Chapter 12- Listen to Your Heart
Thatcher Industries Hangar- Raileigh-Durham International Airport…
"Oh, good afternoon, Mrs. Thatcher. Mr. Thatcher hasn't landed yet. Last I heard they had left Boston, but I don't expect them to land for a few hours," Jack advised. "I'll be glad to let him know you stopped by, or I can give him a message for you if you'd like. Is it an emergency? If so, I can reach him on the radio."
"Well actually, Captain Thornton, I really came by to talk to you."
"Please, Mrs. Thatcher, call me, Jack…" he stated. Not certain what she wanted to talk about, he asked, "Is here okay or do we need someplace private?"
"Well, I didn't see anyone else in the hangar, so I'm fine right here," she responded as he held out a chair for her to take a seat.
"Thank you," she stated. "Okay, Jack, I want you to know that I don't usually get involved, but I'm a little worried and I was hoping you could help me."
"Oh, I'm sorry…I'll be glad to help you if I can, but I don't really know anything about the inner workings of the business. I mean if you want information about flying the jets, I can help, other than that, I'm not sure I would be of any benefit."
"Actually, I'd like to talk with you about Elizabeth."
Remembering that she wasn't home the previous night, he quickly took his seat opposite Mrs. Thatcher, "Elizabeth…is she okay?"
"Physically, she's fine," Mrs. Thatcher responded before quickly adding, "Look, I'm not going to beat around the bush."
"Ma'am…?"
"Jack, I'd like to ask you how you feel about my daughter?"
At that particular moment, what he was feeling was uncomfortable. Fidgeting in his seat, he responded, "I'm not sure what you mean."
"It's a simple question…how do you feel about Elizabeth?" she asked again.
"Mrs. Thatcher, I don't feel comfortable discussing this with you when I haven't told Elizabeth how I feel."
She read between the lines and smiled, "I assume by your last comment that you do have feelings for her, and in case you don't know, she's in California interviewing for several positions with TV stations there."
"She's leaving…why?"
"Jack, I don't consider myself a stupid woman, and I don't generally meddle in my daughters' lives, but when I met you, and got to know you a little better, I wanted Elizabeth to meet you," she explained. "You see, I believe that of the people you meet throughout your life, some are meant to be a lesson, while others are meant to be a blessing. I don't know what category you fit in, although I have my suspicions, and truly that's a decision to be made by you and Elizabeth. But sometimes you have to give a little nudge or in some cases, a kick, so that's why I changed things around and had you fly her to Fiji."
"I'm not sure I understand, ma'am…"
Mrs. Thatcher smiled, "Let me explain. Jack, Elizabeth is special…"
"Yes, ma'am, I know that."
"You know, I believe you do. But what I really mean is this…of my three daughters, I worry the most about Elizabeth when it comes to matters of the heart."
"Ma'am…?"
"It's quite simple, Jack. Elizabeth has such a tight hold on her heart, often closing herself off, because she's afraid to let anyone in. Well, she opened up somewhat to Ryan, but even with him, I think down deep inside she had reservations. When he walked away, I don't believe she was upset at the loss; she was more angry, disappointed and hurt that he left her to clear up the mess on her own."
"He's a poor excuse for a man…"
"Well, you won't get any argument from me on that one," Mrs. Thatcher adamantly agreed. "Anyway, I believe that Elizabeth saw in you a man she could trust; someone who would hold her heart as carefully as she would hold yours. So, she cracked that gate open around her heart just enough for you to slip through, but she was still scared. I don't know what happened between the two of you; I haven't asked, and it's frankly none of my business unless she wants to talk to me about it. But I believe she had in her mind that something would go wrong, maybe even looking for a reason to run…like somehow, she's not worthy of a good man in her life."
"Mrs. Thatcher, Elizabeth is the best woman I've ever known. She's kind, considerate, compassionate, empathetic and thoughtful, and she obviously loves my dog…"
"Jack, there is no doubt in my mind that Elizabeth has feelings for you, but I think she's afraid of being hurt."
"Mrs. Thatcher, I would never intentionally hurt Elizabeth…"
"You know, I do believe you, but the fact is, she is hurting," she responded. "Don't get me wrong, by no means am I blaming you. You see, to Elizabeth, it's easier to close herself off in hopes of preventing the hurt than it is to open up and take the risk."
"Mrs. Thatcher, I don't know what to say. Your husband hired me to fly Elizabeth to Fiji and to be on hand in case she needed anything. I'm sure that me developing feelings for her wasn't what he had in mind. I'm sorry. I've let you and Mr. Thatcher down, and most importantly, I've hurt Elizabeth," Jack stood up to get another cup of coffee. "Would you like something?" he asked. "We have several kinds of soda, water, and juice. If you want coffee, I can fix a fresh pot…this one here is so strong it could sit up without a cup."
Mrs. Thatcher laughed, conscious of his apparent nervousness, "No thank you; I'm fine."
Returning to his seat, Jack continued, "Mrs. Thatcher, in my defense, I've had feelings for Elizabeth for an awfully long time, only the Elizabeth I fell for was Elizabeth Standish, not Elizabeth Thatcher. I didn't know they were one in the same person until she showed up at the airport for the flight to Fiji."
"Well, Jack, I have no problem with you and Elizabeth being involved together while you work for the company. As for Mr. Thatcher, to be honest, he's a daddy and in his eyes, no man is good enough for his girls. So, it truly has nothing to do with you being employed by the company."
"Oh, so he wouldn't like me, no matter what? That certainly doesn't make me feel any better."
"Sorry to burst your bubble, Jack. Since you don't have any children, daughters especially, you probably aren't aware but there is a difference between the way a mother and a father see the men involved in their daughters' lives."
Before he could respond, Mrs. Thatcher continued, "As a mother, my main concern is that my daughters find men who love them unconditionally, without question or reservation. I want their partners to stand beside them in life, and I pray that not a day goes by where they question their husband's love for them."
"I understand and can appreciate that…" Jack responded.
"Well, a father wants the same things, but I personally think that it's harder on him than a mother. You see, his daughter has been 'daddy's little girl' since the day she was born. He watches her grow and through the years she comes to him to fix everything…he is her whole world, but if truth be told, she is his, as well.
But then something changes. She falls in love and her father is no longer the most important man in her life. Oh, she still loves him, that part doesn't change, but when she needs help with something, she no longer calls her father; she calls her boyfriend, or fiancé or husband. No matter how old she gets, she'll always be daddy's little girl. So, that makes it hard for a father to let go…"
"Well, I don't have any children, but I actually can see how he feels there. I'm sure it is difficult."
Jack moved back in his seat and took a breath, hoping to ease his nerves. "Mrs. Thatcher, I've tried to call her, and text her, but she hasn't responded," he admitted. "I've been by her house several times, but she's never home…last night being my most recent trip. I've tried to find time when Mr. Thatcher is available that we could talk, but that hasn't happened, either. So," Jack reached into his inside jacket pocket and pulled out an envelope, "this is my letter of resignation."
