Chapter 10: Look What You Made Me Do

Emily sat at a table by the window at the Brew staring out at the clouds floating by. She knows that today is the day Hanna Marin was getting married. Hanna sent an invitation to her old home address before she decided to move in with Alison to keep her company. Emily was appalled after hearing the news she was back with Caleb. After all these years, she thought her friend would be better than that. Hanna has kept her promise to keep their identity's a secret, but it still hurt that she said yes to Caleb. Despite all of that, Emily still feels bad missing Hanna's big day. The three of them, she, Hanna, and Aria used to spend hours after school listening to Hanna plan her future wedding. She and Aria would be her bridesmaids. Hanna would have a big, beautiful dress. There will be lots of flowers, cool music, and a lot of dancing. All of that changed overnight because Hanna chose Caleb over her friends.

Speaking of the devil, Caleb Rivers tore into the Brew in a rage. He ran towards the stairway that leads to Toby's loft. Emily's instincts were to duck beneath the table, but instead, she got up and followed him. She listened from underneath the staircase.

"Toby!" Caleb was pounding his fists against the door. "Toby! I know you're in there! Open up!"

*POUND, POUND, POUND*

"Toby!" Caleb yelled. "I know you have her in there! I swear, I will kill you!"

Her? Emily had no clue who Caleb was referring to. It sounded dumb, but Emily's first thought was that maybe what Alison said that one night was true. When Alison told Emily she saw Spencer outside the kitchen window. Did Toby find Spencer? Was she with him now? How did Caleb find out so fast? Emily's next thought was she was going crazy because there was no way that was possible. Spencer is dead.

*POUND, POUND*

"If you hurt Hanna, you're a dead man! You hear me!"

Hanna? Now, that makes much more sense. Did Toby do something to Hanna? Emily just now noticed how nicely Caleb is dressed up. She put the pieces together. Toby kidnapped Hanna on their wedding day. In some twisted way, it was actually the perfect revenge. Toby nabs Hanna on the day Caleb is supposed to have his happily ever after since Caleb was the one responsible for Spencer's death. Emily almost hated herself for thinking how clever Toby was for this. She also knew that Toby wouldn't be dumb enough to bring Hanna back to his loft. No. He would take Hanna and go dark. Even though Hanna betrayed them, Emily still cared about her. She doesn't want anything bad to happen to her. The old Toby would never go as far as to hurt Hanna, but this new Toby. Emily had no idea what he was capable of.

Aria ran into the Brew then up the stairs to find Caleb yelling outside Toby's door. Emily was surprised to see Aria because she assumed she left town months ago. Then again it was in Aria's nature to blend in with society.

"Is she here?" Aria asked.

"I don't think so," Caleb said. "He's not in there, but I know damn well he's hiding something inside there that will lead us to Hanna."

Caleb twisted the doorknob expecting it to be locked, but it was open. Caleb slowly walked into Toby's loft with Aria behind him. The space appeared normal. They walked towards the bedroom. Everything in Toby's room appeared normal except for a random cellphone lying on top of his bed. Toby wouldn't just leave his phone laying around. Caleb figured it was left for him to find. He picked up the phone to switch it on. He searched through the contacts. One phone number was programmed into its settings. Caleb took a risk and dialed it. It rang a few times before someone answered.

"Smart boy," Toby's voice spoke through the phone.

"Toby," Caleb hissed. "What the hell are you doing? What have you done with Hanna?"

"She's fine. For now."

"Let her go."

"Not until I get what I want."

Caleb gripped the phone tightly, "What do you want?"

"What do I want?" Toby repeated the question back to him. "What I want is for you to feel the way I feel right now. I want you to know what it feels like to have that one special thing, the one thing you treasure most, the one person that means the most to you, the one person you love more than anything else on this planet. I want you to know what it's like to have that ripped away from you."

"I feel it, man. I feel your pain.

"No, no I don't think you do," Toby said. "You need to be so blinded by anger that you can't think straight. I want you to feel guilty that you didn't do enough to protect her, thinking you could've done more. I want you to lose hunger. I want you to lose months of sleep aching about the future you could've had with her if you weren't so pathetic. I want you to understand that everything that's happened this past year is all your fault. You did this. You're the reason Spencer is dead. You are the reason my world sucks. You are the reason that Hanna is missing. Your choices lead to this, and I want you to think about that and really live with that feeling."

"Toby," Caleb was pleading now. "Don't hurt Hanna. She's a good person."

"So was Spencer," Toby said.

Caleb sighed, "if I could take back my actions I would. Please, I'll do anything to make this right."

"Anything?"

Caleb exhaled, "yes. What do you want me to do?"

"Two years ago, when I was a student at the academy Tanner and her colleagues conducted an experiment on witches to find out if the truth about them being dangerous were real. The data collected during those experiments proved the theory to be false. They proved that witches were innocent. It proved that what the academy has been doing is wrong. You know what Tanner and Officer Wilden did? They covered up the truth and hid it from the public. If that information ever got out, then the world would know that they've just been killing innocent people all this time for nothing. I want you to hack their computers and leak that information to the public."

"I can't hack their computers," Caleb said. "Their software is locked tighter than the CIA."

"Then you better find a way around it," said Toby. "If you want Hanna back alive, you better do it."

Static noise echoed through the phone as the line went dead. Caleb held the phone feeling lost on what to do.

After hanging up the phone, Toby broke it, tore out it's battery then dumped it in a trashcan. He took a deep breath then climbed back into his truck. He drove two miles up the dirt road and parked outside a cabin. This was his father's hunting cabin. It was like the one Wayne Fields had, only it was near a pond with some trees.

Inside, Hanna was kept locked in a room with a single bed and a wooden desk with a lamp. She did have her own bathroom which would've been thoughtful if it weren't for the fact she's being kept here against her will. Hanna looked at her torn up wedding dress and smeared makeup. She spent so much money getting her hair and makeup done. She tried to use her fingernails to unlock the chain on her ankle. No luck.

"Hello!" She shouted at the walls. "Can anyone here me!"

"No, actually they can't." Toby said, as he entered the room. He was holding a tray of food and a bottle of water for her. "These walls are soundproof."

"What the actual hell, Toby!" Hanna yelled. "I swear, If I wasn't chained to this bed, I would break your face with that desk lamp!"

"Well, you can take it off then. The key to it is in that desk drawer."

Hanna was skeptical. She eyed the drawer before standing up and slowly walking over to it. She opened the drawer, and like Toby had said, there was a tiny key. The key was in the room this whole time.

"Okay," Hanna held the key up at him. "Either you're really stupid or you suck at kidnapping people."

"Says the one who never even thought to check the room for a key before ruining your perfectly manicured nails," said Toby.

Hanna unlocked the chain then rubbed her ankle. Then, she snatched the desk lamp and held it up at Toby.

"Now, are you going to let me out of this room, or do I have to kill you with this?"

Toby chuckled, "Oh, how I've missed your classy way with words. You could run if you want, but after you listen to me, I don't think you'll want to."

Hanna arched her brow, "and why is that?"

"Because everything I am doing right now is in order to end the witch hunting program once and for all. And finally, avenge Spencer's death."

Toby blackmails Caleb using Hanna. How will this go? Will Caleb do as he told? What does Toby have planned for Hanna? So many possibilities.
