Hello!
This is a chapter 2 of my story A glimpse of something new.
Enjoy!
Andy was looking at the adoption certificate in her hand. Her eyes were scanning it over and over again but she couldn't make out a single word from it. She felt dizzy and she was pretty sure she had stopped breathing because her lungs were heavy with that painful feeling of drowning. There was loud ringing in her ears so that she couldn't focus and images flasing in front of her eyes that could either be flashbacks of her dreams or long forgotten past; or they could just be a made-up of her mind. She felt more lost than ever and she desperately needed an escape to pull out of this reality, to leave everything behind and never look back. She forced herself to take a deep breath and lie on the floor. She took another deep breath then exhaled. She did it again and again until she started feeling a sense of control she had lost when she found the adoption certificate. As she was controlling her breathing the ringing in her ears and flashbacks stopped. She tried to focus on what she knew that might help her understand all of this. First, my parents probably aren't my parents at all. No, she couldn't allow herself to have these thoughts now. She stood up and a wave of dizziness took over her. She grabbed the edge of her sofa before she could collapse. She steadied her mind and cleared her vision before she slowly and steadiliy stood up. She made her way to the kitchen and started making coffee, although she didn't need one because she was already more awake than ever, she thought with a bitter smile. As she was waiting for water to boil she looked around the appartement. Everything was so still almost like no one lived in here. She never got around to decorate this place to make a personal touch that would make her appartement hers. In this morning light the appartement seemed to reflect her inner self. A lonly, dark place without any glimpse of hope. She never thought her life would take this turn. She knew it won't always be all happiness and positivity but not in a million dreams she would imagine something like this would ever happen to her. She was always crowded with people. Looking back to her past she realized it was a shield to cover her true fear - to be alone and lonely. She would let anyone in who seemed friendly at first sight. It was a weakness but she has been scared to be lonly since she could remember. Maybe that was something that stayed with me from whatever had happened behind the adoption. It was a scary thought that pulled her from wondering and set her back into reality. She poured herself a cup of coffee and took a sip from it. It wasn't bad but it wasn't like the coffee Sullivan would make. A sudden sadness washed over her. As she was standing in this miserable place she remembered how much she had lost. Her father, her best friend Ryan...the love of her life, her husband Robert Sullivan. She felt a big lump in her throat and a prickle behind her eyes. Normally she would keep her tears at bay, but today wasn't normal and she was way too much exhausted to do that. So she let them stream down her cheeks. There was something about that feeling of fresh tears on her cheeks that made her feel helpless. She cried and she screamed at everyone and no one at the same time. I am probaby going crazy, she tought but she didn't stop until her throat was sore and she had shattered all of her tears. She was a girl, lost in the woods unable to find help. Then I would help myself, she thought with determination. She descended back to the sofa and picked up the adoption certificate. She felt another wave of dizziness creeping over her but she ignored it. She looked for the information about birth parents. They were unknown, but she had found a name of facility from where they adopted her. It wasn't an orphanage or a foster care system. It was a social help centre where her cousin Michelle worked as a psychologist. Despite not knowing her parents, Andy however was able to find the information about her origins. Apparently she was most likely to be Scottish because she had an accent as a child and was brought to the mental health facility in Scotland which had cooporated with that social help centre by a man who didn't identify himself but insisted to transport her to the USA. Everything was very strage-looking and Andy was starting to understand that her adoption wasn't very accurate maybe even illegal. She couldn't read further, everything was too much for her mind and she had enough of mistery for one day. Her sadness was replaced by anger which wasn't exactly the best of fun but anything was better than that feeling of helplessness. Andy could feel her senses returning to her and she realized she was hungry. She went to the fridge but couldn't find anything that wasn't expired, so she decided to go to the shop and buy some grocery.
Robert just got off the phone with Natasha. She asked him to go to the supermarket to get some grocery for today's dinner. The domesticity of their relationship felt like a lie to him. He cared for her of course, but he couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. She offered him a position at work to keep him close but Robert suspected it was also because she didn't want him near Andy. She told him she didn't mind her but he knew Andy still presented a threat to her. Andy wasn't easy and she stood up for herself when she needed to. She wasn't going to bend her head just because the new chief had her way of doing things. That stubbornness was something Robert always loved about her. She was fierce and fearless and had an amazing figure. His traitor mind went on and on about Andy's positive traits until he reached the supermarket. He looked at the text Natasha sent him with a list of all the things he needed to buy. It wasn't a lot but he knew he'll have to hurry because the A team at 19 is soon going to be called to help at the station. Today was the inspection day and they needed their best team even if it was their day off. He was the only one who had known about the arival of inspection today. It was one good thing about dating Natasha - she would tell him what was going to happen at the station before the official notice. Because he was so occupied with his thoughts he wasn't careful and he bumped into someone. As he turned around to politely apologize his brows rose in surprise. He was staring into that impossible eyes that had belonged to his ex-wife. He saw a brief surprise on her face as well and a moment later her expression changed. She didn't looked pleased to see him, almost angry. He couldn't understand it, they worked things out and if anyone should be angry is him.
