Chapter Four

I attempted to get the lock off several more times after that, but I couldn't get the damn thing off. When the sun started to go down, I gave up and crawled into my boat, covering myself with the blanket.

When I woke up, there was a strong, familiar scent in the air. It was sweet and made me smile. It took me a moment to realize that it was the scent of the flowers from the watering hole.

I pulled the blanket down and sat up.

When I looked around, the area was covered in an assortment of flowers. The flowers weren't just from the watering hole, but there were some I hadn't seen before. I picked one of the new yellow ones up.

It was as big as my head, and reminded me of a sunflower, except the shape of the flower was in a heart. I placed the flower aside and looked around.

How in the world did these flowers get here? They were everywhere. I stood and looked around. There was a big basket filled with brightly colored fruits. Beside it was a large clay jug filled with water. There was no question now, there was definitely someone else on this island.

When I turned my head, I saw that the trunk was propped open. I gasped and ran to it, carefully avoiding stepping on the flowers. I didn't want to piss off whoever brought me these flowers by smashing them.

I dug through the trunk, finding several useful things. There was an extra blanket, clothes, a bottle of vodka, some toiletries, shoes, and finally, the radio. I grabbed it and twisted the dials.

The radio hissed loudly. I winced at the noise, but then something from the jungle screeched loudly. My eyes widened as I watched the trees shake violently as something ran through them.

A cold chill ran down my spine. What in the hell was that?

I turned the radio off, watching the jungle. It was quiet. Part of me wanted to turn the radio back on, but I didn't want to piss off whatever that was. It wasn't even working right. And I wasn't too inclined to continue trying.

I tossed the radio back into the trunk. I picked up the flowers and put them in a big pile. I wasn't exactly sure what the flowers meant. Where I was from, flowers meant several things depending on the occasion.

The flowers were very beautiful. It made me wonder if I had a secret admirer. I could be wrong though, maybe flowers here meant something else.

But the basket of food and water jug seemed as though this person was helping me to survive. The fruit in the basket was different than the fruit I had found yesterday. I picked up the lumpy red fruit and took a bite.

It was delicious. It seemed to melt in my mouth, the taste so wonderful and sweet. I finished off the fruit and picked another one. It was a pink and had little yellow spots. It was delicious as well.

Once I was full I took a big sip of the water. It was from the fresh watering hole. It was still cold. I examined both the clay jug and the basket. They both appeared to be handmade.

So I was one hundred percent sure there was someone else on this island now. A warm feeling washed over me. I felt as though I were being watched again. I looked over my shoulder and tried to find whoever was watching me.

"Thank you for the fruit and the water. And opening the trunk. I appreciate it." I said, knowing that someone was there, "It'd be really cool if you showed yourself. I'm not in any way dangerous."

No one answered or showed themselves. I wasn't surprised. It was fine, if my little friend didn't want to show themselves yet, then I wouldn't push it. They were helping me, if they wanted to stay hidden, that was fine.

When I felt the familiar pressure in my bladder, I walked to the ocean and submerged my lower half. It was unsurprisingly warm, this place never seemed to go below or above eighty degrees during the day.

As I was relieving myself, something sharp stabbed my foot. I gasped and fell backwards. I crawled out of the ocean as my foot began to burn.

Once I was on the sand I examined my foot. There was in fact something stuck in my foot. It looked like a little shell. I grabbed it with my fingers and tried to pull it out. The shell wiggled and moved closer inside of my foot. I gasped.

I got to my feet and limped back to the boat. There was a medical kit, I could use something to get this thing off.

I opened the kit and grabbed the tweezers. When it still wouldn't be removed, I poured the rubbing alcohol over it. The shell shriveled and fell off, leaving a little hole in my foot. I squeezed the hole, trying to make sure nothing was inside of it.

When nothing came out, I covered in with cream and a band-aide. The burning had stopped, my foot was just a little sore. I looked at the little shell.

What the hell was that? I'd walked into that part of the ocean many times and I've never been stuck by one of those things. I couldn't figure out if it was just a shell or some sort of animal. It looked like a plain shell.

I sighed, shaking my head. On this island, lord only knew what it was. Everything was so weird on this island.

