Chapter 34

As the night enveloped the forest, Bella launched herself out of her window with an exhilarating leap, her lithe form slicing through the air. Her senses were heightened, her sharp eyes scanning the darkness as she raced through the forest. The thrill of the hunt consumed her, and with each stride, she pushed herself faster and harder, feeling the wind whipping through her hair and the leaves rustling beneath her feet. Running through the woods made her feel alive, invigorated with a rush of energy that only the thrill of the chase could bring.

With practiced ease, Bella tuned into the sounds of the forest, her keen senses searching for any sign of prey. She spotted a deer in the distance, its rhythmic heartbeat beckoning to her. Without hesitation, she sprinted towards it, her movements fluid and graceful. The animal didn't even have a chance to react before she took it down instantly, sparing it any unnecessary pain.

As Bella drank the deer's blood, she savored the taste as it flowed down her throat. It was an indulgence that only vampires could experience, and one that she had come to relish. With each swallow, her body was filled with a surge of energy and vitality, making her feel more alive than ever before. The hunt and the feed were primal experiences that she enjoyed to the fullest, and the feeling of strength and power that followed was unmatched. She closed her eyes and let out a low, contented purr as the blood flowed into her veins, the world around her fading away into nothingness.

As Bella neared the end of her meal, a sound caught her attention. It resembled a stampede in the forest, and the scent that followed confirmed her suspicions. She knew what was about to happen. Dropping the dead deer to the ground, Bella turned around to see a massive wolf break out from the trees and leap towards her, poised to tear her apart. But Bella's reflexes were faster, and she quickly erected a shield to protect herself. The wolf rammed into it and fell back to the ground. Bella, seething with anger at being threatened, placed more shields around the wolf to contain it within a small enclosure. Despite her fury, Bella didn't want to harm the wolf, and she tried to calm down.

"Stop growling, you mutt! What the hell is your problem?" Bella yelled at the wolf, who continued to move around in her shield like a caged beast. "Why did you attack me? I wasn't in your territory, and I didn't provoke you in any way. And who are you, anyway? I don't remember your wolf forms beyond Jake's."

As the wolf continued to growl, Bella's annoyance grew. "Answer me!" she demanded, "Turn into a human right now. And make sure you turn around to put some clothes on, I don't want to see anything swinging!"

The wolf released another loud growl before pivoting around. Bella caught a glimpse of him shifting and pulling up a pair of shorts that were tied around his ankle. As he turned, she recognized him instantly.

"I should have guessed it was you, Paul. You're always so hot-headed and impulsive. Why did you try to attack me?" Bella glared at the man with contempt.

"You were always on the side of those bloodsuckers, and now you're one of them. I knew this would happen to you. We hunt and kill your kind, leech. Let me go right now!" Paul shouted.

Bella looked at Paul with a mix of anger and disbelief. "Still the sweet talker I see," she said sarcastically. "Paul, was I harming a human right now? Was I on your land?" she asked, gesturing to the forest around them. "What's that over there? It's a deer. You had no right to attack me. What were you thinking? If I had been another vampire, they could have killed you in a second for attacking."

Paul scoffed at her words. "Hah. We kill your kind. I don't have to answer to you. I don't know what you've done to me, probably hexed me with your voodoo or something. Let me go," he yelled.

Bella shook her head in disbelief. She didn't remember the wolves being this stupid. "Listen, dipshit," she said, her patience wearing thin. "I'll let you go when I think you can have a rational conversation. And from where I'm standing, that might take a while. I assume the others saw your act of stupidity. Are they on their way?"

"No, I was the only one on patrol," Paul replied. "We actually haven't had any leech sightings since your precious Cullens left. We came and saw how their home was destroyed. We hoped that someone had ended them."

Bella sighed with relief as she saw Paul's anger start to dissipate. "No, that actually was me. It was an accident," Bella still felt bad about that one.

"You? How could you destroy the house?" Paul asked, still clearly confused.

Bella decided to show him. Maybe it would make him and the pack think twice about starting something with her in the future. She looked at the two trees behind Paul and caused two good-sized explosions, causing both trees to fall to the ground.

Paul's eyes widened in surprise as he watched the display. "Wow," he said, clearly impressed.

Bella took a deep breath and continued, "So you see, Paul. I'm trying hard to make you understand. If I wanted you dead, you would be. I can do a lot more than this, Paul. I'd like to be friends with the pack again. I don't feed on humans. I'm just here visiting Charlie. Can we sit down and have a peaceful conversation, Paul? I had planned to talk to Jake tomorrow, but I guess I can tell my story to you instead."