"Watch where you're going", she hissed picking up her basket. "If you're like that on calls the only thing saving your job is sleeping with the chief".
Robert was startled at the side comment. Andy was hot headed and she had to learn how to handle guys at 23 but she wasn't mean. And how could she possibly know about his relationship with Natasha?Andy must have noticed the confussion on his face because she continued with a vicious smile.
"Yes, I saw you two together. You would probably do anything to get promoted back to batallion chief. Even date her." She spat the last word out with pure disgust.
"Well I guess I could said the same thing
about you and Beckett." he knew it wasn't fair of him to say it but he wasn't going to let her treat him like a failure. She laughed in an eerie high pitch that sent chills throughout his entire body.
"You always thought you knew what's best for me didn't you? Well you don't and you don't get to hurt me again!"
"Do you really think hurting you was my intention?! I tried to show you that I loved and cared about you for eleven months and you didn't even care!" he raised his voice and some people already started staring at them like they were some kind of reality show.
"Well I don't know what to think anymore. I just figured out I might be adopted and you don't know me. You really don't because I don't either!" As soon as the words escaped her lips something in her behavior changed. Robert saw a glimpse of confusion before it was replaced by something else. An unwanted realization, he realized. If he wouldn't be so shocked by this information himself, he would ask
her to stay and talk to him about it but she already dropped her basket and rushed out of supermarket. He wanted to follow her but he got the text that all members of the A team at station 19 had to come to the station right away. He looked at Andy's basket half full of grocery on the floor. He had to go and he knew he could leave the basket there so that later a shop assistant could put everything in its place but he couldn't do that. He grabbed the basket and looked at the grocery. There weren't a lot of things in the basket. He reached out for one of them and started looking for a shelf were Andy had earlier that day picked it up. When he found it he placed the thing back on the shelf. He did that with all of the things inside the basket before leaving the supermarket and going to the station.
Andy barely got to the car before the tears started streaming down her cheeks. She was in shock and shaken by her actions. She was really shaken by the fact that she had just shared the information about the possibility of being adopted. She realized she hadn't truly believed it herself, but saying it out loud brought her to the brutal reality that her entire life might have been a lie. But mostly, Andy was shaken of how she was behaving towards Robert earlier. The things she said to him were so mean and hurtful. She felt the imense amount of regret but there was also a glimpse of satisfaction deep down inside her. Who have I become? The question that played in her mind will most likely never be answered. She caught a glance of her reflection in the mirror of her car. The grim expression on her face said it all. Did she want to hurt Robert in that moment? She was angry and he just seemed like a great target. She wasn't even sure she ment all of those things. Of course she was upset Robert was dating Natasha, but she knew he would never date that woman just to get his old position back. Remembering the hurt in his eyes she squeezed the wheel tighter. Before she could realize where she was going she already parked the car in front of her mother's house. She had one chance at finding out the truth once and for all. She grabbed the adoption certificate - she had for some reason put it in her purse before leaving the appartement. She put on her game face and ringed the doorbell. Her mother stepped outside and looked at Andy, worry written all over her face. Andy realized she probably looked like a mess. As soon as her mother caught the view of the adoption certificate it became clear. She wasn't her biological mother and Pruitt Herrera wasn't her biological father. Her mother who wasn't her real mother opened her mouth to speak.
"I - I can explain" she managed to say at last.
"Save it, Elena", Andy's voice was cold as stone. She didn't call her "mother". Why would she? The woman was never a part of her life, but somehow it still seemed wrong. Andy took another glance at Elena and then stormed back to her car. Elena ran to her, but she had already slammed her car's door and drove away. Andy stopped her car at the empty parking lot. She went through her phone. She had five missed phone calls - all from Robert. He texted her five minutes ago as well. She looked at the text. 'Where are you? You have to come to the station.' There was one text from the station sent twenty minutes ago ordering her to come to the station because of some kind of inspection. She was already twenty minutes late. Andy started her car again. She was in no condition to drive, let alone work but she had to go.
This is it for today's chapter.

She later that day goes to a supermarket where she meets Robert and has a fight with him. Then Andy goes to her mother's place to confront her about the adoption certificate.
