The Invincible Spider-Man

Chapter 90: Demon Possessed

The gunfire was deafening to Jason Macendale's ears, as he waited behind the overturned police car for a chance to shoot back. However, every second he took a peek, his eyes were blinded by the flash of gunfire.

"Blind aim!" shouted Yuri, and the two of them began to shoot from the top of the car without looking up, hoping that they hit one of the gunmen. But the firing didn't stop.

That's when Yuri heard a familiar "thwip", and she breathed a sigh of relief. Almost instantly, the gunfire stopped.

Jason stood up from cover and gasped. Spider-Man stood right in front of him, but he seemed…different.

"Had time to get a makeover?" asked Yuri, commenting on his new look. Spider-Man turned around, the black and white parts of his suit looking as if they were flowing up and down his body.

"Spider-Man?" asked Macendale.

In an instant, Spider-Man jumped into the air and webbed up their guns, before kicking Jason in the face.

"ARGH!" exclaimed Jason, falling to the ground. Yuri stepped back in shock as Spider-Man turned towards her.

Spider-Man shot another web, but Yuri dodged out of the way and made a break for the police car. Spider-Man jumped high and landed on one of the cars, destroying the roof.

Just then, Jason took out a second gun and shot at Spider-Man's shoulder, which prompted one of the Inner Demons to shoot him in the back.

"AAAAH!" shouted Jason, crumpling to the ground as a pool of blood began to form from his back. Spider-Man shook off the bullet wound on his shoulder and swung towards the Demons' truck, who all piled in and drove away.

"Jason, stay with me," said Yuri, propping him against a car as blood began to pour from his mouth. He strained a wince and clutched his stomach, as the two of them heard ambulance sirens.

"You're going to be fine," reassured Yuri, while paramedics rushed to his aid. Jason felt himself losing consciousness as they lifted him up carefully and placed him on a stretcher and wheeled him into an ambulance.

Yuri squeezed her eyebrows and looked at the site of the gunfight. Spider-Man's webs were still on the ground, though that same black and white energy seemed to be imbued in them.

Harry stumbled to the door to confront the person who was furiously ringing the doorbell. He put on his sunglasses and wiped the sweat off of his forehead, before peering through the peephole and groaning at who he saw.

"You do know I can hear you, right?" asked Mary Jane. Harry sighed, and unlocked the door.

"Where's Peter? Thought both of you were going to take the couch again," replied Harry, coughing a little as he turned away. MJ rolled her eyes at his comment, before noticing his condition.

"Are you okay? You seem…sick," replied MJ, squinting her eyes at his pale, withdrawn face, and the fact that he was wearing sunglasses indoors.

"Y-Yeah, I'm fine," replied Harry, drinking water from a glass.

"You're hungover, aren't you?" asked MJ.

"Mind telling me why you're here?" asked Harry, dodging the question.

"I wanted to talk to you. About this specifically," said MJ, pointing at the empty bottles of alcohol in the living room below them. "I went to get Peter, but he wasn't there,"

"When's he ever there?" scoffed Harry. "So much for a best friend,"

"He's busy with some work by Dr. Connors…probably," replied MJ. Harry sighed and began to walk down the marble stairs, to the lavish living room. MJ hung her coat on a chair and followed Harry.

"So, what's this talk about?" asked Harry.

"You and your…habits," replied MJ, gesturing at the bottles of liquor on the table. Harry shook his head and chuckled.

Just then, the two of them heard a thud coming from Harry's bedroom.

"What was that?" asked MJ, a worried expression crossing her face. Harry sighed and walked to his bedroom, opening the door and whispering something.

"Sorry about that, Lydia," said Harry, as a black-haired woman walked out of the room, wearing a black dress and a purse slung around her shoulder. She eyed Mary Jane closely, before walking up the stairs and out of the house.

"You're kidding," said MJ, dumbfounded.

"Now you know I wasn't the only one drinking all of that," replied Harry, sitting down and burying his face in his hands, beginning to cry.

Mary Jane sat down next to him, holding his hand.

"I went to see my dad," replied Harry, shaking.

"Oh God," replied MJ. She knew that Norman would have tried to manipulate Harry in some way.

"He tried to get in my head, but I didn't let him," continued Harry. "That bastard isn't getting what he wants,"

"What does he want?" asked MJ.