"Jack, I can't accept this…"
"Mrs. Thatcher, whether I can make things right with Elizabeth or not, I'm not so sure that I can continue working here. It's a great company, but…my feelings for Elizabeth are strong, and I understand that she just got out of a relationship with Ryan, and I would never pressure her, but I want her to know that I am willing to wait for her."
"Well, as for Ryan, she found out on Monday that the entire pushing them together, the wedding and everything was a ruse for ratings."
"So, was Ryan in on it?"
"Apparently so…"
"He didn't care about her?"
"As far as I'm concerned, he didn't, but if you hear him talk, he's back and wants to start things up again."
"That son of a B… I'm sorry, treating her like an object with no feelings, it makes me so angry. So, is she leaving for sure?"
"I really never thought it would get this far, but she's either running toward something, or away from someone. I think it's the latter, and I believe that someone is you."
Jack looked down, and released a soft laugh before turning his attention back to Mrs. Thatcher, "WOW, so much for not spilling my guts before I talk with Elizabeth. I think I know where she gets her interviewing skills…"
"Well, I guess I need to go make some flight arrangements," Jack stated as he pulled up the travel app on his phone.
"Travel arrangements; are you going somewhere?" Mrs. Thatcher asked, feeling certain that his destination would be California.
"Ma'am, I love Elizabeth, and I honestly believe that if she can put her anger aside, she's in love with me, too. So, I think Bella and I just need to find her and fight for our family…"
Hearing Jack speak so passionately about Elizabeth made her smile, "I'm glad to hear that."
"Do you know where she is; I mean, can you narrow the search area a bit…California is a huge State."
"She's in a place called Solvang…"
"Okay, that's the Santa Ynez Airport…"
"Yes, she mentioned that, but said it was so small and they had her flying into Santa Barbara Airport."
"Good to know. If I recall correctly that airport doesn't even have a control tower and mostly handles single engine aircraft, gliders and helicopters. Even the Thatcher Industries jets are too big to fly into that airport. It's tiny…"
"Speaking of which, there is a perfectly good jet sitting in the hangar, and it isn't expected to fly anywhere in the next eight days, so, why don't you take it," Mrs. Thatcher declared. Catching Jack's expression, she responded, "Why the look…I checked the schedule before I drove out here."
"Mrs. Thatcher, I can't take the jet."
"Well, that's one of the perks of being a co-owner of the company…"
"But I'm not employed with the company anymore."
"Jack, I am not accepting your resignation letter, at least not until you and Elizabeth talk."
"But ma'am, I'm sure Mr. Thatcher will be upset, and I don't want to cause any problems between the two of you."
"I have been married to Mr. Thatcher for well over thirty years; I know how to handle him, so don't you worry about that."
Jack looked down at his cup of coffee, half consumed, and halfheartedly smiled as he looked into Mrs. Thatcher's eyes, "Ma'am, I mean no disrespect, but are you telling me all this and offering to let me use the jet because you're hoping I can stop Elizabeth from moving away? If so, I can't do that. I would never push her into anything that she doesn't want to do. If this is her dream, I want to support her."
"Jack, I won't lie and say that I'm not heartbroken at the possibility of Elizabeth moving away. But I have always told my girls to go after their dreams, no matter where it leads them. So, it pleases me to hear you say that you'd support her dreams."
Mrs. Thatcher stood from the table, "I guess the question you'll need to ask yourself, Jack, is this; if she decides to take a job out west, does she mean enough to you to go with her?"
Although Jack didn't answer her question, he immediately jumped up, "I need to run home and grab a bag and Bella before I can leave. Do you need me to drop you off somewhere?"
She smiled, knowing where he was headed, and hopeful that he could bring the joy back into Elizabeth's eyes. "No, I have my car." She watched as Jack grabbed his keys from the counter and headed out to his truck.
Mrs. Thatcher took Jack's resignation letter and slipped it into her purse, having no intention of accepting it, at least until after he had spoken with Elizabeth.
Jack's apartment- Raleigh, NC…
Jack rushed inside, happily greeted by a confused Bella. "We're going to find mommy," the last word sent Bella's tail wagging and body spinning in circles.
Jack rushed into his bedroom, grabbed a bag, and packed his clothes, personal items as well as Bella's food and her favorite shark toy.
On their way back to the airport, Jack called Lee, "Hey…"
"Hey, what's up…?"
"I just wanted to let you and Rosie know that I'm flying out to California."
"Do you need us to watch Bella for you?"
"No, I'm taking her with me."
"Okay, so what does the company have you flying out there for?"
"I'm going to find Elizabeth…"
"What…?"
"She's in California interviewing for jobs. Bella and I want to find her and support her if this is what she wants."
"You're a good man, Jack." Lightly covering the phone mouthpiece, Lee called out, "Rosie, Jack is going to find Elizabeth…"
"WOOHOO…like the Lizzo song, 'it's about damn time!'"
Jack and Bella made the quick drive back to the airport before Mr. Thatcher's jet arrived, which pleased Jack who was not looking forward to a confrontation with Elizabeth's father, the man he now knew, thanks to Mrs. Thatcher, would probably never like him.
Before entering the hangar and preparing to leave for California, Jack took one more chance and tapped out another text…
"Hi Elizabeth, it's me, Jack. Look, I'm really trying here, because this is important…you r important 2 me. We need 2 talk. I don't like the way things were left between us. I didn't express myself correctly, I admit that, but please give me a chance 2 make this right. Bella and I really miss you. Call me back, so we can get together and talk…"
Solvang Alisal Vacation Cottages- Solvang, California…
Elizabeth assumed that the best way to settle her mind and think clearly about the job opportunity that had been offered, was to put her thoughts, rational or not, down in her book of secrets. She grabbed her tote bag and sat on her bed. She had so much on her mind, a possible new job, and definite old job, moving away from home, leaving everything she knew behind…and then there was Jack, and whether she knew it or not, there would always be Jack…
As tears rolled down her cheeks, she clicked her pen open and began to write…
"At some point, taking responsibility for our own life is necessary, requiring us to say 'goodbye' to the safety and security of our friends and family and pushing us out of our comfort zone. Throughout our lives, everything we experience, from excitement, achievement and joy, to anticipation, fear and sorrow, is packed away, as we learn appropriate ways to handle each new situation.
Fear comes in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes it's the feeling you get as the wind howls and lightning fills the sky. Sometimes it can be just as strong when you say goodbye to everyone you know to begin a new adventure, and yet, sometimes you seem to be standing alone when the devil himself comes knocking, or in this case comes out from behind a curtain, or assumes that you are only worthy of being eye candy for a man's political career, or, you learn that you are the butt of the most heinous of jokes."
She took several deep breaths before returning to her journal…
"I refuse to allow anyone to compromise my dreams. I won't deny it; I'm scared to go. I've never been so far away from home and those I love before. Although I know my parents are always with me, no matter the distance, I still feel alone. I won't lie, if things had been different with Jack, I wouldn't leave. Well, I wouldn't stay in Charlotte either, but I would try to find something in Raleigh. But, then again, if wishes were horses, I'd have a barn full.
