Lena thought back to the first time she and Supergirl met. It was an assassination attempt, her helicopter targeted by drones. Both of the Supers had come to her aid that day, although they hadn't had much time to exchange words. The second time was much like the first, only this time, the assassination attempt took place at a press conference.
Are we always destined to meet like this? The Luthor wondered as she gunned down one of the men holding an officer, whom she would later know as Alex Danvers, Supergirl's sister, at gunpoint. As soon as the man collapsed, Lena realized that Supergirl was right there, too.
But the third time was a charm, it seemed. For once, the two were actually able to hold a proper conversation. Lena was planning on throwing a party and she wanted Supergirl to be there. The Kryptonian had come flying across the starlit sky, landing on her balcony.
I wonder if Superman ever did this with Lois Lane? Lena wondered as the Girl of Steel touched down at her office. Wait, why am I thinking like THAT? She felt a blush slowly spreading across her cheeks and she could only hope that Supergirl wouldn't notice it.
Oh, who was she kidding? Of course Supergirl would notice! Everyone knew she had super vision, and very acute senses! Lena was barely able to contain her inner fangirl, finally getting to meet the legendary Girl of Steel properly, and in her private office to boot! But as their talk carried on, Lena could sense a tiny bit of distrust coming from the other woman. She wasn't surprised, but it stung her more than she thought it would. It became easier to control her fangirling after that, and her face became guarded. She tried to appear rough on the surface: cold, calculating, and calm.
But after Supergirl flew away again, having accepted Lena's invitation, the Luthor couldn't help but give a giddy smile. No matter how tough and aloof Lena thought she could be, Supergirl saw right through her. Was it the X-ray vision? If anything, Lena felt more like it was the laser vision, cutting right through her. And if it was an open/shut case, she never would've known from the icy look on Supergirl's face; but as much as Supergirl's distance might've bothered the Luthor, she was still completely lost in those gorgeous, sapphire eyes…
The party was a success! It didn't go off without a hitch (read: yet another assassination attempt), but at least it ended well! And it was all thanks to Supergirl…
"Who would've believed it, a Luthor and a Super, working together?" This time, Lena really couldn't control her giddy smile as she gestured to the space between herself and the Girl of Steel. This time, Supergirl was smiling back, and Lena was even more lost in her eyes than that very first night. They exchanged a few more kind words, but for better or worse, by the end of it, Lena wouldn't remember much.
The more that you say, the less I know. Wherever you stray, I'd follow! I'm begging for you to take my hand…Join my plans, if you can…
Although she didn't have the courage to say it, Lena felt certain that she could impress Supergirl and win her over. You know that my plans could lead you home. She would show Supergirl that she could be a good Luthor, and that anywhere else except by her side was hollow. But first, she needed Supergirl to take her hand. She needed to do something to get, and keep, Supergirl's attention…
ooo
And although Lena wouldn't know it just yet, given enough time, Supergirl would start to feel the exact same way about her. Even though Kara was a reporter at CatCo, she started spending more and more time at L-Corp. And at the DEO, sometimes they'd give her a hard time about her growing infatuation with the Luthor as well; but that was how Kara knew her love was true. Even though the world would count Lena out time and time again, Kara would never fail to defend her honor, whether as Kara or Supergirl. She may have been an invulnerable Kryptonian, the mighty Girl of Steel, but Kara was always willing to bend to Lena's whim. After long enough, it paid off. Kara no longer only visited Lena at work.
One night, she was waiting at Lena's place for Lena to get off work. Ever since they started dating, Lena had given Kara a spare set of keys to her home. Sometimes, Kara would intentionally arrive early to surprise Lena, since she always worked long hours. Tonight, though, the hours went longer than normal, and Kara accidentally fell asleep before Lena could get home. Luckily, though, her super senses woke her up just in time.
Head on the pillow, I can feel you sneaking in…
Kara rolled over and threw a sleepy arm around Lena. "Welcome home," she mumbled.
"Sorry, Kara, did I wake you?" Lena whispered as she crawled under the covers with her lover.
"Nah, don't worry about it," Kara reassured her. "I'm just glad you're back. I hope work wasn't too hard on you?"
"Luckily, no, it was just that the meetings were long," Lena replied, wrapping an arm back around Kara.
"No fair," Kara whined. "Those constituents of yours are cutting into my time with you!" she gave Lena an adorable pout and Lena laughed.
"We have all night together," she reminded the reporter, kissing her playfully, and that brightened Kara up considerably.
Once again, she might've been the Girl of Steel, but as far as Kara was concerned, Lena was the mythical one. She was the ridiculously smart, ridiculously talented, ridiculously driven woman who singlehandedly rebranded an entire empire and changed it into a force for good rather than evil. Kara may have been everyone's symbol of hope, but Lena was hers.
