Chapter Five
I felt sore when I woke up. I turned, trying to find a comfortable position but everything was sore. I sighed and decided to sit up. It was painful, but if I just kept lying there then the soreness wouldn't work itself out.
I stretched, trying to shake the soreness. As I was stretching, I felt something wrapped tightly around my foot. I looked at my foot to see a green leaf wrapped around my foot all the way up to my calf. My eyebrows furrowed as I pulled the leaf back, careful not to disturb the rope that kept it in place.
There was a large incision from my foot to my calf. It had been sewn up and a clear gel was coating it. I wanted to touch it, but I didn't want to risk infection.
It was obvious I had some sort of surgery, but for what I couldn't exactly remember.
And then suddenly, it hit me. That creature that had been attached to my foot had made me very sick. I thought I was going to die, then last night, something pricked me, like a needle. There was someone there, helping me. All I could remember were red eyes.
This definitely confirmed it. There was someone on this island and they wanted to take care of me. What I couldn't figure out though, was if they wanted to make sure I survived, then why wouldn't they show themselves?
I stood up, putting some weight on my foot. It hurt, a lot. I fell back down onto my rear. I huffed and crawled back into the boat. As I was crawling into the boat, I saw that the bottom was covered in leaves.
I picked at one of the leaves but found that the leaves were sewn together. The leaves were a lot softer than the wooden boat I had been sleeping on. I was thankful for my island friend. They were really taking care of me. I just wish they would reveal themselves because I was starting to get pretty lonely.
I was glad my island friend had left me food and water. I could rest my leg for a few days and not have to worry about starving or dehydrating.
I sighed looking out to the ocean; at least I had a nice view for the next few days. I also had a book and my sketch pad, so, I guess I could do that until my leg was healed.
I grabbed the book and opened it. It was called Island of the Lost, which was pretty fitting considering the situation I was in.
The first chapter started off slow. The main character's name was John, he was a seasoned sailor who travelled around the world. The first chapter started with him retelling how he became a sailor and the first voyage he ever went on.
I wanted to continue reading, but I stopped myself. I'd start and finish chapter two tomorrow. There were fifty-eight chapters, and I didn't want to read half of it in one sitting. If I read a chapter a day, I would have entertainment for fifty-eight days. I really hoped there wasn't a second book or else it would kill me not knowing the ending.
Once I finished reading, I decided to sketch a little. I wanted to draw the figure from last night. I didn't really have a lot to go on, but I would try my best. The only details I had were the bright red eyes.
I reached into my bag and started sketching. I finished the creepy drawing a couple hours later. It was probably the creepiest drawing I've ever drawn.
But it wasn't really fitting for my island friend. Creepy was the last word I wanted to use to describe him or her. He or she was very helpful. And they were obviously looking out for me. I couldn't figure out why they were helping me, but I appreciated all of their help. I just wish they'd come out so I could tell them.
After a while, the sun started to set. It was beautiful. The colors in the sky reflecting against the crystal-clear water was mesmerizing. I got inspiration for a new sketch and quickly sketched it, trying to capture it before the sun went away.
As I was getting ready to curl up and go to sleep, I heard a pounding sound in the distance. I paused everything, even my breathing to listen.
It was a drum. It was distant, but it was definitely a drum. I recognized the steady, deep noise that a drum produces. I gasped and got to my feet. My foot was sore, but I didn't pay it any attention. There were definitely drums being played in the distance. A few moments later, the sound of feminine singing voices filled the air.
I could track the sounds. I bet I could find the people living here and get help. I mean, they couldn't be dangerous because I was constantly being helped by one of them.
I grabbed the knife and the lighter and headed into the woods.
Two Hours Later
Maybe this wasn't the best idea. I'd passed the same tree about four times now. I was completely lost. I hadn't thought this through and now the drums sounded even farther away.
I also didn't think about the dangerous predators that lurked in the jungle at night. There'd been several times I heard a hiss, or a growl and I ran. I guess that was how I ended up lost because now I couldn't even find my way back to the beach.
I thumped down onto the ground, pulling my knees up to my chest. My foot was burning, badly. I couldn't continue walking on it. I was thirsty and tired. I couldn't stop myself from crying.
