"Up already, eh, Daisuke?" Levi teased. "What are you, a morning glory?" Even on the phone, Daisuke could hear Levi's playful smirk.
"I could say the same about you, couldn't I?" he replied, grinning. "After all, I think it was your idea that we had this call."
"Haha, all right, guilty as charged," Levi shook his head, deciding to keep the fact that he actually hadn't gone to sleep at all a secret. He just got lost in the new WorldXross update and, before he knew it, it was morning. But because he knew his prim, proper, overly caring boyfriend wouldn't much like to hear that, he simply refrained from saying anything at all.
But of course, even though Levi may not have said anything, Daisuke still had his suspicions, knowing that his boyfriend had a pension for being a night owl, and how it often overlapped with his passionate love of video games. Even if there hadn't been a new update, Daisuke wouldn't have been surprised to hear that Levi stayed up all night playing video games anyway. If Daisuke was a morning glory, Levi was a moonflower.
"Ah, well then, Mr. Emerson, is that your confession?" Daisuke asked, voice suddenly becoming stern and low.
"Oh, are you going to finally send me to jail, Detective Hiirano?" Levi asked, affecting a helpless yet seductive tone. "Bring your best set of cuffs!"
Then he and Daisuke both burst out laughing. These were the kind of jokes that Levi would've been too shy to say, and Daisuke would've been too embarrassed to hear, just a few months ago, but something just clicked between the two of them and, before they knew it, they were dating. Now, all either man could think was how the other's laugh was the best sound he ever heard.
Levi still wasn't sure which of them had actually initiated the relationship, but what he did remember was how, early on, Daisuke had waited outside Levi's place in his best suit and tie, carrying a bouquet of hand grown flowers. Literally hand grown. He'd used his ability to summon up some of the loveliest, most fitting flowers he could think of, and Levi thought it was the sappiest and most romantic gesture he'd ever seen. His own romantic gesture was a bit sillier, but Daisuke seemed to appreciate it just the same. He gave them both pet names: Daisu-gay and Le-bi.
Ever since that day, Levi would indulge Daisuke's inner farmer/gardener and listen to him ramble about plants and farming before they'd switch off and it would be Levi's turn to ramble on about video games and computer-nerd stuff. Now they were sharing breakfast together and, as per usual, each one was indulging the other's favorite hobbies.
"-harvest is good this year, from what Pops told me," Daisuke was in the middle of saying. "Although there hasn't been as much rain as he hoped, but he's got this new fertilizer that hydrates the crops because it has a certain chemical structure that-"
Somewhere along the way, Levi lost focus, watching Daisuke talk, hearing the words, but all he could think was, "I'm glad we're together."
At one point, Daisuke laughed, and even though Levi wasn't focusing on what Daisuke was laughing about, just seeing him smile made Levi smile.
And every time you shine, I'd shine for you, Levi thought with a dreamy smile as Daisuke's face seemed to grow brighter and brighter the more he talked about his precious plants. Levi was sure that if it was possible, Daisuke would've lived in a greenhouse.
When it was Levi's turn to ramble about live streams and let's plays, it was Daisuke's turn to get lost in the other man's voice. Levi talked about the latest WorldXross update (once again leaving out the fact that he'd stayed up all night playing it).
"My team and I got an achievement unlocked for completing one of the new quest-lines under a certain time limit, which gave us-"
I like the way your hair falls in your face when you talk so animatedly. You got the keys to me, and romance was the achievement you unlocked. (Status update: boyfriend material). I love the stubble on your face…Daisuke didn't used to be one for video games, or even technology (beyond farming equipment), but after Levi, he'd never been so wrapped up in it. Honey, I like the way you're everything I ever wanted.
He had plenty of time to mull it over, and finally, he decided that Levi was exactly the kind of guy he was looking for.
Now all I can say, "is come closer!" He leaned forward, closer to Levi, as Levi described a rather intense, epic boss battle from last night. When he flashed Daisuke a proud and excited smile, Daisuke smiled back. And when you shine, I'll shine for you!
