Lost Loves
Chapter 8
"So, you'll help me despite what Tom thinks of Christine?" Mike asked Sasha who stared into her coffee cup.
"I will but are you absolutely sure about this? You would be signing yourself up for raising these kids if we find them alive. To me, it would be wiser to heal your marriage first." Sasha asked.
"Perhaps so but…Christine is trying to act tough but she has always been an amazing mom. It was the one thing I couldn't fault her for. She is missing those babies…or kids now." Mike answered.
"You still love her?" Sasha asked.
"I suppose I do. I never wanted the divorce despite everything. The affairs I did have were more revenge. I despised myself after." Mike remarked.
"My question is; does she feel the same now or is it because you can offer her a home with her daughters, safety, and security? I just don't want you to be hurt later on." Sasha asked.
"I honestly don't think Christine has it in her to hurt me or anyone else now. She has been through hell." Mike answered.
"Just be careful, Mike. You are putting your heart on the line." Sasha warned as she stood up.
"Thanks, Cooper. For helping me and for your concern. I will be fine." Mike said.
"I'll call you with updates and for help." Sasha said before leaving.
Mike knew she was right. He needed to be careful. Christine could hurt him again. But she was so broken that he doubted it. He paid the ticket and headed home. As soon as he walked in; he smelled something delicious so he headed for the kitchen where he found Christine and Hannah.
"What am I smelling?" Mike asked. He kissed the top of Hannah's head and smiled at her.
"Applesauce cookies." Hannah answered before handing him a still-warm cookie. He took a bite and smiled.
"Its amazing." Mike said.
"Milk or coffee, Mike?" Christine asked.
"Milk. These are really good." Mike said as he sat down at the island with another cookie. Christine sit a glass of milk in front of him and noticed him massaging his shoulder which was really bothering him.
"What's wrong?" Christine asked.
"Oh, years ago; I was shot by the Immunes. The bullet was left in because it didn't hit anything vital and we didn't have the time for me to be out recovering. Now it bothers me. I suppose arthritis is setting in but I don't want to take the time to get the bullet out." Mike explained.
"What's the doctor say?" Christine asked.
"Oh, I don't tell them." Mike answered and Christine gave him a look.
"Mike…you should tell your doctor. What if that bullet moves around and hits something vital?" Christine lectured.
"I doubt that will happen. I'm really okay. Its not a big deal." Mike said.
"Daddy, we'll take care of you if that is what you're worried about." Hannah said.
"Thank you, sweetie. I'll think about it." Mike answered.
"Mike, please go see a doctor. We are all depending on you. I don't want something to happen." Christine begged. Mike was struck by the fact that her voice shook a little. It was an odd display of emotion because Christine tended to be stoic.
"I will see what I can do." Mike said.
"Please." Christine said again before turning away. Hannah just nodded at Mike before taking another pan of cookies out of the oven.