Maybe I just need a fresh start…no Jack, no Ryan, and even as much as I love him, no living under my father's microscope. I need to make my own decisions, good or bad, without feeling required to explain the 'whys and the why nots.' For I have been challenged, both personally and professionally, and what I've learned is that I am strong; I am capable, and I am worthy of so much more than many seem to believe."
Elizabeth grabbed her phone to call Andy, feeling that she had no choice but to accept the position he'd offered. Before dialing his number, she checked her email, and every letter of interest she'd sent was returned with an offer for an interview. But the truth was, Solvang was beautiful, quiet, and provided her with an old-timey nostalgic flair, something she thought she could desperately use at this point in her life.
Before making any calls, Elizabeth pulled up her Spotify app on her phone and needing inspiration, she replayed the song, "Daydream…"
By the end of the song, she was completely in tears. Elizabeth knew she had to work, she couldn't live off her parents, nor would she want to. However, was she biting off her nose to spite her face by moving so far away from everyone and everything she knew; was that really her dream? But if not, could she remain on the east coast, and possibly run into Jack, knowing that she ruined what might have been the best thing in her life?
Elizabeth placed her journal back into her bag, having to slip the mail package Pete gave her over to make it fit. Knowing that she hadn't ordered anything, she pulled it from her bag.
Scanning the envelope, she observed that there was no return address, which she thought to be odd, and for a split second, she contemplated throwing it away, but chose to open it instead.
Inside she found several items and a letter. Opening the letter, she began to read…
"Dear Elizabeth,
Please don't tear this up before reading it. I have called repeatedly, and sent hundreds of texts, but you won't respond, and I guess I can't blame you. I left you feeling that my job was more important to me than you. That is so far from the truth."
Elizabeth walked over and took a seat on her bed, "You didn't call or text me…I've heard nothing from you." She tapped the 'recent calls' button on her phone and scrolled through the numbers…nothing. Checking her 'messages,' for texts, and again, nothing.
Reaching into the envelope she found an acrylic keychain, with a picture of her and Jack and media symbols with a sticky note attached… "Go to Spotify…"
Elizabeth did as he suggested, and scanned the symbol on the keychain. Immediately, "You Are the Reason" by Calum Scott, began to play through her phone.
There goes my heart beating
'Cause you are the reason
I'm losing my sleep
Please come back now
And there goes my mind racing
And you are the reason
That I'm still breathing
I'm hopeless now
I'd climb every mountain
And swim every ocean
Just to be with you
And fix what I've broken
Oh, 'cause I need you to see
That you are the reason
There go my hands shaking
And you are the reason
My heart keeps bleeding
I need you now
And if I could turn back the clock
I'd make sure the light defeated the dark
I'd spend every hour, of every day
Keeping you safe
And I'd climb every mountain
And swim every ocean
Just to be with you
And fix what I've broken
Oh, 'cause I need you to see
That you are the reason
I don't wanna fight no more
I don't wanna hide no more
I don't wanna cry no more
Come back I need you to hold me (you are the reason)
Be a little closer now
Just a little closer now
Come a little closer
I need you to hold me tonight
I'd climb every mountain
And swim every ocean
Just to be with you
And fix what I've broken
'Cause I need you to see
That you are the reason
Elizabeth stretched out on her bed and held the keychain close to her chest as the song ended and her tears dampened her pillow.
She sat up, wiped her eyes over and over again before the tears, and burning sensation seemed to ease. She grabbed the next item, a plaque, somewhat like the keychain, only it was larger, with a picture of Jack, a wooden stand, and instructions to again go through Spotify for this song… "In Case You Didn't Know," by Brett Young.
I can't count the times
I almost said what's on my mind
But I didn't
Just the other day
I wrote down all the things I'd say
But I couldn't
I just couldn't
Baby I know that you've been wondering
Mmm, so here goes nothing
In case you didn't know
Baby I'm crazy 'bout you
And I would be lying if I said
That I could live this life without you
Even though I don't tell you all the time
You had my heart a long, long time ago
In case you didn't know
The way you look tonight
That second glass of wine
That did it, mmm
There was something 'bout that kiss
Girl, it did me in
Got me thinking
I'm thinking
One of the things that I've been feeling
Mmm it's time you hear 'em
In case you didn't know
Baby I'm crazy 'bout you
And I would be lying if I said
That I could live this life without you
Even though I don't tell you all the time
You had my heart a long, long time ago
In case you didn't know
You've got all of me
I belong to you
Yeah, you're my everything
In case you didn't know
I'm crazy 'bout you
I would be lying if I said
That I could live this life without you
Even though I don't tell you all the time
You had my heart a long, long time ago
Yeah, you had my heart a long, long time ago
Mmm, in case you didn't know
No, no in case you didn't know
Returning to his letter, Elizabeth was certain that she could not possibly shed any more tears. However, as she continued reading, she realized just how wrong she was. Trying to read his words through the misty blur in her eyes, she practically emptied a full box of Kleenex, piling the soaked tissues beside her on the bedside table. "You asked me once if I had ever told anyone that I loved them. The answer was 'No.' The truth is, I never wanted to say it, because I never felt it…that is, until I met you. Before you, I never wanted to say the words. Before you, I never wanted to hear them either. Those three little words are so powerful and mean too much to be used without deep thought and consideration; you have to feel it in your heart!
But now…now all I want is to see you and have you say from your heart that you feel as I do…that you can't stand to live another day apart.
Please know that I have wanted to tell you how I feel for quite some time. I have no problem with the words, saying them to you, and feeling them for you, but I was afraid that they were too soon for you to hear. I was afraid of pushing you away. So, I waited, and now I wish I hadn't.
But, here goes, Elizabeth Thatcher, I love you. I have honestly loved you for a long, long time, and I'm so sorry to be telling you like this, in a letter. It should be done as we dance under the stars, my arms holding you close, so close that you can feel my heart pounding against your chest, or as we sit by a nice cozy fire at our cabin tucked in the woods, toasting marshmallows and talking about our dreams for the future…my sweet Elizabeth, just so you know, you are in every single one of mine.
I told you that if a relationship meant anything to me, I'd fight for it. I have…I am, and I'll continue to fight, because you are worth it…we…we are worth it."
Feeling something else in the envelope, Elizabeth reached inside and pulled out a picture box of sorts, with photos of Jack and Elizabeth together and alone and as the cube opened, there was a picture of Bella walking into the ocean. It was very appropriate, for she was the love of both of their lives…the one thing that had brought them together in the first place.
Elizabeth's fingers ran across each picture, smiling as she touched Jack's face. Returning to the letter he'd written, Elizabeth continued to read through unrelenting tears…
"I honestly had so much fun with you in Fiji; you were so easy to be around and to talk to, and you were absolutely everything that I always knew you would be. I know that sounds stalker-ish, but I don't mean it that way. I have cared about you for a long time, way before I knew who you really were. From the day we met at the animal shelter, you have been on my mind. Unfortunately, I assumed you were married…I now know why they say that assumptions are the mother of all mistakes."