But eventually, breakfast had to end. They were on the clock in 15 minutes. As they entered their massive office building, the Prism agency, even though they both headed to the detective department, they eventually parted ways. Levi was off to the computer labs while Daisuke was going to work on another case their department recently acquired.
"See you after work, Levi!" Daisuke said cheerfully, giving Levi a quick kiss on the cheek.
"Later, lover," Levi grinned. Daisuke gave him a quiet laugh before turning down the hall to his office. For a moment, Levi watched him go.
Tall, strong, and Superman, he puts papers in his briefcase and heads away to save the world or go to work, it's the same thing to me…
Daisuke may have been a farm boy, but he eventually moved to the city and, after discovering a dead body buried beneath his new house, became obsessed with solving crime, finding truth, and delivering justice. He had his mother's eyes and his father's ambition. Even if that ambition led them down different paths, Daisuke was determined and clever.
I wonder if he knows how much that I'll miss him? Levi thought to himself. Because Daisuke was a caseworker, he was more likely to actually go out and about in his investigation while Levi, as the "IT Guy", was more likely to just stay cooped up in his office all day. That was fine with him, but sometimes he did miss Daisuke during the day, especially if business was so, well, busy, that they weren't able to see, or even speak to, one another until after work. And sometimes, in their line of work, "after work" meant well into the night. Maybe they'd let Levi be with Daisuke out in the field someday. Even if it wasn't likely, a man could still dream, couldn't he?
But it's ok either way, I know you've got a busy day today, Levi smiled. Go save the world, I'll be around when you come back down.
But even though Levi may have questioned his own "saving abilities" (as he would say, the only world he knew how to save was the one in WorldXross every time he updated his save file), Daisuke still held him in high regard. Especially in their modern age, tech was more important now than ever, which meant Levi had a very unique and useful role at Prism.
Tall, dark, and beautiful. He's complicated, he's irrational, but I hope someday he'll show me the way he saves the day! Something in his deep brown eyes has me saying, "He's not all bad like his reputation!" and I can't hear one single word they say.
Back when Daisuke and Levi were still new to one another, Daisuke remembered knowing Levi as the crazy gamer guy who sometimes was loud and irrational, especially in high-tense moments in his gaming. Sometimes that "gamer rage" bled out into his casework, if they were close to cracking something on the computers but still not quite there yet. Because of his severe love of video games, and his occasional impassioned outburst in regard to them, he had something of a "bad boy" reputation among the rest of the department.
His dark hair, which sometimes fell into his eyes, and his love of black leather jackets also contributed. But Daisuke could tell from Levi, even early on, that although his gaming addiction sometimes made him a bit difficult to interact with, he was still a good person at heart. Why else would he be working at a detective unit? One of their earliest interactions happened in one of the agency's copy machine rooms.
"Oh, freaking great!" Levi growled as his pen slipped out of his hand and, of course, rolled beneath the copy machine. I can hold and use a plethora of game controllers with unmatched ease and dexterity, yet I apparently can't even hold a pen right!
Because he was scowling, he looked even more ferocious and dark. Then in walked Daisuke.
"Something the matter, Mr…?"
"Levi. And no, it's fine, I just was an idiot and dropped my pen behind the copy machine," he sighed, some of the anger fading away from his face.
"Oh, well, accidentally dropping a pen doesn't make you an idiot, Mr. Levi," Daisuke said kindly, making his way over to the copy machine.