"Me to be like him. Or Peter. God, he's always loved Peter. Ever since I was 14, he's been comparing me to him. "You got a B+ in Calculus? Well, how much did Peter get? You got into the football team? Be more like Peter, who's busy studying." I was so sick of him," said Harry, hate seething in his words.

MJ pat Harry's back. "Whatever that asshole said, he's the one behind bars. Not you," reassured MJ.

"That doesn't change the fact that he was right. I'm never going to be like Peter. He went from a nerd to…well what he is now. I'm all of this," replied Harry, looking around his penthouse. Large, but yet empty.

"You're not Peter Parker. You're Harry Osborn. Don't try and change yourself for a homicidal psychopath who was never even a human being, let alone a father," replied MJ.

Harry twitched, staring at his reflection on the coffee table.

"It's…It's not just that," started Harry, his hand subtly twitching. MJ didn't notice.

"I think what you need, is closure. Not with Norman, but with Peter," said MJ.

"I don't know if I could. I'm sorry for losing control that night, I don't know what happened. Peter doesn't deserve hate, but for some reason, I…I can't control it," said Harry.

"It's the result of years of neglect from Norman. You can't let him have control over you, Harry. Tell you what, I'll get Peter here tomorrow, you both need to have a talk about this. Okay?" asked MJ.

"Okay," said Harry, as MJ hugged him.

"Take care, Har," said MJ. Harry seemed to be hugging her much tighter and much longer, until eventually pulling away. Harry waved goodbye as she put on her coat and left the penthouse.

Nausea began to overtake Harry, and his head began to feel like a boulder. He rushed to the bathroom and emptied the contents of his stomach into the toilet bowl, before feeling even dizzier.

Propping himself up on the sink, he looked into the mirror.

However, what looked back at him was the most grotesque creature he had ever seen. It was his face, but hideously scarred, and with a tinge of green.

Angrily, he headbutted the mirror, causing it to crack from the middle. Harry smashed his head into the mirror again, destroying half of the glass mirror, then stared back into his cracked reflection as a thin river of blood began to flow from his head.

His eyes darted to the open medicine cabinet and fixated on a small, almost empty bottle of pills.

Spider-Man landed back on the ship, where Hammerhead was clapping.

"Looks like Mister Negative was right! Our greatest enemy could become our greatest weapon," said Hammerhead, patting Spider-Man on the back. Peter didn't say a word, and just stared forward at Mister Negative.

"We used him for your work, Hammerhead. Now it's my turn," said Mister Negative, his hands behind his back as he walked up to Spider-Man.

"Yeah, do what you want. I'm gonna have your "Inner Demons" overrun this city till then. The fact that one of those pigs got shot because of Spider-Man shows how no one is safe," replied Hammerhead, signalling to the Inner Demons.

The demons got on a speedboat that was parked at the base of the ship, while Mister Negative showed Spider-Man an image.

"I need you to go after him. Don't kill him, but bring him to me," ordered Mister Negative. Spider-Man didn't reply or even move his head, but Li knew that his voice was heard. Spider-Man was more of an obeying robot at this point.

"You'll find him at a place known as…Horizon Labs," said Mister Negative. "Go!"

Spider-Man slingshotted himself off of the ship, and back towards Manhattan.

Peter opened his eyes, and found himself swinging through New York, as recklessly as possible.

"WOAH!" shouted Peter, trying to slow down. However, he couldn't move his limbs, which continued to swing forwards. It was as if he had no control over his own body.

"Okay, what's going on?" asked Peter to himself, trying not to panic. "Last thing I remember, Li had trapped me in a loop. Then…what?" thought Peter, still trying to gain control over his body.

"He said my mind broke down or something? And I have no control over myself," he continued. His body recklessly ran up a wall, cracking the windows of the building as he sprinted up to the roof and launching into a swing.

That's when Peter realized where he was headed, as the large marble building seemed to get closer and closer.

"Horizon Labs? But why? And how do I break free of this?" he continued asking himself.

Max Modell was working on some paperwork, finally freeing up the clutter that was his desk. Just then, something crashed through the glass windows of his office, and Max instantly ducked under his desk.

