The room was dark while Caroline rested on her left side and she could barely see Daryl lying on his back. She could sense he wanted to say something as she cleared her throat and he turned his head to look at her.

"Wanna hear the rest of it?" Caroline asked. He knew she was talking about Murphy and Connor and he rolled onto his right side to look at her.

"Yeah," he grumbled.

Boston

Caroline looked at the story in the newspaper. She had read the story several times. Her mind tried to comprehend what Connor and Murphy did as she sighed then she looked at the phone. She picked up the receiver when she dialed Rocco's phone number and she sat on the end of the desk.

"What!?" Rocco's voice shouted and she moved the receiver from her right ear.

"Rocco?" Caroline asked.

"Caroline?! Uh…."

"Caroline?! Give me th'phone," Murphy's voice said and she heard some soft voices before Murphy cleared his throat. "Hey."

"Mind tellin' me what's goin' on?" Caroline asked with a slightly angry voice.

"Ah. Well, I wanna tell you, but…"

"Give me th'phone," Connor's voice said and Caroline softly smiled. "Hey, Caroline."

"What is goin' on?" Caroline asked in a stern voice.

"Well… It's rather complicated."

"Where are you?"

"Rocco's."

"I'll be right there," she said as she placed the receiver on the phone cradle while Connor shouted for her not to hang up then she left the room.

Frank wasn't sure if he should let her take the car after she asked use it. She explained she was going to go see Murphy and he reluctantly agreed, giving her the keys.

A short time later, Caroline walked to the door to Rocco's apartment when she knocked on the door and she heard soft voices from behind the door. The door opened enough for her to look at Rocco and he gave her a small grin.

"Hey," Rocco said.

"Let me in, Rocco," Caroline said, glaring at him. He closed the door as she heard the chain being moved back and he opened the door wide enough to let her in. She walked by him as she scanned the room with her eyes then her eyes settled on Murphy. She walked to Murphy when she saw the small cut on his forehead and he stood still when she lowered his head to kiss the small scratch.

"Guess you're not mad at me," Murphy teased.

"No, I'm mad at you," she said then she looked at the bandages around Connor's wrists. Her mind replayed what Archie has said about the toilet being pulled out of the floor and the blood leading up to the roof and she walked to Connor. She gently took hold of his wrists while Connor gave her a sad look and he made a little sigh. "Son of a bitch."

"Look, why don't you guys go talk in the bedroom while I finish cleaning up?" Rocco asked.

"What do you have to clean up?"

"Just… Just something the cat did."

"Come on." Connor said and they walked to the bedroom.

"And that's when they told me what happened," Caroline said.

"So… They became what….? Vigilantes?" Daryl asked.

"Yeah."

"What happened next?"

"You're not gonna like it."

"Tell me."

Boston

"Caroline?" Connor asked.

"Say summat," Murphy said.

"Are you bullshittin' me?" Caroline asked.

"No."

"We're tellin' you th'truth," Connor said.

"But… But this sounds so…weird," Caroline said.

"Yeah, it does. But it doesn't mean it didn't happen."

They stood in silence when Murphy took hold of her hands and he was surprised that she didn't move her hands back.

"Is this the part of our romance movie where they break up?" Caroline whispered. Murphy thought for a second when he got what she was talking about and he sighed.

"I think so," Murphy said and she felt her heart cracking.

"Hold on! I got an idea!" Connor said.

"Oh no," Murphy said with a sigh.

"Shut it," he said then Connor looked at Caroline. "It's true that you two can't be together…."

"We know that."

"Let him talk," Caroline said.

"Thank you," Connor said then he looked at Murphy. "As I was sayin'… You can't be together, but it doesn't mean you have to end things."

"What do you want us t'do? Meet in secret?" Murphy asked.

"If you have to. You could sneak into our old place and…."

"That ain't gonna work. I have to stay with Frank until I can get back into my apartment," Caroline said.