She smiled before muttering, "That they are…"
"Elizabeth, you are beautiful, inside, and out, and I honestly forgot that we weren't in Fiji as a couple. That is until I saw your dad's name on a plaque in the cockpit. You see, your father trusted me to take care of you, but please understand, I never viewed my time with you as a job. My feelings for you were true…they are true, and I'm so sorry that I hurt you…I would rather cut off my right arm than to have hurt you in any way.
I wish I could turn back the clock and make everything right. If only I could…I wouldn't have let you leave that morning. I would have talked when you wanted to, and I would have explained how important you are to me.
But unfortunately, I carry that 'Y' chromosome…you know the one that makes men bumbling idiots and for some reason I just couldn't talk, or maybe I was afraid to.
I have tried to talk to your father, but he's always flying somewhere or arriving from a trip and in a hurry to get home. I can't blame him, because it is evident that he loves your mother so, and hates to be away from her. I get it. I completely understand, because being away from you with no contact for these past few weeks is literally killing me inside.
Elizabeth lifted her eyes and glanced toward the open window, "I've always wanted a love like they share… I love you, Jack." Wiping her eyes for the umpteenth time, she lowered her glance and continued reading.
"I've wanted to tell him that I'm a good guy, a man he can always trust with his daughter, and although I'm not perfect, I'd like him to know that there is not another man alive who could possibly love you more, as completely and as unconditionally, as I do.
I don't know how you feel about me, or if what happened has impacted those feelings. If I could laugh right now, trust me, I'd find my last statement hilarious. It sounds like an elementary school boy throwing out his heart to the girl of his dreams…the beautiful girl with wavy brown hair and an enchanting smile that he fell in love with on the playground. I guess the only things missing are the 'yes' and 'no' boxes that you'd have to decide which to check. Please check 'Yes.'
I'd love to talk with you, but no matter what, please know that you were and will always be the best thing that has ever happened to me… I Love you…I will always love you, Jack"
The envelope still felt slightly weighted. Elizabeth flipped it upside down and watched as a booklet fell onto the bed. Picking it up, the cover said "Just Because… Love, Jack, with pictures of a cartoon girl, and boy with an 'equal' sign, and a heart.
It was almost as if the sun were shining through a spring shower, for Elizabeth's tears wouldn't cease, but she was also laughing as she flipped from one page to the next. Each page was a coupon for things like Game Night, Take a Long Walk Together, Run Your Errands, Romantic Candlelit Dinner, Personal Servant, Your Favorite Dessert, One Chore-Your Choice, and the most important one, No Fighting, No Matter What, among others.
Elizabeth lay back on the bed with Jack's gifts and letter held close to her chest. Flipping to her 'Contacts' on her phone, she scanned up and down the alphabet looking for Jack's Information. She looked up 'J' for Jack, 'T' for Thornton, 'H' for Hunk, 'S' for Sexy, and 'P' for Pilot. She even checked out 'B' for Boyfriend, but still, no luck. She couldn't find his information anywhere on her phone…no phone number, no calls, no texts…no, nothing.
Suddenly she remembered a moment where anger, disappointment, fear, and sadness led her to cut off all contact with him.
Elizabeth immediately dialed the main company office… "Hey Marge; this is Elizabeth. I need to contact Captain Thornton, but I don't have his cell number. Could you get it for me?"
"Sure, Elizabeth, just a minute," Marge placed her call on hold. Returning to the phone, she asked, "Okay, are you ready…"
"You have no idea how ready I am…"
"Excuse me…?"
"Never mind; what's his number…"
"Okay, it's 984-555-2933…"
"Got it; thanks…"
As soon as Elizabeth punched in the number, a message appeared on her screen asking if she wished to 'unblock' the number. As soon as she clicked 'Yes,' prior calls, voicemail and text notifications began scrolling, moving so rapidly that she was unable to keep up. Some of the texts included the following…
"U may have said wat u needed 2, but I haven't. Please meet me somewhere. I'll drive down to Charlotte…is that OK…?"
"Please don't shut me out…call me. N case U don't have my number, it's 984-555-2933.
"Elizabeth, Bella and I want to come C u. U name the time and place, we'll b there…"
"Please call me…"
"I need 2 C U. U name the place and I'll B there…"
She moved forward to the voicemail messages…
Several of the first voicemails were fairly normal, simply asking her to give him a call.
When she didn't return his calls, the messages he left became more emotionally impassioned…
"Elizabeth, I don't know what I can do to make this right. I want to see you; I need to see you. I need to apologize for how I left things between us. Please call me back."
"I told you that I would never give up on a relationship that was important to me. This is important; you are important, but I can't do this all alone. Please let me know that you're okay…"
"Elizabeth, I'm not going to give up. I know you said you didn't want to see me again, but I truly don't believe you meant that. We do need to talk, because everything has been turned upside down, and we need to correct this. Please call me back…"
"Elizabeth, it's me, Jack…but somehow, I think you already know that. I know you're angry, and I know you're hurt, but I can't make things right between us if you won't talk to me. Please call, and I'll be on my way to Charlotte…"
"Hi Elizabeth, it's me, Jack. Look, I'm really trying here, because this is important…you are important to me. We need to talk. I don't like the way things were left between us. I didn't express myself correctly, I admit that, but please give me a chance to make this right. Bella and I really miss you. Call me back, so we can get together and talk…"
Hearing the angst in each of his voicemails, she couldn't listen any longer. Elizabeth pressed his number on her phone, took a deep breath, which she unknowingly held, and waited for the call to connect.
Raleigh-Durham International Airport- Raleigh, NC…
Jack filed his flight plan from Raleigh to Santa Barbara, gassed up the jet, and was outside making a last-minute safety check when his phone, left lying on his seat in the cockpit began to ring. Playing a song, "Wanted," by Hunter Hayes, a specific ringtone which he'd set up only for Elizabeth, woke Bella. Knowing the song and associating it with her momma, Bella happily ran into the cockpit and grabbed his phone, sadly flipping the button and shutting off the ringer when she picked it up in her mouth.
Excitedly taking the phone to Jack, he unknowingly admonished her, "Bella, you know my phone is off limits. Come on, let's get out of here. We have a long flight to find momma…" Jack took his phone from Bella before pulling up the airstairs, securing her on the sofa, and taking his seat in the cockpit.
Thirty minutes later, the Thatcher jet, lovingly nicknamed Gator by Elizabeth, was cruising at 41000 feet, with Jack praying for a tailwind to cut off some of their 5-hour 50-minute flying time.
Jack had barely flown out of North Carolina when Captain Cole and Mr. Thatcher walked through the hangar and into the office. Turning around and walking back into the hangar, Mr. Thatcher called out, "Where's Gator…?"
