CHAPTER SIX

The last few days before returning to school had passed in a blur and Karma found herself back there, surrounded by the same old faces, doing the same old things. At least she got one of the biggest bits of awkwardness out of the way first when she ran into Felix. "Hi,"she greeted him, figuring it would be impolite to do anything else. "How are you?"

"Fine,"he answered. "Sober."

"Good. It's just I haven't seen you since…"

"Since you tore out my heart and stomped on it?"he asked lightly.

"Yeah,"Karma agreed awkwardly. "Since then."

"It's okay,"Felix told her. "I appreciate you were honest and I hope we can still be friends."

Karma relaxed. "I'd like that. Maybe we could meet up at lunch?"

"I'll save you a table."

As Karma carried on, she was greeted by the sight of Liam and Lauren kissing by a locker. She stared at them, dumbfounded. Shane came up next to her. "Yeah, I'm still getting used to seeing that too."

"When did that happen?"Karma demanded. "How did I miss it? Are they still faking?" She stared for a few seconds. "It doesn't look like faking."

"No, no faking. Well, at least they seem happy, in a weird, mismatched kind of way. Which brings us to the big unexpected hook-up of the holidays." He spoke in a sing-song voice. "You and A-my!"

Karma sighed. "She told you. Of course she did."

"So, I have to ask. Why? You were meant to be Miss 100% Heterosexual…"

"…who, nevertheless, kept kissing Amy,"Karma pointed out.

"Which I did think was a bit of a clue at one point, but you were so adamant, you even had my gaydar convinced. So what happened?"

Karma sighed. "I guess I just needed to be a bit braver or a bit more honest."

"Then you really, truly want to be with Amy?"

"I do." Karma eyed him suspiciously. "Have you got some big plan?"

"I might have a bit of an idea, yes,"Shane confirmed. "End of first week school dance. I have spoken to Principal Penelope and she has agreed to you, me and Noah performing. Sounds the perfect way to get you and Amy in the same room in a non-stuffy setting, right?"

"Right,"Karma agreed. "Then what?"

"Then…we improvise."

At least some part of Shane's plan seemed to have worked, surprising as that was .Karma was up on stage with him and Noah, they were performing and the hall was heaving.

Liam was dancing with Lauren and Karma was still getting used to seeing that. Felix was chatting to Lauren's friend Leila: She wasn't sure how that had happened but it was good to see him happy. Even Reagan was there. And, of course, Amy. With Sabrina.

Karma was coasting along on autopilot so much, her thoughts elsewhere, that she barely registered that the song had ended. Shane spoke into a microphone. "That's it for now but we have a regular gig at the weekend if anyone wants to come along! See you soon!"

The group shuffled off the stage and a DJ began playing music. Reagan greeted Karma with a kiss and pulled her into a dance. "You were really good up there."

Karma nodded but her mind was elsewhere. "Reagan, I think…"

She was spared completing the thought by Reagan. "You want to break up."

"I'm sorry,"Karma said quietly.

"It's okay, I always understood what this was. I know it's Amy you want."

"You've been great company,"Karma promised her. "And you've helped me realise I am comfortable dating a girl but…yeah. This isn't what I want anymore."

"I think you got her attention as much as you could." Reagan gave her a quick hug. "I'll see you around."

Karma looked around for Amy but her friend seemed to be doing the best to ignore her. She looked away sadly.

Shane saw Amy standing alone and approached her. "Bravery,"he remarked. "I don't think I've ever really understood it."

Amy looked at him bemused. "Thanks for sharing that."

"Noah's got it, to stand up to his family the way he did. And you've got it, putting yourself out there with Karma the way you did, even though it meant getting your heart broken. But I don't think you've ever quite realised that Karma's got it too.S he's doing the same thing."

"Karma's…" Amy trailed off, all the excuses she'd been spouting suddenly seemed hollow.

"Karma needs you to be brave again,"Shane answered. "Sure you might get your heart broken again but wouldn't it be great if you didn't?"

Unable to process a coherent answer, Amy found herself wandering back to Sabrina, whose face lit up. "Hey, do you want to head on somewhere?"

Amy took a deep breath. "I think we need to break up."

Sabrina's face fell. "What?"

"We're such good friends that when we got together, I thought that was it, what I wanted, a friend that wanted to date me. But it's not as simple as that. I think…I think we're better as friends. I hope we can still be that."

Sabrina looked upset but nodded. "I guess if that's what you want, I'll try."

"Thank you." Amy held out a hand and Sabrina shook it awkwardly. Amy looked around for Karma but couldn't see her. Shane pointed towards the door and Amy hurried out.

Sabrina stood there for a moment, then realised Reagan was standing next to her. "No point trying to get between those two,"Reagan noted. "I've tried."

Amy came racing out into the car park and saw a solitary figure walking away, a figure she'd have instantly recognised anywhere. "Karma, wait!"

Karma stopped and turned round, seeing Amy racing up to her. "Amy, I get it, okay? I had my chance with you a year ago and I blew it. But can you at least believe me when I tell you what I want?"

"I do believe you,"Amy told her. "I do believe you. I've broken up with Sabrina."

It was clear that wasn't what Karma was expecting to hear. "What?"

"I've broken up with Sabrina."

A small smile started to spread across Karma's face as she realised what was coming. "I've broken up with Reagan."

"I'm done pretending this isn't what I want. I love you. You and only you."

"And I love only you,"Karma confirmed. She leaned forward and kissed her.

Amy responded to the kiss for a moment, then pulled back, looking her in the eyes. "I don't know if this'll be a disaster or not, but I'll regret it for the rest of my life if I don't find out. I want to be with you and all I need is to be brave."

They kissed again, much longer this time, and as they kissed, it felt like there was just the two of them in the whole world.
