"Your mission is just escort duty for a week."

"Hai, I'll do my best." Shinobu nodded eagerly.

Mei-sama and Shinobu were in her office. All Shinobu knew was that this was a very important mission and that she was handpicked for it.

She's wearing her full uniform, a dark blue pleated skirt, gray tube top, and Kiri's standard jacket. She also wore fishnet stockings and boots.

Her career as a shinobi was not a remarkable one. Her missions were mostly peppered with C-ranks and D-ranks. There were a few A-rank missions and only one S-rank. Granted, they were difficult missions and Shinobu had to risk life and limb to complete them but she'd done it. Most members of her squads got back safely and only a few of her comrades died on her watch. It was a loss but Shinobu moved past it. So, all in all, she can say that she's a competent shinobi. Though she became a jonin after the Fourth Great Shinobi War, Shinobu still had a need to prove herself.

Since the mission requests dropped in peaceful times, she hadn't gotten many chances to do so. Not until now at least. Shinobu truly meant what she said, she'll do her very best.

"Oh, I expect you to," Mei-sama said, narrowing her eyes at Shinobu.

Shinobu gulped. "Why, that doesn't sound ominous at all, Mei-sama."

"Ominous?" Mei-sama waved a dismissive hand. "That's just your imagination Shinobu-chan."

"By the way you're acting, I don't think so."

"Acting? What do you mean acting? I'm just my beautiful, normal self."

"Your old unmarried self is more like it," Shinobu muttered under her breath.

"What, did you say?"

Shinobu paled and she quickly took a couple of steps back. From the way that Mei-sama was glaring at her and cracking her knuckles, she might not survive long enough to greet their guest.

"N-Nothing, nothing. I didn't say anything!"

"No, I heard you said..."

"Oh... Look at the time Mei-sama," Shinobu said with an unusual high-pitch voice. "I think I heard something. That must be our guest, I'll just go out to greet him now, bye!"

Shinobu turned and ran to safety. Or she tried to at least. On her way out, she bumped into someone. She would have lost her balance but the person reacted quickly and held her elbows to steady her.

"Welcome to Kirigakure, Kazekage-sama," Mei-sama greeted from behind her.

Shinobu's whole body stiffened. She slowly lifted her eyes and they widened like saucers when they met his. Shinobu's whole face was as red as a tomato and she might have gaped a bit.

"Arigato gozaimasu, I am glad to be here," Gaara-sama replied politely.

Why, oh why couldn't the ground swallow her whole right now? To bump into Gaara-sama of all people! Wait... Did Mei-sama just say, welcome?

That means... That means, he's going to be their guest! And she'll be his escort.

But would Mei-sama really trust her with a mission as important as this one? Sure, she's competent but Gaara-sama is a Kage! Not... Not that she's complaining of course.

"Shinobu-chan, Shinobu-chan!" Mei-sama's voice got her attention. "You can let go of him now you know."

Shinobu realized that she was now clinging onto Gaara-sama's shirt and that he was not even holding her elbows anymore. Shinobu quickly let go, muttering apologies all the while. She stepped back until her back hit the wall. She covered her face in embarrassment.

Great, this was just great. He might think she's a fangirl now. Well, she was but... She didn't want to be that obvious! Oh no, what would she say to him?

Wait, will he even speak to her after what happened? Well, he's a Kage so of course he has no choice but to be polite. Gaara-sama is also known to be quiet and a bit indifferent. Maybe, he won't mention it at all? Shinobu's rampaging thoughts halted when she heard him speak.

"I've assigned you with just one escort, I hope you don't mind?" She gestured at Shinobu.

Shinobu's head snapped up just in time to see Mei-sama wink at her. Shinobu's eyes flicked to Gaara-sama and Mei-sama and back again.

So, this is really happening. She's going to escort Gaara-sama! Good thing Shinobu was biting her lips or she would have squealed and embarrassed herself. Shinobu at least managed to nod at the two Kages when they looked at her.

"Not at all," Gaara-sama said, then shrugged.

Shinobu resisted the urge to pat her hair and check her clothes. It's not a date, it's an escort mission. It's not a date, it's an escort mission. It's not a date, it's an escort mission. Shinobu chanted over and over in her head until she calmed down.