Captain Cole rushed back out and joined him, "I don't know. Was Jack supposed to take it somewhere, maybe pick someone up for you?"
"No," Mr. Thatcher stated as he pulled his phone from his pocket and called his wife. "Where are you?" his tone was somewhat, short and snappy.
"Well, good afternoon to you…"
"Are you on your way to California to bring Elizabeth home?"
"William, I know you're upset that you didn't hear anything back from Elizabeth, but I think this is just something she feels she needs to do."
"But Gator is gone…so, are you going to get her and bring her home?"
"I'm on my way to the airport to pick you up. Are you already there?" she asked.
"Of course, I'm here. That's how I knew Gator was gone."
"Well, you forgot to call and tell me when you'd be home. I'm pulling onto the tarmac," she stated, skipping over his comment about the missing jet.
"Well, Gator is missing… if you aren't flying somewhere, where is it?" he yelled as their car pulled up to the hangar and he slipped inside. Ending his call as they were now sitting side by side, he asked again, "Did you hear me…Gator is missing."
"Oh, that. I gave Jack permission to take it to California and talk to Elizabeth."
"You what…?" he snapped back at her, "Do you have any idea what you've done?"
"First of all, William, you watch your tone with me."
"I'm sorry, sweetheart. I just don't understand why you did that. Do you have any idea what you've done?" he asked.
"I most certainly do. Do you have any idea what you've done?" she replied.
"What do you mean?"
"William, I believe that our daughter is in love with Captain Thornton."
"No, she's not. She told me that there were no romantic feelings between them."
"Honey, Captain Thornton is a good man. You need to stop worrying about someone replacing you in Elizabeth's heart, and be thankful when she finds someone who makes her so happy. I think you seem to have forgotten about the young man who fell in love with a girl whose father believed he was no good for her."
"That's not fair, Grace. I was good for you…I am good for you, and besides, your dad finally came to believe that."
"Well, can't you give your daughter the same courtesy?" she asked. "If they stay together, fine, and if they don't it won't be because you interfered."
"But who's interfering now?"
"William, I love you dearly, but Elizabeth is running away. She's running as far away as she can from the feelings she has for Jack…uh, Captain Thornton, because she doesn't want to cause any problems between the two of you. She's miserable, and she's going across country to get away. Do you honestly want that?"
"She is? I didn't know that. I thought she was trying to get away from what happened with Ryan, but I assumed she'd end up back here, close to home."
"She's made her peace with her part in what happened, but maybe not so much with him. She's done some soul-searching, and she's just thankful that the wedding didn't take place."
"Well, me, too," Mr. Thatcher agreed.
"We now know, as I suspected, they were pushed together for ratings, but this situation between her and Jack is different."
"How is it different? I don't see it. I mean, they barely know each other."
"That's where you're wrong. Jack and Elizabeth met years ago at the animal shelter when they were both actually planning to adopt his dog, Bella. They'd met other places, too, but Jack knew her as Elizabeth Standish. You know, it's kind of sweet how they've pined for one another."
"Grace, I think you're going a bit too far. I don't know that I've seen either of them doing any pining…" Mr. Thatcher stated before staring out the window, remembering the attempts Jack made to talk with him.
"Well, whether you noticed it or not, it's been happening. Both of them are miserable without the other."
"Is he bringing her home?"
"I don't know. We'll have to wait and see, but I'll tell you this, Jack Thornton is a good man, and I expect you to at least give him a chance…"
"I'll try…"
"William, I think if you have an honest conversation with Elizabeth and you realize how much she loves him, you'll do more than just try…"
Solvang Alisal Vacation Cottages- Solvang, California…
Elizabeth was obviously disappointed that she couldn't reach Jack, but she also knew what she had to do. Her next call was to Andy Whitley.
"Hey Andy; I really appreciate the interview. The offer is more than fair, and truly quite exciting, but I have some personal things I need to take care of before I commit to anything. So, I appreciate everything, but I guess I'll have to decline at this time."
"Elizabeth, we really would like to have you out here. What if we gave you some time to take care of your personal business at home," Andy offered. "Would you consider our offer then?"
"Andy, I can't guarantee anything. But if you can give me a week, I'll certainly give it some serious thought."
"Okay, you've got it. Are you changing your flight arrangements and flying home early?" he asked.
"Well, I do have some offers for interviews in LA and San Diego, but…"
"We'll offer you more money," he advised.
"That's nice, and I certainly wouldn't turn it down, but I don't think I'll go for those interviews. If I'm going to move out there, this is the kind of place I'd love to be."
"Okay, well when did you want to head back to Charlotte?"
"I think I'll head to the airport today, and see what I can work out," Elizabeth replied. "I'll get a rental and drive myself, so don't worry about me. Oh, but while I'm thinking about it, what is the salary offer?"
"Well, we can go up $5,000 on each, so $75,000 for the reporter position, and $105,000 when you take over the show," Andy responded. "Oh, and while I'm thinking about it, the flights in and out of Santa Barbara are a lot less frequent than at LAX, so, if you want to fly out today, you may need to check LAX instead."
"Okay, thanks for letting me know, and I'll think about your offer. Thank you so much for everything, Andy. It was really great seeing you again."
"It was really great seeing you, too. I look forward to hearing from you within the week."
"Okay; take care."
"You, too. Safe flight."
Her next calls were to the stations in San Diego, and Los Angeles thanking them for the opportunities but declining the interviews at this time. As she hung up the phone from each call, she was thankful as each station manager asked her to contact them if her situation changed. Somehow it left her an 'out' if by some chance things didn't work out with Jack.
Elizabeth got her stuff together and called Dollar Car Rental for a ride to their business. While there, Elizabeth rented a blue Ford Edge SUV. Once the paperwork was completed, she loaded her vehicle and, while waiting to be released from the enclosed holding area, she again called Jack.
The call went immediately to his voicemail, and she did, as he had done countless times before, she left a message…
"Jack, it's me, Elizabeth. I got your letter…it was beautiful, and so were the gifts. Look, I'm on my way home. Are you still willing to talk?"
She made her way to US-101 N, turned on the radio and thought about Jack during her two-hour 23-minute drive to LAX, which due to traffic turned into four-hours 37 minutes. If she wasn't sure before, the traffic in LA showed her that Southern California, although beautiful, and she could certainly get behind the lovely, warm weather, was too hectic for her.
Although she was certain that the radio stations she tuned into played various songs, it just seemed as though the only song she literally heard was "I'm a Mess" by Avril Lavigne…
Starin' at the pavement alone
Wishin' I was on my way home to you
All the shops in London are closed
And I don't know where to go from here
No, I don't know where to go from here
But I know I'm a mess, I'm a mess when we're not together
Such a wreck, such a wreck, I hope it's not forever
Will I see you again?
