For all of you fans of this version of Edward because he's so sweet... remember, he is very angry right now. His pregnant mate snuck off and could've been killed! I hope you enjoy this chapter!
Chapter Forty-Two
I gulped as he stared down at me. His red eyes looking even more menacing with so much anger within them.
"I'm sorry," I said quickly.
"I cannot believe you did this," He hissed, "How… how could you!"
"I'm sorry," I said again. "I had to—,"
"You did not have to," He snapped. "You risked your safety and my son's safety! You could have been killed! And now you have sent Tanya off with a dangerous, unmated male!"
I jumped and looked down at my feet in embarrassment. I knew what I had done wasn't going to be Edward's favorite thing, but I guess I hoped he wouldn't be this angry.
"I'm sorry," I said in a small voice. "I didn't have a choice."
"You had a choice," He said. "You had plenty of choices!"
I felt tears well up in my eyes and my lips clamped together. I hated it when I clammed up. It only ever happened when I was really upset.
I jumped when Edward wrapped the blanket Tanya had brought around me. Once the blanket was tied around me so it wouldn't fall, he lifted me up bridal style and began walking towards the cave. I laid my head against his chest and stared blankly at his exposed skin.
"A-are you not cold?" I asked quietly.
"No I am not." He said in a monotone voice.
I bit my lip before speaking again. "I'm s-sorry Edward."
"I am to," He said, looking down at me. "I have never felt such anger towards you. I do not like it. I do not like feeling angry. Especially at you."
Tears started falling down my cheeks. Edward sighed and put his hand on my head, pushing it under his chin.
"We will talk about this later. Not now, when I am so angry."
"I'm sorry Edward."
"I know."
We found Tanya and Caius in a cave that was lit up by a fire. I looked around at the rocky interior of the cave. There wasn't much to this cave, it was simply a place where Caius slept, but he hadn't made it his home. The only thing that stuck out in this cave was a long, red cloth with golden beads braided into it. I wanted to ask him what it was from, but he seemed a little busy at the moment.
Tanya was sewing his arm together and Caius was watching her as if he were waiting for her to hurt him. His body was tense, ready to jump at any moment. Tanya didn't seem bothered by this, she just continued to heal him gently.
Edward stood in the opening of the cave, staring at the two of them. He refused to let me down or take a step further into the cave.
"You may come in," Caius snapped at Edward without turning his head.
Edward snarled wordlessly at him.
"If you continue to stand there, you will draw the animals near. I would prefer them to stay away." Caius snarled back.
Edward let out an annoyed sigh and walked in, keeping me close to his chest.
"Hurry and finish Tanya," Edward said. "Our family will be worried about us."
"You sound just like your father," Caius snorted as he looked at Edward.
Edward snarled. "Do not speak about my father!"
"It's okay Edward," I whispered to him, pressing my lips against his jawline, hoping to calm him down.
"I know more about your father than you do, boy," Caius said before turning to Tanya. "I know your mother and father to, female."
"I know you do," Tanya said coldly. "They both remember you."
"How is Sasha?"
"She is fine."
"And does she still make the designs with her hair?"
Tanta smiled, the coldness leaving her voice, "Yes she does. The other day she painted it, but when she tried to rinse it out, the paint color stayed in her hair. Now she has blue hair."
He chuckled. "She did that to my hair when we were children. She turned my hair green. It took a long while for the color to come out. My mother had to scrub it nearly every day."
Tanya laughed. "I had to put my foot down when it came to my hair." She lifted a thick chuck of her braid to reveal a light pink, bald spot. "This was after she accidentally ripped a piece out."
Caius fingers tentatively touched the spot. "How did she do this?"
"She made several braids in my hair, but she braided them to tightly and when I was running, it got caught up in a tree. You remember this, Edward? We were children, you were there."
"Yes, I remember." Edward said coldly; from his tone, it was quite clear he didn't want to be here. "Hurry Tanya. We cannot travel at night. My mother will be worried."
Tanya made a face as she looked over Caius. "You have a lot more injuries that need tending to."
"Finish what you can." Edward said. "We need to go."
Tanya paused for a moment before sighing. "Edward, how about you head back down to the village? Our family needs you and Bella there."
His eyes widened. "I am not leaving you."
"I will be fine," She smiled at him. "Go head back down. Get Bella home, she needs to rest and eat."
Edward's nostrils flared. "Tanya, I will not leave you here alone… with him."
"I will be fine."
"I will not hurt the female," Caius hissed at Edward. "Take your pregnant mate and leave."
Edward growled at Caius. "Do not tell me what to do."
"Then stay!" Caius finally roared, his temper reaching its boiling point. He jumped to his feet, ripping the stitches Tanya had started, causing her to sigh. "Do what you want! I do not care what Carlisle's boy does! Leave! Stay!"
Edward met this roar with one of his own, swinging me down onto my feet and pushing me behind him.
"Tanya come! Leave him to suffer in the mess he created!" Edward snarled. "He is not worth it!"
"Edward please stop," I told him, grabbing onto his arm. "Please."
"I am fine Edward. I will stay and heal him. He is not going to hurt me," She said before looking at Caius. "Right?"
"I will not hurt you, female." He said, his eyes still on Edward.
Tanya looked back at Edward. "There you go. Take Bella and get her home. She needs Esme right now and she needs your hut to rest. This stress is too much for her."
Edward looked at me. I could hear him inhaling my scent. He did this a few times before letting out a soft sigh. He stroked the hair out of my face before nodding.
"I will leave now." Edward said as he crouched down to let me onto his back. "But I will be back as soon as my father is home. Then Emmett and I will come back and get you."
