The next morning, Caroline stood at the base of the Tower as she looked up and Aramis walked to her.

"Hello," he said in French.

"Hello," she said in French then looked at the Tower and the wall. "Why were the walls built around the tower?"

"To protect it and to prevent the Macabre from taking it over.

"How were they built?"

"The walls were built one section at a time and the higher levels were brought up on scaffolding or cranes."

"How did they prevent the Macabre from climbing the scaffolding?"

"Snipers."

"How were the pikes installed?"

"Very carefully," he said in French and they laughed.

"Why weren't walls placed around the other landmarks?" she asked in French.

"There wasn't time."

Caroline heard the sadness in his voice as she nodded and Daryl walked over to her.

"Ready to go?" Daryl asked.

"We need to sell some stuff first," Caroline reminded him and Daryl nodded.

"Is there something wrong?" Aramis asked in French. Caroline explained as he nodded and crossed his arms over his chest. "I do know someone who will buy the rifle, ammunition and the wine."

"He said he knows someone who will buy our stuff," she told Daryl.

"Do you have a map?"

"Yes," she said in French and she headed for the cart. She opened the backpack when she removed the map, hopped off the cart and headed back to Daryl and Aramis. She showed Aramis the map as he used a pencil he had in the pocket of his vest and he circled a place on the map. He handed her the map as she nodded then Aramis walked away.

"You think we can trust him?" Daryl asked, looking at the map.

"Not sure," she said as Armond ran to them and he smiled up at Daryl.

"Mister Daryl, do you wanna go hunting scrap with me and my friends?" he asked in French.

"He wants to know if you wanna go scrap huntin' with him," Caroline translated.

"Please?!"

Daryl saw the same look in Armond's eyes which he saw in RJ's eyes when RJ wanted to go look for things and Daryl softly smiled.

"Did yer mama say it was ok?" Daryl asked.

"Did yer mama say it was alright for you to go and for Mister Daryl to go with you?' Caroline translated.

"Uh….," Armond said in French then looked down.

"Go ask her."

Armond ran off as Daryl shook his head and Caroline softly laughed.

"Kids," Daryl grumbled.

"Yeah," Caroline said.

"After we sell our stuff, we still need to find someone who can get us home?"

"We could ask around."

Daryl nodded while Armond and some of his friends ran to them then stopped in front of him and Caroline.

"Mama said she wants Mister Daryl to go with us," Armond said in French and Caroline looked at Elisbeth. Elisbeth nodded her head as Caroline nodded back and Daryl looked at the children. "You, too, Miss Caroline."

"If we do this, you have to listen to everythin' I say," Daryl said and Caroline translated.

"Yes, Sir!" the children said in French as they saluted and Caroline lightly nudged Daryl, who was trying not to laugh. They headed for the cart as Caroline helped the children into the cart and Aramis walked to the cart. Daryl noticed Aramis had two crossbows loaded with crossbow bolts and Daryl's eyes slightly widened.

"I thought you would need these," Aramis said in French and Daryl took the crossbows from him.

"Thank you," Caroline said in French. Nodding, Aramis walked away and Caroline and Daryl got onto the cart. Daryl took hold of the reins as he moved the reins and the horse headed for the large iron doors. The large, iron doors opened as the cart moved outside and Armond climbed onto the driver's seat. He sat next to Daryl as the cart went down the road and Armond pointed to the left. Daryl steered the cart down the road while Armond pointed to where they needed to go and Daryl stopped the cart.

"Stay together," Daryl said as the children got off the cart and he saw some of them had knives in holders on their belts. They headed for the rubble of what used to be a store and he held up his right hand to stop them. They walked by the rubble then stopped so he could check to see if there were any Macabre then he nodded. Caroline helped some of the children search through the rubble when they found some usable tools, some clothes and boots and boxes of rifle ammunition.

"Mister Daryl!" Armond called out in French and Daryl saw him standing near a doorway. The room was dark and Daryl saw Armond was shaking.