Paul looked reluctant but sat down and listened while Bella told him her story.

When she finished, the sun had already begun to peek over the horizon. "Listen, Paul. I'm going to let you go now. Do I have your word that you will behave?" Bella asked, hoping to avoid any further confrontation.

Paul hesitated for a moment before reluctantly agreeing, "I won't attack you now. That's the best I can give you. You need to speak with Jake our Alpha."

Bella nodded, relieved that he had agreed to stand down. "Tell him to call Charlie's after he's gone to work, and we can set a time to meet. I need to get back so Charlie doesn't see me missing from my room. Always a pleasure, Paul," she said before taking off back to her room.

Later that morning, when the phone rang, Bella picked it up and answered, "Hello, Swan residence."

There was a moment of silence before Jake's deep voice filled the line. "Bella."

"Hey, Jake. Long time no talk," Bella said, feeling a mix of hope and longing for their past friendship.

"Paul told me what happened. I guess I thought you changed your mind when Charlie said you broke up with that asshole and were having a great time in college," Jake said, his voice tinged with disappointment.

"Well, Jake, it's possible to do all that and be a vampire. Could we meet? I want to be square with the pack so I can visit Charlie without having to look over my shoulder," Bella said, hoping for a peaceful resolution.

"Sure, Bella. Let's meet where you met Paul last night. See you there in 30 minutes," Jake agreed.

Bella arrived at the spot, determined to have a peaceful meeting. Unfortunately, she had to go through most of the same things she did with Paul, but with a little more understanding from Jake. It wasn't the reunion she had hoped for, but by the end of the day, they had come to an agreement that was similar to the one between the wolves and the Cullens. Although they weren't the best of friends, they were no longer enemies.

On Friday night, Bella was having dinner with Sue and Charlie when she decided to ask him something. "Hey, dad. I was thinking, tomorrow we could do something together. How about we go fishing at your favorite spot?"

Charlie was surprised by her request. He had been trying to convince Bella to go fishing with him for almost 20 years ever since she fell into the water as a little girl. "Really, Bells? You want to go fishing with me?"

"Yeah, I know it's not really my thing, but I want to spend time with you and I know how much you enjoy it, so why not? Plus, I highly doubt I'm going to fall in the water again." Bella said, grinning.

Charlie couldn't believe his ears. "Well, I'm thrilled! I can't wait to spend some quality time with you. I usually leave at 5am though. Is that too early for you to get up?"

"For you, dad, I'll be up at 4:30!" Bella replied with a laugh, happy to see her father's excitement.

The next morning, Bella carefully slipped into her favorite pair of jeans and a light blue blouse. She had been looking forward to spending the day with her father and had planned something special for when they returned home.

Bella and Charlie arrived at his favorite fishing spot, where he had a small boat anchored at the lake's edge. They climbed aboard, and soon they were cruising through the calm waters, enjoying the peacefulness of the lake. They didn't need to talk much. Being together was enough.

Charlie had more luck catching fish than Bella, but she still managed to reel in a few. They even caught sight of some wild animals that had come to drink at the lake. By the time they headed back, they had caught enough fish to last them for weeks.

During the ride home, they chatted about nothing in particular, just enjoying each other's company. When they arrived home, Charlie thanked Bella for coming along. "Fishing may not be your thing, but I really enjoyed myself with you today. It was a good memory."

"I had a great time too, Dad," Bella replied. "Why don't you put the fish in the freezer and come into the living room? I have a surprise for you."

Charlie's eyes lit up with curiosity. "A surprise? I can't wait to see what it is!"

When Charlie came into the living room, he saw Bella and Sue waiting for him. He sat down in his usual chair and noticed a large flat box sitting next to the fireplace.

"What's in the box, Bells?" Charlie was curious.

"I made you something when I was in Paris. I had it shipped to Forks and picked it up yesterday. Here you go, Dad." Bella opened the box and took out the wrapped painting and handed it to Charlie, smiling at him.

Charlie took the large wrapped gift and started to unwrap it. As he peeled away the wrapping paper, he felt a growing sense of anticipation. When he was done, he was stunned. It was a beautiful painting of Bella and him fishing on his boat. It mirrored exactly what they had just done today, almost as if it was a snapshot. The level of detail was amazing, and he could see himself and Bella in vivid colors, surrounded by the peaceful lake.

