The old ramshackle caravel drifted easy as you please, relieved of purpose for a spell. We band of misfits lazed about the deck without a care, soaking in the sunshine and respite from our usual misadventures. Captain monkey D. lolled about on the grotty figurehead as was his habit, hat tilted down and smile a mile wide. The straw-hatted menace looked peaceful for once, but behind that chuckleheaded grin you could bet gears were always turning.
That encounter with the government assassin had left our captain thoughtful in his own strange way. The Grand Line was looming closer by the day, vast and sinister and chock full of villains far worse than anything we'd faced yet. If we meant to survive long enough to claim that blasted One Piece, we'd need powers and weapons to match the monsters lying in wait.
And so the training began. "Oi, you lot! Front and center!" Our captain's grin took on a devilish gleam as he laid out his grand new scheme for pushing us all well past our limits. Haki and Rokushiki, he called them—mysterious arts of the CP9 and others, allowing feats impossible to mere mortals. The crew gulped in unison, knowing whatever sadistic "strengthening" regimen Luffy devised would mean nothing but grief and sore muscles for the foreseeable future.
When Luffy got an idea in his rubbery head, wild horses couldn't drag him from it. We resigned ourselves to our fate, facing those endless death-defying exercises and bizarre techniques with gritted teeth. What choice did we have? We'd follow that foolhardy captain to the ends of the earth and dive headfirst into every half-cocked adventure he dreamed up.
The old familiar ship faded behind veils of time and memory, a paradise lost where adventure was clean and swift with clear waters running fast to new horizons. How innocent we were, in those early sun-drenched days before the world came crashing down around our ears. Before each victory demanded darker sacrifice, and the sea itself turned traitor.
"Gather around, everyone!" Luffy called out.
The crew looked up in surprise but made their way over to the bow of the ship. "What's up, Luffy?" Usopp asked.
Luffy grinned. "I'm gonna start teaching you guys some special techniques—like the CP9 and others in the Grand Line use. It'll make you stronger and help you in tough fights!"
"Techniques?" Sanji asked, taking a long drag on his cigarette. "What kinds of techniques?"
"Haki and Rokushiki," Luffy said. The crew blinked at him in confusion. "Haki lets you sense people and predict their moves. Rokushiki are super-fast moves like Soru speed-step and Geppo moonwalk!"
The crew's eyes went wide. Such abilities seemed impossible. But they knew if anyone could teach them such extraordinary skills, it was their ridiculous captain.
"To start with, you need to strengthen your bodies," Luffy said. "So we're gonna do lots of endurance training! And you have to practice tapping into your spiritual energy to use Haki."
The crew looked at each other nervously but faced Luffy with determination. They had come this far by following his lead—it was time to push themselves even further beyond their limits.
"Bring it on, captain!" they chorused together. Luffy's laughter rang out over the sea as he leapt down to join them. Their real journey was only just beginning. The Grand Line wouldn't know what hit it.
Luffy put the crew through their paces, determined to strengthen their bodies to the level needed for the Rokushiki. He led them in laps around the deck, had them doing endless pushups, sit-ups and squats. Sanji and Zoro pushed themselves the hardest, their natural competitive spirit flaring up as always. By the end of the first week, the whole crew had never felt so sore—but they were beginning to see the results of their efforts.
Once Luffy deemed them ready, he started teaching them the first Rokushiki technique: Soru. "Soru lets you move at super-speed," he explained. "You kick off the ground dozens of times per second to accelerate yourself. Like this!"
He demonstrated, disappearing from sight for a moment before reappearing on the other side of the deck. The crew gasped.
"Soru requires extreme leg strength and speed," Luffy said. "Keep practicing your kicks and footwork. You have to tap into your momentum to glide across the ground."
The crew spent days practicing the rapid leg movements required for Soru, starting to build up speed and power. At first, they merely zipped short distances, but soon Nami was flash-stepping circles around Usopp, and Sanji was disappearing and reappearing all over the deck. Zoro alone struggled to pick up the technique, his legs not quite as nimble as the others. Although, he was quite adept at applying Rankakyu to his swords.
"Very good!" Luffy exclaimed. "Now for Geppo—the moonwalk." He began treading air as if walking up a staircase, ascending high into the air. The crew gawked at him in amazement.
Luffy dropped back to the deck, grinning ear to ear. "Geppo requires expelling air from your feet to lift you off the ground. Start by practicing the leg movements and try hovering for just a second. Keep at it and soon you'll be jumping through the air too!"
And so their bizarre training continued, the crew stumbling through the unfamiliar techniques but gradually mastering them through sheer determination and grit. By the end of the month, the Going Merry had become a flying playground, the crew zooming, jumping and gliding all over the place at impossible speeds. They were ready to astound the enemies of the Grand Line with their captain's strange and wondrous abilities. The reign of the straw hat crew was only just beginning.
With the crew now adept at using Rokushiki, Luffy turned his attention to teaching them Haki. "Haki is a power that lies dormant in all people," he explained. "There are two types: Observation Haki lets you sense the presence of others, and Armament Haki allows you to harness your spirit and use it as armor to defend yourself."
Luffy started by leading them in meditation exercises to help awaken their dormant Haki. At first, nothing seemed to change, but after several days of practice Usopp suddenly blinked in surprise. "I can sense where everyone is on the ship with my eyes closed!" he exclaimed. The crew quickly discovered they were developing the same ability.
"Very good," Luffy said. "You've awakened your Observation Haki. With practice you'll be able to sense more—people's energy and even their moves before they make them."
The crew continued honing their newfound senses, challenging each other to duels to test how far they could expand their Haki. Soon they were able to sense not just location and energy, but could faintly sense each other's moves and attacks an instant before they were made.
"Now for Armament Haki," Luffy said, grinning as always. He held out his arm, and to their astonishment, his skin turned pitch black. "Armament Haki lets you channel your inner spirit into an invisible armor. Hit me!"
Zoro swung his sword at Luffy's outstretched arm— and the blade rebounded as if striking solid stone. The crew gasped. They all attacked Luffy at once, but their blows glanced off his Haki-infused skin.
"Keep meditating to strengthen your willpower," Luffy instructed them. "Then channel that energy to surround your body. Picture an armor coating your skin—and make it reality with your Haki!"
At first, their Haki manifested only for a second before fading, but with constant practice their "invisible armor" could last longer and longer. Zoro was the first to fully master Armament Haki, able to coat his entire body for several minutes. Soon the others caught up, and Luffy laughed with pride at seeing his whole crew using Haki.
By the time they were ready to resume their voyage, the crew had grown tremendously in strength and skill. With their captain at the helm and new abilities at their command, they were prepared to brave the fiercest enemies and most perilous challenges the Grand Line could throw at them. Their journey to the One Piece was just beginning.