"Move back slowly," Caroline said in French. Armond slowly moved back while Daryl walked by him and Daryl removed the small flashlight from the pocket of the denim jacket. He pushed the button as the light shimmered into the darkness and Daryl shined the light around the room. A low gurgling sound came from the darkness and a male Macabre walked into the light.

"Macabre!" one of the girls shouted in French and Caroline hushed her.

Daryl rolled his eyes as he handed Armond the flashlight then took hold of the crossbow.

The male Macabre had blonde hair and the right side of his mouth had been torn off. Dried blood stained his white shirt and black leather vest and he was missing his right forearm. His jeans were torn and he was missing one of his shoes.

Daryl took aim as the Macabre moved closer and the Macabre swung at him. Daryl ducked while Armond ran to Caroline and she held the crossbow in her hands. Daryl fired the crossbow and the crossbow bolt slammed into the head of the Macabre. The body fell to the ground when he heard some more growling and two more Macabre headed out of the room. Daryl and Caroline fired the crossbows and the crossbow bolts slammed into the heads of the Macabre. The bodies fell while Daryl removed the crossbow bolts and they cleaned off the crossbow bolts.

Before the children could start cheering, Daryl placed his right index finger to his lips and the children nodded their heads. They searched the rest of the store then walked back to the cart and Daryl helped the children put what they found in the back of the cart. The children and Caroline got on the cart as Daryl scanned the area with his eyes then he got onto the driver's seat. He took the reins in his hands as he moved the reins and the horse headed down the road.

The Commonwealth

Carol walked down the hallway with two Commonwealth soldiers behind her and she looked straight ahead. They stopped at the cell door when she walked to the cell bars and Hornsby looked at her with a pleased look on his face.

"Hello, Carol," Lance said.

"Hello," Carol said.

"Has there been any word on Dixon and his sister?"

Carol had gone to tell Hornsby about what had happened to Daryl and Caroline and she glanced down at her feet.

"No. They're still missing," she said and he noticed the hard look on her face. "I did find out something about you."

"Me?!" he asked while his eyes widened.

"It turns out you did know Captain Trask."

Hornsby gave her an amused look and he lightly shook his head.

"Fine," he said with a sigh. "I do know the man. He was a big help when it came to getting certain things."

"Or for getting rid of certain things."

"Maybe."

"Lance…."

"Do you think I would get rid of your boyfriend and his sister just because he held a knife to my throat?"

"Yes."

Hornsby looked annoyed as he started pacing the cell then he walked to the cell bars.

"If I wanted to get revenge, why would I wait a year?" he asked.

"To throw off suspicion," she said and he smiled.

"Got me there. But why ship them off somewhere? Why not just kill them?"

"They could have been killed onboard the ship and dumped overboard."

Hornsby blinked his eyes a few times as a shocked look moved across his face and he sighed.

"You are one cold hearted bitch," he said with a small laugh. "You remind me of Pamela."

"I am nothing like her."

Hornsby nodded as he started pacing the cell again then he stopped in front of the cell bars.

"You do know about the outposts, but what you didn't know is Pamela also sent people away to help her "friends"," he said and she frowned.

"Friends?"

"Friends. Business associates. People she owed favors to or they owed her a favor."

"Did the people she sent ever come back?"

"What do you think?" he asked with an annoyed look.

"Are you saying she was going to send Daryl and Caroline to their deaths?"

"Yes. Why? I have no idea."

Carol thought for a few seconds then she walked down the hallway. The Commonwealth soldiers followed her when she stopped at the cell door to Pamela's cell and the soldier opened the door. She looked at Pamela as Pamela frowned and Carol walked in the cell.

"What do you want?" Pamela asked.

"I finally know why my friends were taken. You sent them to one of your friends," Carol said.

"My friends?"

"Someone who owes you a favor or asked you for help."

