Several days later, and Scott was in New York for some Tracy Industries meetings.
It had been a long day, and he was tired. Not too tired to slip his bodyguard and hunt down some decent coffee. Scott felt a little guilty at that, but sometimes he just needed to pretend he was a normal person that could walk down the street unnoticed.
Today was not going to be that day.
He could feel a difference in the air, and he paused. In that moment a man dressed like Kayo had been originally stood before him. His hand was on his sword hilt, and the vibes the man was giving off did not feel good. Definitely not friendly.
'Who are you?'
'So, you can see me, eh?'
'What the hell do you want?'
'I sensed a high spiritual pressure here, and it turned out to be you.'
They stared at each other in the growing dark.
'Tanusha. Do you know her? A young female Reaper who visited you.'
'A Reaper? Sorry, can't say that I do.'
'Don't play dumb with me! She was hunting a hollow known as Grand Fisher. She must have been drawn to your unusual powers.'
As he spoke the man – obviously another Soul Reaper by the conversation as well as the clothes – walked towards Scott, but Scott stayed still. He wasn't intimidated, although he was sure that was what the man wanted.
'Grand Fisher?'
'Yeah.'
The man stopped right in front of Scott, but just out of reach. His face was deadly serious, and Scott straightened.
'Where is Tanusha?'
'Don't ask me, I don't know.'
'If I was you I'd stop lying.'
He stood taller, removing his hand from the sword. Scott mentally prepared for whatever might come next. Whatever happened, he knew that he needed to protect Kayo from whoever this person was.
There was a beat of silence before the Reaper reacted. Grasping his Zanpakuto he swiped at Scott's head.
But Scott was ready, leaning back just enough for the blade to pass over him. He could feel its passage. It didn't faze the man at all that he'd missed, and Scott found the blade at his throat.
As the Reaper stepped forward Scott stepped back, once, twice, three times. But Scott knew when to stand his ground, and he didn't want this man to know that he had Kayo's powers, something told him that would be very bad for the Reaper. So he did something he had not done in years.
He turned and ran.
Scott didn't see the blue light, shaped into an arrow, that stopped the Soul Reaper from chasing him, but because there were no sounds of pursuit he turned around. The Reaper was behind a pillar, looking the way he'd come from.
He watched as the Reaper stood straight, stepping out slightly from the protection of the pillar. The bolt of blue barely missed the man, and Scott only just caught the muttered curse.
'Well, well. A Quincy.'
Scott had no idea what the Reaper was on about, but he watched as he took off into the night. Someone had chased the man off and Scott wanted to know who…at least, he thought he should know.
There was no one there.