"Do you know how long that will take?" Connor asked and she shook her head.

"Uh, sorry to interrupt," Rocco said as he walked in the room. "But I think she should get going."

"He's right," Connor said, looking at Caroline. "Wanna hear my other plan?"

"What other plan?" Murphy asked.

"She'll tell people you broke up."

"I can't lie, remember?" Caroline asked.

"She's right. She can't," Murphy said.

"Then don't say anythin'." Connor said.

"You mean act like I used to before I met you?" she asked.

"That's exactly what I'm sayin'."

Caroline nodded when she kissed Murphy and she slid her arms around his shoulders. He held her head in his hands as he deepened the kiss then they moved back. She headed out of the room when she left and she walked slowly down the hallway.

"What did you do?" Daryl asked.

"I acted like I did before I met them. When I didn't answer after Frank asked what was wrong, he assumed Murphy broke up with me. He was really pissed off and wanted to call Dad. I told him not to because Dad would wonder why Frank let me get involved with them in the first place. And he would make me move again," Caroline said.

"When was the next time you saw them?"

"Do you remember when we were in the subway car with those Walkers inside?"

"Yeah," Daryl said with a nod then he frowned as he remembered something. "You kinda faded out on me fer a few seconds."

"I was rememberin' somethin'."

"What were you rememberin'?"

Boston

The doors to the subway train car hissed open while Caroline walked inside and she looked at the people either sitting on the seats or standing, holding onto the straps on the ceiling.

"I thought Frank drove you home," Daryl said.

"He did, but this was when his car was in the shop," Caroline said. He heard the truth in her words and Caroline sighed, thinking about what happened next.

Boston

She found a seat as the subway train started moving and, a few minutes later, she noticed the two men standing in front of her. They were dressed all in black, but it was the black Navy pea coats which made her smile. She noticed the dark hair of one of the men and the light shimmered off their sunglasses.

"Stop starin' at us," the man with the light brown hair said softly in French.

"Sorry," she said softly in French as she sat up a little straighter. "I thought you were some friends of mine."

"Are they good friends?" the man with the dark hair asked in Italian.

"Very good friends," she answered in Italian.

They became silent as the subway train car moved and she looked down at her hands. She felt someone tap her left foot with their foot as she looked up and the man with dark hair smiled at her.

"I bet you miss them," he said in Spanish.

"I do," she said in Spanish.

"Would you believe me if I told you your friends miss you, too?" the light hair man asked in Latin.

"Yes," she said in Latin.

A short time later, the subway train car stopped as the doors hissed open and she watched the men head outside. She got up when she stepped out of the subway train car and she headed for the stairs leading up to the sidewalk.

That was when the world slowed down.

She watched the men heading toward the stairs at the other end of the platform when several men appeared from behind the columns holding up the ceiling and her eyes widened. She watched the men point their guns at the two men and she placed her back against the wall.

"Oh shit," Caroline whispered while her heart slammed in her chest.

The sound of gunfire caused people to start screaming and she watched the people running up the stairs. She looked around the corner and she was surprised that neither of the men were hit by the bullets

"Damn," she whispered when someone tugged on her arm and a man pointed to the stairs. She followed him up the stairs when she looked back down the stairs and the urge to go back down moved through her. The sounds of sirens filled the air as she watched people gather in small groups and she sighed. Quickly, she placed her hands in her pockets and she walked down the sidewalk.

"Why did you leave?" Daryl asked.

"I knew it was wrong. But Dad told me I had to keep a low profile. If I stayed, the police would have asked me questions and so would news reporters," Caroline explained.

"And if Jessie saw the news reports, or saw a photo of you in the papers, she would find out where you were."

"Right."

Daryl saw her closing her eyes as Caroline sighed and he watched her drift off to sleep. He tried not to be angry about her living in fear of Jessie back then as he rolled onto his back and he looked up at the ceiling. He closed his eyes as he tried to relax his mind and he placed his hands on his stomach. It took a long time for him to fall asleep as he rolled onto his right side and he flexed his fingers against the pillow.