Pamela kept her face blank, but Carol did notice Pamela's eyes slightly moving and Carol walked closer.

"Where did you send them?" Carol asked with a small growl.

"I have no idea what you're talking about," Pamela said.

Carol flexed her fingers as she resisted to remove the knife from the holder on her belt. Pamela locked eyes with her when Carol turned, headed for the cell doorway and she left the cell. Carol slammed the cell door as she headed down the hallway and the Commonwealth soldiers followed her.

Paris – The Eiffel Tower

The iron doors closed while the cart headed for the Tower and Armond had the reins in his hands. Daryl sat next to him as Armond smiled up at him and Daryl pointed to a spot where he could stop the cart. Armond handed him the reins as Daryl stopped the horse and Elisbeth walked to the cart.

"Did you have fun?" she asked Armond in French.

"Yes, Mama. We even saw some Macabre," Armond said in French.

"You did?!"

"Yes, but Mister Daryl and Miss Caroline killed 'em."

Elisbeth smiled as she helped Armond off the cart and the other children got off the cart. Caroline handed the children the supplies and Daryl hopped off of the driver's seat. He went to help Caroline remove the chairs and small table they had found while Aramis walked to the cart.

"Ah, those looks to be in excellent condition!" Aramis said in French and Caroline nodded.

"Grandpapa, we saw Macabre!" Armond said in French with a grin.

"You did?!"

"Uh-hunh. Mister Daryl and Miss Caroline killed them."

"I see," Aramis said in French as he looked at Daryl and Caroline.

Daryl started feeling a little uncomfortable as he glanced at Caroline and she started feeling the same uncomfortable feeling. Daryl lightly nodded with his head toward the Tower and she followed as he started walking away. They stopped at the leg of the base of the Tower and Daryl leaned against one of the metal beams.

"Why do I have a feelin' they want us to stay?" Daryl grumbled while looking at Armond and Aramis.

"I think you're right," Caroline said.

"Do you wanna stay?"

"No. Do you?"

Suddenly, something wet hit the top of Daryl's head as he reached up and he removed some wet garbage from his hair.

"What the hell?" he asked as he looked up and he saw Jac and some of his friends sitting on the metal beams above them.

"Hey!" Caroline called out in French then ducked when one of the young men tossed wet garbage at her. She dived out of the way as the young men tossed more wet garbage at them and Daryl grabbed hold of Caroline's right hand. They started running as they headed for the cart and Daryl helped her into the cart.

"Mister Daryl, where are you going?!" Armond asked in French as Daryl climbed onto the driver's seat and he took hold of the reins.

"We're leavin'," Caroline said in French and Armond's lower lip quivered. He ran to Aramis while Daryl pulled on the reins and the horse started moving.

"Wait!" Aramis called out in French and Caroline lightly tapped Daryl's back. Daryl stopped the horse and Aramis ran to the cart. "What happened?!"

He noticed the wet garbage in Daryl's hair and a soft sour odor came from them. He glanced over at the Tower when he saw Jac and his friends running into the shadows and Aramis frowned, placing his hands on his hips.

"I do apologize," Aramis said in French.

"Yeah," Daryl grumbled, picking the rest of the wet garbage out of his hair.

"Thank you for lettin' us stay," Caroline said in French. Aramis nodded as he stood back and Daryl pulled on the reins. The horses headed for the large, iron doors as the large, iron doors opened and the cart moved outside.

Caroline felt the guilt coming from her brother as the cart headed down the road and she climbed over the driver's seat to sit next to him. They sat in silence while the cart headed down the road and Caroline leaned against Daryl's upper right arm.

"Where are we supposed to go to sell our stuff?" Daryl asked and she sat up. Caroline climbed over the driver's seat when she opened the backpack and she removed the map. She opened the map while she looked at the place Aramis marked on the map and she moved her right index finger along the map.

