Carol sat at the desk while she looked through the files when she closed the files and sat back in the chair. Someone knocking on the door made her stand as she walked around to the front of the desk and she slid the letter opener into her right hand.

"Who is it?" Carol asked.

"It's Max," Max' voice said from behind the door.

"Come in."

The door opened as Max walked in the room and Carol placed the letter opener on the desk.

"What can I do for you?" Carol asked as she headed for the small table with the coffee pot, coffee mugs and some sweetener. "Coffee?"

"No thanks. I'm nursing."

Carol watched Max sit on the chair in front of the desk and Carol went around the desk to sit on her chair.

"What can I do for you?" Carol asked.

"It's more like what I can do for you," Max said.

"Are you saying you remember something about Trask?"

"No, but I do remember this time I walked in on the Governor and she looked upset."

"What was she upset about?"

"Not sure, but she was mumbling 'Why now?'."

"Why now?"

"Yes. When I asked her what was wrong, she said she had a request for help."

"What sort of help?"

"She said someone she knew needed some soldiers, but she couldn't spare anyone."

"Did she say where the soldiers were going?"

"No. But I did find the request on her desk after she left. The location was somewhere in Europe."

"Europe?"

"Yes."

Carol blinked her eyes a few times as she wondered if Trask had taken Daryl and Caroline to Europe and the idea them being so far away caused a knot to form in her stomach.

"Are you alright?" Max asked.

"Yes," Carol said with a nod.

"I'm sorry if I upset you."

"No. In fact, you've been very helpful."

Nodding, Max stood as Carol watched her walk to the doorway and Max left the room. She closed the door while Carol turned the chair around to look out the window and Carol sighed. Getting up, Carol walked to the filing cabinet as she opened the drawer and she removed the file she had made about Trask. She opened the file when she flipped through the pages then she saw the last place Trask had traveled to.

"France?!" she whispered and she closed the file.

Paris – Notre-Dame Cathedral

Daryl listened to Caroline's soft breathing as he looked up at the ceiling and he had his hands behind his head. He looked toward the blanket covering the doorway when he sat up, placed on his work boots and he headed for the blanket. He moved the blanket back as he walked outside and he looked at the other man-made shacks and houses. The lights were dimly lit and he could see some men patrolling the upper landings. He reached in the pocket of the denim jacket as he went to remove the pack of cigarettes when he remembered he had smoked the last cigarette a few days ago.

"Shit," he grumbled then he went back in the man-made shack as the blanket slid shut behind him.

In the morning, Daryl and Caroline joined the other people at a large, dark wood table and some of the women served breakfast. Caroline and Daryl looked at the food on their plates and the mugs of coffee and they started eating.

"What's this?" Daryl asked while looking at the crepe.

"Looks like a really thin pancake," Caroline said, poking the crepe with a fork. She placed some fresh cream and some berries on the crepe then she folded the crepe. She cut the crepe with the knife and fork and she placed the piece of crepe in her mouth. Daryl watched her eat then smile and he placed some of the fresh cream and berries on the crepe. He cut into the crepe as he placed the piece of the crepe in his mouth and he chewed.

"Not bad," Daryl said after he swallowed.

"I bet Carol could make these."

She saw the pained look on his face as she sighed and Daryl placed the fork on the plate.

"Hey," he said and she looked at him. "It's ok. I was thinkin' the same thing."

Nodding, Caroline went back to eating while Katherine walked to the table and Daryl looked at her.

"Good morning," Katherine said.

"Mornin'," Daryl said.

"Mornin'," Caroline said.

"Did you sleep well?" Katherine asked.

"Yeah," Daryl said with a nod.

"Are the Macabre gone?" Caroline asked.

"Yes, they're gone," Katherine said then she looked up at the upper landings.

"Somethin' wrong?" Daryl asked.

"I have some bad news."

"What sort of bad news?" Caroline asked.

"It appears the Macabre killed and ate your horse."