I wish it was me and you 'til the end
But I know I'm a mess, I'm a mess
I know I'm a mess, I'm a mess
It hasn't been the same since that night (oh)
I wish I said "I love you" just one more time (one more time)
I tried to figure out how to make it right
But I don't know where to go from here
No, I don't know where to go from here
But I know I'm a mess, I'm a mess when we're not together
Such a wreck, such a wreck, I hope it's not forever
Will I see you again? (See you again)
I wish it was me and you 'til the end
But I know I'm a mess, I'm a mess
I know I'm a mess, I'm a mess
Oh, 'cause I know that I have my issues
The less we talk, the more I miss you
I die just a little, die just a little
I'm slippin' closer to the edge
I hear your voice, it's in my head
But you're gone again, gone again
I'm a mess, I'm a mess when we're not together
Such a wreck, such a wreck, I hope it's not forever
Will I see you again? (See you again)
I wish it was me and you 'til the end
'Cause I know I'm a mess, I'm a mess
I know I'm a mess, I'm a mess
Elizabeth stopped along Highway 1, needing a short break to stretch her legs, but if she were being completely honest with herself, she really wanted to call Jack again. She parked her car, walked down a path to the beach and stood momentarily mesmerized by the sound of the waves crashing onshore.
Elizabeth pulled out her phone and tapped Jack's contact information. Oddly, she didn't hear the number connect or ring on his end, and it immediately went to voicemail, forcing her to again leave a message. Although she couldn't imagine him writing her such a beautiful letter only to block her calls, she was now getting a taste of the medicine she'd been feeding him for the past few weeks.
She inhaled the salt air deeply several times before following the path to the street. Climbing back into her car, and heading for Los Angeles International Airport.
She turned in her rental car off-site and hopped onto a bus for the fifteen-minute ride to the terminal.
Los Angeles International Airport…
Once at the airport, she felt some relief as she was at least where she needed to be. She couldn't imagine dealing with these crowds and traffic on a regular basis, and was looking forward to getting home and finding Jack.
It didn't surprise Elizabeth that everywhere she looked, every hallway, every carrier's ticket area, every waiting space, restaurant, shop, TSA area and even the smallest nook and cranny was crowded, and Elizabeth stood in line for over an hour waiting to simply be told that there were no flights available.
She took a seat to wait until the shift change occurred and she could present her request to another ticket agent, one who may be more receptive to her predicament.
Thatcher Jet- Approaching air space controlled by the Santa Barbara control tower…
During the flight, Bella slipped into the cockpit and laid down beside Jack's seat. "Hey girl, we'll be there soon. We'll find your mom…we've got to find her," Jack stated, as Bella sat quietly, listening to Jack talk to her about Elizabeth…
"I can't believe how she has turned my world upside down. Before her, I dated other women…beautiful, wonderful women, but when we split, I was fine…it was the right thing to do. But then she came along. She opened my eyes to feelings I have never felt before, and then she disappeared. No woman I have ever met has come close to touching me as deeply as she has. Every dream I have is about her; every plan I make is done so with her in mind, and I don't see my life being anything without her in it. I have literally been miserable these last few weeks without her." Jack looked down and softly laughed at Bella, "And the way you've been huffing and puffing, I'm sure you're miserable, too." He glanced down and rubbed the top of Bella's head, "I love you so much, but your momma touched something so deep inside me, and I can't walk away…I won't walk away."
Bella nudged Jack's leg, "Hey girl… you need to go back and get in a seat. It's looking a bit soupy out here." He watched as she placed her front feet on his arm rest and kissed his cheek before leaving the cockpit.
Checking his instruments, it didn't look like the weather would be clearing before time for him to land. Twelve miles outside of Santa Barbara airport, Jack contacted air traffic control for landing instructions…
"Santa Barbara Tower, November 550 Golf Alpha, Gulfstream G550, request landing instructions."
"Negative, November 550 Golf Alpha, fog is deep, re-routing traffic at this time to LAX…Santa Barbara Tower."
"Santa Barbara Tower, re-routing to LAX, November 550 Golf Alpha…Over!"
Jack released a hard breath, "In a State this big, please let me find her…"
It took an additional hour to fly from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles. Knowing that Elizabeth was in Solvang, he was aware that the drive would be several hours, but once out of the fog, and in auto pilot, Jack reserved a rental car, hoping to at least cut down on the time he'd have to wait for a vehicle.
Once the fog disappeared, the flight from Santa Barbara to LAX was uneventful. He landed, secured the jet and he and Bella headed inside the terminal.
Los Angeles International Airport…
Jack and Bella made their way through the crowds, and with him knowing that they had a long drive to Solvang, he was looking for the quickest path to the car rental courtesy buses.
American Airlines Ticket Counter…
Elizabeth waited for a slight break in what had been a consistently long line. She approached the new ticket agent, acting as if this were her first time asking for flight information.
"Hi, I was supposed to leave out of Santa Barbara in two days, but I'm trying to get a flight to the east coast before then. Would you be able to help me?"
"Where on the east coast are you headed…I mean, can you narrow it down a bit?"
"Well, I really need to get to Raleigh, North Carolina…it's important."
The ticket agent, wearing a name tag that identified her as April, began checking her computer. "I'm not really seeing anything available right now. I mean, I may be able to put you on a stand-by flight, but with those, you still end up taking your chances."
"I can't believe this…I guess it's just my luck."
"May I ask, is this an emergency?" April inquired.
"Maybe not to you or anyone else here, and," she leaned closer to April, "I guess it's more like a love emergency."
"Oh, honey, are you trying to get away from somebody, or get back to them?" April asked.
As tears filled her eyes, "I need to get home. I have to apologize to someone…"
"He's important, huh?"
"Very. I haven't had contact with him in weeks and he wrote me this beautiful letter, and," Elizabeth reached inside her bag.
Searching through her purse for the gifts Jack sent her, she stopped when someone asked, "Excuse me, are you wearing Sexual Sugar?"
Shocked, Elizabeth responded, "Uh, um, yes. someone incredibly special gave it to me."
"He's a lucky guy…you are quite captivating…" the man stated. "May I be of some assistance here?"
"Sir," April turned her attention from Elizabeth to the young man, "what makes you think you can help?"
"I'm sorry, but I hate to see a beautiful woman in distress," glancing down beside him he quickly added, "Right, Bella…?" her tail began wagging as she held tightly to her favorite shark stuffed animal. Jack was thankful beyond measure to finally put his eyes on Elizabeth, but still genuinely concerned by her tears. He leaned closer and softly inhaled her enchanting perfume, "Are you okay?"
"Excuse me sir, but she isn't talking to you right now," April blurted out. "I'm not sure what you think you can do to help, but we have this under control. So, if you would like help with your own ticket, please stand in line or better yet you can move over, and Cari, over in the next line, will be more than happy to help you."
Elizabeth said nothing, finding herself both shocked and stunned to find Jack standing only a few feet away from her.
Jack held onto Bella's leash as she danced from side to side, pulling hard to get to Elizabeth. "No ma'am, I don't need help with a ticket. I actually have access to a jet, and I just thought that I could be of some assistance to this beautiful lady."
"You have access to a jet…?" Elizabeth asked.