"Go straight ahead fer four blocks, turn left, go down three blocks and it's on the right," Caroline said, folding the map then she placed the map in the backpack. The cart moved down the road while people moved along the sidewalks and Caroline noticed a few Macabre moving in an alleyway or two.

A short time later, Daryl stopped the cart as he hopped off the driver's seat and he tied the reins to the hitching post. Caroline had removed the bottle of wine and the rifle from the box under the front seat as she got out of the cart and she stood next to Daryl.

"Where are we supposed to go?" Daryl asked while he looked at the buildings.

"I think it's that shop over there," Caroline said as she pointed to the brown brick building with black trim and they headed for the door. Daryl had the crossbow strapped to his back and Caroline had the strap of the rifle over her right shoulder and the bottle of wine in her left hand. Daryl was about to open the door when he thought he saw something moving behind the dark glass and they looked at each other. Daryl thumped his fist on the dark glass window in the door. He thumped on the dark glass again when something slammed against the dark glass and Daryl and Caroline backed up. "Shit."

Daryl moved to the shop window as he looked at the dark glass and he thumped his fist on the dark glass. He waited then thumped his fist again and something slammed against the dark glass. He moved to the other shop window when something moved in the alleyway and he motioned with his hands for her to stay. He moved the crossbow in his hands as he headed into the alleyway and he saw overturned trash cans, a dumpster near the wall and the doors to the stores. He walked out of the alleyway as he signaled for her to follow him and Caroline headed into the alleyway.

Daryl led the way while they headed down the hallway and Caroline pointed to the opened door. Daryl held the crossbows in his hands as Daryl walked to the door and he glanced inside the dark room. He opened the door some more as they headed inside and, after putting the wine bottle on the ground, Caroline reached along the wall for the light switch. She flicked the switch up then picked up the wine bottle as the lights flickered on and they saw they were in a storeroom. Daryl saw the door into the store was open as they walked in the main part of the store. Daryl pointed for Caroline to go left as he went down the right side of the store and they scanned their surroundings with their eyes.

Daryl stopped at the end of the aisle when he saw several of the Macabre on the floor and he looked to see Caroline standing at the end of the other aisle. They slowly walked to the Macabre when the lights flickered on and they quickly turned, holding the crossbows in their hands.

"What the hell?" Daryl grumbled.

Standing in front of them were two people dressed in black body armor, black boots and black riot helmets. In their hands were guns with silencers and Caroline saw six more guns strapped to the front of the body armor.

"I think we found who killed those Macabre," Caroline whispered.

"Yeah," Daryl whispered.

The person on the right walked closer as they put one of the guns in the holsters on the belt on their hips and the person stood in front of Daryl. Daryl had pointed the crossbow at them as he flexed his right index finger over the trigger and he lightly licked his lips.

The person on the left walked to Caroline as she placed the wine bottle on the shelf, slid the rifle in her hands and pointed the rifle at the person in front of her.

"Do you speak English?" Caroline asked in French.

The people looked at each other when they turned and Caroline and Daryl watched them running out of the room. Daryl sighed while Caroline picked up the bottle of wine off the shelf and he and Caroline chased after them. Running outside the store into the alleyway, they looked left then right, but whoever was in the store was gone.

"Where did they go?" Caroline asked.

"Dunno," Daryl said and they headed down the alleyway. They didn't notice they were being watched by the people they met in the store while they stood on the fire escape. After Daryl and Caroline left the alleyway, the people hopped off the fire escape, landed on the dumpster, hopped down and they ran the other way down the alleyway.

Notre-Dame Cathedral

The cart came to a stop at the bottom of the stairs as Daryl hopped off of the driver's seat and Caroline got out of the cart. They watched while two men in black body armor and black boots walked down the stairs and the men had rifles pointed at them.

"Stay where you are," the first man said in French.

"Wait," Caroline said in French and held her hands up. "We mean you no harm. We are lookin' fer somewhere to spend the night."

"We don't have any room," the second man said in French.

"But this is a church."

"We don't have any room."