Peeking his head out, he breathed a sigh of relief while still feeling confusion. He was relieved that it was just Spider-Man. But he didn't know why he was here.

"Spider-Man? What are you doing here?" asked Max.

"MAX, MOVE!" shouted Peter, realizing why his body had been piloted here. However, it was as if Max couldn't hear Peter, and instead stared at the husk of a superhero that stood in front of him.

Sensing something was wrong, Max instinctively made a dash for the door. All of a sudden, a blast of negative energy shot out from Spider-Man's arm, destroying the door and dropping Max to the ground.

A hint of familiarity etched itself across Max's face, as he realized how dire the situation was.

"Oh no…" he said, panic setting in as Spider-Man approached ahead menacingly, his lenses seemed to have been contorted into a scowl. Before Max could get behind his desk, Spider-Man swatted it away like it was a fly, sending the desk flying out of the window.

"Mr Modell, run!" shouted Peter, as Spider-Man backhanded him, sending him flying across the room.

"Martin, is that you?" asked Max, trembling as he began to crawl away. Spider-Man lifted him up and slammed him to the wall, lifting him by the neck.

"NO, PLEASE!" pleaded Peter, trying his best to move his limbs. He still felt paralyzed, as if his mind was free to think but his body belonged to someone else.

Spider-Man threw Max back to the ground, who was wheezing for breath. Before he could attack again, however, Anya bust through the door, holding what seemed like a sonic gun.

"Cover your ears!" she yelled. Max shielded his ears as she pulled the trigger. A blast of sound erupted from the gun and attacked Spider-Man, knocking him off of his feet.

"Come on, I need to get back control!" shouted Peter, getting angrier and angrier. Spider-Man seemed to get up even faster, as he shot a web at the gun and yanked it toward the wall, shattering it.

Max picked up a piece of debris and threw it at Spider-Man's head, before grabbing Anya by her hand and running down the corridor.

"HELP! COME ON!" shouted Peter, struggling to get some semblance of movement. However, the more he seemed to try and resist the control, the stronger and faster Spider-Man seemed to get.

Spider-Man chased them into the lobby, before jumping over Max and Anya and blocking their exit.

"This must be how Li got control of me in the first place. Because I kept trying to fight the non-existent Sinister Sixty-Six, he was able to attack my mind. What if…that's what's happening right now?" thought Peter.

Spider-Man lunged at the duo, who jumped away at the last millisecond. Peter stopped trying to resist the control, and instead focused on his breathing. He closed his eyes and tried to calm his heart rate.

Spider-Man seemed to slow down, no longer moving at an inhuman speed. Max picked up a computer monitor from the reception's desk and smashed it across Spider-Man's face.

"OW! Hey wait, I could feel it," remarked Peter, suddenly realizing he could feel his skin again. Instinctively, he tried raising his right arm. In doing so, his right arm shot straight up, before instantly going down again.

"I'm regaining control. Li's powers feed off of aggression, so I just need to lose mine," thought Peter, as Anya picked up a heavy textbook and threw it on his back. Other scientists began to hurl various objects at Spider-Man, till he staggered out of the building.

"That's it….just a little more!" urged Peter, realizing he was finally regaining control. A sense of relief washed over him once he was able to raise both hands in the air.

"I'M BACK!" shouted Spider-Man. Just then, a scientist pulled out a gun.

"NO WAIT, WAIT!" protested Peter, but the scientist fired the gun.

"DAMMIT!" shouted Mister Negative, stomping his foot on the ground and holding his head.

"What happened?" asked Hammerhead, eyeing Li suspiciously.

"I've lost control of Spider-Man. He broke free. He figured out how to break free," replied Li. "My corrupting touch only works once on a person. We lost our weapon," grunted Mister Negative.

"You fail to see the big picture, my friend!" chuckled Hammerhead. "Guess what happened because of the spider?"

"What?" asked Mister Negative, through gritted teeth.

"A pig got shot because of him. You think they'll ever trust him again?" asked Hammerhead. Li clenched his fist, before taking a breath.

"Modell got away. He's the one I want," replied Li, signaling to the Demons on the ship.

"And what about what I want, huh? I say we do my thing and just shoot down every single cop we come across," replied Hammerhead, cracking his knuckles.