"I sure do; it's parked right outside," he responded with a broad smile which seemed to deepen the dimples in his cheeks that Elizabeth loved so much. "My sidekick and I will be glad to take you wherever you want to go…"
"You aren't believing this guy, are you…I have a jet and it's parked outside, really dude? April laughed. "WOW, I thought I'd heard every line there is, but I've gotta say, that's a new one. So, is your jet parked outside by the curb?" April asked with a chuckle. Turning her attention back to Elizabeth, she asked, "Ma'am, focus on what you told me. I know you're desperate to get home, but you don't even know this guy…"
"Ma'am, the jet is out on the tarmac…feel free to take a look. It's a Gulfstream 550…"
"Gator," Elizabeth whispered. "Really…you really have access to a jet? I mean, that's like a miracle, because there's someone on the east coast that I need to get home to…I owe him an apology." Elizabeth advised and as tears rolled down her cheeks, she added, "An incredibly huge apology."
Without thinking about those standing around intently watching, Jack reached up and with his thumbs, he gently brushed away her tears. He smiled through his own misty eyes, "Hmm, that's ironic; Bella and I are here to apologize to someone, too. Well, actually, just me. My sidekick is perfect…she never has to apologize. So, is it a special guy you need to apologize to?"
"It is a special guy, so, sir, your services here aren't needed. Please, I have this under control," April sternly remarked.
Unable to break the 'trance' between the two, "Excuse me, ma'am…" April called out, doing her best to get Elizabeth's attention.
"Are you done here; I'll be glad to take you…" Jack responded.
"Sir, she's not going anywhere with you," April firmly remarked. Momentarily turning away, she said, "Hey, Dave, can you handle this line for a few minutes. I need to have a chat with this woman."
April stepped out from behind the counter and took hold of Elizabeth's arm, "Let's go over here," she stated as they left Jack and Bella standing nearby.
Turning her attention to Elizabeth, she asked, "What the hell is your problem? Didn't your parents ever teach you about stranger-danger?"
"Of course, they did, but look at him! He's gorgeous!"
"Well, I don't recall stranger-danger being okay if he's gorgeous…and he really is, but that's not the point; you just can't go with him."
Elizabeth asked in a soft voice, "Didn't you see his dimples…"
April released a breath, "I sure did, but I think Jack the Ripper had dimples, too. Well, I might be lying about that part, I don't know. I'll admit he's gorgeous…the way he fills out those trousers. Mmm," she shook her head, doing her best to break the spell he'd unknowingly cast upon her. Turning Elizabeth back to face her, she added, "But he probably has a gun in his pocket."
Elizabeth glanced over at Jack. Her eyes scanned him from head to toe and upward again. Gently shaking her head, she smiled, "That's not a gun!"
"Look, I'll admit that he is most likely the best-looking guy I've seen in quite some time, but that doesn't mean he's not a serial killer. I'm sorry, but I can't let you get on a plane with him…that is if he even has one."
"But, April, he's got a dog…"
"WOW, you east coast girls really live in a different world," she released a hard breath, "Honey, he may be gorgeous, and I'll admit, he is, but that doesn't mean he won't take you some place and no one will ever see you again. Besides, what about the guy you're trying to get home to…did you forget about him?"
"No, I could never forget about him…"
"Well, you could have fooled me. You seem to be a bit on the fickle side, wouldn't you say?" April remarked.
"Huh…" Elizabeth responded, unable to take her eyes off Jack and Bella.
"Give me a minute and I'll find you a flight, but please, you don't know this guy and I would never forgive myself if I let you leave with him, and something happened to you…"
Elizabeth smiled at Jack as he and Bella impatiently waited. Unable to hold back her laughter any longer, she turned back toward April.
"What are you laughing for?" April asked.
"That's him…"
"I know that's him. He's the guy I'm trying to protect you from."
"No, I mean, that's the guy…he's the one I'm trying to get home to…"
"He's what…?"
"That's the guy I need to apologize to."
"But what is he doing here?"
"If I'm lucky, he came here looking for me…"
"Well, from what it looks like, you're one fortunate girl. Go get him before someone else tries to steal him, and trust me, out here, they will…" she stated. As Elizabeth started to walk away, April took her arm and turned her back to face her. Leaning closer, she whispered, "Enjoy the make-up sex…you lucky thing you."
"Oh, but we aren't having…oh, never mind, I will," Elizabeth stated as she ran back to Jack.
Those standing by who had watched, and listened to the interaction were shocked when Elizabeth ran back to Jack and Bella. He picked her up in his arms and as if no one else were around their lips, so hungry for each other, met. Those gathered nearby looked around for it was as if fireworks, noticeable to everyone were exploding at the American Airlines ticket counter.
Placing her feet back on the ground before releasing her lips, Jack took hold of her hand, and they ran down the hall beside the ticket counter, not sure where they were going, but knowing they needed to be away from prying eyes. As they turned the corner and disappeared, the crowd, not certain what had just happened, began cheering and clapping.
April returned to the counter, and as everyone stared, she remarked, "He flew all the way from the east coast to apologize to her…all while she was trying to get back to the east coast to apologize to him." Before the next person could approach the counter, April shook her head and muttered, "Lucky girl…"
Slipping out the side door, Jack led Elizabeth and Bella to a small park, usually used for exercising dogs prior to flights. Finding the area empty, he turned her to face him. Dropping Bella's leash, his hands cradled her face, "Elizabeth Thatcher, I love you. I don't want another minute to go by without you knowing that."
As tears rolled down her cheeks, Elizabeth did her best to catch her breath. "Jack, I'm so…"
His finger touched her lips, "Shh, I don't want to hear anything unless you're planning to tell me that you love me, too."
She smiled, "Jack, I'm so in love with you, but I…"
"Elizabeth, there are no buts…"
"I need to apologize."
"You know what, there will be time to talk later. Right now, all I want to do is stare into your beautiful blue eyes, and kiss those lips I've been aching to touch." Jack stepped closer, as if that were even possible, and his hand slipped behind her neck. With one hand cradling the back of her head and the other around her waist, he wasn't about to let her go.
His lips tenderly pressed against hers as they stood in the park, oblivious to those walking across the skywalk who had stopped and were staring at them out the windows.
Elizabeth's tears continued to fall as Jack's lips just as quickly kissed them away. "I can't believe you're here…how, what, why…?"
"Your mom came to see me, and offered to let me take Gator."
"Let me guess, my dad was out of town…"
"He's back now, I'm sure, and he's probably issued an APB for the jet…especially now that I'm no longer employed by Thatcher Industries."
Elizabeth stepped back, "No, Jack, you loved that job."
"I love you so much more. I can get a job somewhere else. Besides, a lot depends on where you're going to be; did you take the job?"
"I was offered a job with the station in Solvang, but I decided not to interview with the stations in San Diego and Los Angeles."
"Did you accept the job?" he asked, knowing that her answer would have a big impact on where his life went from here.
