Chapter 5: One moment changed everything
Next morning
July 4, 2015
Sara woke up with Grissom's hand on her stomach under her shirt as he ran his thumb up and down.
They smile at one another as he whispered. "Good morning. I hope I didn't wake you?"
She shook her head as she moved her hand to cup his cheek. "You didn't, and good morning to you too. What's going on? What were you thinking about?"
He looked at her stomach with a wider smile. "When we found out we were pregnant again."
Sara chuckled. "And I wasn't even the first one to find out."
Grissom chuckled in response as their minds take them back to three months ago.
Flashback
Three months earlier
It was their last weekend together before Sara's hours at the lab were going to change to a more full-time schedule, so the Grissom family was at the beach enjoying their time together. Grissom was sitting in a beach chair, reading, well trying to, but seeing his wife, son and dog near the shoreline was taking his attention away from it.
Sara was holding William's hand while the little boy was tossing the ball with his other one as far as he could in the ocean so Hank could go get it and bring it back. That went on for about 15 minutes until Sara could tell Hank was getting a little tired, so the three of them walked back up the beach, which William slipped his hand out of his mother's and ran to his father with excitement, asking if he had seen him throw the ball in the ocean and watched Hank get it.
Grissom nodded his head with a smile. "I did. Good job buddy, you could be the next Jake Arrieta."
When William just looked at his father with confusion on his face, Sara spoke with a smile as she sat down in her chair. "Your father is comparing you to a baseball pitcher, sweetie." William just said 'oh' while shrugging his shoulders before he started playing and Grissom gave Sara a look of surprise, which caused her to smile/chuckle. "Hey, you know I do listen to you when you talk about baseball players, especially if they play or have played for the Cubs, so of course I would know that one."
He nodded with a smile, happy that even after all these years, while baseball still wasn't a huge deal to her, she does occasionally watch it with him and pays attention when he talked about it, so she was right about that.
Grissom shifted his attention to his son when he wanted to build some sandcastles with his toys while Sara just enjoyed the sun.
After a moment or two, Hank walked towards Sara, sat down next to her, tilted his head a little then laid his chin on her stomach, causing Sara to smile and started petting him before he started whining and licking her stomach.
They all stopped what they were doing, and William looked at their dog with concern. "Daddy, what's wrong with Hank? Is mommy ok?"
Grissom started to shake his head, then looked at Sara in shock, remembering how Hank use to do that sometimes when she had been pregnant with William. "Sara?"
Sara started to shake her head too, but then stopped, counting days in her head before she looked at her husband in shock. "I mean I could be, I haven't really..." She stopped and shook her head, ending softly. "I just didn't want to get our hopes up, like the other times."
He nodded while replying with comfort. "I get it, honey. But maybe it's something, you know how Hank was when you were pregnant with William."
As she nodded William asked again, still looking at Hank with concern. "What's wrong?"
Grissom shook his head with a smile as he started to pack their bags. "Nothing son, but we have to leave."
William looked at his unmade sandcastle with a pout. "But I haven't finished yet."
"I know, and I'm sorry, buddy, but your mom and I need to do something. We'll come back another day and you can make a new one."
He sighed, knowing what little work he had already done will be destroyed, but he also knew whining about it won't get him anywhere, so he just nodded sadly and helped his father pack up, which the parents felt for him, but there was something very important they needed to check.
45 minutes later
The trip to the store after leaving the beach, the long line at the only available check-out, the drive home and the waiting felt like forever to them, but when they saw the 'plus' sign on the pregnancy test, they were over the moon, much like when they found out they were pregnant with William.
They pull back from their long hug, and he cupped her cheek with tears in his eyes. "We are having another baby."
Sara nodded with tears in her eyes as well. "Our dream will finally be complete. I almost can't believe this is finally happening again."
"I know, but I never gave up hope that this could happen again."
She cupped his cheek with her tears now going down her cheeks. "I know that babe, and your hope is what kept me going. Thank you for never giving up."
He shook his head with a smile while he continued to wipe her tears away. "I have already beaten the odds once when I got my chance with you, and a second time when you were pregnant with William, I knew we could do it again."
She brings him closer to her. "I love you."
"I love you too."
They kiss softly before they wrap their arms around each other again.
End of flashback
As they came back to the present, Grissom smiled as he continued to run his thumb up and down her stomach. "It was a beautiful day."
She nodded with a smile while she ran her thumb up and down his cheek. "Yes, it was, but honestly, any day I get to spend with my family, is a beautiful day."
He nodded in return as he moved closer to her. "Right you are."
Their lips touched a moment later and it was short and light at first, then Sara had moved her hand from his cheek to slide down his back, so Grissom took that as a sign and moved so he was above her as she laid down.