Caroline and Daryl looked at each other while Caroline sighed and Daryl took a long drink of coffee.

"Do you have a car or truck you can loan us?" Daryl asked.

"We do, but we don't give them to strangers."

"Great," Caroline said with a sigh.

"There is something else I need to tell you," Katherine said and Daryl placed his forearms on the edge of the table. ""Your cart was robbed during the swarm, but we were able to capture the thieves."

"Where are they?" Daryl asked.

"Follow me."

Daryl and Caroline stood as they followed Katherine toward one of the side doors and the guards opened the doors. They headed outside into a courtyard while Daryl squinted his eyes and shaded his eyes with his right hand. They walked by the flowerbeds and trimmed bushes when they stopped at a large circular area and the guards were standing next to four young men, who were kneeling on the ground.

"Those are the guys who stole our stuff?" Daryl asked.

"Yes," Katherine said and Daryl walked to the four young men. He looked from one to the other as the young men looked down and Caroline walked to stand next to her brother.

"Why did you steal from us?" Caroline asked in French.

"We didn't steal from you! We brought your things inside!" one of the young men said in French.

"Where did you put our stuff?"

"We put them in Storage Room Five!"

"Did you check the storage rooms?" Caroline asked Katherine.

"Not yet," Katherine said.

"Why would they check the storage rooms?" Daryl asked.

"They said that's where they put our stuff," Caroline explained.

"Let's go."

"I am afraid you need permission to check the storage rooms," Katherine said.

"Who do we have to ask?" Caroline asked.

"You have to ask Cardinal."

"Takes us to this Cardinal then," Daryl said.

Katherine looked at the young men then at Caroline and Daryl and she nodded. Daryl and Caroline followed her back into the cathedral as they headed down the hallway then they headed up the staircase to their left. They went up another staircase and down a hallway as Caroline and Daryl looked at the marble statues standing in the small alcoves then they stopped at a door with a female guard standing in front of the door.

"We need to see Cardinal," Katherine said in French to the female guard. The female guard looked at Daryl and Caroline when she opened the door then she slid inside the room. She closed the door as Caroline and Daryl looked at Katherine and Katherine looked at the door.

"Who is Cardinal?" Caroline asked.

"He is our leader," Katherine said.

"How long's he been in charge?" Daryl asked.

"Only for the last two years."

"Sounds like you know him pretty well," Caroline said.

"We've known each other since the world fell. Met in Philadelphia."

"So, you're from America."

"Yes. You are, too, aren't you?"

"Yeah," Daryl said with a nod.

"How did you end up here?"

"That's a long story," Caroline said as the door opened and the female guard walked out into the hallway.

"He will see you now," the female guard said in French and she stood back into the room.

Daryl and Caroline followed Katherine in the office as Daryl saw the large, stain glass windows at the back of the room and the sunlight cast the colors of the stain glass on the hard wood flooring. Bookcases were to either side of the room and two hard wood chairs sat in front of the large, dark wood desk. A black leather desk chair was behind the desk and landscape painting were above the dark wood tables on either side of the door. Two wooden crosses were on the tables and a red carpet was under the chairs in front of the desk. The ceiling lamps were embedded on the ceiling and a smaller bookcase was under the stain glass windows.

Standing near the desk was a man in red robe with a hood and he had tan leather sandals on his feet. He also wore red gloves and a black cord was tied around his waist. Daryl noticed he was an inch taller than he was, but something about him sent out red flags.

"Cardinal," Katherine said in Latin after she walked to him and Cardinal looked from her to Daryl and Caroline. Daryl moved Caroline behind him as Cardinal walked to them then stopped and Daryl could barely see Cardinal's face due to the hood being pulled down to the tip of Cardinal's nose. Cardinal had a full beard of light brown hair with white, gray and silver hair mixed in and long, light brown hair with white and silver hair was sticking out from under the hood. "These are the strangers who arrived yesterday."