The next morning, the cart headed down the road while Daryl held the reins in his hands and Caroline looked at the map. They had a nice breakfast at the inn and Caroline was able to get some extra ammunition and food at one of the shops.

"I didn't go home at first," she suddenly said and Daryl frowned.

"What?" he asked.

"After what happened at the subway station. I didn't go home. I walked 'round town then I went to a diner Murphy and I used to go to and had dinner," she explained then smiled. "When I got home, someone was waitin' fer me."

Boston

The doors to the elevator opened as Caroline walked out into the hallway then she stopped when she saw Murphy standing against the wall near the door to her apartment. She started walking toward him then she stopped when she saw the angry look on his face.

"Why were you ridin' th'subway?" he asked.

"Frank's car was in the shop," she said.

"Why didn't you run when th'gunfire started?" he asked, kicking off the wall and he walked to her.

"You saw me?" Caroline asked.

"Fer a split second, yeah."

"I dunno. I just couldn't move."

"You could've been killed!"

"Yeah."

Murphy pulled her into a hug as she placed her head against his right shoulder and he rocked her.

"What are you doin' here?" Caroline asked.

"I had t'make sure you were alright. After we were done, I went to th'motorcycle shop t'look fer you. Frank wasn't happy t'see me, but we did talk. He told me you were ok and you were able t'go home. He also told me not t'see you again."

"Oh."

"Look at me," he said and she looked at him. "I am not gonna do that."

She could see in his eyes that he was telling the truth when the doors of the elevator open and she turned. Connor walked out into the hallway then he stopped.

"There you are," Connor said, quickly walking to her.

"Sorry," Caroline whispered, turning to face him and he hugged her. She liked being in the middle of a MacManus sandwich and Connor sighed, rolling his eyes.

"Promise us you'll never do that again," he said as he wagged his left index finger at her.

"I promise."

"We went to my place and they explained that those guys shootin' at them were some drug dealers," Caroline said.

"Did you keep yer promise?" Daryl asked.

"Yeah."

"When was the next time you saw them?"

"It was just before they had to leave."

Boston

Caroline walked outside the motorcycle shop when she looked up at the dark sky and she sighed.

She hadn't heard or seen either Connor or Murphy in weeks.

She leaned against the wall of the motorcycle shop when she heard someone clear their throat and she looked to the right.

"Connor?" she whispered.

Connor looked beat up and upset and his hands were in the pockets of his black Navy pea coat.

"Follow me," he grumbled.

Caroline fell in beside him as they walked down the sidewalk and she noticed he looked upset about something. She slowed down a bit as she sighed and he led her into an alleyway. She could just see the dark car as Connor opened the back passenger door and he turned to look at her.

"Get in."

She got in the car then he closed the door and she watched him walk around to the driver side door.

"Duck down," he said after he opened the driver side door and she curled up on the seat. She listened to him start the engine as the car started moving and she wondered where they were going.

"Mind tellin' me what's goin' on?" Caroline asked.

"I will when we get t'where we're goin'," he said and she heard the growl in his voice.

"Are you ok?"

"As good as I can be."

"Where's Murphy?"

"He's somewhere safe."

She went silent as she tried to figure out what was going on and she heard him sigh.

"Sorry. It's been a rough couple of days," he said and she heard the pain in his voice. They became quiet while the car moved down the street and Caroline sighed, watching the streetlights moving by the window.

A short time later, the car came to a stop and Caroline snorted a breath of air. She wasn't sure when, but she had fallen asleep and she heard the passenger side door open. She felt Connor pulling her out of the car by her legs then he stood her on her feet and she wiped the sleep out of her eyes.

"Where are we?" Caroline asked.

"Somewhere safe," Connor said. She must have been shaking as he pulled her into a hug and he rocked her. "Let's go."