"Well, I know that, I just mean-" Levi felt flustered by this strange gentleman, but the words died in his throat when he watched Daisuke casually moved the entire copy machine with just one hand to allow Levi access to his lost pen. Woah…Muscle man…
As Daisuke's shy rambling would eventually tell him, it was from all the tractors and heavy farm equipment back home. Woah…Superman…
But it wasn't all midmorning breakfasts and copy room-meetups. They were detectives, after all, and sometimes the work could get hard, physically and emotionally. After all, Daisuke's first case wasn't exactly a cheerful one either, finding a dead body under his house. In one particular case, none of the detectives could find any leads, be it physical evidence, testimony, or computer data/security cam footage. The most horrible and frustrating part was that even though the crime they were currently working on was a robbery, they knew that the one who did it was also guilty of several murders, but they were so elusive that even though their crimes were widely known, their identity remained hidden.
For Levi, the hardest thing was finding out that the one set of data they thought would at least give them a small lead turned out to be entirely fake for the sole purpose of throwing them further off the trail. The bottom's going to drop out from under our feet…
For Daisuke, the hardest thing was talking to the families of previous victims for clues. And people say things that bring you to your knees…
One night, all of that stress and disappointment reached its peak. The time is going to come when you're so mad you could cry…
And cry they did, Levi in frustration and Daisuke in sorrow for all the people that were hurt by this individual, and would continue to be hurt until they could find something, anything! It just wasn't fair knowing this freak was out on the loose, killing and robbing people, getting to laugh it up day after day and night after night. Meanwhile, the people of Prism were losing hair and sleep trying to catch the perp, and yet they still had nearly no useful leads.
"And you know what one of the things I'm worried most about is?!" Levi asked, sniffling and giving an almost mad laugh. "I know it's crazy and stupid, and it's probably just the paranoia, but…but…but with you out in the field every day, no idea where this guy is or what his next move is going to be…" He couldn't finish the thought, but he didn't need to. Daisuke understood, and even through his own tears, he felt something deep touch his heart. You got the keys to me, and my heart was the achievement you unlocked.
"Oh, Levi, you don't need to worry about me…" He wrapped his arms around the other man.
"I know you're Superman, but even Superman has Kryptonite!" Levi wept. This was why Levi always held onto every word Daisuke said. It was always in fear of the worst, in case they somehow became the last words Daisuke ever said to him. No, it was not a pleasant thought, but again, being a detective wasn't all fun and games. That much was true, and Daisuke was never one to placate people with promises he couldn't keep. So instead, I'll just hold you through the night until you smile…
For a time, they only sat in silence, but eventually, Daisuke started to speak.
"I just want you to know that I need you, baby, so don't be afraid. Please, jump then fall into me, I'll catch you! You know that I'm never going to leave you, so say that you want to be with me too, because I'm going to stay through it all so don't be afraid to jump and fall…" And like a charm, it eventually worked, because every time Daisuke smiled, Levi smiled, and every time Levi shined, Daisuke shined for him. And every time you're here, baby, I'll show you I love you, so jump then fall into me!
Even through his tears, Levi couldn't stop a small smile. Daisuke really was Superman, his symbol of hope.
"I always forget to tell you I love you, but I want you to know I'll love you forever," he whispered wetly. Daisuke kissed his forehead.
"I love you, too, and I think I loved you from the very first day," he said.
"I remember watching you fly around the world, solving cases and talking to folks for clues and alibis," Levi said, still sniffling, but not crying. "I remember hoping you weren't out saving pretty girls, because I was always back at the office, love-struck and looking out the window."
Finally, both of them laughed. Levi wiped his nose before continuing. "But do you know what first gave me the reassurance that you weren't? I knew the flowers were from you, hand crafted just for me. The cards and the calls were always from you…"
"Well, like I said, Levi, I think I loved you from the very first day," Daisuke repeated, beaming. Levi saw his smile and smiled in return. The life of a detective wasn't an easy one, and it could be fraught with terror and grief, but in quiet moments like this, resting in one another's arms, Levi and Daisuke both knew that they wouldn't have traded this path for any other in the whole entire world.
AN: These are Penguinfangirl611's OCs, so thanks to her for putting in this request. This was actually a lot of fun to write!
Also, fun fact, Jump Then Fall is one of my favorite Fearless songs!