Cardinal placed his hands in front of him while Daryl flexed his fingers then Cardinal tried to move toward Caroline, but Daryl shifted his position so he couldn't get closer.

"Please move," Katherine said.

"No," Daryl said.

"Daryl….," Caroline said and he turned to look back at her. Something in her eyes made him move so she could walk to Cardinal and Cardinal lifted the hood enough for her to see his face. Caroline locked eyes with Cardinal and she stood a little straighter. Cardinal scanned her with his eyes when he looked at Daryl and Cardinal tilted his head to one side. Cardinal walked back to Katherine when he whispered something to her in Latin and she looked at Caroline and Daryl.

"Are you two siblings?" Katherine asked.

"Yeah," Daryl said.

Cardinal walked back to them when he looked at Caroline and he pointed at her right hand. She glanced at her right hand when he nodded his head and she lifted her right hand. Cardinal took hold of her right hand then used his thumb to move the edge of the leather fingerless glove to expose her wrist and some of the back of her hand and he looked at the scars. He lowered her hand when Cardinal noticed the leather cord around her neck and he pointed to the leather cord. Caroline slid the leather cord out from under her shirt as she showed him the weather-worn wooden cross and the light shimmered dimly on the tarnished silver circle.

Daryl saw Cardinal's eyes slightly widened as Cardinal cautiously took the weather-worn wooden cross in his left hand and he looked at the tarnished silver circle. Cardinal let go of the weather-worn wooden cross when he walked to Katherine and he whispered something to her in Latin.

"Wait here," Katherine said. They watched her head for the door as she left the room and Cardinal went to sit at the desk. Caroline and Daryl glanced at each other then Caroline walked to the desk and she placed the palms of her hands on the desk as she slightly leaned forward.

"It's not polite to stare," Cardinal said in Latin.

Caroline wasn't sure, but something about his voice seemed familiar and she titled her head to one side.

"Sorry. You remind me of an old friend," Caroline said in Latin. She thought his eyes widened slightly and Cardinal placed his forearms on the desk.

"An old friend?" he asked in Spanish.

"Well, more like older," she said in Spanish with a small smile.

"How long has it been since you've seen your friend?" he asked in Russian.

"A very long time," she said in Russian.

"How did you injure your hand?" he asked in Italian and she looked at her right hand.

"My crazy adopted mother used a meat hammer on it," she said in Italian and Daryl walked to stand next to her.

"What're you doin'?" Daryl asked.

"Just talkin'," Caroline said and Cardinal looked at Daryl.

"Is he really your brother?" Cardinal asked in French as he looked at her.

"Yes," she said in French.

"What did he say?" Daryl asked.

"He asked if you're my brother," Caroline explained as the door opened and they turned to see who entered the room. Standing in the doorway was a man wearing a black robe with a hood and he had tan leather sandals on his feet. He also wore black gloves and a black cord was tied around his waist.

"Bishop, come here and say hello to our guests," Cardinal said in Latin. They watched as Bishop headed toward them and Daryl noticed Bishop was his height, but Bishop kept his head down. Katherine was walking behind Bishop when Bishop stopped in front of Daryl and Caroline and Bishop slightly lifted his head. He looked at Daryl then at Caroline and Caroline could just see the long dark hair with silver, white and gray mixed in sticking out from under the hood and the full beard.

"Hello," Caroline said in French, but Bishop just stared at her.

"What's wrong with him?" Daryl asked.

"Bishop?" Cardinal asked in Latin as he got up, walked around to the front of the desk, walked to him and Bishop looked at Caroline's right hand. Bishop reached out with his right hand as Caroline looked at her right hand then slowly lifted her right hand. He took hold of her hand when he used his thumb to lift the edge of the leather, fingerless glove and he saw the scars on Caroline's wrist and the back of her hand.

"How….? How did this happen?" Bishop asked softly in German.