"I'm guessing you don't have a brain in that adamantium skull, do you? We'd be better off going after the fine civilians of New York City, corrupting them and having them tear each other apart," replied Li.

Mister Negative signaled his Demons on the ship to come toward him

"Hammerhead, you take half my men and storm every single street in Manhattan. And corrupt as many civilians as possible," he continued.

"What do you take me for, huh? We did your idea of using Spider-Freak to go after that scientist guy, and he got away. Now we do it my way," replied Hammerhead.

Li grabbed Hammerhead's arm, before he could make another move.

"You better think about what you're trying to do, Li," said Hammerhead.

"I have," replied Mister Negative. But before he could do anything, Hammerhead elbowed him in the chest and sent him staggering backward. Li shot out a blast of negative energy toward Hammerhead.

However, Hammerhead aimed his head forward and was able to block the attack, before rushing towards him and slamming his head into Li's ribs.

Mister Negative flew towards the hull, falling to his knees. However, he placed his hands on the ground and unleashed a shockwave of negative energy, knocking Hammerhead off of his feet.

Mister Negative materialized an energy sword and attacked Hammerhead, who managed to roll away at the last minute. Li ducked under one of Hammerhead's punches and uppercutted him.

Before Li could unleash another hit with his sword, Hammerhead grabbed it with his palms and destroyed it in two, then grabbed Li by the throat, lifting him up and slamming his back on the side of the ship.

Mister Negative tried to break free, but Hammerhead lifted him over his head, ready to throw him off of the ship. That's when Li yelled out a command, and before Hammerhead knew it, the Inner Demons swarmed around him.

Hammerhead dropped him as he began to break the necks of all the goons around him. While he was distracted, Li picked up a piece of the sword and stabbed it into Hammerhead's heel.

"AARGHH!" shouted Hammerhead. As soon as he turned around, Li grabbed his neck, as negative energy began to flow from his arm to Hammerhead. His eyes went black, and he stood up straight.

"Take all the Demons and use your corrupting touch to corrupt as many civilians as possible," panted Mister Negative. Hammerhead wordlessly nodded, as he walked up to the deck below to access the speedboats.

"You all, wait here," said Li, gesturing to a group of Demons.

"We're going after Max Modell," finished Mister Negative.

"So, that's the full story. Martin Li manipulated me to attack you," said Spider-Man, sitting across Max in the lobby of the building, rubbing an ice pack on his shoulder. Max nodded as he stroked his beard.

"This is my fault," replied Max.

"How so?" asked Spider-Man.

"Horizon Labs…and mostly I, am responsible for his condition," said Max. "30 years ago, Ken and Helen Li came to Horizon Labs, asking for treatment for Martin's condition," he continued.

"What was his condition?" asked Peter, putting the ice down.

"From what we could tell, he suffered from dissociative identity disorder. But his parents thought he was possessed by some inner demon of his. We were working on an experimental treatment to treat DID, but we hadn't tested it on humans at that time," explained Max.

"And his parents agreed to it?" asked Peter.

"They forced us to do it. No matter how much we told them that the procedure was untested, they wouldn't budge. Then the money got involved, a very hefty sum of money and my higher-ups decided that using the procedure on the little child was worth the money his parents were offering," replied Max, sobbing as he took off his glasses.

"What happened then?" asked Spider-Man.

"A loud scream, a sound that no child should ever make. And then… he seemed cured," replied Max.

"Seemed?" asked Spider-Man.

"2 weeks later, his parents were killed in a car crash. A crash caused by unknown factors. Martin was the only survivor, and he was unscathed," detailed Max.

"Oh man. So Martin killed his parents?" suggested Spider-Man.

"No, not Martin. But his alternate personality, Mister Negative," said Max.

Just then, a police car pulled up to the laboratory, as an enraged Yuri Watanabe stormed out of the car, her gun in her hand.

"Yuri! Are you okay?" asked Spider-Man, wincing as he stood up and walked toward her.

"Put your hands up right now!" shouted Yuri, aiming her gun at Spider-Man.

"Woah! Yuri, it's me," replied Spider-Man. Yuri cocked her gun, aiming directly at Spider-Man's head.

"Captain, it wasn't him! He wasn't in control of his own body!" protested Anya.

"I don't care." Replied Yuri, through gritted teeth.
