his hands. "Har har, very funny, Ken. REVENGEEEEE!"The jock put his hand forward and started tickling Kensuke, who quickly gave up and stared laughing hysterically.
"Ow, ow! Stop, ha ha! Stop tickling me!"
"They are making a scene again." The class rep who was previously mentioned by the nerd, a.k.a Hikari Horaki sighed. At least this won't last long, it was minutes away from the teacher's arrival anyways. She just has to endure this for a little longer.
Any second now.
...
And a jump to the-
"Alright, class's in session now." An elder man walked in the class and placed his case on the table. Hikari sighed in relief. She was about to snap, but luckily, the old teacher finally showed up in the nick of time. The two Stooges stopped their quarreling and returned to their seats.
"So, before we get started, I would like to introduce our new student." He looked at the boy who was standing outside the door. "Come in now, Mr. Ikari."
The door was opened, and the two Stooges were widening their eyes out in surprise. The mysterious boy walked in with a super dazzling smile on his face!?
""Shinji!?"" The two Stooges thought at the same time, both looking at the boy in question holding a backpack in his hand.
"Yo everyone! My name is Shinji Ikari! It's a pleasure to meet you all!"
"Mr Ikari, enough with the self-introduction. You may take that seat over there." The old teacher pointed at the seat behind Toji, and I nodded.
Holding the backpack in my hand, I walked to my seat and sat down. There is a laptop on the table for some reason. I guess this's my device now?
Oh, it's Toji and Kensuke who were sitting in front of me! I sneakily tapped a finger on the jock's shoulder, and he turned back so quick it left afterimages.
"Dude, it's you!? Nice to see ya again!" Toji said, offering his hand. Decided to be polite, I shook it and we both smiled. Kensuke(aka the nerd) also shook my hand as well.
"Yeah! We never thought the transfer student would be you!" Kensuke exclaimed. "Hey, after school, wanna hit the arcade together? The three of us?"
"Sure!" I nodded.
To be honest, I was pretty surprised too. But it's great that I have someone to talk with in the first day I go to school.
"Ahem, Mr. Ikari?" The teacher faked his coughings. "I'm very happy that you made some friends, but it's time for History class. Open your laptops, children." He clapped his hands, and everyone started to load their computer.
But, as soon as the old teacher started lecturing, he immidiately went on a journey back to time, when Second Impact hasn't happened yet, when the world was very enjoyable, and there was four seasons instead of only this eternal summer, blah blah, et cetera et cetera. Okay, I got it. Second Impact bad, time was good before. Now, where is the actual History lesson?!
I looked around, trying to find a clue what was going on. As if this were their normal school day, the students didn't do anything to stop the teacher from reminiscing about the past. Instead, they were focused on their laptops. Some were playing games, another was busily chatting with their friends. The freckled girl was the only one who was trying to focus on her study. Toji has already begun his slumber on the desk, while Kensuke was scrolling on a military website?
Huh, I never have guessed going to school would be like this. What should I do now? Hmm...
I rubbed my chin.
Maybe sleeping? Nah, I'm too awake for that.
Games? Not really that interesting.
I guess the only thing I can do to pass the time now is looking at the window. Oh well, let's give it a try.
As I turned my eyes to the window, I noticed a bluenette who was also staring at the sky. Oh, it's actually Rei! I was about to call her name, but then I realized shouting would probably cause some unnecessary commotion, so I'm just going to stare at the window. I will leave her alone for now.
Hmm, I narrowed my eyes to avoid direct sunlight. Blue sky, nice clouds. Green grass, fresh air, perfect weather for a stroll. And there's a lot of trees over there, too. Some kids were playing football at the schoolyard, and some of the older students were chatting busily about their life. Wow, and I almost thought this was boring. Turns out this was pretty interesting too!
I simply continued to stare out the window, watching the lives of people around me unfold. It is a nice Monday, isn't it?
Oh, here comes a weird woman! I narrowed my eyes once again to identify the woman. She had bright red hair and blue eyes, and she was wearing a yellow sundress. It seemed pretty out of place too. Maybe she's a cosplayer?
Anyways, she seemed to be a pretty cool gal. As I continued to look at the woman, she looked around, trying to find something, I think? She shook her head frantically.
Is she having a seizure or something? I'm starting to feel bad for her. Poor her, must have forgotten about her phone. As I was about to stop looking at the woman, her eyes immidiately looked at me. She smiled.
I froze instantly, unable to shift my attention to something else. Her blue eyes were hollow as if there were two black holes in her eyes, sucking my intent to escape, and her mouth was smiling sinisterly. Spreading her wings, she took off and disappeared in the sky.
Wait. Wings?
Holy shit.