And, Kara thought to herself, amused, I may be the "virtuous" one as the honorable, noble Supergirl, but there was one prize I'd cheat to win…Although it was a secret she never told anybody else, not even those closest to her, she may or may not have used her superpowers to woo and save Lena more than once, sometimes while as Supergirl and sometimes while as Kara Danvers. Maybe that gave her an unfair advantage over any other potential suitors that Lena had, but for once, Kara didn't care.
She was confident that she was the only one who could make Lena feel like she belonged. You know that my strength could fly you home…And Kara felt the same way. She belonged with Lena. Anywhere else was hollow. She was also the only one to listen to Lena ramble about science and nerdy stuff for hours on end, no matter how confusing it got. And she was the only one who would've followed and defended Lena anywhere, always looking forward to working with her. And it wasn't anyone else who wished that Lena would take her hand and break her plans. Mon-el who? Jack Spheer who? Kara snuggled Lena closer, a proud smile on her face. Don't need no man!
ooo
Even when their relationship hit rough waters, the two hadn't stayed mad at one another for too very long. They were still bending towards one another even when everything else was trying to push them apart. The world may have counted both of them out, whether as a couple or as individuals, (and sometimes, they counted each other out, in the midst of some of their worst fights), but it seemed as if this Super-Luthor dynamic duo was just too good to keep down forever. Instead, they came back stronger than a Super trend.
And late one night, after they hugged and made up, after Alex and Kelly had their wedding, the entire band of Superfriends had a bonfire in one of the parks farther away from the city. They all met up after dark, Kara and Lena going as lovers again for the first time in far too long.
As they sat side by side, basking in the fire's glow, Kara turned to Lena and whispered, "Show me the places where the others gave you scars."
And Lena obliged, finally letting out everything she tried to repress for so very long. Even though she was still trying to recover from Kara's lie, she couldn't deny that she still loved other woman more than words could say. Once she finally got to say everything she wanted to, it was an open/shut case. It always had been, she should've known from the look on Kara's face, both tonight and from the very first night they ever spoke.
"Actually, there is one more thing," Lena said. "All the tricks you pulled to keep your secret, all the smoke and mirrors? All the ways you managed to dupe me, sometimes even making it seem like you and Supergirl were in the same vicinity? Well…every bait-and-switch was a work of art." They shared a laugh. That was a good sign! It was good that they could talk about Kara's deceit without it bringing up hard feelings anymore.
"Were they really, though?" Alex teased, she and Kelly not too far away from Kara and Lena. "Her covers were…clumsy. At best."
"Oh shut up," Kara rolled her eyes and pretended to look at Alex in annoyance.
"I'm just saying, you definitely should've been caught more often than—" Alex was interrupted by a marshmallow suddenly smacking her in the face. "Ouch!" she complained. "Ease up on the super strength!" But Kelly, Lena, and Kara were laughing. Alex rolled her eyes. Oh well, at least she had a marshmallow now. But just as she raised it to her mouth, suddenly, it was gone. Stupid super speed!
"Kara!" the elder Danvers chided the younger again. Kara gave her a cheeky smile as she ate the marshmallow slowly, tauntingly.
"That's for the Cheetos you stole from me that one time!" she cried triumphantly, mouth full.
"We were 15!" Alex cried in exasperation.
"Never forget the Cheetos!" Kara cried in reply, placing a hand over her heart as she finished off the marshmallow. Alex rolled her eyes again.
"Don't worry, babe, I got you covered," Kelly said, drawing Alex's attention back to her. There was a marshmallow in her hand.
"Aww, thanks," Alex grinned shyly, reaching for the marshmallow, but Kelly wasn't aiming for Alex's hand. She playfully fed her new wife the marshmallow and while Alex looked even more flustered, the others all clapped and cheered, hooting and hollering for the happy couple.
"That'll be us someday," Kara promised, leaning over to Lena and whispering her ear. Now it was Lena's turn to look incredibly flustered. Before she could say anything, though, Alex suddenly rose to her feet, extending a hand to Kelly, but addressing all of the Superfriends.
"Let's dance!" she cried, and the others were quick to their feet as well. Music filled the air as they spun around the dancing flames.
The more that you say, the less I know. Wherever you stray, I follow! You know that our love will guide us home, anywhere else is hollow! I'm begging for you to take my hand, wreck my plans, now let's dance! I hope you can, that's the plan, come on and dance.
They danced together all through the night, singing and laughing, switching partners, everyone joining in on the fun. Kara was sure she'd danced with every Superfriend by the time the night was over, but of course, her favorite partner was the first and last. The flames shining gold on her hair and reflecting brightly off her smile, she reached out to the Luthor.
I'm begging for you to take my hand…
Lena did, but not to dance. Instead, she pulled Kara in close.
Wreck my plans…
And kissed her as hard as she could.
I know you can…
Kara was more than happy to reciprocate.
