The code proved a dead end. It didn't take Alphys long to confirm there was nothing specific that made it any different then what you would use in any other basic coding, but something must have happened when it was linked to the notebook within the game.
"So is it because I picked the notebook?" you ask, still trying to come up with something to help "It just seemed like the right game item to use to be honest, but it was an item used by one of the human kids whose souls were taken. Could that have had something to do with the connection?" It made sense right? Maybe it was infused with soul power or something.
"nope, just paper. nothing to write home about. i tested it and other items the kid picked up a while ago."
"What does it look like?"
"hu?" Your question clearly caught Sans off guard.
"The notebook. It's just code and a sprite on my end. Actually, um" You wanted to ask if you could see what they look like but shake your head to remove the thought there were more important things than your curiosity. "no, never mind"
There was a slight pause.
"just looks like a tatty book. purple hardback cover, few pages torn out, some water damage. if it weren't for to whole magic words appearing on the page through dimensions it would be literally literature litter."
"So the words just pop up? Are they ink?"
"well more ink-antation. still just paper, but magic changed the colour from white to black. nothings really been added, just altered."
"But I can't do magic, there is no magic in my world, or at least I don't think there is. No monsters either though with all of this happening I can't say I really know what's real and what isn't." Not something you wanted to dwell on right now. "What are we looking for?" You had such a mess to untangle at some point but right now your sanity could only handle so much. Having some set goals to aim for would at least give you something to keep you grounded.
"a way to keep everyone in their own universe. no more resets. can't say I don't want to know how this all happened but I would give my right tibia to just have it all stop. i'm tired to the bone and just want this to be over."
"It's okay Sans" you hear Alphys speak up through the mic. "We can do this…I think." You can't imagine how haggard Sans must look right now if Alphys was spurred on to speak up and give encouragement. You think back to the question you had initially discarded.
"Is there any way to link cameras?" What the hell, why not. At least then Sans could see the concern on your face.
"kid I said I wanted to break the connection, not add to it. can't I rest in peace a little, this is the most work i've done in ages" You could believe that.
"I know, but tell me you are not curious to have a peek at a completely different universe."
"It wouldn't take much to set up…but if you think it's a bad idea…" Alphys voice filtered out in uncertainty. You knew she would jump at the chance. You could admit this was purely self indulgent, but you only knew them from sprites and fan art, you just wanted to see them, if for nothing more than your own curiosity.
Another pause. Talking through mics was certainly easier than using the notebook, and there were less misunderstandings, but you could understand Sans wanting to keep some distance.
"sure, whatever. can't hurt to take a look behind the curtain." You are not ashamed to admit there may have been some silent celebration fist pumping at that, might as well get it out of the why while they couldn't see you…you should probably change quickly while they set up.
Sans and Alphys had basically remote linked their system with yours, using less than basic methods, true, but it did more or less work the same. It was easy enough for you to open your camera and for them to see you through what your PC displayed, now thankfully in fresher clothes and with your hair at least somewhat tidy, but the whole video things was much harder to do it the other way around, at least thats what you could gather from the conversation the two monsters were currently having.
It was really weird sitting at your desk looking at yourself and knowing that was what Sans and Alphys were also seeing. What were you meant to do? Why did it feel like you didn't know where to put your hands all of a sudden.
"relax kid, this was your idea remember"
"I know, I know. Do I… do I look like the humans from your universe?" It was a valid question, who knows how their world actually looked beyond the sprites, if it even went beyond sprites.
"look normal to me, for a human at least." Okay thats a good start for baseline information, not sprites.
"Yyou look…very n..nice."
"Thank you Alphys" Though admittedly you can't remember the little dino doctor not having an instant crush on anyone she meets. Strangely, it's still nice to hear though.
"It's okay if you can't get it working the other way Sans, I know there are more important things to do in the long run really, but I'm just not sure how I can help." Sans and Alphys completely outclass you on all of this. It took you long enough to embed a text file into the game, and that was following a tutorial.
"could answer a few more-"
*BANG*
*BANG*
*BANG*
Well that didn't sound good
"SANS! OPEN THIS DOOR! ALPHYS HAD BETTER BE IN THERE WITH YOU OR SO HELP ME ASGORE!" That really didn't sound good.
"Undine NO! W…wait!" You hear chairs move and a lot more noise, and shouting, was that Papyrus you could as well? It was hard to hear above what you assume was slamming fists on metal.
"well that's put a damper on things. have to check in later, over and trout."
You're smiling, you can't help it, and it has nothing to do with the fish pun. How had you almost forgotten how much you loved these guys, and all the chaos that came with them? Like meeting up with old friends.
Okay it also had a little to do with the fish pun, but that was beside the point.
You didn't know how, but you would help them work this out. Maybe it was time to do some of your own research. You didn't have all of the computer and magic knowledge that Alphys and Sans did, but you did have the internet and years of combined fan knowledge and speculation. Google don't fail me now.