"My crazy adopted mother hit me with a meat hammer," Caroline said softly in German. She felt his hand shanking. Caroline moved her hand away while he lifted his head so she could see his face and she looked into a pair of teary, blue eyes. She moved closer when she brushed the tears from his eyes with the pads of her thumbs and he made a staggered sigh.

"Do you wanna sit down?" she asked in French.

"I think I should," he said in French.

She helped Bishop sit down on the chair while she knelt down on her haunches and Daryl gave her a confused look.

"Is he ok?" Daryl asked and Bishop looked at him then he looked at Caroline.

"You…? You found your family?" Bishop asked softly in Spanish.

"Yes, I found them," Caroline said softly in Spanish and he reached out for her right hand. She took hold of his hand as Katherine walked closer and Katherine checked Bishop's vitals.

"How is he?" Cardinal asked in Latin.

"His pulse is a little fast, but he's fine," Katherine said in Latin.

"You can speak English?" Daryl asked Cardinal.

"Yeah, he can," Caroline said as she stood and walked to Cardinal. Cardinal stood still while Caroline moved the hood down and Cardinal shook out his hair. The long, light brown hair with gray, white and silver strands flew around his head as she smiled and he brushed the hair out of his face.

"Hello, Caroline," Cardinal said in English.

"Hello, Connor," she said in English then she frowned. "You lost your accent."

"No, I still have it. Jus' don't use it," Connor said as he switched to his normal accent.

Caroline wasn't sure what to do. She cleared her throat and Connor moved a little closer. She didn't have time to move when he pulled her into a hug and she slid her arms around him. She felt him shaking as she rubbed his back and he smiled.

"Caroline?" Bishop asked with his normal accent. Turning, she walked to him and he didn't seem to mind when she sat on his lap. She moved the hood down then smoothed down his long dark hair with gray, white and silver strands and she smiled.

"Hey, Murphy," she said in a soft voice. She noticed he was looking at the leather cord around her neck and she reached into her shirt to remove the leather cord. He looked at the weather-worn wooden cross and the tarnished silver circle and he held the weather-worn wooden cross in his right hand.

"You still have it," he said.

"Yeah."

Daryl walked to them as he stood behind Caroline and Murphy looked at Daryl.

"Hey," Daryl said.

"This is my brother, Daryl," Caroline said.

"Daryl Dixon?" Murphy asked.

"Yeah," Daryl said with a nod.

Murphy blinked as some tears rolled down his cheeks and Caroline wiped the tears away with the pads of her thumbs.

"I think he should go upstairs and rest," Katherine said and Connor looked at his brother.

"Think you can get up?" Connor asked Murphy.

"Yeah," Murphy said as he looked deeply into Caroline's eyes. "Or I could jus' stay here with this lovely lady sittin' on my lap."

He saw the blush moving across her cheeks as Caroline slightly lowered her head and he softly laughed. She got off his lap while Katherine helped Murphy stand and he held out his right hand. Caroline took hold of his hand as they headed for the doorway and Connor and Daryl followed them out of the room.

"This way," Katherine said and they headed down the hallway. She led them to the grand staircase as Caroline helped Murphy go upstairs and Connor and Daryl saw how the twosome looked at each other. They went up to the top floor when Katherine led them down the hallway and Daryl noticed the large doors at the end of the hallway. Katherine opened the doors as they walked in the room and she closed the door.

"Hunh," Daryl said.

The main room consisted of a large living room, dining room and kitchen. Light hard wood floor spread under the elegant furniture and a marble fireplace was to the right of the room. A blood red carpet was under the furniture and marble planters were in the corners. Large, stain glass windows were to the back of the room with bars in front of the windows and crosse were on the walls between the windows. The kitchen had a working refrigerator, sink and stove and iron chandeliers were connected to the ceiling by iron chains. Doors led to three bedrooms and a small library and landscape paintings were on the walls.

"You could fit both our apartments in this room," Caroline whispered to Murphy and he snorted a laugh.