"Let's go," Daryl said and Caroline nodded. They headed back to the cart when a siren started blaring and Daryl held onto the reins after the horse started whickering and pulling on the reins.

"Macabre!" someone shouted in French and Caroline saw the other people heading into the church.

"Are you gonna let us in or are you gonna leave us out here to die?" Caroline asked in French. The men looked at each other when the first man signaled for them to follow them and Daryl and Caroline slid the crossbows into their hands. Daryl watched as a swarm of Macabre headed down the sidewalk and a few of the Macabre were doing handsprings.

"You gotta be kiddin'," he grumbled.

"Move!" Caroline said and they ran up the stairs. The large doors opened while people ran inside and Caroline and Daryl took the rear to make sure everyone got in safely. The men waved for them to go inside and Daryl and Caroline ran by them as the men closed the doors. One of the men pushed the buttons on the panel near the door and metal screens slid down in front of the doors. More metal screens slid down in front of the stain glass windows and the lights flickered on.

"This way," the first man said in French. Daryl and Caroline followed him while they walked across the glossy tile flooring and Caroline looked up at the ceiling.

"Where are we?" Daryl whispered.

"Not sure, but I think this is the Notre Dame Cathedral," Caroline whispered.

Daryl nodded while he looked at the people near the man-made huts and shacks and the sound of children's crying filled the air.

"Come," the first man said in French as they headed for a door and the man opened the door. They walked down a long hallway when they came to a doorway and Caroline and Daryl saw the beds, medical equipment, storage cabinets and medicine cabinets. The man led them to a tall woman with long brown hair and blue eyes and she was wearing jeans, a white shirt, sneakers and a doctor's coat. "Doctor, we have visitors."

The woman looked at Caroline and Daryl as she frowned and she walked to them.

"Hello," the woman said in French.

"Hello. Do you speak English?" Caroline asked in French.

"Yes, I do," the woman said as she switched to English. "Who are you?"

"I'm Caroline. Daryl," she said as she pointed to her then to Daryl and the woman looked from her to Daryl.

"I'm Katherine. What brings you to Notre Dame?"

"We're travelin'."

Katherine gave Caroline a doubting look as Katherine sighed then she placed her hands on her hips.

"We don't normally allow strangers here, but, seeing that we're in the middle of a swarm, I'll allow it," Katherine said.

"You run this place?" Daryl asked.

"No. Just the hospital."

"Why were we brought here?" Caroline asked.

"It's procedure. All strangers are to be examined before they are allowed to interact with the others."

Caroline and Daryl looked at each other as they had a silent conversation then they looked at her.

"I need to show you somethin'," Caroline said as she removed the leather fingerless glove off her right hand and she showed Katherine the scars on the back of her right hand and wrist. "Before you ask, no, these are not Walker scratches. This happened before the world fell apart."

"Walkers?" Katherine asked.

"Macabre."

"Well, thank you for telling me," Katherine said then she looked at Daryl while Caroline put on the leather fingerless glove. "Would you like to be examined first?"

"Sure," Daryl said with a nod. They walked to the bed as Daryl sat on the bed, removed his work boots and he placed the work boots on the floor. Katherine pointed for him to remove the denim jacket, the leather vest with the wings on the back and the blue shirt and Daryl got undressed. Katherine went to get some medical equipment then she examined Daryl and she noticed the scars on Daryl's back. "They're old."

"What?" Katherine asked.

"The scars. They're not from Walkers. They're from before the world went to shit or from bein' in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Nodding, Katherine finished her examination and Daryl lightly moved his legs back and forth.

After she examined Caroline, Katherine went to put the medical equipment away and Caroline finished getting dressed.

"Follow me," Katherine said and they followed her out the room. The men followed them as Katherine led them to where the other man-made huts and shacks were and she pointed to one of the shacks. They watched the men and Katherine walk away then Caroline moved the blanket covering the doorway and they went inside the shack.
