Short and sweet
Depression reared its ugly head while I perched on the edge of the dining room chair the next morning, adoption paperwork in hand. I silently read, 'Ester and Elmador give Belladonna and Bungo Baggins full custody of adopting Ayla as their daughter.' I rotated the paperwork so the adoption paperwork from my previous adoption parents sat on top. Again I silently read, 'The five Wizards of Middle-Earth here by five the strange little girl with the pearlescent white blood diamond, black hair and purple eyes to Ester and Elmador as their adoption child.' I rotate the paperwork again to find the piece of parchment Belladonna and Bungo signed to confirm with The Shire's Mayor I was officially their daughter. Ester and Elmador had signed their names below with Thrain's signature beside theirs. Above the five signatures I saw my name had been changed to Lyrian.
Tears fell down my face. I was known as Lyrian among the Hobbits, I was known as Ayla among the Dwarves, but among the Wizards of Middle-Earth I was known as the strange girl with the pearlescent white blood diamond, black hair and purple eyes. I was amused since I had brown hair and brown eyes. Which begged the question: how did I end up with brown hair and brown eyes? I wasn't a Dwarf. I wasn't a Hobbit. I obviously wasn't of man because I had turned one and twenty five. So who was I?
'Who am I?' I silently questioned.
"Darling?" The single word fell from the lips of Belladonna, my Hobbit 'Amad, (mother,) who had perched on the edge of the dining room chair opposite of me. Bilbo plopped down in the chair beside me. "Are you alright?"
I shake my head no. "Who am I 'Amad?" I ask as tears fall down my face. My eyes flicked up from the adoption papers I held in my hands.
I told 'Amad about my nightmare I had. She only sat quietly, not uttering a single sound while I told her about my nightmare. Tears fell harder down my face and I had to take a few deep breaths before I could continue, Amad gently stroking my hand with hers and my Hobbit brother came over to wrap me in a hug.
"Bilbo, darling, would you make some breakfast for us?" 'Amad asked.
Giving his head a nod, Bilbo got up and moved to the kitchen and began prepping breakfast.
While my brother began cooking, Amad asked, "what else happened?"
My face paled when the images continued flowing. Tears resumed falling. "'Amad and 'Adad were slain by Orcs like animals at a slaughter along with a lot of my people. Thror was beheaded by a pale Orc, his great grandson Frerin, brother of Thorin and Dis, was slain and so was Zayne, Dis' husband. Thrain went missing after telling Thorin to take the remaining survivors back to The Blue Mountains. Thorin faced The Pale Orc by himself and after cutting off the giant beast's hand, Thorin rallied the surviving Dwarves and pushed the Orcs back. But the number of dead bodies were beyond the count of grief. Balin found 'Amad and 'Adad laying motionless beside Frerin and Zayne. And the last thing I remember Balin telling Thorin is that 'Amad and 'Adad had a daughter by the name of Ayla. 'Amad and 'Adad had been family friends of Balin and Dwalin's father and mother as well as Balin and Dwalin themselves. Then I woke up crying after that.
"I don't know what to do, 'Amad. I feel I have more questions than answers. I don't know who my birth parents are. I don't know where I come from. 'Amad and 'Adad are dead so I can't ask them. I feel so stuck and I don't know which direction to go - or where to even start with my search."
Belladonna patted her daughter's hand. "We are going to eat breakfast, then you are going to get dressed and pack a bag, then you are going to leave for The Blue Mountains and stay there until you get all of the answers you need."
"I can't just drop everything to go search for answers to my questions." I protested.
"Honey." Belladonna took her daughter's hand between both of hers. "I can not bear to see you so upset. You of all people deserve to find out about your family."
"But 'Amad-,"
"No buts! You need answers and the closest source for those answers are living in The Blue Mountains."
Bilbo came over to the table just at that moment with plates of hot food. He set them down on the table between 'Amad and I then he himself sat down once empty plates were set with eating silverware and cups of tea.