They walked toward the white brick building as they stopped in front of the door and he tapped his knuckles on the door. He paused for two seconds, tapped them again, paused then tapped them one last time. He glanced at her when the door barely opened and Connor locked fingers with her.

Caroline saw the hard, blue eyes of the older man standing just inside the door and she noticed his white hair peppered with black and gray hair. He was dressed all in black like Connor and he also wore a black Navy pea coat.

Something about the man sent a cold chill through her and Connor lightly squeezed her fingers.

"Open th'door," Connor said.

The man closed the door as she heard the sound of the chain being moved back then the man opened the door enough for them to move by them.

Caroline scanned the small room with her eyes when she saw Murphy on the bed and he was resting on his left side. He had his right hand pressed against his chest and he looked like he was in pain.

"What did you do to him?!" Caroline demanded as she glared at the man and Connor saw the anger in her eyes. She let go of Connor's hand when she stormed over to the bed, sat on the edge of the bed and Murphy looked at her with sadness in his eyes.

"What happened to Murphy's hand?" Daryl asked.

Daryl felt the pain and sadness coming from his sister and Caroline told them what Murphy and Connor told her.

"Why didn't they go to the hospital?"

"It was too dangerous," Caroline said.

Nodding, Daryl made the horse go faster while the cart headed down the road and Caroline looked at the map.

"Who was that guy they were with?" Daryl asked.

"It was their dad."

"Why was he actin' like an asshole?"

"He's not that bad."

"Guys like him never are."

Caroline felt like he was thinking about their birth father as she leaned over and she placed her left hand on his right shoulder. Daryl reached up to touch her hand as he lowered his head and sighed.

"Sorry," he grumbled as he let go of her hand and she patted his shoulder.

Boston

Caroline looked over at the man who let them in and he sat on the chair near the door.

"Who is he?" she asked Connor.

"This is our da," Connor said.

"Hello, Mister MacManus," she said, but the man just glared at her. She noticed the look he was giving Connor when Noah MacManus stood and headed for the door.

"Outside," Noah said, nodding his head to the door.

"If you have summat t'say, say it," Murphy grumbled then sat up so Caroline could sit next to him on the bed.

"Who is she?" Noah asked

"She is my girlfriend."

Caroline noticed the look of shock in Noah's eyes and a low growl filled the air.

"Yer girlfriend!?"

"Is that a problem?" Connor asked.

"Aye, it's a problem. Does she know what you've been doin'?"

"She knows some of it."

Caroline held on tighter to Murphy as Noah started pacing then he stopped in front of Connor.

"Take care of her," Noah said.

"What do you mean take care of her?!" Murphy asked as he tightened his hold on Caroline and she placed her head against his left shoulder.

"She's a liability."

"In what way?" Connor asked.

"If the police find out about her…"

"You really think she'd talk!?" Murphy asked.

"Yeah, I think she will."

"Bullshit!"

"What if one of yer enemies find out about her? Are you willin' t'risk her life?"

"Like you risked our lives!? Ma's life!?" Connor asked with a low growl and Caroline saw the hurt in Noah's eyes.

"That was different."

"How is it different!?" Murphy asked and she felt his body was tensing up.

"None of you were ever in any danger."

"That you know of," Connor said.

"Why would they think someone would put them and their mother in danger?" Daryl asked.

"Like Connor and Murphy, he was a vigilante," Caroline said and she told him about Noah.

"Damn," Daryl whispered when he saw some Macabre stumbling along the side of the road and he steered the cart down a side road. Caroline reached under the front seat when she removed the rifle and the box of ammunition and she checked to see if the rifle was loaded.

"You wanna do this?" she asked.

"Yeah," he said as she climbed over the driver's seat and he handed her the reins. She handed him the rifle while he headed for the back of the cart then he aimed the rifle at the Macabre. "Keep the cart steady."

"Right."

