Chapter 2: Revelations

Flashback

5 years earlier

October, 2010

After going to the doctor and getting an 'official' positive result, they decided to wait to share the news, although to be perfectly honest waiting was very hard to do, especially when it came to Grissom's mom because he knew how happy she would be and he couldn't wait to see her reaction.

But now that Sara was three months pregnant, she, and he for that matter, couldn't hold it in any longer, so they decided the first person they would tell would be his mother.

They were in his childhood home, they just had dinner and his mother was getting the desert from the kitchen, so Sara and Grissom had a moment to themselves, acknowledging to one another that tonight was really the night they were going to share the amazing news.

Once Betty Grissom walked into the room with three plates of apple pies, Grissom stood up from his seat with a smile, signing. 'Mom, I'll help you.'

Betty just nodded while Grissom took the plates from her while she sat down in her normal spot at the dining room table, then after setting them in place, he kneeled down so he was more eye-level with her before he continued to sign, more emotion was going through him each second. 'Sara and I got you something.'

Betty shook her head with a smile. 'It's not my birthday, sweetheart.'

Grissom chuckled. 'You don't think I know when my mom's birthday is? Of course, I know that. But after seeing what it is, I'm sure it might feel that way, even Christmas rolled into one.'

Betty just nodded with another smile while Sara placed a gift bag on the table so the other woman could grab it, and after she did, she pulled out a black t-shirt before unfolding it and reading the front of it. 'Grandma's first grandchild'

Betty sets the shirt down on the table and looked at her son with tears in her eyes. 'Truly?'

Grissom nodded with tears in his eyes. 'Truly mom, you are finally going to be a grandma.'

While Grissom could see tears of joy in his mother's eyes while she was going for a hug, there wasn't an ounce of surprise, so he 'asked' the moment they finally pulled back. 'You knew, didn't you?'

She shook her head. 'I wasn't a 100% sure. But how you both were acting got me a little suspicious, I just hoped that whatever was going on, it wasn't life threatening. I also didn't want to get my hopes up too much the other way either.'

Grissom nodded in understanding. 'We just wanted to wait...'

She cuts him off with a nod. 'I get it sweetheart. I'm happy for you.' She then turned to Sara. 'I'm happy for you as well, congratulations.'

Sara nodded with a smile. 'Thank you, and congratulations to you too, Grandma.'

Betty wiped a few tears off her cheeks as she turned to her son again. 'I'm going to be a grandma.'

'You are, and the best one out there, just like you are as a mom. I love you.'

'I love you too, thank you.'

'And thank you '

They kissed each other on the cheeks before wrapping one another in a hug once again.

End of Flashback

Later that night

While the house has been updated, even a few more rooms added, since Grissom was a child, it still felt like home to him, and he was picking up the dishes from the dining room table as he looked at the normal spot his mother would be sitting in had she still been alive.

As he sighed, Sara walked up to him and placed her hand on his shoulder. "Babe, you ok?"

He turned his head with a nod and small smile. "Yeah, I was just thinking about when we told my mom we were pregnant with William. That look that she gave me was pure magic, it was like I just gave her..."

Sara cuts him off while cupping his cheek. "The whole world, I know. She loved and dotted on William so much."

He smirked. "More like spoiled him you mean."

She chuckled with a nod. "Yeah, but she only did what grandma's do, she couldn't help herself."

He nodded with a sad sigh this time. "I still miss her Sara, and I wish that she was here for multiple reasons, especially for..."

She cuts him off with tears in her eyes, feeling her husband's pain. "I know babe, me too."

She kissed his cheek and brings him into her arms the best she could with him still holding the dishes in his hands.

It was two months ago last year they unexpectedly lost Betty Grissom. She was a fierce, strong woman who took crap from no one and didn't let her deafness hinder her in anyway, a woman who lost the love of her life early in their marriage and ended up raising a young boy on her own while also trying to manage a successful art gallery.

And if anybody would have asked her, outside of the time she got to spend with her husband before he had died and watching her son grow into a man she was proud of, the last three years of life were the best. She finally got to fulfill a lifelong dream of being the loving and dotting grandma she always wanted, she wouldn't trade those years for anything.