As their kisses became more passionate both their hands were moving the hems of their shirts up, wanting them off so they could feel each other's skin, but right as they pulled back from the kissing and was getting ready to take off the shirts that was in their way at the moment, they hear a little knock on the door and their son's voice. "Mommy, daddy you up yet?"
They looked at one another and started chuckling before Sara spoke with a smirk. "It never fails."
Grissom smirked in return as he moved so he was back in place on the bed. "Well least he learned how to knock first."
They remember the first time when William just barged right into their room, which while they weren't exactly in a 'compromising' position yet, they were very close, so after that day, they would lock the door and taught William to knock first. But considering they weren't at home and had no actual plans to go 'there' here, the moment just happened so they didn't think to lock the door first.
Sara chuckled before speaking towards the closed door. "Yes, baby we are up."
A second later the door opens, and he runs in the room with excitement, Hank following behind him. "We get to go to the zoo today!"
Grissom helped William get in the bed while Sara asked with a smile, happy to see the excitement in her son. "Yeah, and what else is happening today?"
"The park, then we get to see fireworks when it gets dark."
Sara nodded while bringing her son into her arms. "That's right, buddy."
William sighed in his mother's arms. "But before we do all of that, can we have breakfast, I'm hungry."
They chuckled with nods before Grissom spoke. "Of course, let's go downstairs and see what we can make."
After Sara kissed her son's temple, he moved out of her arms so Grissom could place him back down on the floor, and he replied while waiting for his parents to get out of bed. "I hope there are stuff to make pancakes."
They chuckled again, met one another at the end of the bed, each took William's hand before walking out of the room, down the hallway, then down the stairs, only letting go of his hand when they were off the last step, where William, which he had smelt food, ran to the kitchen to see Nick by the stove.
"Hi Uncle Nick."
Nick turned around to see the little man with a smile. "Good morning, buddy. I sure hope your parents are up to help you downstairs."
He nodded while Sara and Grissom walked into the room, but before they could do their greeting, the little boy continued without even thinking about how his next comment would sound. "Yeah, they were up, and they must have not been doing any grown-up stuff because the door was unlocked."
Nick looked at Sara and Grissom with a raised eyebrow while they were looking at him in shock then embarrassment before Sara shook her head. "Nick..."
But he cuts her off while shaking his head with a chuckle as he goes back to the bacon. "I don't want to know what goes on in that bedroom, ok. We won't speak about it."
Both Sara and Grissom nodded in agreement before Sara cleared her throat and looked at her son, who was oblivious to the uncomfortableness in the room at the moment, so she wanted the subject to change. "Honey, are you going to tell Uncle Nick what we have planned for the day?"
WIlliam nodded again before telling his uncle what was in store for them today while Sara and Grissom got some coffee, then the little boy asked. "Are you going to come?"
Nick sighed as he flipped some bacon. "I'm sorry buddy I can't, I have to work. But I will be able to get to see the fireworks with you later tonight, is that ok?"
"Yes."
As Grissom was asking William what he wanted to drink, Nick asked the family what they wanted for breakfast. "As you can see, I am cooking bacon." He then turns to Sara with a tease. "I guess that leaves you out, huh, or has the little one in there changed your diet?"
Sara shook her head with a smile. "Actually, like when I was pregnant with William, I haven't craved any meat, at least so far, so yes that leaves me out." She then smirked at her 'boys'. "But my boys are carnivores, so I guess you'll have to share your bacon."
She never pushed her vegetarianism onto her son, or Grissom for that matter, and while they did enjoy their meats, they were known to have just vegetarian meals at times.
Nick looked at Grissom and William, and they both nodded before William asked. "Do you have pancakes?"
Nick nodded with a smile. "I sure do, just let me get this bacon done first."
As William nodded one more time, Nick looked at Sara again. "So, what can I make for you?"
Sara shook her head. "Nick, you don't have..."
He cuts her off. "You are my guest, and I'll be happy to make you something, so what will it be?"
"You sure?"
While Nick nodded, Grissom replied with a smile. "A vegetarian omelet."
Sara looked at Grissom with a smile. "My husband knows me so well." Grissom just winks at her before Sara looked at Nick again. "If you really don't mind."
"I don't, now go sit and relax, breakfast will be done shortly."
Sara nodded while walking towards the kitchen table with her coffee cup.
Once Nick was done cooking the meals, he sat at the table to enjoy breakfast with the Grissom family, which William would not stop talking, so Sara had to softly remind her son to eat. But Nick just smiled while listening to the little guy, getting even more impressed that he is just like both of his parents. He might look more like Grissom, but there was already definitely some Sara in there as well.
As breakfast was coming to an end, Nick gets called away, so while he stands up with his plate, Grissom spoke. "Just leave it on the counter, we'll get the dishes."