Daryl held the rifle in his hands while the Macabre headed for the cart and he took aim. One of the Macabre started running and Daryl moved his right index finger over the trigger. He fired the rifle as the head of the Macabre exploded and Daryl aimed the rifle at the next Macabre. He noticed the Macabre had a rock in its right hand and the Macabre threw the rock.

"Shit," Daryl said as he ducked and the rock hit the seat behind him. He felt the cart lurch forward as Caroline tried to control the horse and she held tightly onto the reins.

"What was that?!" Caroline called out.

"Damn thing threw a rock at him," Daryl said as he took aim, fired the rile and the head of the Macabre exploded.

"Shit."

Daryl reloaded the rifle as the Macabre followed the cart and he took aim. He fired the rifle twice as the heads of the Macabre exploded and he lowered the rifle.

"That the last of 'em?" Caroline asked.

"Yeah," Daryl said as he placed the rifle and the box of ammunition back in the box under the first seat then he sat down. "We still on track?"

"Yep," Caroline said when three Macabre appeared on the road and she sighed. "Well, we were."

Daryl felt the cart turning as Caroline steered the cart down the sideroad to their left and Daryl saw the Macabre moving by. Caroline made the horse go faster until they came to a stone bridge and she saw the bridge was wide enough for the cart to cross.

"Hang on."

Daryl held onto the seat as the cart quickly moved over the bridge and the cart bucked up and down. Daryl turned to see if the Macabre were following them and his eyes widened when he saw the Macabre hopped up and used the bridge railings to quickly walk across the bridge.

"Move!" Daryl called out and Caroline moved the reins to make the horse go faster. Daryl watched the Macabre while the Macabre jumped into the air and Daryl looked up at the top of the cart. He grabbed the backpack and the box under the first seat as he looked at the road and he sighed.

"Jump?" Caroline asked.

"Jump!" Daryl shouted and they jumped out of the cart. Both of them rolled on the ground while the horse and cart headed down the road with the Macabre on the top of the roof of the cart. One of the Macabre jumped onto the horse as the horse whickered and the horse ran off the road into the forest.

"Shit," Caroline said while Daryl helped her up and she bent down to pick up the backpack. Daryl removed the rifle from the box as he checked the rifle for damage then slid the strap over his right shoulder. Caroline placed the boxes of ammunition in the backpack then placed the backpack on her back and they looked back at the bridge.

"Think we have time to find a village before it gets dark?" Daryl asked.

"I think so," she said and they started walking down the road.

Alexandria

The carriage moved by the gate as Carol looked out the window and she frowned. The carriage came to a stop as the Commonwealth soldier hopped off the driver seat and he opened the door. Carol exited the carriage while Aaron walked closer and she smiled at him.

"Hello," Aaron said.

"Hello," Carol said and she gave him a hug.

"What brings you here?"

"I'm looking for Negan."

"Not sure if he's here."

Negan and his wife, Anne, settled in Alexandria after the Commonwealth fell, but Negan sometimes went on missions for her or Maggie.

"Are you looking for my husband?" Anne asked while she walked closer and she had their infant son, Carl, in her arms.

Negan had been a wreck during his son's delivery. They nearly didn't make it back to the Commonwealth and Anne joked how he threatened to pull the car over and deliver the baby himself.

"Yes," Carol said with a nod and she waved at Carl. "Is Negan here?"

"Yeah. Do you need him for something?" Anne asked and Carol nodded. Anne led her and the Commonwealth soldiers to their house as they went up the stairs and one of the soldiers opened the screen door for her. Anne opened the front door as they walked inside and Carol smelt the familiar smell of pasta sauce coming from the kitchen. "Negan, we got company."

"Hold on," Negan said as he turned the burner on the stove off then he walked out of the kitchen. He looked at Carol then at the soldiers and he frowned. "What's going on?"

"We've got news about Daryl and Caroline," Carol said and Negan saw the pain in her eyes.