For a moment, Charlie was speechless. He looked at Bella, then back at the painting. "This is… incredible, Bells. You really captured us. It's like we're there, fishing on the lake."

Bella smiled. "I'm glad you like it, Dad. I wanted to give you something that would remind you of our day together."

Charlie gazed at the painting, taking in every detail. "You know, I've been fishing in that spot for over 20 years, and I've never seen it look so beautiful. You've got a real talent, Bells."

Bella smiled. "Thanks, Dad. It wasn't easy, but I wanted to do something special for you."

Charlie looked back at the painting and noticed something that made him laugh. "You're even wearing the same clothes in the painting, Bells. You thought of everything, didn't you."

Bella nodded smiling. "Of course, Dad. I had to get all the details right for the painting."

Charlie put the painting down and stood up to hug Bella tightly. "I really love the painting, Bella. I will treasure it always. Thank you." He pulled away and looked at her with a twinkle in his eye. "You know, I think you might have a future as an artist."

Bella grinned. "Oh, I'm sure at some point in my life, I will be an artist."

Charlie chuckled. "Well, whatever you do, I know you'll be great at it. And I'll always have this painting to remind me of our day together. It was a really special memory."

Bella hugged him back. "I'm glad we could do the real thing again, Dad. It really was exactly as I had envisioned it. A fun day with my dad."

Sue smiled at the scene, happy to see Charlie and Bella bonding. "You two make a great team," she said, earning a grin from both Charlie and Bella.

Later that night, Seth, Sue's son, joined us for dinner at Charlie's house. He seemed to be more open-minded than the rest of his pack, and everyone had a great time eating as a family together for the first time. Bella took an instant liking to Seth, and when he asked if they could go for a run together the next morning, she eagerly agreed.

The next day, Bella met Seth at the same spot where she had first met Paul. Seth arrived in his human form and greeted her warmly. "Thanks for meeting me, Bella," he said. "I've always wondered what it would be like to run with a vampire. Wolves and Vampires have been enemies for so long, and I thought it would be cool to experience something different."

Bella smiled. "I'm up for it. Let's see who's faster."

Seth darted into the woods, and soon reemerged in his wolf form. Bella took a deep breath and focused her senses, feeling the cool breeze and the rustling leaves as she prepared to race.

They took off through the dense forest, the ground shaking beneath them as they raced at breakneck speed. Bella was surprised at how exhilarating it felt to run alongside a wolf, and she pushed herself to keep up with Seth. The trees blurred past them, and the scent of the forest filled her nose.

As they raced deeper into the woods, Seth suddenly veered off course and Bella followed, unsure of what he had seen. They emerged into a clearing, and Bella gasped at the stunning sight before her. A waterfall cascaded down into a crystal-clear pool, surrounded by wildflowers and lush greenery.

Seth let out a howl of excitement, and Bella laughed in response. They raced around the clearing, leaping over rocks and splashing through the shallow water. The cool mist from the waterfall brushed against their skin, and Bella loved the beauty of this place.

As they reached the edge of a cliff that overlooked the vast expanse of the ocean, Bella stopped, taking in the breathtaking view before her. The crashing waves below and the salty breeze in the air was a welcome change from the dense forest.

"Hey, Seth," Bella turned to her soon to be step brother, "I want to talk to you for a bit. Could you go change in the woods for me?" she said, her voice hushed.

Seth, in his wolf form, nodded and disappeared into the dense foliage before emerging minutes later in his human form. "What did you want to talk about, Bella?" he asked, his tone serious.

"We're going to be family once our parents get married, and I wanted to talk to you about keeping our secret from Charlie. It's crucial that he never finds out about vampires or werewolves. If he does, it could be dangerous for him," Bella said, her eyes fixed on the ocean.

"I understand," Seth replied, his expression sympathetic. "We'll do everything in our power to keep him safe and in the dark."

"Thank you, Seth," Bella said, a sense of relief washing over her. "Also, if the pack ever needs help with a vampire problem that they can't handle, please don't hesitate to call me. I might not look it, but I'm powerful and could easily take care of it. I know the pack might be proud and not want to ask for help, but if the situation calls for it, I'm here for you guys."

Seth nodded, a sense of gratitude in his expression. "I appreciate that, Bella. We'll definitely keep it in mind."

As they were talking, a rare sight occurred in Forks: the sun appeared from behind the clouds. Bella's skin started sparkling, and Seth couldn't help but comment on it.