A few seconds had passed before Shinobu managed to straighten and introduce herself. It's a good thing that the two were exchanging a bit of news about some Kage business or other, they didn't notice her inattention. "My name is Terumi Shinobu and I will be your escort for the duration of your stay."

Shinobu was proud of herself for not stuttering. Her heart was doing somersaults in her chest. She just hopes her face wasn't still red right now.

She was torn between hugging and strangling Mei-sama. Of course, she was more than happy to be Gaara-sama's escort, but a little warning would have been really, really nice.

"Her family owns an inn and that's where you'll be staying. Shinobu will take you there directly."

"I see." Gaara-sama glanced at Mei-sama, then at her, then back to Mei-sama, raising an invisible brow.

Mei-sama gave an imperceptible nod and clasped her hands together. "We can have the meeting tomorrow; you must be tired."

Taking that as her cue, Shinobu smiled, "Shall we?"

She led the way and Gaara-sama followed her out of the Mizukage's tower and onto the streets of Kiri. She was walking a little ahead of him at first but he caught up to her in no time. Considering that Shinobu just reached his shoulders, she shouldn't be surprised.

Shinobu snuck a glance at him but their eyes met. She turned away quickly with heated cheeks. She'd rather not fall on her face, thank you very much.

Gaara-sama was wearing simple clothes, a cotton shirt, dark pants, and mesh armor on his ankles. A smaller gourd than what he usually carries was strapped on his back. She just noticed it because... Well, it's not like she couldn't take her eyes off of him when he made that speech in the war or anything. That event is just seared in her memory, is all.

She was so scared back then. No, terrified was more like it. Shinobu was not eager to risk her life without having the comfort of comrades that she could trust besides her. But that all change when Gaara-sama spoke.

He united and encouraged them like the great commander that he is. Gaara-sama was prepared to face the enemy to protect his friend. For Shinobu, it's truly an honor to follow someone with that kind of resolve.

She's just glad that they survived the war. Who knew that Shinobu would end up right here, walking beside him? They're not talking, but still, this is an improvement. At least she's looking at him from a few paces away instead of from afar.

His hair was windswept and Shinobu could still smell the sea on him. Although it was subtle, she noticed that Gaara-sama was taking in the sights as much as possible. The twisting streets that they passed, the high buildings with some kind of ladder or stairs at their front, and even how the lightest of mist covered the village at this time of day.

No one paid them much attention, the people of Kiri were busy with their own lives. Today was market day so most people were hurrying along with their baskets. Some of them would buy, others would sell. There were kids running around and playing in the street. The people watching them are shouting or laughing while doing their business.

There was a perpetual cold in the air, it was the norm for the locals but Shinobu thinks that this time, it would rain. There was a certain smell in the air so it made sense. It seems that no one but her noticed though.

Shinobu wanted to explain things to him, she really did. But whenever she opened her mouth to say something, Gaara-sama would look at her and their gazes would meet. She would then get tongue-tied and she'll blush so Shinobu just looked away.

This would be so much easier if he'd just start asking her questions. She'd answer and their conversation would flow from there. Shinobu sighed internally, at least now, she can tell herself that Gaara-sama's not perfect.

They were walking for some time now and the even ground started to change to dirt. Shinobu itched to say something. Anything to break their silence. She was his guide, for goodness sake! So she puffed up her cheeks and decided to take the plunge.

"Our inn is by the foot of a mountain so it can be a bit of a walk," she gestured at the path ahead. "But it's worth it."

"It's fine, I don't mind walking."

"Oh." Shinobu's shoulders slumped and she cast her gaze on the ground once more. What could she say after that? He's certainly not making it easy for her.

They made a few turns and they passed by the market. Food stands peppered the place, the vendors shouting their prices so everyone could hear. They were mostly fish and seafood.

Shinobu was startled when Gaara-sama said, "The food you gave me, it was delicious. My siblings and I liked it very much."

A jolt of happiness run through Shinobu, so he did remember her. And in a good way, thank goodness.

She smiled at him, "Really, I'm glad you liked it. I'd be happy to cook for you anytime, my lord."