After they pulled back, they kissed softly before he continued on to the kitchen while Sara stared at the spot Betty would normally sit at and had her own memory of Betty Grissom, which happened to be during the first time they met.

Flashback

Ten years ago

August, 2005

Three months after they officially started dating, Grissom felt it was time to introduce the two women he loved more than anything to each other and the plan was to do it on his birthday since his mother wanted him to come down and see her since it had been awhile.

So, wanting a break from keeping their relationship, for the most part, inside either of their apartments, they set off to Santa Monica, and to say that Sara was nervous as hell was an understatement, because while she knew from the start Grissom was her 'one and only', she didn't want to start on the wrong foot with his mother. She didn't want there to be any tension between them so it would put Grissom in the middle of it, considering as far as she was concerned, she was going to be around for a long time and that's a lot of years putting someone in the middle of something like that.

But whatever nervousness that Sara felt actually melted away the moment two women met. Betty was approachable, nice and kind, and if she had been acting like that for the sake of her son she didn't really know, and she wouldn't know how the woman really felt about her until the night before Sara and Grissom was leaving to go back to Vegas.

Grissom was in the bathroom getting ready for bed, and Sara was coming out of the kitchen after getting a glass of water and saw Mrs. Grissom sitting at the dining room table, drinking her evening hot tea before bed. The two women smiled at one another before Mrs. Grissom did a 'thank you' sign with a bright look on her face, even a few tears in her eyes.

Now Sara wasn't the greatest at signing yet, considering she's only been learning since she started dating Grissom, but she did know the sign for that, and had a confused look on her face on why his mother was thanking her, so Mrs. Grissom picked up a pencil and wrote on a small notebook sized paper before sliding it over to the other side of the table.

Sara walked over to it and read the note Mrs. Grissom had written.

'Thank you for making my son so happy, I've just been waiting for the day when he would come visit me with that special look in his eyes, you are the woman he's been waiting his whole life for, and I only hope for the best for the both of you, may it be filled with nothing but joy and happiness.'

Sara looked into Betty's eyes with tears in her eyes, wishing she could sign to her just how much her words meant to her and that her son is the only man she ever, truly loved, so she hoped Betty could read all of how she felt in her eyes.

A moment later Betty nodded with a smile in understanding before getting up from the chair, taking her tea with her and heading to her bedroom.

End of Flashback

Just as Sara was coming back to the present, still looking at that empty chair, she jumped slightly when she felt her husband's hand land on her shoulder and his soft, concerning voice. "Honey, are you ok?"

She turned around with tears in her eyes and nodded. "I am, I miss your mom as well, and I hope our daughter will be just like her, strong and brave, no matter what life throws at her."

He smirked as he placed his hand on her three month pregnant stomach. "Now you are hoping for a daughter?"

She nodded as she cupped his cheek. "Yes. I also know how much you want one yourself."

After the birth of their son, which Sara was thrilled that it was a son, they weren't sure if another pregnancy was doable. But they never gave up hope of having a second a child, mostly because they didn't want their son to grow up as an only child like they did, so when this new little one shows up in this world both of their babies will be considered miracle babies.

He then spoke with emotion. "Not to say I don't love our son very much."

She ran her thumb up and down his cheek as she spoke with even more emotion. "Oh, I know that, you have this wonder look on your face every time you look at our son."

"I can't help it, I mean I might be a little biased but he's amazing and already pretty smart. Like Catherine would say, he's a walking genius. I'm actually surprised we don't have him signed up for school, despite him being only 4."

She sighed with a nod as she removed her hand. "I just want him to be a child and play with his same aged friends for as long as possible, because I know once he starts school, it's going to be a whole new world for him, especially if he skips any grades."

He smirked. "Which I won't be surprised if he does."

She chuckled with a nod before they headed off to another room to see what their son is up to so they could spend time with him before bedtime.

Grissom finished the last sentence of the children's book he practically knew by heart, closed the book and watched his son sleeping as he thought back to his most cherished moments from when Sara was pregnant to the day their little one was born.

Flashback

October, 2010

Once Sara was in the examination room and settled with Grissom right by her side holding her hand, the doctor came in with a smile. "Morning Mrs. and Dr. Grissom, I bet your excited about this checkup."

It was Sara's three-month checkup, and they will be able to hear their little one's heartbeat.