"Wow, that sure is freaky, Bella. It must suck not being able to go out in the sun," Seth said, pretending to shield his eyes.

Bella smiled and said, "Take a look at this." She put her shield around her, and her sparkling stopped.

"Wow. I didn't know vamps could do that. That's cool," Seth said, amazed.

"Oh, they can't do that. I'm just a freak amongst freaks," Bella said, laughing.

Seth chuckled along with her. "Well, you're a pretty cool freak."

Bella chuckled. "Actually, I can do a lot more than that. If you trust me, I can show you something amazing."

"I trust you, Bella. What do you want to show me?" Seth asked, intrigued.

"Okay, now I know this will sound crazy, but if you trust me, I know you'll love this. I want you to walk over to the cliff's edge and keep walking. Trust me," Bella said, a mischievous glint in her eye.

Seth was confused. "What? It must be a 200-foot fall, Bella. What are you playing at?"

"Okay, I guess even trust has its limits without proof. Watch this," Bella said confidently, her eyes sparkling mischievously. With that, she walked up to the cliff's edge and kept walking into the air. Seth's eyes widened in amazement as he watched her stop and turn around, standing ten feet away from the cliff's edge. "There, Seth. Proof. Now don't you want to join me?" Bella said, her smile growing wider.

"Holy shit, Bella! How did you do that?" Seth exclaimed, still in shock. He cautiously approached the edge and lifted one foot off the ground, placing it out into the air. To his surprise, his foot came down and stopped as if it was solid ground. "Wow," he muttered to himself, as he tentatively placed his other foot in front of him and slowly built up his confidence to join Bella far away from the cliff's edge.

"How are you doing this, Bella? This is next level freaky. That sun trick was nothing compared to this," Seth said, still amazed.

"Vampires can have extra abilities. I guess you would think of them as superpowers. I was just lucky enough to get several cool ones," Bella said with a grin. "Now, would you like to go up or down?"

Seth couldn't believe what was happening. "Wow, let's go up I guess," he said, his voice filled with excitement.

"Okay, let's see what happens," Bella said, raising the shield that supported them. Seth felt a rush of air as they slowly made their way up into the sky. At 100 feet, Bella figured it was time to stop. "I think that's good enough. I don't want to go so high that someone might see us. Now that would be hard to explain," she said with a chuckle.

As Seth looked out at the vast expanse of the ocean on one side and the lush greenery of the forest on the other, he couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder and amazement. The sheer scale of it all was almost too much to take in. He turned to Bella, who was floating calmly beside him, and marveled at the beauty of the scene.

"Wow, Bella, this is incredible," he said, his eyes wide with awe. "I never imagined I'd see anything like this. The ocean, the forest, it's all so...breathtaking."

Bella smiled at him, clearly pleased with his reaction. "It's amazing, isn't it?" she said. "Sometimes I forget how lucky we are to be able to experience this kind of beauty firsthand."

Seth nodded, still taking it all in, and he couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and contentment wash over him.

For a few moments, they simply floated there in silence, lost in the beauty of the moment. It was like they were suspended in time, free from the worries and concerns of the world below.

"This is almost like flying. I don't really know what to call this. Can you take us down to the treetops over there?" Seth asked, his eyes scanning the area.

"Emmett once asked if I can fly. The answer is no, although maybe if I got much better with more practice and refined it a lot, it might look like flying. But that would probably take many years to learn. Who knows, maybe in a hundred or two hundred years, I will be able to fly," Bella explained, her eyes sparkling with excitement at the prospect and determining to practice more.

Seth nodded, still trying to take in the breathtaking views of the forest and ocean from their vantage point. "This is incredible, Bella. I never thought I'd get to see the world from up here. It's like a whole new perspective."

Bella grinned, pleased with Seth's reaction. She slowly descended towards the treetops, giving Seth a closer look at the lush greenery. As they floated over the trees, Seth pointed out different animals and birds, marveling at how clear everything looked from up high. After a while, Bella brought them back to the ground, and Seth let out a deep sigh of contentment. "Thank you, Bella. That was something I never thought I would experience. It really was amazing. I can't wait to tell the others. They will be so jealous."

"I'm glad you liked it, Seth. I had fun too," Bella said with a smile. "Let's race home." As Seth transformed back into his wolf form, he and Bella took off, running together side by side. Seth marveled at the fact that he was running alongside a vampire, a creature he once thought was his enemy. But now, as they raced towards home, he couldn't help but feel grateful for this unexpected friendship.