Gaara-sama nodded and they resumed their walk in silence. Shinobu's awkwardness lessened though, her shoulders were no longer stiff and her steps weren't as hurried. Also, Shinobu smiled more.

The further they get, the more trees appeared and the fewer houses they saw in this part of the village. They were at the farthest place from the bustling of the town proper so it was quiet and a bit isolated.

There were a few taverns here though and Shinobu told Gaara-sama as much. After climbing on a slight incline, they finally arrived at their destination.

Shinobu waved her hand grandly, "Welcome to Enchanted Fields, Kazekage-sama."

"Enchanted, indeed."

Fields and fields of flowers surrounded the property. Roses, hydrangeas, and honeysuckle, those were just the ones that Gaara could name. The flowers were in different colors and they were strategically planted around the place to highlight its beauty.

To Gaara, it gave off a lively aura. It was refreshing to see after the endless water he'd gone through. Besides, he loved plants.

The inn itself was a traditional-looking building with just three floors. Unlike most of the structures in the village, the inn didn't have elaborate stairs in front.

The attendants greeted them when they walked in and Terumi-san introduced him. They looked eager and likely bursting with questions but she told them to get back to their duties so they murmured their welcomes and scattered. The whole property was made of wood, the walls with rice papers, and there were large windows on the wall, so the sweet scent of flowers followed them inside.

Terumi-san pointed at the front desk, and then a small door on their far right. "That's the dining area."

She then led him to the grand staircase. Gaara noticed that everything was gleaming and he guessed that the place was newly polished, and he bet that it was smooth to touch. When they reached the second floor, Terumi-san turned right and gave him the key to the only room there. It was silver and shaped like a flower.

"This is our best room; I hope you'll like it."

Gaara slid the door open and stared at the room. He stepped in and his feet touched something soft. When he looked down, he saw that it was a tasteful blue rug, depicting a sunrise.

He explored the room, there was a fireplace and some logs beside it. Futons were tucked neatly on the side and a low table was across it, near the balcony. There was a door that looked like the bathroom and beside it, there was an ornate dresser.

Gaara went to the window and parted the mint green curtains to see a mountain. Below, there was the field of flowers but they were surrounding a few tables. There were a few people drinking tea and enjoying the cool weather outside.

The place looked nice and quiet enough, and his room was warm and cozy. He was going to do just fine here.

Gaara turned and he saw Shinobu… No, Terumi-san glancing at him nervously. She was blushing again and when his eyes met hers, she looked down.

It seemed like she wanted to talk to him on their way here but she always stopped herself. He caught her opening her mouth a few times but when he looked at her, she just closed it and blush.

Gaara remembered that she wasn't like this when they first met. He wondered what could have changed. They can't go on like this, barely speaking to each other and she can't even look him in the eyes. She needs to get over her sudden shyness around him or else his travels would be for nothing.

She was the girl who intrigued him the most so he chose to come here first. The Mizukage had started the matchmaking and Gaara did not want to waste the opportunity.

"This is nice, arigato Terumi-san."

"Sugoi. I'm glad you liked it," she smiled. "And please, just call me Shinobu, my lord."

He nodded, "I prefer you do the same."

That flustered her, "Oh... O-of course Gaara-sama."

She gestured at the bell pull, "Just ring if you need anything. There's a shower in your room but there's a hot spring at the back if you're interested. Dinner will be served at seven. You're not allergic to seafood I hope?"

Gaara shook his head. He never thought that watching her stumble through her words could be so amusing but that's how he felt right now. Her face was always red and she was fluttering her hands a bit.

"If that is all, I'll leave you to your rest, Gaara-sama." When Gaara nodded at her, she closed the door only to open it a second later. "Would you like tea and snacks?"

Gaara nodded once more. He forgot to eat again, it was a long journey and he's feeling his hunger now.

"Give me a moment and I shall send someone with food," Her gaze strayed on the fireplace. "And to attend the fire."

Gaara heard her hurry down the stairs, muttering orders as she left.

He didn't have to wait for long, someone knocked and Gaara gave his permission for whoever it was to enter. It was a middle-aged man, carrying a tray of those heavenly mocha buns and tea.