I had been so stupid. Why had I been so stupid? Maybe it was jungle madness, but I knew it was just because I was stupid. I should've never run out into the jungle like this. Now I was completely lost. I let out a little sob.
Since I'd been in this place, I hadn't cried. I've kept my composure pretty well, but now I couldn't stop myself from just crying. I was just giving up. The little glimmer of hope I had disappeared and now I was just hopeless.
As I was sitting here crying, I heard a strange clicking noise. The noise sounded somewhat familiar. I lifted my head and looked around.
I spotted several pairs of bright red eyes in the darkness. A cold chill washed over me as I stared into the intimidating eyes. I gulped and slowly got to my feet.
The creature must've been crouching too, because when I stood, it stood as well. It was tall. Taller than anything I'd ever seen before. My eyes widened; I began shaking in terror.
The pain in my foot was suddenly gone as adrenaline rushed through my body; I took off running. Behind me, there were sounds of loud whistling and clicking. When I heard the footsteps behind me, I knew I was being chase. I couldn't help the scream that left my lips.
I stupidly looked back and ran straight into a tree. I was propelled backwards onto the ground. I hissed and put my hand on my forehead. When I pulled it back, I was bleeding quite a bit. I muttered a curse word under my breath.
The creature stepped out of the jungle. I screamed loudly as it stalked towards me. I could see it more clearly now. I hadn't looked at its other features, I was too busy staring into its red eyes.
It growled, a menacing sound that caused tears to stream down my face. I closed my eyes, waiting for it to kill me.
There was a roar from the distance. I opened my eyes to see the creature in front of me being slammed down into the ground.
There was another one on top of it. This new one was much bigger. It laid on top of the littler one, its hand pressing the smaller one's face into the ground and snarling in its ear.
As I watched the tussle in front of me, I felt myself blacking out. I tried to stop it and stay awake, but my head fell backwards. I closed my eyes, the last thing I heard was someone walking towards me.
Several Hours Later
I woke up to someone pressing something wet against my lips. I felt my eyebrows furrowed in confusion. My eyes opened slowly; they felt so heavy. When I opened my eyes, there was a face in front of me. It took a moment for things to unblur and the first thing to come to focus was a pair of bright red eyes.
I screamed and scrambled away from the creature holding me. I moved away from it until my back hit a wall. I looked around to see I was in a cave of some sort. I could hear the sound of a waterfall, but I couldn't see it anywhere.
My eyes were wide as they adjusted to the strange lighting in the cave. It wasn't as bright as the plants outside, but the rocks sparkled beautifully. It reminded me of multi-colored diamonds shining in the sunlight.
The creature in front of me cocked its head to the side, then took a step towards me. I reached into my pocket and pulled out the first thing I had grabbed.
I opened the lighter and a bright flame shot up from it. The creature in front of me jumped back slightly, then growled.
I gasped, "S-Stay back!"
It crouched down, hissing again, its eyes locked on the flame. A moment later, the flame traveled down to my finger.
"Ouch!" I gasped, grabbing my burnt finger, and dropping the lighter.
The creature hissed once more before grabbing the lighter and biting it. My eyes widened as I watched it rip the lighter in half, tossing the discarded pieces aside. I was shaking when it turned its head back to me.
It reached its hand out to me and grabbed my hand. I tried to jerk back, but it had a tight grip. I noticed that my hand was tiny in comparison to its giant hand.
"Let go of me," I snapped, "I'm fine, it's just a little burn."
It made a noise in the back of its throat; it resembled the noise my father used to make when he was dissatisfied with something. The noise caught me slightly off guard. I teared up, remembering the noise.
As I took a moment to push my memory away, the creature pulled something out of its bag. It grabbed my hand and started rubbing a cold salve on it. I gasped and tried to jerk my hand back, but it refused to let go.
When it released my hand, I examined it. The little burn mark was gone, and my finger did feel a lot better. I wiggled my finger to test it.
"Uh, thank you," I said; even though this creature probably didn't speak any sort of language, I didn't want to be rude.
"You are welcome."
I know so many of you were worried about the language barrier, but fear not I have a plan. A plan that will reveal itself in the next chapter! Unfortunately, I will not be updating again until next weekend. Hopefully this chapter will satisfy you until then!