"His room is over there," Connor said, pointing to the middle door.

"I don't wanna go t'bed," Murphy said.

"How about sittin' on the couch?" Caroline asked, looking at the white leather couch.

"Sure."

She slid her right arm around his waist as they headed for the couch and she helped him sit down. She sat next to him as Katherine checked his vitals and Connor headed for the wet bar. Daryl followed him as Connor picked up a crystal bottle and he looked at the amber liquid. He removed the topper then poured some of whiskey into a glass then he poured some more whiskey into another glass.

"Here," Connor said, handing one of the glasses to Daryl. Daryl looked at the whiskey. Sighing, Connor took a sip of whiskey and Daryl titled his head to one side. "It's safe."

Daryl took a sip of whiskey as the soft burn moved down his throat then warmed his stomach and he smiled.

"Not bad," Daryl said.

Connor and Daryl walked to the high back, white leather chairs as they sat down and Caroline sat next to Murphy, pulling her legs up onto the cushion. Katherine sat on the arm of the high back chair Connor was sitting on and Daryl looked at her.

"Why is she stayin'?" Daryl asked and Connor looked at her.

"She's my wife," Connor said. He noticed the stunned look in Caroline's eyes then she looked at Murphy. Murphy looked down at his hands while Connor cleared his throat and Caroline looked at him. "I was told you an' Daryl are travelin' through Paris."

"That's not exactly true," Caroline said then she and Daryl took turns explaining what happened. Connor, Katherine and Murphy nodded their heads from time-to-time and Murphy moved his left arm so she could snuggle closer.

"You have no idea who had you kidnapped?" Connor asked, looking at Daryl.

"No," Daryl said with a shake of his head.

"All we know is we're gonna have a hard time findin' a way home," Caroline said and Murphy moved away from her. She saw the hurt in his eyes as she moved closer and brushed some hair behind his left ear. "Murphy, what's wrong?"

"Nothin'," he said and Connor could feel the sadness coming from his brother while Daryl felt the confusion coming from his sister.

"Try pullin' the other leg," Caroline said with a small grin and Murphy frowned. He heard the humor in her voice as he turned to face her and he gently took hold of her hands.

"Ok, you only jus' got here an' now you wanna leave."

Caroline knew what Murphy was like when he wasn't feeling good or was really upset as she looked at her brother.

"Did I say we wanna leave?" Caroline asked Daryl. Her eyes shifted to Murphy then back and Daryl understood what she was doing.

"Nope. All you said is we'll have a hard time findin' a way home," Daryl said.

"He's right. That's what she said," Connor said after he got what she was doing. He knew how easily Murphy gets upset since the world ended and Connor barely smiled at Caroline.

"After I told them what happened to their horse, he asked if they could borrow a vehicle. I told you we don't let strangers have one of our vehicles," Katherine said. Connor felt the panic coming from his twin and he glared at Katherine.

"She's right."

"Then I guess we're stayin'," Caroline said, looking at Murphy. Murphy tried not to yawn as she stood and held out her hands. "Now, I think Katherine's right. You need to go get some rest."

"But…," Murphy said.

Murphy saw a look in Caroline's eyes which reminded him of when his mother was getting frustrated with him and he rose to his feet. She looked at Connor and Connor pointed to the door with a wooden dragon hanging on a nail. She led Murphy to the door while Katherine followed her and Katherine opened the door. They walked in the bedroom as Katherine closed the door behind them and Connor looked at Daryl.

"I was told someone robbed you," Connor said.

"They told Caroline they didn't rob us, but put our stuff in one of yer storage rooms," Daryl said.

"Which one?"

"Storage Room Five."

"Did they let you go see if yer stuff was there?"

"Was gonna do that, but Katherine said we had to get yer permission first."

Connor nodded when he stood, finished the whiskey then headed for the door. Daryl finished the whiskey then stood and he followed Connor out of the room.