Both of them nodded with bright smiles as Grissom replied after clearing his throat. "We actually hardly slept last night."

She nodded with a smile. "Well let's get this exam started then, but first I need to check Sara." The doctor looked at Sara and asked. "You want your husband in here with you for that?"

Sara looked at Grissom, and he just squeezed her hand with a look on his face that said it was up to her, but preferred to stay because when he said he wanted to be with her every step, he meant it, so she nodded with a smile before looking at her doctor again. "He can stay."

Plus, while her doctor was a woman, her husband being there kept her calm, so it helped her as well, especially since he really wanted to be there for her.

Sara's doctor nodded with an encouraging smile before she started her exam, which Sara and Grissom just looked at one another with loving looks.

Once she was done with the exam for Sara, she set up for the ultrasound, then not long after putting the doppler on Sara's stomach, the doctor smiled. "You hear that?"

Both filled up with even more emotion, Grissom spoke after cleaning his throat. "That's our baby."

"It sure is, and it sounds like it should. You have a strong one in there."

Grissom looked down at his wife and squeezed her hand softly. "Look at that dear, he or she is already strong like their mother."

The doctor smiled as she watched Sara smile with shyness before they go back to looking at the screen with a look of wonder and awe.

For as long as she's been a doctor she could tell when parents were really excited for their baby or not, and these two were beyond that, baby Grissom was going to be the luckiest baby out there with these two as his or her parents, there was no doubt in her mind he or she was already extremely loved.

Christmas, 2010

Before it was revealed what they were having, Sara and Grissom both kept going back and forth on whether they wanted to know before the birth, and as much as they wanted to be surprised when their baby first came into this world they decided to know the gender the first appointment they could. But not everyone knew the same day, Sara and Grissom decided to let them wait until Christmas for the big reveal.

So when it finally hit Christmas time, even though Sara and Grissom stayed in Santa Monica at their current residence, which was in a nice apartment complex, they set up for a video chat with the team, and when it was time for their schedule 'meeting', once Betty arrived at the apartment, they started it up, seeing Nick and Catherine at her place, which Catherine said the rest of them will be there shortly, so they just chatted, mostly about the health status of her and the baby.

Once the rest of them did show up, Sara was the one that spoke while Grissom signed to his mother what she was saying. "Ok everybody, thank you for joining us this evening. I know it's a little different on spending Christmas this way, but considering we couldn't get everybody together in the same room any other way, this is what we got."

Catherine spoke in a warm tone. "The important thing is we are still here together."

After everybody nodded in agreement, Sara continued. "Now Gil and I had sent you all a gift last week with a color somewhere on it that will tell you the gender of our baby, so I hope none of you had already spoiled the surprise." As much as each of them wanted to open their gifts to peak at it, they didn't, they even showed Sara on camera that none of their boxes looked retaped, so after Sara chuckled and congratulated them on their patience, she finished. "Alright, you may now open your gifts."

They all started opening their gifts and when they found out it was a boy, they all congratulated them while Betty had shown a little more emotion as she looked at her son. 'A son? I'm getting a grandson?'

Grissom nodded with a smile with tears in his eyes. 'Yes mom, a grandson.'

Mrs. Grissom stood up from her spot on the couch and gave her son a big hug, both letting a few tear down their cheeks as everybody else watched the scene with a few tears in their eyes as well.

4 Years earlier

Late March, 2011

Grissom, who was currently a substitute teacher at UCLA until they can find him a permanent teaching position, was teaching his last class of the day when his phone goes off, but not realizing it was his phone since he was so into his lesson, he stops it and looks at his class with a disapproving look and stern tone. "You guys know how I feel about phones in my classes, put them on silent when you come in."

One of his male students cleared his throat and spoke. "Uh professor, I think that's your phone?"

They all chuckled as Grissom headed for his desk, which when he was halfway there it went off again, so he looked at his class with an apologetic look. "Sorry guys, normally I would also turn my phone on silent but..."

He trailed off as he picked up his phone and read an all-cap text from his mom, indicating the urgency of the situation. 'SARA'S WATER BROKE, COME TO THE HOSPITAL NOW!'