"Well, I asked if I could sleep on the offer and let them know tomorrow, but then I went back to my cottage, and I found your package, and…" her tears began flowing. Her words were mumbled as she tried talking through her tears.
He led her to a bench and as Bella refused to leave their side, they took a seat, and he held Elizabeth close as they both cried.
Leaning back slightly, she observed Jack's emotions, several weeks' worth, finally spilling to a head. "I'm so sorry, Jack…I'm so sorry; can you ever forgive me?"
"I already have. Can you forgive me?" he asked as his lips continued to kiss her cheeks, catching each tear as it fell.
"There's nothing to forgive. I'm just so sorry for everything."
"Well, I know you were planning to fly home, but since you don't have to, what do you want to do? I mean, are you going to accept the job offer?"
"What do you think I should do?" she asked.
"It's not up to me…"
"But it does impact you; it impacts us…"
"What is your gut telling you to do?" he asked.
"I'm listening to my heart right now. Jack, if I take the job, and I'm not saying I want it, but if I take it, will you come with me?"
Jack smiled, deepening his already pronounced dimples. He leaned in and kissed her forehead, "Bella and I are not about to let you get away again. So, if you want us here, we'll come with you."
Again, her tears began falling uncontrollably. Never before had any man put her feelings and wants above his own, "I don't care where we are, I just want to be with both of you."
"Well, maybe we should plan on flying home. I'm sure your parents would love to see you, and your dad probably has some choice words for me…and I guess, as a father, I can't blame him."
Elizabeth pulled out her phone.
"What are you doing?" he asked.
"I'm calling my mom," she stated as she waited on the call to connect. "Hey, mom…"
"Hey honey, how are you? Did you get the job?"
"I'm good, and yes, I was offered a job with the Solvang station, but I haven't decided whether or not I'm going to take it."
"So, what are you doing…are you alone?"
"Mom," and again her tears began rolling down her cheeks as Jack's arm around her shoulders pulled her close. "Thank you for letting Jack bring Gator out here…I love you."
"Have you two had a chance to talk?"
"There has been a little bit of talking…actually, a little bit more kissing than talking," Elizabeth advised, a statement that caused Jack's eyes to widen.
"Honey, your dad is here, and he wants to talk to you…"
"Mom, I don't…" Elizabeth started to speak.
"Elizabeth…"
"Oh, hi, daddy…"
"Are you okay?"
"I am now…"
"Can you answer something for me?" her father asked.
"I'll try; what is it?"
"Do you love him…?"
"Daddy…"
"Please, just answer my question. Do you love him…?"
"Yes sir, I do…"
Always a softy when it comes to his daughters, Mr. Thatcher felt his own eyes watering. "You know, your mom always accuses me of being too hard on you girls regarding the men in your lives. But honey, it's so hard to let you go."
His emotion, exacerbated hers, "Daddy, I know you worry about me, but just think, now you have someone to share that worry with."
"May I speak to Captain Thornton?" he asked.
Nervously, she responded, "D…addy."
"I'm not angry, honey. Your mom and I have been talking for the past few hours…well, if I'm honest, she's been doing most of the talking, and I've had to listen to some real hard truths. I've also had to admit that I'm not always fair with the men in you and your sisters' lives. So please, I just need to talk to him."
Elizabeth held out the phone, "My dad wants to talk to you."
Jack swallowed hard before reaching for the phone, "Hello, Mr. Thatcher…"
"Captain Thornton…I'm sorry, I don't even know what to call you now…"
"Sir, Jack is preferred, but if you don't feel comfortable, Captain Thornton is okay, too."
"Okay, Jack, I just have one question to ask you, "Are you in love with Elizabeth?"
Jack thought, WOW, that's an easy question to answer, "Yes sir; I love her very much…"
"Well, actually, I guess I have a few more questions to ask you."
"Yes, sir. You ask what you feel you need to…" Jack responded as he stood from the bench, and handed Bella's leash to Elizabeth before walking a short distance away. "Go ahead, sir…"
"Was this what you've been trying to talk to me about for the past few weeks?"
"Yes, sir. Mr. Thatcher, I know you hired me as a pilot and to watch over Elizabeth while she was alone in Fiji, and I promise you, nothing inappropriate happened between us. But…I need to be honest with you; I've actually known Elizabeth for quite awhile and I have been in love with her for years. The thing is, it wasn't until she walked up to the jet for the trip to Fiji that I learned Elizabeth Standish and Elizabeth Thatcher were one in the same person."
Jack turned away from Elizabeth, nervously walking several more feet away, "Mr. Thatcher, are you still there?"
"I'm here, Jack…"
"Sir, I made a really stupid mistake and allowed Elizabeth to walk away before thinking that I cared more about my job than I do her. Although I love my job, and I really do appreciate the opportunity you gave me, I will never make that mistake again. Elizabeth will always know that she comes first with me."
Hearing Jack's last statement, which was unsolicited by any prodding or questions, Mr. Thatcher smiled, "Choosing won't be necessary, Jack. You are an incredibly talented pilot, and I would like for you to remain a valued employee of the company."
"Sir, I appreciate the confidence you have in me, but until I know what Elizabeth's plans are, I cannot accept," Jack admitted. "If she wants the job out here, I'll be going with her."
"I understand, and her mother has made me realize that I can't rule her life. I have to trust in her decisions, and just be here to help any way I can. But to be honest, I do hope she comes home, but if she doesn't, it's nice to know that you'll be there to protect her," Mr. Thatcher replied.
"Jack," Elizabeth called out, "I need to talk to my mom before you hang up…"
Jack returned his attention to Mr. Thatcher, "Sir, Elizabeth would like to speak to her mom again…"
Jack walked back and handed the phone to Elizabeth.
"Hey mom," Elizabeth stared at Jack as she spoke, "um, do you mind if we stay out here for a few days. I mean, is Gator needed at home?"
"No, as I told Jack, Gator isn't flying anywhere for eight days…" she responded, smiling at the sense of excitement she noted in Elizabeth's voice. "Where are you going…is it okay if I ask?"
"Of course, it's okay for you to ask," Elizabeth replied. "Well, I haven't talked with Jack, so I don't even know if he can stay, but I've never been out on the west coast before this trip, and I think we just need some time to be alone and figure all of this out."
"Honey, you two take the time you need," her mother's understanding tone put Elizabeth more at ease.
"Mom, I love you and daddy so much, and thank you for what you did. I don't know what it was," Elizabeth became emotional as tears rolled down her cheeks, "but, thank you…"
"Honey, you and Jack love each other; there's no doubt in my mind," her mother remarked, "but whatever happens from here will be between you and Jack. Your father and I will stay out of it."
"But mom, will daddy give Jack a chance?"
"Honey, he tore up Jack's letter of resignation, if that tells you anything."
"I love you both, and I'll call you when we decide what we're going to do."
Once the call ended, Elizabeth's eyebrows raised, "So, do you have to go home right away, or do you think we could spend a few days alone out here?"
"Is that a trick question…?"