Since I didn't have to venture into the jungle to get food or water, I decided to look through the booklet that was in the captain's trunk. I had seen it yesterday, but I hadn't bothered it.

Inside of the booklet were several pictures. I figured these people were his wife and kids. They were an adorable family. A big family. He had five kids. They were all very cute. I can't believe the captain had such cute kids; he was kind of rough looking.

I chuckled as I stared at the picture of the kids making funny faces. I really hoped the rest of the crew made it home to their loved ones. Me vanishing didn't really hurt anyone, my father passed away and my mother ran off when I was a baby. I didn't have any other family.

As I was looking through his pictures, my foot started to burn. I cried out, grabbed my foot with both hands. My hands were shaking as I pulled the bandage off.

The hole that was in my foot was bright red and was now leaking a yellowish substance. I squeezed it, but the moment I did, it started to burn painfully. I gasped; shit, I think whatever stabbed me was poisonous.

I poured the rubbing alcohol over it, but that only caused it to burn even more. I wasn't sure how to fix this. I didn't know if sucking it out would help or hurt it.

The only thing I could think of doing was tying off my leg to prevent it from spreading. I took one of the long socks from the captain's trunk and tied it as tightly as I could around my ankle. It hurt, but the burning had stopped spreading. I guess that was a good sign.

I hissed as I dragged myself to my boat to get out of the sand. I was trying to control my breathing as I settled down into the boat.

"It's okay, Bella, it's okay," I whispered to myself, "Just relax. Everything is going to be okay."

Six Hours Later

Everything was not okay. I'd been getting worse by the hour. The tourniquet only stopped the burning by just a little bit. Now the burning was radiating all the way up to my knee. And any little movement I made hurt every part of my body. It felt as though my brain and muscles were on fire.

I figured I was going to die. It's been nine days and I've survived this far. As someone whose only experience with survival outside was backyard camping, I'd say that's pretty good.

Even though I was burning, I could stop myself from shaking violently. My skin felt like it was freezing. I had a fever, at least that's what it felt like. I had the flu before, and this was very similar to that.

I had grown so weak at this point that when the night came, I couldn't muster up enough energy to cover myself with the blanket.

I didn't realize how much the island came to life at night. I mean, I heard the nightly noises, but I'd never seen the glowing of the plants. It was beautiful. It reminded me of the glowing from the different sea creatures and vegetation.

As I was staring up at the moons, I heard the sound of soft footsteps in the sand. I wanted to turn my head to see who was coming, but I knew if I did, my head would spin even more.

I felt a sudden sharp prick into my arm. I gasped, my arm reactively jerking. All the pain in my body suddenly started to go very numb. I was panicking, but I couldn't do anything about it. I couldn't move any part of my body. My vision also started to go slightly blurry.

Even though my vision was blurry, and it was dark, I could still see the figure above me. I couldn't make out any major details, but I could definitely see the big, bright red eyes. I felt a chill run down my spine.

The figure above me cocked its head to one side, then the other as it examined me. Finally it kneeled down, moving my body out of the boat and onto another surface.

The figure moved out a view, but I could feel my leg being lifted. I couldn't feel too much, but I felt the pressure of someone working on my foot.

Something sharp pressed against my skin. I felt some of the sting, which caused me to hiss but then sighing in relief. There had been a very uncomfortable amount of pressure in my foot, but now, that pressure was gone. I only felt relief.

When I hissed, the figure put its hand on my chest in a comforting manner. It did work, I suddenly felt calmness wash over me.

I don't know how much time passed, but finally, my foot was being wrapped. I was lifted again and placed into the boat. I wasn't laying on the same wooden surface though, I was laying on the soft pallet. It felt a lot better than the hard wood of the boat.

I heard shuffling around me. I was still numb so I couldn't move my head to see anything. After a while, the shuffling stopped, and the figure was standing over me again. It reached its hand down and touched my cheek.

I tried so hard to make my eyes focus, but whatever was shot into me still lingered. I wondered when the effects would wear off.

The figure disappeared from view as the blanket was pulled over the boat. I heard footsteps fading into the jungle. I figured since the mysterious figure had helped me and was retreating into the jungle, it was safe to close my eyes and go onto sleep.