The man smiled at him and he put the tray on the table. He then stoked the fire until it burned merrily. When he finished his tasks, he asked Gaara if there's something else he could do for him. He said he was fine and after thanking him, the man left.

Gaara ate quickly and after that, he relaxed on the futons. They didn't have that in Suna, it would be filled with sand in no time. He tried laying on it and Gaara found that he rather liked the feel of it. Not too hard and not too soft either, definitely more comfortable than a bed. There was a whiff of lemons in the air as Gaara inhaled, and when he looked, he saw a bowl of it on top of the dresser.

The only thing missing in this room was a pot of cactus or two. His mind wandered to Temari and Kankuro, he thought that they would like this place. Temari would love the flowers and Kankuro would no doubt monopolize the hot springs.

The three of them deserve a vacation together. Maybe, he would bring them here someday when everything is settled. Before Temari's wedding would be ideal.

Gaara used this time to rest. It was rare that he could enjoy himself without other people watching. Good thing he managed to convince everyone that he only needed two bodyguards with him. His siblings wanted to come, of course, but he asked them to stay and watch the council instead.

They agreed, although reluctantly. Gaara just brought Shira and his teammate Yumey with him. He trusted him and his judgment. Gaara ordered them to stay outside of the village and like good shinobis, they obeyed without question. Gaara preferred to do this alone.

Terumi Shinobu was pretty, she came from a good family and she's a jonin. She's shy though and they can't seem to have a conversation. She couldn't look at him without that constant blush on her face.

Gaara covered his eyes with an arm. It's too early to know for certain anyway. He just got here after all. He'll relax for now.

Hours passed and night came. At exactly 7:00, Shinobu-san came to get him and they went to dinner. Like everything in this place, the dining room was vintage and oddly, that charmed him.

The chabudai looked magnificent with its artful engravings of nature. A mountain was at its center, trees and flowers surrounding it. The plates and bowls were made with precious porcelains and each had a significant weight. The hashi came from good wood, maybe the same wood used to build this inn. Gaara was certain that they were several generations old.

It was just Shinobu-san and Gaara at dinner. They sat on cushions that have embroidered coverings but were still comfortable. She told him that they were in the private room but they could eat with the others tomorrow if he prefers.

It was just a simple dinner with mostly fish dishes. There's rice, tofu, ebi tempura, sashimi, and kani sushi. But to Gaara's surprise, Shinobu-san presented him his favorite foods as well.

She placed a covered dish in front of him, looking proud of herself. She was drumming her fingers on the table, and she looked like she'll uncover it herself if he didn't move soon. Gaara raised an invisible eyebrow.

"Take a look," she said, anticipation brimming in her eyes.

Whatever it was, it smelled great. So Gaara lifted the cover and was delighted to find salted tongue and gizzards. He flicks an appreciative gaze to the food and the girl in front of him.

"Taste it, Gaara-sama," Shinobu prompted.

Gaara said his thanks and dug in. The texture was just right, the seasonings made the meat savory. After he took the first bite, he just followed it with another and another.

Seeing his enthusiasm, Shinobu clapped in what looked like genuine happiness.

"I'm so glad you liked it! I had been nervous you know."

Gaara felt warmth wrap around his chest. He didn't think she would remember but she did. It was a small gesture but he liked it.

While Gaara was eating, she chattered endlessly about how she practiced making that recipe perfect, that she was nervous but also happy that he liked her cooking and that he didn't have to pretend if he didn't like it. Also, she didn't mind making it again if he wants to and that she would teach Gaara if he wants to learn.

Gaara just let her talk, he took back what he said earlier, Shinobu-san was not shy. Not at all. She just needs a topic that she's interested in and he's discovering that she could go on and on when she found one. Gaara hadn't had this much fun eating dinner in a long time.

The ones with his siblings were different. It was fun too but in a quiet and familiar way. It was a time for privacy, a moment when they can be themselves without judgment.

Eating with Shinobu-san, well, it was new. She's lively, it was unexpected yet comfortable and he couldn't explain it.

For now, it's promising. Tomorrow was when everything will truly start though.