Tanya smiled at Edward. "I am fine. If I thought he was going to hurt me in anyway, I would not stay."
Edward cut his eyes at Caius, "If you hurt her…"
"I will not hurt the female." Caius hissed.
"She has not eaten yet," Edward said. "Make sure to feed her and get her clean water."
"I am not her mate. I will not care for her."
"I am fine," Tanya cut in before Edward could speak. "I do not need anyone to take care of me. Now go. Get Bella home."
Edward turned and headed out of the cave. I spun around and gave a thumbs up to Tanya. She rolled her eyes but gave me the smallest smile.
I couldn't help but smile; this was the vison Auk'ell'ieks'Ognil had shown me. Tonight, after Tanya healed his wounds, he would bring her food to thank her. They would continue talking and before the sun rose tomorrow morning, Tanya and Caius will have mated and would be expecting a beautiful daughter.
I laid my head against Edward's shoulder, hugging him tightly. I knew he was very angry with me right now. It was going to take a miracle to get him to forgive me.
For now, I would keep my mouth shut. I knew Edward well enough to know that when he was feeling big emotions, he needed time to process everything in silence. It was a long way back down the mountain. I could give him the silence he needed.
Several Hours Later
I had fallen asleep on the walk down. I wasn't sure how much time had passed, but when I woke up again, the sun was starting to go down and we had just entered the thick jungle. I knew we weren't making it home before dark. We would probably have to make a shelter around here and camp out for the night. Edward wouldn't travel with me at night.
"Are you awake?" Edward asked without looking down at my face.
I yawned. "Yeah, I'm up now."
"Good," He said as he gently placed me onto my feet. "We are talking right now."
I gulped and shuddered. I knew this was coming and I was not looking forward to it at all. Edward turned to face me, crossing his arms. His eyes weren't holding as much anger, but he was still very angry. I could see it in his thoughts and I could feel it radiating off him. I couldn't help but shudder again. I didn't like Edward angry.
"I'm sorry," I started. "I know what I did was really, really stupid—,"
"Possibly the dumbest…" He growled, cutting himself off so he didn't disrespect me. Even though he was so angry at me, he still wouldn't disrespect me. "How could you do this?"
"I had to." I said, twisting a piece of the blanket between my fingers. "I-I'm sorry."
"Do you understand how badly this could have been?" He asked, taking a step towards me. "Do you understand what could have happened?"
I nodded. "I was safe. I knew Caius wasn't going to hurt me."
He let out a sharp growl before striking the tree that was near him. It shook from the force and cracked. He kept his fist against the tree as he calmed his breathing. I jumped, feeling my gut clench tightly in fear.
"You risked your life! You risked our son's life!" He nearly roared, looking down at the tree instead of at me.
"I'm sorry!" I cried as tears began to stream down my face. "Auk'ell'ieks'Ognil came to me in a vison. She showed me what I had to do! I'm sorry I lied to you, I'm so sorry I scared you. But I'm fine and the babies are fine."
Edward was very quiet for a moment before saying. "The babies?"
"Baby." I corrected myself, rubbing my stomach protectively. Careful Bella. Don't bring this up again, he's already angry I don't need to add fear to his emotions.
He inhaled deeply before asking, "Are you unhappy?"
"What?" I asked, my brows furrowing. "What do you mean? I'm happier than I've ever been."
He finally looked over at me. "Well, you certainly talk and do a lot of things that indicate that you would rather die than continue living. I just do not understand Bella, why you are lying to me. Help me understand why you believe there are two babies inside of you. Help me understand why you travelled alone through dangerous jungle, up a dangerous mountain to face an even more dangerous male. Why are you looking for death?
"I am not," I snapped at him.
"Then prove me wrong," He said, walking towards me and towering over me. "Show me something that proves you are not looking for death."
"Edward I can't help any of this," I almost screeched, more tears falling down my face. "Do you really think I want any of this? If I had a choice, I would be normal. I wouldn't be having visons and having to do dangerous things. I am sorry I'm like this."
His face softened after a moment. "You could have died."
"I know!" I sobbed. "I had to do this. I didn't have a choice."
His arms wrapped around me. "You should have told me. I would have helped you."
"Because you wouldn't have believed me," I said, my voice cracking. "You don't believe me about the babies, and you wouldn't have believed me about this."
"I am sorry. I just… the things you are predicting and doing all lead to death." He sighed. "Or could have resulted in death. I will not allow my mate to die."
"Auk'ell'ieks'Ognil told me I had to do it. I didn't have a choice."
Edward groaned and pulled away. He rubbed his hands over his face as he processed what I was telling him. I knew he was having trouble with this because he did believe me, but his anger and his fear was overshadowing every rational thought.
He inhaled deeply before asking. "What else did she tell you?"
I dropped my head and shook it, not wanting to tell him everything that was coming.
He placed his hand under my chin and forced me to lift my head. "We cannot travel any further through the jungle. We are making shelter here."
"Okay." I whispered.
"You are telling me everything," He said as he lifted me and slowly brought us to the ground so that I was sitting in the open space of his crossed legs. "I want to know everything you know. I need to know everything so that I can help you. If you have to do something like this again I do not... I cannot take it. I am... I am having a hard time trusting you now."
I felt like I had been stabbed in the heart. I closed my eyes and fat tears fell from them. Even though it hurt me to hear this, I knew Edward would have a hard time trusting me now. What I had done to him was awful.
I took a deep breath before looking back up at him.
I know you guys hate my cliffhangers but I love them! I haven't started working on the new chapter yet, but when I finish it, I'll post it! Hopefully you enjoyed this chapter and you understand why Edward is so upset! Have a wonderful week!