Nick was going to protest but Sara spoke before he could. "It's the least we could do, you cooked breakfast. Now get out of here and go do your job Director Stokes."
While mostly what Nick does now is paperwork, he still likes to go to crime scenes, still wanting to get his hands 'dirty', so he does a couple of scenes a week.
Nick finally accepted the help and thanked them before he left the kitchen after placing the plate on the counter.
When Sara gets up with the rest of the empty plates, Grissom spoke while he grabbed the empty glasses. "I should tell him that his new title has a nice ring to it."
"Director Stokes?"
"Yeah."
Sara nodded in agreement. "He worked hard for that position."
"Yes, he did." He sets the glasses on the counter by the sink before moving behind Sara, wrapping his arms around her and kissed her cheek before asking softly. "So, what do you think, will there eventually be a Director Grissom?"
No hesitation from Sara, she shook her head with a smile. "Nah, I don't see that happening."
"Really?"
She nodded as she turned around in his arms and cupped his cheek, the smile still on her face. "At least for the foreseeable future. I still love going out in the field on a daily basis, and while my paperwork is more than it had been in the past, it's good as it is right now. However, if I'm still in the profession about 20 years from now, then I might decide to tone it down, but I'm not there yet."
He nodded in understanding, knowing that his wife loved the action outside of the lab more than paperwork, not that he blamed her of course, and she was going to be doing that part of the job for as long a physically possible, which he supports her to the fullest. He just wants her to be happy.
They share a sweet kiss before they finished up the dishes, then they got ready before leaving the house to go to the zoo.
After spending four hours at the zoo, which most of that time was spent in the insect/spider exhibit, only proving the point further that William was definitely his father's son, they finally left and headed back to Nick's to pick up Hank and to get something for lunch so they could enjoy a family picnic at the park.
Once William was done with his food, he played fetch with Hank for a bit before he was ready to go play on the play structure, Hank watching the little's boy's movements the whole time. So, for about 20 minutes William would change his mind from the swing to the slide and back again while Grissom and Sara would periodically watch with a smile as they tried to work out a crossword puzzle together.
Then out of nowhere a 'mommy!' scream filled the air from the parking lot, which got everyone's attention, especially Hank's and he started running towards the parking lot as two gunshots also filled the air before a vehicle sped away.
Grissom and Sara immediately stood up and Grissom started to speak, but Sara was already heading towards William's direction at the swing set as she spoke. "I'll stay with William. You go but be safe."
Grissom nodded and started rushing towards the parking lot, William yelling for his 'daddy' the whole time, not wanting anything to happen to him.
By the time Grissom made it to the parking lot there were a few people kneeled down, one of them presumably putting pressure on the wound of the person who was shot, while another one was on the phone with 911, then he heard Hank whining over by a few cars down the lot so he rushed over there and was shocked when he noticed who was petting Hank while he sat there, still whining. "Sadie?"
The now 11-year-old girl, who was scared with tears going down her cheeks, looked up at the sound of Grissom's voice. "Mr. Grissom?"
Already now having a sickening/strong feeling about the question before he asked it. "Your mom?"
Sadie sniffled. "She got shot, she's over there."
"Stay here, I'll be right back."
Sadie nodded as Hank moved closer to the little girl and looked at Grissom sadly. Grissom nodded at him before moving away from them and headed in the direction where there were now more people in the circle.
He walked through the group of people before kneeling down, silently gasping at the young woman who was on the ground, trying to fight for her life.
"Hailey."
She looked up with wide eyes, clearly in shock, but not sure if it was more on the fact of who she was seeing above her or what just happened to her. "Professor Grissom? My daughter."
She was trying to get up, but he placed his hand on her shoulder to keep her down while speaking softly. "She's ok, Hank is with her. Just try and lie still."
She groaned in pain while trying to keep her eyes open. "Tell her...I uh, tell her...I love her."
Grissom shook his head with a smile. "You are going to tell her yourself, you hear me, you are going to come out of this stronger than ever before, like everything else that has tried to knock you down in life." As she was coming in and out of consciousness, he continued to talk to her, until finally the ambulance came to get her, which when they left, they also took Sadie with them.
When Hank started whining while following the ambulance, Grissom spoke to him in a tone where he knows better. "Hank, stay."
He stayed and sat down but still whined as Grissom stood there in shock. He couldn't believe what just happened, then a moment later a phone started ringing.
He looked on the ground and it was a couple of feet from him, so he walked over to it, saw just the first name who was calling her before picking it up and answering it. "Hello?"
There was a pause then Grissom just got another surprise when he recognized the voice on the other Line. "Wait, Grissom? Is that you? How do you have Hailey's phone?"
Grissom cleared his throat before asking a question of his own. "Uh, Nicky, how do you know Hailey?"