He turned to his class with wide-eyes. "Uh everybody I have to go." He looked at his teaching assistant, and she nodded before Grissom looked at the class again. "Mandy is going to finish up the lesson, I hope you all have a good spring break and see you in a week." Then after grabbing his briefcase and jacket he was out the door while hearing congratulations from his students.

A few hours later

After what felt like forever to the both of them, Sara and Grissom heard their son's first cry as he came into this world, and the moment the little boy was in Sara's arms, she felt the most complete she ever had, and while there was still a few doubts on how good of a mother she'll be, she knew one thing, her son was going to be protected at all costs, nothing was more important than his safety.

As they were both falling in love with their son each second that went by, her doctor walked up them and spoke with a smile. "So, do we have a name for this little one?"

Sara and Grissom looked at one another, and he asked. "What do you think honey? The name that we choose from the suggestions we got, does it still fit him?"

Their friends/family had given them name ideas, which Sara fell in love with them all, but there was just one name that stood out to her, a name that was named after two important people, and while she didn't have the privilege of knowing one of those people, the stories she's heard about him, especially from her mother-in-law, who gave them that name as a suggestion, only made her fall in love with it even more, so Sara nodded. "Yeah, it's perfect."

He nodded with a smile before looking at Sara's doctor. "The name we have chosen for our son is William Arthur Grissom."

"Very well, we'll give you a few minutes before taking you back to your room."

Grissom spoke with emotion. "Thank you Dr. Baker."

She replied as she looked at his wife. "Your wife should get the thanks, she did most of the work."

Grissom smiled as he looked at his wife. "Oh, believe me, she'll get all the thanks in the world for the rest of our lives."

They chuckled while Sara nodded. "And he means that."

The doctor nodded with another smile before leaving the two parents alone for a few minutes.

Grissom cups his wife's cheek with tears in his eyes. "You did it honey, are you ok?"

Sara nodded with a sniffle. "For the most part I am. He's so beautiful Gil, I already love him so much."

"I know, me too." Grissom looked down at the bundle of joy in his wife's arms, then bent down so he could kiss his head and whisper. "I love you little man, welcome to the world, William Arthur Grissom."

End of Flashback

Grissom wiped a few tears off his cheeks, placed the book on the nightstand, stood up, bent down and kissed his son's head before whispering. "I love you, William Arthur Grissom, sleep tight."

As he pulled back, Hank, who was just as protective towards William as his parents were, came into the room and took his spot at the end of the bed, so once Grissom pulled back from his son, he walked to the end of the bed and gave Hank a few pets while whispering to him. "Good boy, you continue to protect our little man."

Hank wagged his tail and gave Grissom a few kisses on his arm before laying his head down so it was facing the young boy, keeping an eye on him for as long as he was awake, then Grissom smiled as he removed his hand from Hank before he walked towards the door and walked out after turning the light off, cracking the door wide enough so Hank can get out when he wanted or needed to, which Hank really only left William's side when it was more of need.

When Grissom had made it into the master bedroom, Sara was sitting up in bed with a book in her hand.

She smiled at him when he had walked in the room, and while he gave her a smile back there was something else behind his eyes, so she asked. "You ok, babe?"

He nodded with a small sigh. "Yeah, I was just thinking about our son."

She nodded in understanding before smirking. "Well, nothing new there, what moments?"

He smiled brightly. "Some of my favorites, our three-month check-up, on Christmas when we had that video chat gathering to reveal we were having a boy, and probably my top five moment, our son…."

She cuts him off softly. "Being born."

After he nodded with another sigh, he shuts the door while Sara spoke after placing her book on the nightstand. "I'll admit those are some good memories, and they'll rank pretty high for me too, especially when our son was born." Then her tone took a slightly passionate turn as she moved her blankets from her body, revealing her in a short, red nighty. "But I've got some not so innocent memories while being pregnant that rank high up there as well."

When Grissom finally turned around, he saw what his wife was wearing, so he raised an eyebrow as he walked towards her side of the bed, whispering softly. "Oh, you do, huh? And what are those?"

He stopped at her side of the bed, which by then she had turned her body so she would be in front of him, waist level, so she moved her hands to the hem of his shirt and lifted it up as far as she could while sitting down, making him do the rest while she slid his sweatpants down his legs, revealing him in his boxers before she spoke while tugging on his hand. "How you loved me, how you made me feel, while I was pregnant, and after."
