Kyo opened the door and walked in. There she was. Laying there in the hospital bed. She looked so frail. "Kyo…" she whispered. Kyo smiled slightly and closed the door, walking toward her. He sat by her bed.

"Hey, how are you feeling?" he asked. She smiled. "I am okay, I think." Kyo returned the smile for a moment and he focused on his hands on his legs. They were clenching the material of his jeans.

"I know that you just went through this terrible thing, but I wanted to talk to you about something. And I'm scared of how you will react." She looked at him, anxiety shooting through her. "Okay, what do you need to talk about?"

Kyo took a deep breath. "I am so sorry, Tohru." he said, his bangs covering his eyes. She looked at him with confusion. He looked at him, tears stinging his eyes. "I didn't save her." Tohru looked at him with confusion. "Who?" she asked.

A single tear fell, creating a dark spot on his pants. "Kyoko." Pain shot through Tohru. "What?" Kyo sighed and looked at her. "I didn't save her." Tohru sat up and looked at him. "You were there that day?"

Kyo nodded. "I was. I was there the day that she died, and I didn't save her." Tears fell from Tohru's eyes. "What do you mean? I don't understand."

Kyo took a deep breath. "I met Kyoko when I was a kid. I had just lost my mother and I was angry at the world. I hated everything and everyone around me. And I met her. And she made me feel less worthless."

"One day she showed me a picture of a little girl that she called her treasure. It was a picture of you." tears continued to fall from her eyes. "And that day you went missing, I promised her that I would find you and bring you home safe."

"Stuff happened and I never really talked to her after that day. And the day of the accident, I recognized her. She was standing there, waiting to cross. Then the car came around the corner. I went to grab her, but I hesitated. If I hugged her to me and she wrapped her arms around me I would transform in front of so many people."

"So I stood there and she was struck by the car. Everyone else was racing to save her life and I just stood there. I looked down and her blood was on my shoes. I slipped in it as I backed away from her and I ran."

Tears kept falling from Tohru's eyes. "But before I ran she looked at me and she said that she would never forgive me. I panicked and ran." Kyo's bangs were covering his eyes. He looked up at Tohru. Tears were streaming down her face.

"That's why you were acting strange when we were at the grave." Kyo nodded mutely. "I didn't know how I was supposed to tell you. But I thought that you should know." Tohru nodded. "Thank you for telling me." Kyo looked at her in shock.

'Is that all she's going to say?' Tohru reached and she took his hand. "I appreciate you telling me the truth. But I don't blame you for her death." Kyo looked at her with surprise. "What?" She smiled at him lovingly.

"I don't blame you for that day. I understand why you didn't think to grab her out of the way. And I understand that you were scared that day as well. If you would have transformed, who knows what would have happened. What happened to my mom is not your fault in any way. And I thank you for telling me the truth about it."

Kyo looked at her in shock and surprise. "You, don't hate me?" he asked. She smiled and shook her head. "Not at all." Kyo sighed in relief. "I don't know what I did to deserve you in my life." Tohru took his hand and squeezed it.

"Kyo, about what happened at the beach." he looked at her, his heart racing. Tohru looked at her knees. "I know that you are disappointed in me, but I want you to know the truth about how I feel about you."

Kyo stayed silent. "I love you Kyo Sohma. I've loved you since the day I saw your true form. And I hate that I've disappointed you. And I understand that you don't feel the same way, and I hope that we can remain friends-"

Kyo leaned in and kissed her. She couldn't believe it. After everything that happened he was kissing her. And she was so happy. Kyo backed away from her and they looked at each other. "I was completely selfish that night at the beach."

"I trampled over your feelings and I completely ignored what you were feeling. But I wanted to tell you that the reason that I did that is because I don't feel like I deserve to be loved by anyone. Especially you." Tohru shook her head.

She took Kyo's hand. "You do deserve to be loved. You deserve to be happy. Whether or not that you're the cat. You deserve to be happy, Kyo. And like I told Akito, I will protect you and the others from what she wants. You all deserve to be happy and free."

"And as long as I breathe, I will fight for you. I never want you to be in that cell. It was lonely. And scary." Kyo took her hand and he looked at her. "I dont want you to be in danger because of me."

Tohru looked at him. "I think it's more dangerous for us to be apart. Please dont leave me again." Kyo shook his head and caressed her cheek. "I'm not going anywhere, Tohru." Tears streamed down her face and she leaned into his hand.

"I love you, Kyo." She said lowly, leaning more into his hand. He put his forehead to hers. "And I love you." he whispered in her ear.
